I already have N Draft network setup for my media server but it seems like my GS never pick it up. When I search for Wifi it only come up with the normal G Draft. How so?
It may be a difference in draft-n and true finalized n. Besides, battery life is better on g, and unless you will be transfering HD movies to your phone I don't see the problem. Your internet doesn't break G spec speeds.

I dont mind the G speed for browsing cuz I know it will never break that speed anyway but what I was trying to achieve is..
If there is an app that let me stream HD media file, wirelessly, from PC to phone, << that would need N draft for sure cuz G will not be able to handle it. And because of this reason, im just a bit worried that my GS doesnt pick it up
Note: ie; in iPhone they have an app called "Air Video" which let user streaming media file from PC to iPhone wirelessly
Try turning off all other specs like b and g in your router and leave n on. The phone just might prefer g over n for battery life (the hd2 had n disabled for this reason)
Heard today that Android 2.1 doesn't have drivers for or doesn't support N(I forget which), so you have to wait for 2.2 if that has em.
Regards
Edit-------------------------
2.2 supports N, 2.1 doesn't. Just did a quick search on google
That doesn't mean the Galaxy S can't use N. It only means that Android 2.1 can't use N by default. Samsung might have solved this issue on its own.
Ahhh thanks guy!! Phew..
My network says my Galaxy S has connected at wireless n 65 Mbps if thats any help, DLink DIR 655 router

Hi guys,
is possible that the shift wifi is power-less than others notebooks?
i explain, i've a 20mb connection at home and a wi-fi zyxel router, i connect to it my shift and also my asus g1s. when i download something from internet my asus download approximately from 1,5mb to 1,8 per second. and is a good thing. If i download the same thing from shift it don't go beyond 800kb. i've never seen a download like on asus.
This have sense? don't know why.. is not a big problem, but is courios.
have same here,
At home my con.speed is 1Mbit. Slow!
At work is normal 54...
I guess it's wireless router that is the problem. (Mine USR, has more problems...)
I get this too.
I can get 17m/bit on my PC which uses a wireless card, 8-10m/bit on my daughters HP laptop and 4-5m/bit on the Shift.
You have to remeber the specification of the device can also have a bearing on the results. My Core2duo 3.6ghz, with 2gb of highly overclocked RAM, RAID0 Raptors and IP35 Motherboard, will ultimately process download speed faster than the Shift would. Plug a P2 450mhz based machine with a 8gb hard drive and 128mb RAM into a wireless network, believe me, you won't get tremendously fast downloads!!!
Performance issue here too :
Using a Netgear WNR854T and I can see the Wi-Fi connection switching constantly from 54 Mbits/s to 11 Mbits/s. Getting really low data rates...
Yep, on the Shift I'm on about half to a third of what I get on my Presario (true d/l speed vs connection speed). In fact depending on 3G performance I can get better d/l speeds that way...
I find in general wireless strength to be sub par on the Shift. My HX4700 PPC has better range and speed than the Shift. Because I use the shift to mainly just surf pages it isn't an issue...but d/l'ing large files in emails is a pain.
While we're discussing wireless on the Shift, is getting it to work under SnapVue a priority in the project? I see that and the SD card as the 2 key issues (for me anyhow)...another donation coming to help with these elements and as thanks for work to date.
my wifi works fine, seems to work better than on some other devices i have

wifi isn't a priority because the driver doesn't even exist for WM6. will have to recompile CE5 one if that one is working at all.
so that'll be a big pita
also, wifi will only work if SD works.

Thanks- SD card working would be a big bonus indeed...I got about 7 meg left on Snap Vue...and with no calendar sync'd...
I guess the only reason why I mentioned WiFi (apart from my naivety about drivers etc) was the duopoly we exist in here in NEw Zealand means 3g/HSDPA data costs are horrific. Try $40 for 200meg (yes, meg) a month! Vodafone have been known to say that New Zealand is their most profitable country on the planet (read "most ripped off"). And if fact the news today talked about our commerce commision bashing them around for lying about their cheap rates to an audit group...it p!sses me off to no end, but what am I gonna do?
Anyway's look forward to further Shift developments.
I have to review my initial comments. Last night I had very fast speeds in spite of the less than stellar reception showing for the strength...so I suspect the wireless strength shows as being less but actual impact on speed might be minimal....
considering that :
-most if not all wifi network are in mixed mode b/g
-802.11G uses more power that causes windows phones batteries to die even faster
-on a mobile device there really isnt demand for crazy speeds above even 1 or 2 Mbits
-its disabled by default
why are so many people go though the hastle of enabling it? am i missing something? other than combatibility reasons, im not sure why HTC et al even include it in their devices
If you jump on a G network with a B device the extra speed for all the other devices goes away and the whole network throttles down to B speeds.
While I admit that getting the G speed out of a phone is moot, I will hack my device so that when I get it on my home network it does not nerf all my other devices connected wirelessly.
BTW my phone requires a hack to use G, yours may not.
Some people (myself included) turn 802.11b off (stability concerns with my AP's firmware)
there is also a range difference between b and g different frequencies. G is better than b. And N isn't supported on any phone I know about so G is defacto standard.
My ADSL connection can do 13Mb download & 1Mb upload, all computers achieve (also on wireless) this using either speedtest.bbmax.co.uk or speedtest.net. However my HD2 can only achieve 3.5-4Mb max using the same sites, upload is represented correctly. It seems to fly up very quickly then back down, for upload it takes a few seconds to check the speed for both sites. I used Opera 10 (Flash Lite 3).
Also on HSDPA it can only do ~0.5Mb but when tested in dongle it achieves ~2.5Mb, upload is represented correctly (1Mb) for both Vodafone and O2.
I've also tried the wireless N hack but this hasn't improved things.

There is no solution. HD2 performance on WI-FI are just bad. People don't care. The only justification they can give to this is "it's just a phone". Amen.

That sucks, my mates Omnia is also pretty bad on WiFi so I assume this is a WinMo problem?
Also I meant just O2 for 0.5/2.5 HSDPA thing, just checked Vodafone and got 3.5Mb / 1Mb.
Also doesn't the "it's just a phone" thing kinda wear off when you cross the £500 mark?

I don't know. Maybe it's WinMo but I don't have other Windows Phones to make comparisons.

I agree but these are the people that appear here when you criticize their toy.
Maybe enabling wifi-n will speed it up. I'd at least give that a try.
Also, I did a test, and I get exactly what I get on my laptop which is 5644kbps
I have been having issues with HSDPA on my HD2 for some time. I am with T-mobile UK... what I have found is that when I hard boot/reflash a new rom... HSDPA is full speed. However something triggers what I can only think is a GPRS only mode, at first I thought I had installed apps that affected networking but I don't believe that is the case now.
Yesterday for example I was in a shielded building and had no reception whatsoever... when I came out I could not connect to T-Mobile data so restarted my HD2 a few times then setup data again.... I am connected now but internet connectivity is really slow, I generally stream music but I can't do this and I may as well forget about YouTube.
I have spoken to T-Mobile about this in the past and they said there are no restrictions on my account. I also know (havng proved it before) that by going through the hassle of a hard reset/new rom flash HSDPA with work again.
I wonder if this is IP related but I am not sure how to check the configuration on Winmo. I also am unsure how/where to do a speedtest (Speedtest.net needs an updated version of flash).
Managed to get it sorted out.... sent the Tmobile settings from the Tmobile website to my phone. Then in my ROM (OMEGA) there is a enable 3G mode.... This seems a bit flaky to be honest... Anyway I selected the new Tmobile internet settings option in Connections, then flicked the 3G setting in connection manager on and off a few times...
In the status bar, rather than "G" and a small "G" with reception meter both show as "H" (this will differ to the rom you have probably).... main thing is streaming is back again

I've generally found 3G to be faster than WiFi and even the ping in some situations on WM phones.
my phone also gets around 2 to 3Mbps on the speed test with the wifi.. 700 or so with hspda and 500 or so with 3g.
isnt this the max rate of the memory card? perhaps the phone itself is slowing down the results?

3G speed depends heavily on the mast tech level and how many people are using it.
ok i know there r two different wifi apps for the hd2. there is the common one that has only tmobile data connectivity. but i used to have the one that u could connect to tmobile internet, data, or mms. does anyone have the .cab file for this wifi app for hd2? i need to use the tmobile internet setting to get on xbox live because the data one wont let me use it on xbox live.
oh god i hope no one actually posts the cab. doesn't the xbox live community already have enough issues .... i don't want my modern warfare matches bogged down by your slow tmobile internet
Here's the two HD2-compatible wifi-sharing cabs that I've come across so far. I haven't tested either yet, and I don't know which one you've tried already, but here they are if you want to give them a shot.
Now, what (I think) vampsandbats was trying to express is the fact that even a decent 3G connection isn't a very good method for trying to play games, not just due to the irregular speeds often experienced, but the latency as well...it's not within the range I'd want to use for online gaming. Also, does the 360 have the ability to connect to ad-hoc networks? As far as I know, that's the only type of wifi connection our hardware can produce as a "router", and that's been the only option with wifi-sharing apps on other HTC hardware I own (TP2)
Hey guys, ive been tethering for awhile now, and had no problems, just really noticed this after my second month of service.
But, when tethering, HTML web browsing is pretty slow, and my Network Meter widget on my computer says im loading webpages at only 25 -30 KB/s but when i download a torrent/file or anything else (even streaming youtube) my dl speeds go up to 130-208 kB/s. So i thought it was IE9 but then when connected to an actual wifi access point, i experience so issues. Also, i downloaded Google Chrome and the same thing happens. Secondly, when im skyping or oovooing, it will randomly disconnect and hang me up, but yet the icon on my phone says that im still connected to data and everything is fine.
Question is this: Do you think the issue resides in my laptop, phone, WiFi tether app, or T-Mobile network?
I must add both the speedtest app and website (ran from computer) yeild the same speeds. Im completly stumped as to why its like this, im putting my money on the tethering app, but at times when i get kicked off skype and it says i have no internet connection, i try loading a webpage on my phone and it takes a bit longer. (Its really hard to say) but i really need ideas as to where i can start diagnosing and eliminating things.
AS USUAL THANKS GUYS
Are you on Magldr? If so, can you test it with cLK? I'm tethering wired and wireless with cLK and it had been pretty fast- the only time I see a lag in losing any page is if the site is a known, slow one (like the Indian Railways reservations site!)...

Im on CLk, i dont like MAGLDR because i have the red key digitizer error. Where the touch screen becomes unresponsive when you use the end key. I might tear it apart and try to fix it someday. But a thought just came across, could T-Mobile somehow know im tethering and throttle me then?
Ah! You didn't mention TMo (am on XDA app, can't see it even of you have added it to your profile!)
It's very much a possibility- other TMo users, can you check this one out?
And how do you tether- wifi or wired? Built-in or an app? I use built-in for wireless and the wired tether app. The app shows the speeds in realtime, try it if you already haven't...

Haha sorry man! Wasnt sure if it mattered. But i have a feeling its my phone, as something strange happened just a few minutes ago, i was tethering, and i lost connection, so i enabled Airplane mode, then disabled it, and it said 3 bars of service no matter where i was.. it was like the radio got stuck/froze or something. Im gonna flash another radio just to check it out. Also, i use the WiFi tether for root users app which actualy uses built in wifi tethering. But i cant really see the speeds as my phone only gets 3g on my window sill xD and i use VNC viewer to control my phone from my computer. And the tether app uses the wifi port to monitor speeds, so it goes way high when im controlling my phone with VNC from my computer so its hard to say. Im more convinced its the phone :/ but just dont know what.
I think ive narrowed it down, after changing ROM, RADIO, kernel, location, only one thing made a difference, and that was location. I think the connection is unstable because there are no bars showing, just shows the H and that its connected, so i think its just that my signal is horrible, wont know till i get my SGS2, if i get it. :/ my HD2 sucks with signal, can a bad SIM cause this?

Are you sure your place has a good signal, and its just the HD2 that is not picking up? Try with another phone. I used to have black-spots in my home a long while back, and used some app for Symbian for my E72 to check the signal strength at various places within the house as well as the cellular towers that is available for me - maybe something like that is available for Android (should be available for sure, is Symbian has it Android will have a million alternative!).

Well i tried with my Sprint Touch Pro 2, and it got really good edge signal (doesnt support 3g on tmo) but when id put my hands around it it would loose service, but in general, it was much better then the HD2. and actually, we went to see a circus, and inside the stadium, HD2 had no service, but Touch Pro 2 had full bars... so im guessing its the HD2. :/
