I just did an experiment to see how fast my internet is by 4 different ways.
(Sighing...) It seems that the internet speed is terribly slow even by wifi.
My phone:
T-mobile G1 with Froyo (check my signature for details).
My laptop:
HP MINI.
How did I do:
I connected my laptop by
1) Wifi (Verizon)
2) Froyo's USB Tethering
3) App: PdaNet
4) App: aNetShare
to compare their internet speeds.
Location:
Manhattan, New York.
Time:
around 4:00 PM
Friday, June 25, 2010
Results (all speeds read from SPEEDTEST.NET):
1) Wifi (Verizon):
DOWNLOAD: 2.96 MB/s
UPLOAD: 0.73 MB/s
2) Froyo's USB Tethering:
DOWNLOAD: 1.37 MB/s
UPLOAD: 0.19 MB/s
3) App: PdaNet:
DOWNLOAD: 1.80 MB/s
UPLOAD: 0.28 MB/s
4) App: aNetShare:
DOWNLOAD: 1.17 MB/s
UPLOAD: 0.25 MB/s
so slow~~~
buy better internet

Ok, so it looks like I was bored, and so far I haven't seen anybody else try this so why not, right?
As the owner of a Sierra Wireless AirCard 860 (UMTS/HSDPA) and an HTC TyTN (UMTS/HSDPA), I figured I could be the first to compare different types of PC data connections.
Anecdotally, it seemed like the TyTN USB-tethered connection was roughly the same speed as the direct PC-Card connection, and the TyTN tethered over Bluetooth definitely seemed slower, but it was time to confirm.
For all tests, I used Cingular's ISP.CINGULAR APN, and I logged in as [email protected]. There was no proxy server used at all. Also, I disabled all apps on my PC that might try and hijack the data connection and disconnected WiFi and wired ethernet connections before getting started.
For my benchmark, I ran the 600k test from DSLReports.com
Finally, all tests were run within a 45-minute period at my home office desk in the Boston area (I had a good 3G connection for all tests).
So the results:
Siera Aircard 860
11:25pm 634 kbs
11:26pm 559 kbs
11:27pm 651 kbs
11:28pm 737 kbs
11:29pm 646 kbs
-----------------
Avg: 645 kbs
HTC TyTN (USB Tether)
11:41pm 585 kbs
11:42pm 737 kbs
11:43pm 748 kbs
11:44pm 648 kbs
11:45pm 520 kbs
-----------------
Avg: 648 kbs
HTC TyTN (Bluetooth 1.2 Tether)
12:06am 307 kbs
12:08am 296 kbs
12:09am 312 kbs
12:10am 275 kbs
12:11am 308 kbs
-----------------
Avg: 300 kbs
So what did I learn from all this? Statistically, there was no difference in speed between the PC-Card and the Tethered USB connections. Also, as expected, the Bluetooth connection was significantly slower.
Other conclusion: I really can't justify keeping the PC-Card 3G plan anymore! I'll be giving up simultaneous Internet-on-PC and phone connectivity, but at a $59.99/mo savings? I think it's worth it!
What about using a Bluetooth 2.0 adapter on the PC?
I didn't have a BT 2.0 card to test with, but I doubt it will make any difference -- the TyTN doesn't support EDR...
I should also note that I've seen significantly higher speeds than reported in the test, but this is pretty indicative of how the different configurations behave.
I've cancelled my data card plan effective 9/25. If somebody wants to lend me a card between now and then, I'm happy to try it...
I really want to use mns tethering, but am having no luck on the 2.1 Roms tried so far with error 67s (RegawMOD, darchVanillia, damage 2r3, some earlier damage to I think).
The last time I had it was on a waffle 2.0 if I am recalling correctly.
I'm Flashing Legend again now that I have the appropriate HTC Sync to see if that works.
I think DarchLegend Has it working,
And i think Beezy does too.
Yup, just flashed darchlegend and am posting via mns.
Lets see how the battery does on USB charging.
Speed Compare:
Hero:
Download Speed: 349 kbps (43.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 204 kbps (25.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Comcast:
Download Speed: 1817 kbps (227.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 573 kbps (71.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Problem is the Comcast connection drops out every 5-10 page loads. Its really annoying so I was hoping to use MNS to replace it.
Tested the MNS speeds again today for grins on Legend 4.3...
Last Result:
Download Speed: 1235 kbps (154.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 432 kbps (54 KB/sec transfer rate)
Hey!
Has anyone else had problems with their wifi connection?
My D802 rarely goes over 1,5 MB/s on SMB and rarely over 2,5 MB/s on FTP.
(ES file explorer, tried both 2.4 / 5 GHz, tried three routers atheros/broadcom AC + Linksys G latest firmwares)
Same wifi setup results in transfer speeds of 15-25 MB/s on two laptops with the current Netgear R7000 ac-router I'm on now.
Link speed in the G2 is shown as 433 Mbps. Running latest CM11 nightly 0224 rom but tried the original LG 4.2.2 with same result.
Is there a modem update or better app that can improve the transfer speeds? How about the official 4.4.2 update, does it come with any speed improvements?
I appreciate any suggestions you may have. /s
Just wanted to inform any reader that the problem was with the smb samba file explorer app. Nowadays ES gives around 5MB/s but the real speed champion is ...... Drumroll..... X-plore!
Winner by a landslide. Newcomer app that offers stable samba file transfers at over 9 MB/s. What a geek rush!

My Galaxy S4 have the newest firmware from Samsung I9505XXUGNF1 (Kitkat 4.4.2). My router is a Asus RT-AC66U to which the S4 connects with max speed of 433 Mbps. My internet connection is 120 Mbps.
When I do a speedtest on the S4 I get results of ~110 Mbps, but when I'm downloading a file over LAN from the disk connected directly to the router I get download speed only of ~20Mbps (2.4 MB/s) which is very sucky!
My Laptop have only a N network card, and connects to the router with max 300 Mbps and when I download the same file I get over 7.5 MB/s!! (~65 Mbps).
Speedtest also shows results of over 110 Mbps...
I remember when the phone was new, and it had Android 4.3 (~10 months ago), I had LAN download speeds of over 9-10 MB/s...
I tried with different file managers like X-Plore and others, but it looks like it is not the app problem.
does somebody know what could be the problem?
Same problem on Galaxy Tab S (SM-T805)
The same is happening to my Brand new Galaxy Tab S.
It is connecting to the WiFi with 866Mbps, and files inside the network are download only at ~3 MB/s
does anybody have the same issue?
The problem is now solved by installing newest version of X-Plore v 3.66 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lonelycatgames.Xplore
LAN download speeds went from ~2.5 MB/S to ~14 MB/s (I think that the limit is now the Hard Drive plugged to a USB 2.0 port on the router)
Thank you Lonely Cat Games for solving this issue!!
I experience poor Wifi download performance on my X Compact. I am doing speedtests (with speedtest.net, on regional servers), and all other devices within my Wifi network show way better download performance. Here is my environment:
Internet connection: 30 MB/s down, 3 MB/s up (Fibre cable)
Network Switch: Routerboard RB-2011UAS
Wifi AP: TP-Link TL-WA901ND V4.0 450MBit/s Accesspoint
speedtest.net download results (within the same wifi network, all done with excellent wifi signal stength):
Intel NUCi3 PC: 30 MB/s down, 3 MB/s up
Samsung Tab SM-T520: 30 MB/s down, 3 MB/s up
Sony Xperia X: 20 - 25 MB/s down, 3 MB/s up
Sony Xperia X Compact: 5 - max. 15 MB/s down, 3 MB/s up
(latest software updates installed)
What I've tried so far:
switch 802.11 modes b/g/n, no change
change auto channel to fixed channels, no change
clear app caches, reboot phone, no change
The phone is not in Stamina battery saving mode. With LTE connection, I get more than 70 MB/s download speed on the phone with the same servers.
Is anyone facing the same problems, does anyone have an idea
regards,
Tom
Hello,
Is had the same issue since 2 month with my Xperia x compact.
Terrible slow WiFi. I have Android 8.0.
