Rom upgrade advice please - HD2 General

Hi,
I am currently still on the T-Mobile 1.43 rom that the HD2 came with, and i don't seem to having any real problems with the phone at all. I have downloaded T-MOBILE 1.72 from the HTC website onto my PC, but before i go ahead and put it onto my phone, i wondered if anyone could tell me what the benifits are, as i'm currently in the mode of thinking ' If it ain't broke, don't fix it ' !!! And upgrading the rom seems a little scary.
I've had my HD2 since December and its the only phone i have never got bored with, largely down to this website i think.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

The benefits depend on how you use your phone.

Upgrade T-Mobile ROM

Hi, I am absolutely new to this, I am about to take delivery of an MDA Pro on T-Mobile, and i am wondering can i install say a jasjar or O2 rom image to get round some of the problems experienced with T-Mobiles roms?
I hope someone can help
Cheers in advance
Jonathan
yes, you can arbitrarily mix Windows Mobile core, Radio stack, and Extended ROM version.
Thank you and a further Question
By using the say Imate rom, will that eliminate the problems experienced with the t-mobile rom
Cheers and thank you
Jonathan
what problems are you having
i updated a magiacn that was ok and it totally fired it beyone repair
jesus, what did you do? You've got me a little worried now since i'm looking into cooking roms or trying some other device roms on my sx66. I was under the impression that it was relatively safe if your careful.
what did you do to fry it?
i simply downloaded a rom update off the phone porivders website, ran it and my lil magican was no more lol
this is the Universal forum. Of course if you burn a ROM for a different device then it will make poof.
Back to the question - what were your problems with the T-Mobile ROM? Were they T-Mobile issues or Microsoft issues? Or radio stack?
Where can you get T-Mobile roms from other than the ones on the WIKI (which is missing links). Do T-Mobile UK publish them, as I could not see any sensible links when I was logged in.

Rom upgrade for HD2 from o2 (UK) - won't let me!!!

Hi guys, anyone know the way to overcome this?
How to upgrade to a higher ROM?
Even HTC's website won't let me downloading the ROM saying that the upgrade aren't for this device!!!
Please!
p.s. sorry I'm new to winmo...
regards!
use a gold card in sd slot or just install HSPL first
wtf is a gold card? i keep seeing people refer to it but never what it is, i imagine its a sim card with a toffee penny wrapper stuck to it lol
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591314
Basicly its a sd card with its unique serial number run though some software but as its no longer free just use hspl if you dont have a goldcard.
Forget about the goldcard, you don't need one so long as you have a copy of the original rom available, which you do. Hunt it out in the official roms forum. First post, first link, 1.43 section, its listed there. Thats your backup, then instal hspl and you can flash what you like.
Your HD2 is locked to o2 (UK) ROMs only so you cant put any of the official HTC ROMs or any of the custom ROMs from the "HD2 ROM Delvelopment" forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=534
because of this your always be running out of date software as the phone operators are always so slow at releasing updates if they do at all.
BUT if you download HSPL from the above forum thread "[HSPL] HowTo flash everything"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611433
and install it to your phone your then be able to put on any ROM you like. Don't worry its near impossible to muck anything up and you can always put the phone back to its original rom, just do a little reading if your still not sure.
Great Guys! HSPL helped!!! I've upgraded...shame I can't manage to download Rom 1.66 as it always crashes and the download in general is sooo slow (not the internet issue)...but maybe with a bit of patience I'll get it at the end!
Cheers once again!!!

HTC have now listed a new ROM upgrade (1.72.206.3 released 27/04/10) for the HD2 on their UK support website (htc.com/uk)
Let me know how you get on with it as when I enter my o2 serial number I still get the error message you mentioned. I have sent a message to HTC support...just waiting for a reply.

What about Virgin Mobile? Will they get a Rom Upgrqade???? they seems to have been left out of the loop even though they were the first (technically second) carrier of the phone.

No HD2 Rom Upgrade With T-mobile

Hi,
I have just bought a HTC HD2 from T-mobile to realise I can't upgrade the ROM through the official HTC website.
I would like to know from Virgin Costumers whether they have tried to upgrade the ROM of their HTC HD2 through the Official HTC website and whether it worked.
I am asking this because I am still on the trial period and also because of warranty issues if I try to upgrade trough another route apart from the T-mobile's...
So, the question is...
Have you got a HTC HD2 from virgin? Have you upgrade the ROM through the HTC website?
If it's vendor locked you'll need to flash HSPL to install a stock or custom ROM...see this thread for details:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609477
If I do install another ROM they say I loose the warranty...
As I still am in the trial period I could just return the mobile. But for this I need to know whether the HTC HD2 from virging is also branded or not... So I can go and get one from them and do the upgrades myself through HTC website... Withought loosing any warranty.
You can revert back to the original SPL/ROM if you need to return it for any reason...
As for the Virgin HD2, only way is putting the S/N into the ROM download page on HTCs support site and see if it allows a download. If not, it's locked
There's at least a dozen of threads about it. Don't be lazy and use search!
You won't loose the warranty, you can flash the phone back to it's original state in case you need to send it back for repairs.
You can download the original T-Mobile ROM from in here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=577717 so you can always go back if you need warranty work! I was reluctant to flash, but I did it from the original T-Mobile ROM and it has transfromed my HD2... I'm using MIRI 6.5 ROM and it is awesome, fast, stable, more RAM (with the right radio) and best of all, Youtube... GO ahead and do it. You think the HD2 is good now, wait until you unleash some of it's real potential....
Yes, that is why I am asking if there is someone who is a virgin costumer to help me with this...
I need to know if they have tried and what the outcome was.
About the warranty... The problem is that if I upgrade to another ROM and the mobile has a hardware fault that doesn't allow me to downgrade to the original ROM I suppose I would loose the warranty. This is a risk I may not want to take...
I have been talking to the tmobile technical people a lot after I realised I couldn't upgrade to a new ROM via HTC... Very annoying to know it is not possible whatsoever.
and as proof, I flashed mine back to the original ROM earlier this week. Search the ROM forum for posts by a member called 'football' who posted links to the TMo UK ROMs.
The flash back to the original ROM worked just fine, BUT it's a rubbish ROM so I'm back on 1.66
lol @ everyone pushing for the HSPL option, , , , lets not forget you cant uninstal HSPL if, for instance, the sd card reader has failed, , how would you get that fixed on warranty??
I'm not knocking it, HSPL is the first thing i did, just pointing out that restoring the warranty isn't foolproof.
in this post here a virgin user claims the phone is unlocked to the HTC website.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=632892
I didn't want to cause such turmoil...
Just want to know, from a Virgin customer, if they have managed to install the ROM update through the HTC website... if when they add their mobile serial number they are given the download option or they are barred with this message: "Sorry, this software download is not suitable for your device."
Thanks guys for the help
My son is on Virgin and his is unlocked out of the box I'am on T-Mobile (locked ) ) I am still deciding whether to update to one of the new roms on xda del. or hang out for an official rom from T-Mobile. Which I believe will be released soon with a big?????.

I had a flash fail this week. When I started the phone it booted to a black screen with some sort of warning triangle. Somehow HSPL had been removed in the botched flash and the SPL was back to 1.42.000, so putting a LEOIMG.nbh on my SD card just resulted in a 'Not Allowed' message being displayed.
However, I was still able to reflash the original TMo ROM from my PC via USB using the exe that you can find on the ROM forum. I would expect that this will only work with the exe for a ROM issued by your network though, so make sure you have that saved before you flash anything.

No doubt you flashed an official rom from the sd card, that is the only way HSPL can be removed. I really really advise people against using sd card for anything except your phones original rom. So easy to make an error.
Virgin UK HD2 is unlocked
I am a Virgin UK customer and my HD2 is indeed unlocked. When I first boot I had to select Virgin Mobile from a long list that included all the major carriers. I have no problems in updating ROMS. Their customer support is without doubt the best I have ever experienced. I do not work for them. My brother is with T-Mobile, his phone is locked down with Crap software. I am SOOOO glad I am not with them. Just check their forums. They are still on ROM 1.43 from october... no YouTube... other stuff missing and buggy... Disgrace.
Original poster: if you want the phone on contract from T-Mobile but unbranded, you could buy it through some third-party mobile-phone store chain like Car Phone Warehouse or Mobile Phones Direct. Their phones are all unbranded.
If you want to install the HTC ROM without using HSPL you could always use a gold card to flash it.

I must agree with the above. I am with T-Mobile, got my HD2 at the end of January and it had ROM 1.43. They also stripped out YouTube and Co-Pilot! I downloaded a poor-man's version of YouTube as discussed in other threads (i.e. using the IE browser on the phone to download the cab file) and thought I was cool, but with T-Mobile taking an age to release the update ROM (I have heard March, but I wouldn't hold my breath!) I decided to use HSPL and update to 1.66 from the HTC website. Best decision I made!
Not only are all the little bugs fixed, I know have the 'proper' YouTube app back (beautiful!), Co-Pilot (trial version) plus a Windows Task Manager app (very useful!).
I did alot of reading before taking the plunge though, and made backups of backups, had a roll-back plan (admittedly untested) and followed each stage implicitly! But it was very striaghtforward due to the guys on this forum doing a fantastic job!
I never made one call on my T-Mobile HD2 before I flashed over to stock HTC ROM.
Years of HTC devices and operators ROMS told me not to wait until later!

I did exactly the same!
As soon as I turned it on and saw that horrid T-Mobile logo, I turned it off again and flashed it with the HTC WWE Rom

How to Hack SPL 1.24

Hi All,
After spending a large amount of time trying to find a solution for the SPL 1.24 to hack. Mainly the Telstra Australia WM6.5 Upgrade. Combining the many efforts of XDA Members I finally got a proper working hack going. I thought I'd post it straight away for the rest of the world to see.
First what you need to do is download the WM6.5 Upgrade from the HTC Website. When you open this you need to go to Start - Run - Type %TEMP% Find the location where the extractor has dumped the files and rename RUU_Signed.nbh to MAPLIMG.nbh. Copy this to the root of the SD Card. Reset your phone into Bootloader and let the flash start. It will fail at 10% than reset itself and install it properly.
From here you need to download a cab clearsecurity.cab which is suppose to be for the Samsung Blackjack 2 but it enables the HTC Snap to be hacked.
From there download the desired Custom Rom and run 1.19 auto.bat and watch the screen go black and the custom rom install.
Any Success???
Hi, can anyone let me know if they have had the same success???
Hi Roger,
Thanks for the post as it worked a treat for me, I was able to flash the HTC Snap after following the above steps. One thing I didn't do is backup the Telstra spl 1.24, Do you know where I can get a copy from?
Once again thanks for the post.
Mr.D
THis looks great. I'd love to try this now, but before I do, I'm hoping you might be able to answer a question of mine, to ease my mind:
If you need to reinstall the original Rom and SPL 1.24, is there any way the the Telecom company can see that the phone's firmware has been previously changed?
Thanks.
Flashing back to Telstra 6.5 Rom
Hey guys, I believe you can just download the latest 6.5 Telstra Rom for the snap from the HTC website. I havern't tried it since I have hacked the phone and the only reason why you would obviously do it is for warranty. Actually I also found out that you can get WM 6.1 rom but you need to contact HTC and you can upload it from there FTP. Sorry I can't provide any more assitance maybe when my phone breaks and I need to flash it back I will post up what I have done.
Hi Roger
Thanks for the reply. This is what's stopping me from trying to flash the ROM. Knowing whether I can restore it back to it's original condition without the telecom company knowing it's been flashed. The phone is only new and if it does develop a hardware problem and I had to send it back, I'm sure they won't fix it under the warranty if they can see that it's been flashed.
If as you suggest, it's just a matter of re-flashing it with the original rom, then that's fantastic. But, I'd really like some firm confirmation before going ahead.
The ROM developed by ookba looks AMAZING and I can't wait to try it.
Thanks.
Flashing Advice
Hi Badcam,
I have owned many HTC phones and I have to say the Snap is probably the most durable out of them all. I find with the Snap and the newer models of the HTC phones from australian carriers they really lock them down and you don't get the full functions as what you pay for. Worst of all they infest the phone with all these carrier features that are not needed.
It is really your choice flashing your phone. Every single phone I have had I have flashed and never had problems only when I drop them lol. For warranty purposes you can always flash back to orginal rom and just tell them thats how you got it. They really can't say much. But I did abit of reading and when you do upgrade the rom from HTC website it does install SPL 1.24 back meaning if you want to flash it back you need to go through the hack again.
Hope this has been helpful.
You said it Roger.
There's so much Telecom rubbish on this phone, it's not funny.
Well, I'll give it a go this weekend. If you're happy it's going to work, I am too. Thanks very much for your advice.
Hey do you guys know how much (in USD) a Telstra SNAP is out there if you buy it outright? Can can anyone ship me one to the States?
What about a TelecomNZ one?
http://store.telecom.co.nz/mobile/pay-monthly/htc-s523
NZ$499.00 is around US$361
http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi?Amount=499.00&From=NZD&To=USD&x=16&y=17
I'd be happy to sort something out for you. PM me if you'd like.

Thanks but that's kinda rough. I get the MAPL100 (Dash 3G) here for $100. Looking to get a SNAP S523 for around that, even used. Let me know if you run across one. Thanks!
It's atrocious. Believe it or not, that's a good price. It's just come down NZ$200. Of course, I had to buy my two days before the reduced it.
I'll keep an eye out.

Hi, can anyone tell me how to get the device into bootloader mode? i have followed the steps, but getting it into bootloader mode and then letting it hardspl from the sd is not happening :-( THANKS!!!
Can't find clearsecurity.cab. Can anyone tell me where to find it?
Attempt to answer questions lol
Benzin,
Type in google "clearsecurity.cab download" and find the mediafire link
If you have problems please let me know. Maybe XDA-Developers already have it posted.
wcampagne,
So you are getting into bootloader right, its just not picking up the MAPLIMG.nbh file. You have renamed RUU_Signed.nbh to MAPLIMG.nbh. Also a train of through if you have tried applying previous Roms before hand I suggest you go to %TEMP% file and remove anything that is there that has reference to RUU_Signed or the rom at all. You are probably uploading the wrong file as it might be cached. As I said its just a train of thought. If you have any more problems please feel free to post up and I will figure out a fix for you.
Ookba,
Ebay is your best bet. I got my handset for $150 AUD brand new on bid.
Works great for me and I thank you so much!

Newbe!! Need advice/support t mobile uk / O2

HI Everyone,
Im back, ive decide to ditch the iphone and give the HD2 another chance!
Im with O2 3G/sim
I bought what i thought was an unbranded/unlocked HD2 of ebay but surpirise surprise is was locked to t mobile in the UK! So my day has consisted of trying to get it unlocked which i just have and also changing wap/internet setting so the bloody thing will work.
Problems: -
1 - can i install an O2 ROM so the phone works perfectly with my current O2 sim or am i barking up the wrong tree? I want to get rid of all t mobile UK pre configured/installed settings.
2 - All internet stuff seems badly slow sort of dial up speed?!
3 - Copilot isnt pre installed, any ideas where or how i can pre install it to try it out?
Any help/advice/support i would be grateful for!

Look here, http://www.4shared.com/dir/22189940/b8552fa0/Shipped_Leo_ROMs.html .
Leo 1.43 'RUU_Le2_UK_1.43.206.4_Radio_Signed_15.26.50.07U _2.04.50.22_2_Ship_WORKING.exe' I assume is the one you want, that's the stock O2 ROM. However, if you look on the HTC website there is also the ROM upgrade from 1.43/1.48 to 1.72. But as you don't have the stock O2 ROM installed Don't install the HTC upgrades before you do so.
It should have all the default O2 bloatware, including the Copilot trial.
HI Kalavere,
Thank you for the rom update, i tried installing it but this messages just comes up any ideas?
Error(294) invalid vender ID
It wont let me proceed with the rom update?
SORTED!!!
Got is sorted thanks again!
Flashed the rom and installed the newest O2 1.72 software.
The CoPilot trial is here http://www.alk.com/htc/uk/. I don't know whether you can trial the program if the evaluation has already been used.

Brilliant stuff. It's just as easy to flash a custom ROM, so give it a go sometime. They are far far better than stock.

I'd recommend NRG's EnergyROM take a look.
