How to upgrade my HTC Magic 1.5 (from Three) - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hi, I am a new member and sorry if this has been asked before but I can't find any reference to it in the forum.
I have HTC Magic (Android 1.5) from Three in Australia. I have updated the ROM with the latest Sense UI from HTC website.
I would like to install newer version of Android (1.6 or above) if possible and willing to root my phone if necessary as I have called both Three and HTC about an official update but to no avail for the last 6 months.
My phone build/config are as below:
Model number: HTC Magic
Firmware version: 1.5
Baseband version: 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.08.29
Kernel version: 2.6.27-5b476e83 htc-kernel (at symbol) and18-2 #989
So, what are my options? Any help of point to where I should look would be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

New also
I just got my first Android phone yesterday, so I'm new to this too. I figured this would be a good time to make a first post. All the Android ppl here seem very cool, so this'll be my introduction.
I got a myTouch from ebay and intend to unlock it and upgrade. Here is my short to do list:
1) get unlock code. I'm going to ask someone on Facebook who is on T-mobile to call cust support with the IMEI for me. Failing that, I'll buy one from ebay for $10 (from one of the sellers with 99% rating, thousands sold).
3) learn basics of using myTouch + Android Market in its current state. This will also let me appreciate how much better it's gonna be after step 5
4) root phone (using tutorials online) to get access to install new ROM (firmware)
5) install CyanogenMod rom. I'll probably do step 4/5 using the tutorials on the CM site. Version 5.08 (Android 2.1) just came out this week and everyone is going nuts over how great it is.

More info please. What kernel, what ROM, what root did you use? I'm nice, but some people on this forum would eat you alive for leaving a post like this.
I'm sorry amigo - I know very little about phones - new to this world. I'm pretty good with computers though. I learn fast.
It's Kernel version 2.6.29
build number SPH-D700 ECLAIR.DI18.
Firmware: 2.1-update1
I used one.click.root.exploitv2.2.4 to root the phone. I haven't installed any other ROMS (Is there a place on the phone or within Rom Manager where it displays which exact ROM I am running?).

You're already on DI18, no need to update.
The build number shows you the ROM you're running
Ah great. Thank you.

[Q] Some basic questions about rooting and installing custom ROMs

I just got a Dell Streak after my Motorola Milestone died. I've been going through all the forums on rooting and applying custom ROMs, and am now somewhat confused! I basically need to know the following:
1. I have a Streak straight from Dell India (no AT&T, no O2), which I use on a GSM network in India. Which of the available custom ROMs can I apply?
Pertinent information from the 'About' screen on my Streak:
Baseband version: GAU5B1A111800-EU
Kernel version: 2.6.29-perf
OEM version: GAU5B1A111800
Build number: 8116
2. If there is a Custom ROM available, can I get back to the original state after I upgrade to it (in case I need to send it back to Dell for any reason during the warranty period)? Would Dell know that it was flashed?
3. Would this be a one-way process (i.e., in case I wanted to go back to the Dell 2.2 version when it is released, would that be possible)?
4. Is it possible to permanently brick a Streak during the process (i.e., to a state where no further amount of re-flashing will do anything)?
From what I've read in several forums, I get hints of answers to each of these questions, but I haven't yet been able to formulate a confident solution to any of the issues!
Would really like to take my Streak to at least 2.1 (preferably 2.2), since I've been using 2.1 on my Milestone for several months now, and Dell India is talking about 2.2 only in December (they'd originally said 2.1 in November, but it now seems that it's going straight to 2.2, so nothing in November).
Sorry if this sounds like a re-hash of questions on the forums, but believe me I've looked, and while some things are clearer, others are even more blurry.
Thanks

[Q] Backup ROM before Root?

Hi Guys, I have been following all the developments for the Wildfire from the past couple of days, and, finally, have decided to give it a go and take the plunge into rooting my wildfire and installing custom ROM's.
Now, I have watched the various tutorials (Thanks to all involved in making them!), and, have properly understood the entire process, however, seeing the section on Unrooting the phone again, it says that I have to get my Stock ROM from Shipped-ROM's website, and, this is where the problem lies. My ROM is not listed at SR.
Here are the specs:
Firmware Version - 2.1-update1
Baseband Version - 13.45.55.24H_3.35.15.31
Build Number - 1.25.720.1 CL227575 Release Keys
Software Number - 1.25.720.1
Since my ROM is not listed at SR, is there any way I can take a full backup of my ROM before I root it, so that, if I need to Unroot and get back to factory settings.
Alternatively, if this is not possible, can I just download another ROM from SR with the same Radio version? Will that work?
I would just like to keep a path open so that I can get back my WF in its factory shipped state, provided something goes wrong.
Thanks for reading.
Cheers

IMO, just root your phone and then do a nandroid backup of your stock rom, BEFORE you flash a new rom. So if anything goes wrong, just restore that backup.
It's not like they're going to check every piece of software on your phone, whether you have rooted or not.

i have already did that to get the 1.83.415.4 update for my phone to be able to use the Arabic official keyboard in this newest update
or at least root my phone and get better custom stable software
i have checked the software update after downgrading but it still saying my phone software is up to date!!!!!!
Well,
i need your help getting the answers for the following:
1- Does my phone became unbranded now after downgrading? i did not saw the usual vodafone logo when starting m phone
2- is there is anyway to force my phone to update the new official software after downgrading?
3- if i can not force it to update ..what i should do to root my phone and which the most safer way to do that (please refer me to step by step guide and a working links to the required tools)
4- what's the most stable software which contains Arabic support and how i can install it in step by step guide..
Thanks in advance for your help and please excuse the long topic as am totally new to android ( it took around 2 weeks to just figure out how to downgrade my phone)
Waiting your answers ASAP
1. Yes its unbranded.
2. You can update officially by downloading an ruu but don't. Best to get radio s-off.
3. Search the development section. You want to perm root and s-off.
4. Leedroid arabic edition.

Someone Swyped my idea.
Thanks for your reply
Good news that my phone became officially unbranded
Well, in another forum (Arabic one) they just adviced me to download the official new rom 1.8xxxx on my pc (they provided me with the links)
then to connect my phne to my pc and then start the installing through my pc
No S-Off needed... No Rooting needed
and guess what... it's working like charm now
Thanks everybody
Yep, but someone could find the complete lack of root a downside

Upgrade to 2.3 on Atrix with SBF version.4.2.11.mb860.retail

My phone was originally Bell Canada, with all the associated crapware. In June, I came on here and followed instructions to upgrade to a clean ROM, using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1070076
All went ok, but now I want to upgrade to Android 2.3.
A lot of the guides seem to have big emphasis on what your existing provider is eg. Bell,AT&T etc. Because I installed this sbf, which instructions should I use. I believe it was originally a French telecoms company.
Can I just go ahead and try any of the AT&T guides?
Any tips appreciated. I'm not a complete noob, just need to know what guide to use.
System Version: Version.4.2.11.Mb860.Retail - Blurred
Build Number: Olyem_U4_2.1.1 - Greyblurred
for bell, there's a gobstopper in the development section:
