The new Google Maps update requires new / different permissions. It says it needs 'Default' permission, with the description "read Google service configuration".
Does anyone know what default permission is or where I could find a service configuration to read?
It's probably not all that important, Google knows everything about me already but I want to ~feel like~ I have some control.
I don't see such thing in the permissions list. 4.3.0 uses only one permission more than 4.2.0: android.permission.RECORD_AUDIO.
aha! i got that too and this post is the only thing i can find about it.
i found this permission while redownloading fast web installer. anyone got any ideas?

Hi, guys i look for an answer......i rooted my htc hero, changed rom with last modaco, but when i tried to use some programs it gives me an error concerning root.
For example if i use screenshot program it notices me that i need to be rooted, how is it ossible if i'm already rooted?
Sorry for my english if i made some errors
"rooted" means that you can get root permissions if you want them (like running a program that needs those permission). but for security reasons you don't have this permissions always. so when something want these permissions this dialog shows up and wants your "OK" to give root permissions to this program. thats normal.
There is an app in the menu that is named "root" or something, this is where you set your permission rules, if I remember correctly
Thanx guys.....now the program I needed works.....dunno why yet, but the important is that it works
Hello everyone
I am sorry that my first post is a request, but I couldn't find what I need anywhere.
I have a SCH-i705 running Android 4.1.2, it is not mine, but belongs to the company I work for. they have an Admin app installed that blocks google play; they don't want users to install apps that might interfere with their installed app. however, I can install and uninstall apps using adb.
I need to update Google Maps to the latest v7. I searched and downloaded a copy, but it flickers too much, and I read somewhere that I need the version that is specific to this device. I tried with androidvm in virtualbox and downloaded a copy, but the same thing, flickering, maybe I didn't provide the emulator with the correct specifications for this tab. I tried also to modify google play by renaming the package then repackage it using apktools, but I might missed something because the new renamed phonesky package crashes with error Can't find resource for bundle 'org.keyczar.i18n.messages_en_US', key ''
solving this problem for a newbie to android programming might take some time, so for now, I need copy of the Maps app pulled from this device if possible or be pointed to a renamed google play or a replacement for it.
thanks in advance.
Thank you Jxt., I will download it.
on the other hand, someone at another forum told me to use Real APK Leecher which is here at xda. I will give it a try too.
Hello there,
I have rooted my nook simple touch using the guide found bellow:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35267728#post35267728
It worked out after a while of struggling, but now I am wondering how am I able to install 3rd party android apps on it? I have downloaded a test .apk application on the nook toc heck either it is working. It comes out that it doesnt, but maybe its because i went browsing for it using the library app, as I havent found any other file browser on the system. I amrunning the latest 1.2.1 version.
I Would really aprichiate some help in this matter, I tried googling out but i havent found anything specific to help me solve the problem, there were some solutions to the newer models that dont apply for me.
@bremenpl,
Arguably, the best file explorer available for the Nook Touch is ES File Explorer 3 (free on Google Play). It's what I use.
To enable 3rd-party app installation, install NookColor Tools, open the app, and check the box for "Allow Non-Market Apps".
The problem is I dont have any file browser at all and I cant install any .apk on my nook. NookColor Tools is also an .apk and I cannot open this kind of file in library browser. How to overcome that? I dont have google apps installed as I didnt want to install google play, gmail and etc. I tried loging into amazon appstore that is installed, but it doesnt accept my login nad password.

Ah, I see your point. Thankfully, this can be remedied if you have either ADB set up, the app Terminal Emulator, or both. What do you have?
I have none of it. Whats more straight forward to do?

I'd say Terminal Emulator, but that's yet another app that you need non-market permission to install.
ADB it is, then. PM me for extensive installation instructions.
I've got quite a few apk mods off of here that bypass location or needing another app installed like Amazon store. Just wondering if anyone has considered modding Hulu (if it's even possible) to bypass location.
I know it's a new app so it will be a while if it is done, but is anyone else having an issue using the new app?
The new app says I'm at the wrong IP address / zip code and won't let me login.
If I uninstall the update I can login just fine.
I was having an issue with it. It wouldn't even open. Just give me an error saying 'unable to open'. I went into Magisk Manager and selected "Magisk Hide" from the drop down menu. Then scrolled through my apps and checked Hulu. I was then able to open the app and everything worked fine. Didn't even have to restart.
It wouldn't open for me, so I updated it... now it will not register the ok button on my keyboard (only this app, and all other controls work).
Hi All
I've successfully rooted a nook simple touch with touchnooter-2-1-31 and enabled the playstore with NTGAppsAttack-0.5.0.
However when entering my gmail details i get a message that it can't establish a reliable data connection to the server despite being on wifi.
Its took weeks to get to this point that i dont wont to give up on it just yet. Is there anything else i can do to get this working? I want to download kindle app.

No, no, and no. No GApps or Playstore access. If you want the Kindle app search the forum for the modified one and side load it. You'll also need to update cacerts.bks in order to sign in.

I have tried looking in the forum but there doesn't seem to be a dedicated downloads area, installs and files it seems are attached to posts like this one. So i'm reading through post after post to see if someone as added anything in . Its very time consuming ,confusing and there's rarely confirmation in the posts that the attachments work.
Is this the one i need??

What do i do with cacerts.bks?

That is the correct Kindle app. There are a few updated cacerts.bks files now. Here is a link to one with instructions: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/nst-g-revisiting-cacerts-bks-t3872617
Oh, and you need to check your email when you are trying to sign in. Amazon requires a two-step authorization for this old app. They will send you a one-time password to use. It will look like the login has failed, but just check your email.

ok i've installed kindle app using apk and copied a cacerts.bks file from the link you provided into files/system/etc/security
both /etc/security didn't exists so i created them, is this correct? The kindle app is asking me to 'register to get started'
If try and log on in this window i get 'no internet connection' error. There's links below for 'forgot password', amazon.com.jp customer?' and 'don't have an amazon account'.

No. Those directories must exist on the device, so either the ancient rooting method you used did not work properly or else you are using some kind of file manager that does not show everything. Some of the old rooting methods may fail with FW 1.2.2 (which is what I assume you are using).

Yes, did you see the last bit I added to my previous post? When you try to login with your Amazon account you get an error and Amazon almost immediately sends you an email with a one-time password to enable the old Kindle app to login. BUT, without the updated cacerts.bks file functioning, any login attempt--even with the one-time password--will fail.
You said "file/system/etc/security". What is "file" doing in there? The folder you want is at root so the address is just /system/etc/security. Unless you meant something else.
Okay i can see the security folder now by following post 3 by Overbytes here https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/view-root-files-nst-t2817036
"If you're using ReLaunch that was installed with NookManager, to change the launchers behavior from the home screen click on the gear in the upper right corner, this enters you into the settings menu, click on advanced settings, general settings, make sure that the don't leave start directory item is unchecked, go back and under file manager settings check show hidden files and uncheck hide known extensions. Back out again and in the main advanced settings menu scroll down and click on the save settings and restart item. You should be able to view anything on internal and external storage."
However when try to copy the i simply get an error message 'unable to copy/move cacerts.bks
Maybe the device isn't rooted????

I'm not sure Relaunch can do what you need. You can "see", yes, but that doesn't mean you can change. To do that, /system has to be mounted as R/W and I don't know if Relaunch can do that. Back in the day I used an app called Root Browser. Now I just use ES File Explorer as a general file manager. It can be set for root access and also can mount /system so you can make changes. I've attached a copy below.
why play store is not available in my phone?

If you are asking about the NST, Google abandoned Android 2.1 back in 2017. No market access. You'll have to search online for what you want and side-load it.
