Just can't get the keyboard down... - EVO 4G General

This is my first Android phone and I am having a horrible time with the keyboard. I have had the EVO for about a week now and just can't get the hang of the keyboard down. I am always making mistakes, and have to say that I am an above average keyboarder.
Any suggestions? I tried using swype but it slows me down to much lol

You slowly start getting used to it with the autocorrections. I came from a G1 and honestly, I'd love to have a hardware keyboard. If I was given a chance to swap for a Galaxy S Pro, I'd do it just for the keyboard
Anyway, have you try calibrating your keypad?

Give swype a try. Once you use it you'll wonder how you ever got by without it.

Swype takes a week or so to get used to and for it to get used to you. You also have to play with the settings a bit, start out slow and don't try to go quickly when you are first learning.
There are also some swype alternatives in the market you can try.

I think swype is a waste. Just build your android dictionary and you will type fast and efficient. Make sure u use auto correction!

im having lots of trouble wit the keyboard to and im coming from the iphone where i typed really fast n had very very lil mistakes. i keep hitting the damn period button everytime i try to hit the space bar, the button is just too small i guess. hopefully different keyboards come through the market for me to try.

Yeah the auto-correct is a life saver, it usually corrects what I am trying to say lol. Yeah I have done the calibration, and it seems to have helped. Wish there was a little more depth to the calibration though.
The small space bar is for sure annoying, I always hit the period also.

I'm assuming by little spacebar you mean when you hit the search button or something of the sort if you hit search button one more time it will bring the big spacebar back

have you tried to xda keyboard? i believe Fresh rom has it. it gets rid of the placement arrows and i believe it makes the keys a little bigger. I've never had any problem typing with the evo's keyboard. Coming from the hero this screen size is sooo much better to type on. Sure i make a few mistakes here and there but auto correction generally fixes them for me. Also, the stock android keyboard is actually pretty decent. I used it for a while on my hero. Maybe install that and give it a try.

I am not a big auto-correction fan, so I disabled mine. That combined with the IME v27 keyboard I got from another thread makes typing so much better for me. IME Link

no when u try to hit the spacebar on the keyboard. its too small n we always hit the period button next to it.

Came from the G1 and I do not miss the physical keyboard at all. I thought I would have hard time, but I picked it up after a day. The larger screen definitely helps. I'm also using the mod, which is more responsive than the stock VK.
From the HTC Evo!!

Thanks for this, I always thought those arrow keys were a waste of space. This keyboard seems to be much more responsive to the way that I type. I am much more accurate on it, so it seems anyways lol. Just wish some of the bottom row was removed to make room for a bigger space bar haha.

I use "A better keyboard" and find the button spacing perfect. with that and autocorrection on, I can actually type faster on it than with a physical keyboard.

I admit I didnt read the thread.. here are my two cents:
Swype was ESSENTIAL on my hero but without the trackball or on screen nav button like the EVO kb has Swype is kinda handicapped on the EVO.
Forget about accuracy, just type and learn to let the autocorrect do it's thing
re read what you typed to ensure it's accurate until you get real good at it but again, just type. Most of your typos will be fixed automatically
I'm really impressed with the IME on the EVO, it was a pretty big disappointment for me on the hero...

That is generally what I try to do, but certain text inputs don't take advantage of the auto correct so I have to be more careful on those. Wish they all did lol...

Keyboard - Are you happy?

Hi All,
I've tried for the past several days to find any word on what it's like typing on the TD2/Pure keyboard and cannot seem to find anything substantial. I like the look and feel of the phone and think I want one. However, I need to know from someone who has had one for a while what it's like typing on it daily. Speaking for me, I've got short stubby fingers and thumbs. Is that a problem? Will I end up using the stylus most of the time?
Also in the store, the keyboard wouldn't switch to landscape in anything other than the messaging applications. When I tried to use it in Word, it stayed in portrait mode.
Thanks in advance.
I've had my Pure for 3 days. I been using the Fuze for the past year. It's taking a little while to get use to the on-screen keyboard. I too have fat fingers. A friend of mine just bought a Sprint Hero. I really like the on-screen keyboard that comes with it. If I can find a similiar one for the Pure I'll be a lot happier. In the meantime I'll keep using the stylus when I need to type quickly and accurately.
had my Topaz since may 7th, many texts every day and its good Not as fast as a physical keypad, and you cant touche type well with it ofc. BUT, it is easy. It has auto correction built in, so you almost always get the right words. I run mine atm in Phone keypad mode, (2abc 3def etc) because the keys are bigger, altho the full Qwerty is also good
Also i by no means have small hands and i almost never use the stylus ;P
I got fat fingers as well and no nails. (I bite) and I can say I type really quick on the keyboad. I would type quick on the original HTC Touch aswell and that screen sucked. What I've noticted is that people use the tip and or pad of their thumb which blocks the screen. I type and use the phone by using the inner top edge of my thumbs. I get a bettr view of the screen and can type very accurtate in portrait view. I use both thumbs when typing aswell.
Oh and this is on the qwerty keyboard. People are surprised at how fast I can type on it. Way faster than using a normal keyboard. (1-9) I would a like to sugest to try out the 20key qwerty if you are having problems with the full qwrety. type a blackberry.
This is the first device I've used that didn't have actual keys, and for the first couple of hours, I got frustrated and resorted to the stylus. However, after another couple of hours making a good attempt to get used to the keyboard, I did, and my accuracy and speed are both pretty good now.
I use Fingerkeyboard and I am very happy. Of course it was better on my blackstone than on my topaz due to the bigger screen, but I found that I can type faster on this on-screen keyboard than I could on the physical keyboard of the xperia... On-screen keyboards are more sensitive IMO.
Well - After everything I had read and studied, I made the leap yesterday and purchased the Pure. It was a bit awkward at first and the typing was pretty much hit and miss. After burning through a few emails and texts, I think I've got the hang of it. It does seem that part of my problem is the screen calibration is a bit off. I figured this out by using the stylus in the contact list and if I hit the "T", the "S" list came up. The typing was easier than I expected but it's amazing how much screen real estate the keyboard takes up in landscape mode.
Thanks for all the replies.
Yeah you can recallibrate in the settings, will help Glad you got one.
I love it!
Here's a tip... Instead of pecking at the letters, if you hold your finger on the letter for just a tad longer, it will "popup" the letter. Got the wrong one, just roll your finger a little until the right one comes up.
You don't have much time to do this, but it's very easy to get used to!

That's strange that it's off like that. My Topaz came precalibrated just fine. Go to Settings in Touchflo then Menu>All Settings>System>Screen and you should be able to re-calibrate. If its like the original TD2 it you won't be able to re-calibrate unless you flash a cooked ROM.
Do you use both thumbs or one hand and one finger to type. Both thumbs work grand for me.
The keyboard itself is wonderful, nice layout and everything. But sometimes even if I press kinda hard the key I pressed don't show up which means I always have to press kinda hard to be sure to get the key I pressed.
Does anybody have the 20 key keyboard .cab? I might give it a go again. Can't seem to find it...

Hold they key on the screen it should pop up the letter to verify. Maybe that's a euro td2 vs usa pure thing?
My unlocked diamond did this out of the box, so hmmm.

Maybe I confused you a little, I mean when I press on the screen nothing happens which means I have to press harder than I want to. It might be the TD2 screen itself because if you press on it you can feel that goofy thing, it's like some plastic glass instead of real glass (like on Diamond).
I gotcha.
I have a diamond too, and the screen seems just the same.
I have noticed that the actual LCD is sunk a little more down on the TD2 over the TD.
I actually welcome this as there's less glare and better readability of the screen.
try cliquick keyboard its the largest i can find lol

Keyboard size

What is the biggest keyboard which can be installed on the HTC HD2? I have tried swype and the standard keyboard that comes with the phone, but I tend to be hitting the key next door at times resulting in me taking longer than I would like to send a simple text.
I haven't seen an Iphone keyboard before but I have not heard anyone mentioning the difficulties with the typing on that phone, I could be wrong of course.
I need some decent size keys to press, it wouldn't of been to bad if we had a stylus in the phone.
Trust me, the Iphone keyboard is harder to use.
I always miss the buttons on the standard keyboard, but is it really a problem?
XT9 corrects me 98% of the time.
And with swype its not a problem at all...
You are swyping the keyboard, right? Because its almost impossible to press the buttons.
Maybe my damn fingers are just too big, with swype I find myself rolling my finger to see if I'm swiping the right key or the one beside it. Oh well let's see how it goes.
Cheers
Then you could consider the possibility to move the keyboard on the horizontal way, using software as girator, then if you use both the thumbs with an angle of 90 degrees it is really easy to write, look in youtube a video that shows how a iphone user can write faster than one that use the great swype on hd2, it is just a matter of pratical skill that stems for some training. anyway there are software that use bigger keyboard, if I well remember is the spb keyboard.
3 solutions...
1)swype
2)training
3)spb keyboard
seems easy...
Yeap practice is definately the way forward in this case I think

the iphone is much more accurate then hd2.i own the hd2 and the htc shift.
Accuracy depends on each and every person. You can`t say that one keyboard is more accurate than another, because only the person typing can be more or less accurate when using one of the keyboards. I`ve used both the iPhone and the HD2 (which I own) and I would go for the HD2`s keyboard anytime. But that`s just my opinion.
As for the OP`s problem, use SPB Keyboard if you have a hard time typing on the stock keyboard.

Horrible Keyboard On 2.1, Any way To Put Keyboard From 1.6?

A few hours ago I updated to the 2.1.
The main thing that is far worse is the keyboard. It seems far less accurate, I'm making many more mistakes than before, sometimes I have to press the same button twice, it seem's unresponsive and slow, if you rush it you make mistakes.
It's like it's running slow and there is no num pad, the keyboard is much worse than 1.6
Is there ANY way I can use the old keyboard? I wish there was a way I could use the previous full sized keyboard, quicker and more responsive...
Matter of fact, what does everyone think the best keyboard for the streak is?
Not sure if I am doing something wrong , but I have been unable to use any other keyboards , they install OK , and I can select them , but when I go to select it , it's still the Dell one that pops up . I used Better Keyboard on 1.6 and preferred it.
With the new one , I seem to "miss" the top row of keys for some strange reason ! , usually I'll notice I have missed an "e" in a word .
Same, at first kept missing the top row of keys, you just need to hit a little bit lower.
Or use a multitouch keyboard like smart keyboard, just annoying that it takes up the whole screen.
I'm using the SWYPE keyboard. Works great for me on 1.6

I haven't upgraded to 2.1 yet as i rather wait for the official OTA, I am also using swype keyboard I find it quite good too. I also found a stock one a bit difficult to type on with out making typo's but it was nice idea having the number pad. But I heard many people were crying about it being rubbish.
Funny now seeing people who have upgraded to 2.1 and with the new dell stock keyboard people are also making noise about how poor it is. Looks like dell can't get the keyboard right. I think dell should left the original keyboard and pre-install swype for people. This give users best of both worlds I think.
The original keyboard was rubbish, agreat idea but impossible to type accurately. The new keyboard is better but still not great. Swype is be rest so far even as a touch type.
Ps to get keyboards to work (ie instead of the default), first enable it in the settings then hold you finger in any typing box until the options appear then choose input, then chose desired keyboard.

Its a good idea that and swype would be handy yet i prefer the 1.6 keyboard my only issue is that it isnt multi touch. Which cause me to make errors so for the time being its swype maybe not as fast but hey its effortless.
I use SLIDE IT has more features than SWYPE
Just to balance the argument a bit - I much prefer the 2.1 keyboard to the 1.6 version.
I have big fingers and my accuracy has improved enormously -I haven't even bothered re installing swype.
So i guess it is all down to personal preference.
I prefer the old one....just cause it had the FN key shown and also the arrows that are useful when i want to go back in typing.
I also agree with those who tell that the new one is not accuracy like in 1.6, i noticed that when i type delete it often type "L" letter. For this i would like to ask if the re-calibration may work....

The new keyboard is just terrible. Nearly eVERY word I type theres a mistake and it's slow and cannot keep up with the original.
I also noticed the keyboard is TOO LOW and that is why I'm making mistakes, the old keyboard was higher and in line with the fingers, therefore easier and I miss the NUMPAD!!!

new swype is making my life suck

So i got an email yesterday from swype saying that they had a new update. I have used swype religiously for months now and loved it so I was happy to see an update..
WOW.. its HORRIBLE. literally 90% of the words i try to type are wrong! Anyone else using it and hate the update yet?
I have had the same issues, however this is a fresh install which means swype needs to relearn what words you use most often and the context in which you use them. I believe all you have to do is type a word (not swype it) them press space to add it to the dictionary. I've ben doing this with like nicknames and slang words I use most often and my swyper its already performing much better. Do I have those right, anyone?
Yeah I've noticed that the accuracy for the way I type has gone way down in the new version. Was a much better typer on the older version.
Guys, try moving the slider bar in the swype settings screen that controls accuracy vs speed. Makes a HUGE difference.

I did try adjusting it, but they must have tweaked the slider and it needs to be moved way over towards accuracy to be similar to the last beta.
i have adjusted the bar and still hate it. and its not slang/nickname type stuff its simple words! I know it has to "learn" you but before i loved it even with a fresh install. I need to find an old version and put it back on there. I also hate how when you do type it doesnt actually input the word until word is complete. Lots of things.. i just hate it
i used swype for a good couple of months and have just started using swift key beta again. IMO it has the best speed to accuracy ratio.
Are you guys using the one with the microphone on the keyboard? What version are you using?
Old swype...
1.60.38.8214
Got it from a link here somewhere a month out do ago...
All of the common words that I and most people use are always "hidden words". It really pisses me off how it pops up 3 - 5 times every texts. I'm going back to the iPhone next time around.
I'm pretty sure the biggest problem with swype is that the corrections you make to words (i.e...replacing the second half of a word that was half right) adds that letter combination to your library. I hate the 3-5 letter nonsense words that hide the real words I'm going for. Yeah...that hidden word window really sucks, and honestly should just go away.
I have my bar all the way to the accuracy side and still it is very inaccurate, never had these issues before. If i swype 'you' it gives me 'tutu' 80% of the time when the line never touches t

This happens to me all the time. Even if you turn off the Tip Indicator, go through the entire tutorial, it still pops up this stupid freaking message every other word. It is driving me nuts and I'm uninstalling Swype since there is no way to turn this off.
It's working fine for me, and I use both the English AND Spanish dictionary's. Haven't really noticed any difference between this version and the last.
My only complaint is, the new Samsung comes with Swype installed, and it has the microphone key - why doesn't this "update" have it?
I think they added to many new weiss - I keep making mustards. I want the old swype back!
Typed that in swype then had to edit -

Blur keyboard

Hate to say it but I love the blur keyboard. I tried gingerbread keyboard for a while and at first hated it but after a few days got used to it. As soon as I went back to blur I fell in love within an hour.
My question is, how do I permanently make the smiley button next to the space bar, into the enter key. Sometimes it is enter and sometimes it is a smiley.
Does anyone else like the blur keyboard as much as I do? I also like the toned down intensity of the haptic feedback on the blur board as well.
My true favorite is the swype keyboard but it doesn't auto correct

Really? I like the overall presentation (big keys, etc.) but I find that the blur multitouch keyboard doesn't really feel like multitouch to me. If I type really fast where sometimes my presses overlap, it often misses some of the letters I typed, even though they flashed above the keys onscreen. They just didn't actually appear in the textbox I'm typing in.
For example, type the word "what" as fast as you absolutely can, with very light taps (in portrait mode). I find that more often than not, I get the word "hat" or other misspellings. I didn't miss the key; the popup shows that it was typed, but it just didn't appear.
I hate to say it, but I learned my virtual keyboard typing on the iPhone and iPod Touch and those devices never lost some of my presses, despite fast, overlapping presses.
I tested many, many keyboards from the market, and you know what? The Gingerbread keyboard and Better Keyboard 8 are really the only ones that could handle really fast light typing. I also like Swype though, and use the beta version. It's quite good when you just want to do some one hand typing.

You're right about the blur keyboard missing inputs I never typed fast enough to notice it. I'm trying better keyboard 8 right now and like it but its glitched and keeps asking me to activate it, so I can't enter the options menu for the board.

So I got beta swype and while it functions better I don't nearly like the skin as much. Also it doesn't auto correct only auto suggests properly spelled words.

Try smart keyboard plus. Hands down the most customizabld keybaord ever and by far the most responsive. I love the fact that I am able to resize the keyboard all I want and I'm also able to disable full screen landscape mode which is the biggest failure of all keyboards on android

Wow. This thing is great! True multi touch; it never misses a single word no matter how fast I type. Also I am able to even customize the length of the vibration for haptic which I love because the blur board had a very short, very light feedback and I am able to recreate that with this new board. And the skinning is just icing on the cake. Thank you!!!

Nice! Don't know how I missed this one. Better Keyboard has pretty much all the features mentioned EXCEPT it doesn't auto correct anywhere near as well as this one does. I guess I'll have to add this to my collection...
By the way, what skin are you guys using? I just found "Rapid" for Better Keyboard which looks really nice. Similar to the stock Blur keyboard, but better! It works just as well with Smart Keyboard too.
