Froyo source is now available - Hero CDMA General

I figured this deserved a thread.

UPDATE: Cyanogenmod incoming. http://androidandme.com/2010/06/news/8-android-phones-will-get-froyo-early-thanks-to-cyanogenmod/

Dang, beat me to it. I was just going to link the adroidcentral article. Today is a great day for android!

all right! Devs get on it... oh wait, I forgot. Dev get on it.

I wish I knew more about all of this. We have a fully working kernel source for our 2.1 ROMs. Does that mean that porting 2.2 will be a snap, or am I missing something here?
Darch seems to be on it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6918210&postcount=1393

Darchstar said he would be able to get a working port for us by tomorrow xD I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

This is news to me: http://twitter.com/cyanogen/statuses/16869433998
Apparently Cyanogen himself is officially working on the HeroC? Is this new?

I just lost all respect for myself......
"froyo source dropped?" "AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!" *waves arms in the air then falls out of chair*
IRL.
FAIL.

I hope so. That would be great... Although we have great developers already here.

See this & it's reply.
Since Darchstar has a HeroC vendor tree already setup, this is the reason.

Wow. So I guess we get an official Cyanogenmod ROM in the near future. That November Evo upgrade eligibility date is suddenly hurting much less.

i'm feeling the same way!

I could still care less about the Evo. It's WAY too big IMHO. Who wants a brick in their pocket, apparently quite a few due, but whatever :-/

This definitely will make the wait for my next phone much easier. Now just need to decide which one I want next.

Oh shut up. Our developers here are no different than other devices in regards to donations. It is more difficult to port ROMs to Galaxy S phones then most other devices.

You're certainly welcome to show these "slow devs" how it's done. C'mon what are you waiting for? What? Can't do better? Didn't think so.
lucky for us, the Nexus S is close close to our SGS that it will help alot with porting. I caught someone's twitter last night that had Gingerbread running on their Vibrant.
If you can't do this stuff yourself, you have no right making the statement that the people that are doing it are slow. If you could do it, you wouldn't be here bashing the ones that can.

They are working for free in their spare time. They owe you nothing.
No phone has a fully function version of Gingerbread. It will be a while before you can use it for everyday use.
And finally, GTFO.

This an android 2.3 os alpha version because it seem fast, but alot of feature of native android apps or function doesnt work yet or isnt in this rom yet.
Is an early test developer rom, should be able on beta by late January and full stable by feb. Pure assumption so far coming from me on timetable of this development.

Something New to Flash?

When are we going to get something new to flash? I've been jones'n for like a month now. What is next on the horizon for EPIC users? I need a tease to at least wet my whistle. It's been too damn quiet on the new custom roms front!
You could always make something yourself if you want to flash something so badly. The devs here work hard with what little they have to work with and are, quite frankly, terribly underappreciated.

Clearly he's following the everything's ok theme.
I can understand your anxiousness in wanting to have a new rom to experience but truthfully... we have what we need. Either acs or midNIGHT should be enought to keep you happy on your epic. If you want something to look forward to think about gingerbread and our epics finally being pushed to they're max. After gingerbread, if its light on bugs that is, the epic will finally reach its limits.

Where can I find updates? The cm7 thread was locked, and the closest I could find was a how-to for building it from souce. But it says that compiling now will brick the phone.

Okay, if you say so. Not like I don't want CM7 also, but the thread got locked, there aren't any updates anymore made public and you are pipe dreaming if you think the source code is going to be that big miracle to push CM7 to our phones. It will come eventually, but I wouldn't bet on it anytime soon. Most of us will have moved on by the time it releases and makes this phone what it should have been since last year.

And yes -- I think the Epic has a long life ahead of it. It's a great device and one of the last phones to really have everything and be free of a bootloader (aside from HTC's stuff). The dev's are doing a great job rebuilding an entire layer of software to get this phone supported -- basically like being a very clever caveman trying to build a car. Totally can't wait until we get a release! Thanks for all your hard work, devs!
As soon as work settles down (soon), I'll hop on the dev bandwagon.
No matter what, CM7 will be out.
I plan on having this phone for 2 years. No way I'm spending $400 on a new phone.

Fo sho. I haven't ben on the touch pro 2 for 9 months, and when I strolll by their forum, I don't even recognize the names of new roms and the devs and posters. This phone may have two or three waves of owners. The early adopters, then the late adopters, then the second hand era in another year or so on ours.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
That's great news decadence thank you. Also this phone is awesome especially with a fully functional cm7. I still haven't really seen a phone that compares with this epic yet. I might even have this for 2 years from now. Dual cores will prolly be more buggy at first and they won't really be optimized for android or apps for atleast another year or so. So I'm good with this phone.

My impression from skimming that ongoing discussion was- the final consensus was that our phones don't have the hardware to support it. Despite probably some misleading tidbit of information a long time ago.

Ability to live without it or not, they won't release it. Its somewhere in the spectrum of "unwritten rule of XDA" to potentially a law, I'm not sure. Regardless its a good idea. Don't want a buggy ROM to lead to someone dying!
