Most people don't yet know that many Android software leak all sorts of information to the internet with only scant user acknowledgement (basically what you accept when you install the app).
Due to this and the fact that there are already privacy information harvesting apps for Android on the marketplace - a team of security experts have created TaintDroid:
What is TaintDroid?
From the project's web page: "A realtime monitoring service called TaintDroid that precisely analyses how private information is obtained and released by applications "downloaded" to consumer phones."
From: http://appanalysis.org/index.html
How can I install TaintDroid?
As TaintDroid is currently compiled into the kernel, you cannot easily install it, but you have to cook your own kernel. Instructions (for Nexus 1) are available at the project web site: http://appanalysis.org/download.html
How does TaintDroid work?
Here's a video demonstrating how TaintDroid works once it is installed and configured:
http://appanalysis.org/demo/index.html
Why would you want to install this?
There can be many reasons for installint TaintDroid:
- You want to learn about privacy features and play with Android kernel
- As it is currently impossible to differentiate between innocent and sneaky Android apps based only on what access rights they request, you may want to dig in deeper
- You are worried about what apps are doing behind your back and you want to know which apps to uninstall
- You want to help create Android a more secure and privacy-protected platform, instead of the swiss cheese it currently is
What can you do?
As compiling kernels is mostly beyond the reach of mere mortals currently, consider cooking TaintDroid into your kernel, if you are cooking one yourself and offering it available for others to try and use.
Hopefully increased awareness and usage will bring this program eventually into other modders and perhaps even Google's attention and something more easily accessible is offered for the public at large.
BTW, I'm just a user, interested in getting TaintDroid on my own Galaxy S. I'm not affiliated with the research program, but I like what they are doing. This information is purely FYI.
+1 for the idea

Since we cannot expect information gatherer Google to come up with a good privacy protection mechanism soon I think we are forced to take measures ourselves.
I also learned that several of my bought applications are constantly forcing me to enable synchronisation and/or 3G internet. They either randomly uninstall (Asphalt 5), their icons disappear (for example: Mini-squadron) or won't start, with (Schredder Chess) or without a message. Angry Birds Beta2 lite (free game) and Hungry Shark are 2 more examples. So much for an incentive to buy games...
It would be great if applications used a well-defined mechanism to check their validity on-line, and not have this sneaky, lingering attack from all sides to any privacy or battery consumption aware user.
I can not cook Kernels, but this is something i want to use.
Not that i am worried, but i dont know what apps are sending when you open them. Thats something i want to know!
I am sure i am not the only one.

Yes please... This should be in all android phones... as a security option you could turn on!!!

And do some of these applications only send stuff when you open them?

From a user perspective it currently is really difficult to judge applications that need to start at boot-up and deal with many facets of your computer (Launchers, tools combining lots of divers features).
Do you know some ROM where Taindroid is included?
I've posted in hardcore and laststufo kernel threads to ask if they could add it.
We just need more people wanting it so they think about adding it

glad you did that
+1 support the idea. hope some of our hardworking kernel builders will add this in.
My concern is how much another real time service will affect battery life. For people trying to make the leanest, fastest kernel I'm not sure it's viable.
I have been wanting TaintDroid built into android by default since the day it was announced, but I really do not think google cares about this, so please, please ROM cookers out there (Maybe Doc?), lets add this into our galaxy S roms.
Well, this seems to work only on android 2.1
Make it so.

Combined with walldroid (or other firewall) this could put back power into users hands. Would really love to see this inside hardcores kernel. Maybe as an option for the stable releases?

This should be the next standard in aAndroid
idea about spoofidroid application
how about a program to spoof or make the phone send fake:
GPS location,
IMEI,
phone number,
simcard id,
etc... information to applications that ask without permission.
this way you can feed these application with information they want but without breaking your privacy. (both end sides are more than happy)
-----
nice option to have:
1) enable/disable auto generate different id every time.
2) allow list / ban list of application to have real or fake id.
3) enable/disable notify for application request.
-----
there are all ready applications that fake your simcard PLMN mobile network codes without the need of kernel rights, but you need to enable disable the flight mode to restore the default code.
===========
good luck to spoofidroid or similar applications.

I hope there will be developers out there who prioritize privacy/security over speed/battery and storage usage.
I'm the project lead of the TaintDroid system. We are currently working on a few extensions of TaintDroid but unfortunately are short on engineering resources to port TaintDroid onto other systems than Nexus One that we originally developed. We'd greatly appreciate it if XDA developers would take on this effort! Many ongoing projects would hugely benefit from having easy-to-run TaintDroid ROM available for many different devices and upcoming Android systems let alone user benifit.
Thanks,

beta2 lite? i think that was malware, make sure it came from rovio otherwise it's fake and you should delete it.
It's really scary to see with the lookout app how many apps can access to your imei, telephone number "Read Identity Info", can access your contacts, track your position, and can send out all this data.
Here a HTC Desire user, asking for some privacy.

Hi all!
I'm in my final year and we're supposed to do a project which is worth 200 marks overall. Most of us in our field have chosen to develop either android or iphone applications. My group and I have chosen adnroid.
Now, I'm in need of simple ideas for the apps. We have absolutely no idea on how to go about with the process. I've seen lots of people here develop stunning applications here! We're in need of ideas for developing simple apps.. which can be completed in a max of 2-3 months (considering the fact that we don't have any background knowledge on android development/programming. All we know is Java)
I'd initially suggested an automatic mobile credit recharge system, where in the app monitors you prepaid account balance from time to time and recharges the account once the credit falls below a user set value.
Although this seemed interesting at first, it can only be simulated with 2 databases (one for the mobile credit and another for the bank account)
After going through the type of apps here, I really want to develop something much better than this.
I'm open to all ideas, in fact, we don't mind developing an app that is already existing (for instance a profile manager or a data wallet etc) All we want is to have a fully complete app at the end of 2 months.
Please assist.
Thanks!
Secret Santa?
That's something that I thought up over winter break and whipped it up over a few days in the App Inventor. If you guys take your time, you can probably learn Android programming and design/code it in a month or so.
There are some "special" features that I added to make the app more useful but I'll leave that for you to think up.
I'll post back if I come up with anything else. I also need some app ideas, but just for recreational programming.
Thanks! I'm currently checking out appInventer.. I somehow find it hard to come up with ideas which is why I'm trying to find help from here :|
I think the credit recharger is a pretty cool idea, personally. But I understand that you might want something with more "impact"
I think part of the key to this would be figuring out what has not already been done to death. There are so many apps with 5, 6, 7, etc versions of the basically the same thing. I would try to find something to develop with less competition, even if it's more of a niche product. I'm trying to think of the things I've previously thought "I wish I had an app for ____" but I'm drawing a blank right now.
If I think of anything I'll be sure to post it back in here

Thanks! I checked out google appInventer tutorials.. theres one which says "no text while driving" -- basically sends back an sms to the sender that ur driving.. It seems interesting so I'm gonna see how best i can use it and pack some more useful stuff along with it.. and see how it all works out.
The reason why I'm giving the auto recharge a back seat is because it can't be implemented in real time.. it can only be simulated in a virtual environment.
You might want to think about doing something that takes advantage of the maps api. It's easy to do but it looks impressive and might help you get high marks.
A great idea?!
Graphics artist here,
Something I just thought of and just started searching for (literally) when I came across your thread, would be: Using the phone as a touch sensitive.. control for editing software, ie photoshop or paint.net. Basically turn the phone into a touchpad control for a computer.
Just an idea!

This would be great! I'd definitely pay a couple/few dollars for something along these lines if it was user-friendly
Thats a really awesome idea!! Converting the touchscreen into a tablet input for PS or any other photo manipulation software.. But the problem is that I don't know where to begin! :|
This is a college project so the idea isn't to make a unique and sell-able application... it's to demonstrate that you can work as part of a team to make an application from design to completion.
I'd try and think of a fun app (i wouldnt care if it's been done 100 times before) that everyone on your team wants to contribute to. If it's unique, brilliant, if not nevermind you've got some good experience working as a team and making an android app.
I do like the sound of the phone touchpad app, it's been done on iPhone by Logitech but i've not seen something for android. If it helps, http://blog.logitech.com/2010/01/29...-touch-into-a-wireless-trackpad-and-keyboard/ .
There are a ton of them on the market: Gmote, MyRemote, UnifiedRemote, etc.
It might be a good idea to email this developers to get a better picture of what to do.
Problem is that all of those tools rely heavily on WiFi so you'll have to understand networking.

Bingo!! Which is exactly what my instructor said. I tried out the tutorials on appInventer.. I was toying with the idea of integrating more features into those itself. Is that a good idea? Although the concept is from Google, would it be ok to build on it? i'm particularly interested in "No texting while driving" and "Broadcast Hub" -- both these apps are awesome! Are there any notable features that I can add to make them better.
How about an app for the quick oil change places. It could show your last service and what was done. Show any upcoming maintenance and when your next oil change is due.
Maybe integrate Google Maps to show locations of service centers. Maybe offer a "e-coupon" if they use the app. Pretend they offer online scheduling and maybe show them "2 customers in bay, one waiting" - Estimated wait time 20 minutes" yada, yada
As an "older" programmer with 2 degrees, it's nice to see your college offering the mobile platform as a programming choice. Hell, all we got to write were COBOL and CICS mainframe applications and some semi-cool C++ projects.
Good Luck and Congratulations on getting your degree!!
What about a bluetooth hack to where u would be able to hack into someones phone and use their service for texting and calling. I heard of something like that when i was on my blackberry and was really into it. But it would be nice to get something like that on my Incredible

I think it would be a good idea to make an app that uses an existing web api for a popular website, could be facebook, ebay(do they have an api?) etc etc.
It's a good way to learn a lot of aspects of android development, with a useful product as the outcome.
It doesn't matter if there is already an app for that site, think of a different way of using the site on the mobile, and go from there.
I would like to see a program that reads the weather API and reflects the current weather and location on the wallpaper. This app would require graphics design, code to parse the weather feed, writing to the OS. When I was on Windows Mobile there was a skin for Weather Panel that did this but with Android's live walpaper it could be really cool.
Thanks for the ideas you guys! I really appreciate it. Everything seems interesting.. but the problem is we don't know where to begin or how to go about it.
I did the broadcast hub tutorial present in the app inventer page. It turned out good. Is there any way I can add functionality to this itself?

A couple of suggestions:
- A chess PGN editor
- A simple picture/document management app where you take a photo using the camera, add some tags or other info, and save all details in a database. You can also provide search functionality and a viewer to retrieve pictures using the index you've built.

I did some homework on topics and came across this.. A multilingual speech translator.
Talk in a language, it converts the speech to text, translates that text to a target language, and reads the translated text aloud.
Is this feasible? What is the difficulty level?
Also, is it possible to develop a call blocker app? I looked around but wherever I search, I only find fully built apps but not pointers on how to go about creating one by yourself.
Please assist.
I ordered my wife a Droid X off eBay and it should be here later today. I work nights and wanted to take the phone with me and get it completely set up for her as far as contacts, apps, layout, etc. without her knowing. So my question being if I wireless tether to my Android can I temporarily bypass activation on the Droid X, get this setup for her and let her activate the phone tomorrow? Will I run into any problems doing it this way? Thanks.

four corners and *228
yes, as I understand it. When first powered and prompted to begin instead sequentially tap each of the four corners of the display starting at the top left. "End with the area slightly above the emergency button" is generally the instruction but I tapped the bottom most left corner and depressed the emergency button and the skip succeeded
I intentionally have not added a gmail account to my phone: employer issue and I would have skipped doing so on my own now that I see googe's angle. But what about calendar/contact sync, you ask? Two excellent free alternatives: funambol, and hotmail ActiveSync. yahoo actually-provides unlimited storage compared to gmail's measly 7.8 gigs. yahoo actually-provides disposable aliases very much unlike the ill understood gmail plus addressing: AddressGuard. Hotmail now offers plus addressing and hotmail provides FIVE free aliases.
To activate on network eventually dial *228 which will load an overlay to help guide you to completion
to update roaming file (prl) there are several flavors of code on which someone more versed that I might chime in
*22890
*22891
*22899
funambol builds worth using:
http://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=com.funambol.androidsync
As this is a new setup I strongly urge rooting as the 'threat' of discontinued customer "service" support is not frightening: they are entirely feckless on issues beyond helping the lazy- and cretinous.
Most of the "freeware" applications in the market are flavors of malware, mostly adware and spyware. Rooting provides adblocking (via netfilter and hosts) providing control of YOUR hardware, YOUR bandwidth, YOUR data
Install these additional actually-free apps:
LBE Privacy Guard
DroidWall
AdAway
Permissions Denied
Set DNS [choose fool dns resolvers]
not free but well worth the $3 cost
Andguard Pro
... verizon voicemail is abominable feature impaired. I recommend switching to YouMail.
... verizon crapware is tiresome. I recommend purchasing Root Explorer or Titanium Backup Pro or both
... once final versions are posted I recommend upgrading to CyanogenMod 7 for Droid X as blur stuff bogs down the phone
... the dialer is a bit simple. I recommend the lightweight "dialer one" for T9 dialing
... SMS is legacy at best. must-have: jabber (xmpp). you pay for internets already, don't pay for sms. if it is "free" (part of your package) resist using it.
http://core.im
http://chatme.im
http://jabber.rootbash.com
are excellent public jabber servers and yaxim and xabber are excellent jabber clients (apps)
... need to jot down an idea? Extensive Notes is fantastic (lightweight and feature laden)
... ditch that rinky dink calculator in the drawer. grab either/both a41CV / Droid48
... silence is golden. use Llama to control your phone by location (not gps).
... if you have a passion for tweaking invest in Tasker. If you do you have everything you need to have almost all the awesomeness of a llama. Do not buy tasker via market: buy it via paypal.
... "No Lock" might save you some frustration. power off need not equal screen lock
... for call filtering of all kinds get "Sanity" (donation version)
... since it is impossible to "use too much unlimited" install 'wireless tether' especially as you cannot use your phone data while you tether your laptop to your phone.
/data/system/throttle
is where some of the dark magic resides. interweb search for how it does/does not apply to your world
... if llama is not your bag then consider 'quick settings' for manual control
If you are any flavor of Christian then grab "Catholic One" for a lightweight bible browser. You'll need the version prior to the current version. PM me if you cannot locate it.
.. use that LED brilliantly.. grab "Light Flow" it is worth the few dollars for the non-lite version (for us). But the lite version is also actually-freeware and especially useful... MORE so than led notifications in gingerbread
And you really must install the repository browser, F-droid, from http://F-droid.org as freeware is never malware. And all adware is malware.

If you prefer YouMail to verizon's nearly useless offering consider purchasing Better Youmail Pro -- the developer(s) are awesome but not too business savvy. They will not sell outside the market If purchase is not an option by the folly of fops then upgrade from free youmail to paid youmail and use the youmail native client (as that turns off the ads... or block them... and provides more goodness).

I've got a Samsung Omnia 7 coming my way this week and it already has WinPho 7.5 on it. I own an Android phone and I won't likely be changing from that but I am very interested in what WinPho has to offer. With that said can anyone recommend some good apps and offer any tips on things that annoyed or frustrated when you first got your handset? Specifically I'm thinking of anything that might be simple on others phones but took you a while to find like a setting or some toggle option.
I'm really liking the idea of the unified messaging where you go from SMS to Facebore etc all without leaving the screen. Any other things that I should look forward to?
Thats the thing about WP, you really dont need any apps. If you have an unlocked device however, there are a few interesting apps here on xda.
Well It’s kind of hard to recommend you app's when you’re not from the Netherlands (since allot of app's that I use every day are Dutch). App's that are handy to have are the xda app, autopanorama, advanced config, windows phone device manager 1.7 (when your Omnia is unlocked), battery status and flashlight-x
Some games are really fun to play are; farm frenzy 2, OMG, rocket riot and tentacles
Welcome to WP7 Hope you enjoy using it, I personally love the Me and People hubs and like you mentioned the messaging integrated with FB chat! Put my favourite/most used/most useful apps etc. below to give you some ideas and also the more technical side if you're willing to get into that. Very easy to do and allows you more freedom for apps and hacks. You mentioned problems - the only one I have ever had which was very annoying was the in-call sound wasn't loud enough. Battery Saver is the best thing ever invented, turn it on!
Set brightness to Low rather than auto, it's bright enough and saves a ton of battery life.
In pictures+camera settings you can choose whether to take pictures by pressing the screen. I do this because it then attempts to focus on what you pressed. Also whether when the phone is locked you can launch the camera using the h/w button.
Choose a background for your picture hub by hitting the three dots at the bottom right. Can also shuffle.
If you have more than one email account, you can link them together into one tile and inbox. When you send a new msg it will ask you what account. Love this. To do it go into one of your email tiles, hit the three dots and there should be an option to link.

Oh wow.. so much for being notified about updates to this thread! Thanks for all the suggestions, if only I'd read about the Chevron unlock sooner I'd be a much happier user. Unfortunately by the time I realised how great a deal it was and how useful it would be they'd sold out of tokens. I'm hoping they will get some more in the future or I'm gonna be stuck with what MS choose to allow and that feels far too much like Apple's world for my comfort.
I've taken a look at the volume profiles, so far the only sound I'd wanted to change was the headphone volume but now that's done. I'm gonna take a look at some of the apps mentioned, already got Apict though since I loved how it was when I tried it.
I hardly use phone for anything else than game development, texting and calling.
oh, and I use "Endomondo Sports Tracker" frequently when I go hiking
I think it is the best App beside my games

I've heard of this new one, I'll need to try it
Hi guys. I've asked this on another forum but I didn't get any answer so far, so I'm asking here too. Being a new omnia 7 owner too, I think this thread is good enough.
So:
"Does anyone know how can I sync Hotmail contacts with my Omnia 7? Here's why I'm asking:
As you probably know, the contact pictures that come from syncing with Google are pixelated and look horrible. Why they didn't fix this so far is beyond me.
I've noticed that if I create a new contact, the phone asks where to "save" it, Windows Live or Google. If I select Live and then assign a picture to that contact, it has the same quality, so it's much better than Google. However, I don't want to manually create all the contacts, so I went into the account settings and unchecked the "Contacts" option in the Google "what to sync" section. The Live account doesn't have this option, only "Email" - why is that?!
To my surprise, the People section only shows 3-4 contacts after I unchecked that option! I really don't know why, because on Hotmail I have all my contacts listed, so I assumed they'll be synced with the phone.

So, what would be the best and fastest way to do this? Or some other workaround for the contact images problem...at least until Google finally fixes this mess...
Thank you. "

Hiya mate,
Sorry it's not the answer you're looking for - I have no idea!
I understand the problem. Don't know why Hotmail can't sync more than mail.
If you have some way of getting them onto Outlook that could be the way to go.
Other than that, best to ask here.
Good luck

How do I use text-to-speech (“read to me”) feature on Kindle?
Kindle can read text to you. In books and periodicals where text-to-speech is enabled (publishers may opt-out of the feature) you can start, stop and pause either by going to the text settings screen by pressing “Aa” button or by using the hotkeys: Shift-Sym to start/stop and once it’s running – spacebar to pause/resume. In the text settings screen you can also configure speech speed and switch between male and female voice. To start reading from specific location, select the location with 5-way controller and start text-to-speech.

That depends if the application calls to the VoiceSearch.apk module. Yes, it should work if the application was designed around the GV Module. Since we left everything intact, there is nothing to stop another application from calling and using the VoiceSearch.apk module. This is where people like you come in: Install it, then test applications that were design to work with Google Voice and reply back with the results.
If the application was not designed around the VoiceSearch.apk, there is little chance it will work. So, if you have a friend with an Android, ask them what applications use Google Voice. For example, I know Google Voice works with the VoiceSearch.apk module when you search in Google Voice.
Keep me posted, I will be interested in your feedback.

I believe there's confusion around what is being talked about here... This thread will help install voice enabled google search. Google Voice is a completely different product. You are correct, there can be a bit of confusion. In our How to: Install
ICS Google Applications with Google Voice Search Noob (Easy) Version
we actually use the Talk.apk which Google Voice. The problem is that we
have not found a way (yet), to pip this over to applications like Voice Chatting. Although we are
working on it and should have this functional by February 2013. Either way, this step will be
a Prerequisite in getting the entire package to work properly. Start here, give us feedback.
Speech Recognition Software
To All,
We just ported over, AVC Alice, which is used like an assistant.
We will be adding the install notes in the next 30 minutes.
great!
Great Tutorial. I've got it installed and it works great. It crashes on my KFTT when I ask it to make a note for me. It tries to attach a file and fails to find an app I think.

bbanghyung,
Wow, I am sorry. I know I responded to this Thread 8 plus hours ago but my response never made it
into the XDA Thread. Hmmmm. Anyway, you nailed it on the head! The problem when you tell AVC Alice
to "Open Note", she should respond with her intended action. Now what she wants depends on the Launcher used.
In my case, I use Go Launcher EX and HD, she detects this and knows to call up "Go Note Widget", so this
needs to be installed and setup. Just take your time, go into Settings, you will see there is a lot to AVC.
So far how do you like AVC? Fun stuff and really helpful once it has been setup.
Anyone find a way to access the voice in/out settings? I have a couple of Ivona TTS voices I'd like to try on Alice.
TTS EXTENDED looked promising, but it either forced closed or froze. There might be a trick to it. Anyone?
Alice is great. I still can't get notes to work, it just says an error has occurred. I'll take a look at it again later though. Also alarm clock plus crashes every time I attempt to access it's settings. I have moved it to my system folder and restarted and still same problem occurs.

All Alice is giving me today is "an error has occurred." And just like a woman, she won't tell me what's wrong. And I apologised and everything...
Edit- It may have been the FB reader tts (deleted) or just low memory (I deleted some deadwood), but Alice & I seem to be on speaking terms again. Still hoping someone knows a way to access the tts-picking menus. I'd love to experiment w/voices. I tried several things last night, but no joy.

BELASCO,
Yes AVIC Alice requires her space (memory) and if you do not give her space, she can become
snappy, kind of like PMS I guess. The message "an error has occurred" can be memory issues,
missing application (like if you say "Open Note", she requires Go Note), application conflict, etc.
We included this package since it is by far the best in the industry, like Dragon Naturally Speaking
is the best for a PC. I an excited to hear you are interested in experimenting with the voices. This
is exactly my goal, to improve the Kindle and spark enough interest to have others involved with
the development. Please send us responses as you work with AVC, we will be really interested
in your work. We have a few developers on site, so send me a reply with the details of your
interests with AVC and I will forward the request to my Senior Developers.
I was looking to change the KFHD's voice (and Alice's) to Ivona's Gwynneth or Amy, but found the usual Android menu lacking on the Kindle. Know of any way to get at it?

BELASCO,
When you have AVIC Alice opened, look down at the home task bar, between the < arrow and the Magnifying Glass (Search) is a
upside down U with 3 lines through it. When AVC is open, press on this upside down U with 3 lines through it and you should
see a menu pop up. Do you see the menu options - Help - Text Input - Manager - Settings?
The choices see on my KFHD are "male, female & system" in settings.

BELASCO,
Yes, of course, you have the free version which is limited in the options. It is worth it, upgrade to Pro Version
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=yourapp24.android.tools.aivc
it costs a whopping $2.36 and adds an enormous number of features and options, including everything you
want to do. Play with voices, custom responses, etc. Over 100 options added to Pro. The Basic Free
Version is meant for testing and simple development to integrate AVIC Alice into other application, then
it is meant to be upgraded. Do the Upgrade, you will love it.
I HAVE the pro version. What menu items am I missing?

BELASCO,
Go back to Google Play Store, search for AVC (Alice) Pro. Then click on the AVC (Alice) Pro Edition.
Does it show Installed? If yes, uninstall, reboot and reinstall. You are missing a lot:
Help > Help System
Text Input > Place to make Custom Voice Commands
Manager > Place to Manage Commands and Alias's to Contacts
Settings > Here you have about 80 Options inside of Settings
If you click on Settings > About us it will advise you of the Version.
Version 2.8. I did as you suggested reboot it all but it's made no difference in my menu. And it is the pro version. There are only 3 menu choices under voices.

I am sorry, I misunderstood you, I thought you were saying the only options
you had were 3. My mistake. You are fine, I am wrong. Maybe if you go
to the developer site http://www.yourapp24.com/ they
may offer other voices. You may also email them at [email protected]
