I've developed an issue in where Gmail no longer seems to sync by itself even though I have it turned on with background data enabled. Any ideas? It's getting annoying having to sync manually each time I want to check my email.

did you check the data synchronization option in settings is enabled or not?
Yes. It's checked off.

Running stock Nexus S with background data and auto-sync both checked in settings. I'm running the mail app not the gmail app and have 3 accounts setup on IMAP with 15 min sync. Weather/news widget also does not sync. I have it set to every 6 hours and when I just checked it said last update 18hr ago??
1. It does not sync in 15
2. When I manually sync each account it is way slow
3. Weather/news sync also slow
I think the phone has some confusion running wifi + 3G
Any suggestions?? Others with similar issues? I'm used to instant sync on IMAP on 2G!
not a single reply??
I don't use the mail app (Gmail app) but I've heard that not using push when using IMAP leads to the phone failing to sync and draining the battery really fast eventually. It happens when it tries to sync during one of the scheduled syncs and there's no service at the time or something, and then it goes fubar. Not sure if they've fixed this, but it was doing it on my friend's Nexus One until I changed it to push.
Anyway, is your battery noticeably bad for some strange reason? =)
I have a rooted Nook Touch with Gmail, Market, etc... Everything work fine. When I shut wifi off, sometimes it shows me "network error" and my battery seems to drain too fast. I suspect this is because Gmail tries to sync.
How could I change Gmail setting so it would sync only on demand (manual)?
In my Opinion you should use the default email app, not the gmail app. The default email app can be configured to manual sync only.
Thank you for the tip. How could I uninstall Gmail and delete all the emails?

I haven't had any issues with Gmail. Shut down wifi and force close it using the launcher. It won't reopen until you open it.
Also don't install ad free.
Ive turned off auto sync fpr exchange-email in the settings but i still get emails automatically! That doesnt seem to be applying as i still get emails automatically
What should i do?
what ROM are you using?
NexusHD2-ICS-4.0.3-CM9 V1.1
Because only in Roms >= 3.0 Email is a single sync-adapter?
But with Hyperdroid 5.6.0 Ive got the same problem. Turned off auto sync, just getting emails.
Sorry for push... But it bothers me extremely.
Nobody?
So, the frequency setting is for "never"? does it retrieve mail when you go to the inbox or while the phone is off? because i beleive everytime you go to the inbox it checks for mail.
No, the frequency is "push".
My request: if i turn auto-sync off, mails will not be pushed.
Guys, whats the problem?
Email-adapter sync is off but emails just syncing? Awful.

Just change the frequency to never and you're done.
It is virtually the same as turning of the autosync for the account.
I need "autosync off" for tasker.
If I am connected to a WLAN autosync should be "off" so I do not receive emails.
That is the reason
Recently purchased a nexus 7 for my family (kid mostly). I set myself up as a primary account and gave the kid a dummy gmail user/account. My fiancee is also using the tablet on her own gmail account.
My account lets me set Google Sync options under the normal settings menu. Their accounts are grey'd out sync icons and no check boxes to set what can and can not be sync'd. This isn't a problem for the kid really, but my fiancee wants her gmail syncing.
Any ideas what other configuration setting I need to fix?
Thanks
I figured it out. When I turned off the sync option using the power toggles widget for my kids account it also turned it off for my fiance's account. I actually had to use the widget to turn on the auto sync as the auto sync option under the settings was not available until then.

Since the update to kitkat, my S4 has been syncing and downloading email messages right around midnight (11:42 last night, 12:04 the night before, etc.) I have a pop3 email account set up (Comcast) and sync is turned on except that I have sync settings set to manual. Before kitkat, it would only retrieve email when I opened the app and actually hit the sync button. What changed in kitkat to cause it to retrieve email late at night? I've checked the settings and searched the forum. Any ideas? I could turn sync off entirely, but would have to turn it on each time I want to manually retrieve my email.

Good luck..
Thanks. I've already done that before I posted. All are set to manual sync. I will try deleting and setting up account again.

Press on gmail app from the phone and it will pop up sync email enable or disable. Uf you enable then them. Do for serveal time order it to eat. I have the same issues. Be careful with pop setup it pulling everything from the servers and transfer to ur phone without make copy to the servers, unless that is what u want.

I have the same issue, two email accounts set to manual sync that automatically pull emails once a day without me opening the program.
The only solution I've found is to turn on sync each time you want to check your email and then off again when you're done. This is a hassle and I wish there was a better solution. Something has to be triggering the event.
I'm also having this same problem.
