THIS ONLY APPLIES TO CYANOGENMOD 5.0.8-DS AND UP.
5.0.7 AND LOWER USERS NEED NOT APPLY.
For those of you who are like me and don't want the ADW Launcher that comes with CyanogenMod 5.0.8-DS, follow this nifty little guide that I've written to revert to the stock eclair launcher.
Now, before you attempt this guide, I gotta give you the standard warning... I'm not responsible for damaged devices or SD cards, always do a Nandroid backup or keep a copy of your rom on your SD card, just in case something goes wrong.
1. Do a Nandroid backup and/or keep a copy of your rom on your SD card in case something goes wrong.
2. Download the attached Launcher.apk (this is the stock Eclair launcher) file and place it in the ROOT of your SD Card and once it is finished copying, turn OFF USB Storage.
3. Enter Terminal, type su and hit enter. This gives you Super User access and allow you to complete this guide.
4. Enter mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system into terminal and hit enter. This will mount your SD card & system folder and make them readable/writeable.
5. Enter cd sdcard into terminal and hit enter. This navigates to your SD card.
6. Enter cat Launcher.apk > /system/app/ADWLauncher.apk into terminal and hit enter. This will replace your ADWLauncher.apk with your stock launcher from your SD Card.
7. Now, type reboot and hit enter. If you skip this step, your phone may lag a bit or act weird. If it does, its okay, you just need to reboot your phone and everything will be fine.
8. Enjoy!
In the end, this is what you should see in terminal:
Code:
$ su
#
# mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# cd sdcard
# cat Launcher.apk > /system/app/ADWLauncher.apk
# reboot
reboot returned
You'll still have the ADWLauncher option in your settings, seeing as I don't know how to remove that at the moment. If anyone has any input on how to do this, please clue me in.
I prefer the normal launcher taken from 5.0.7 aswell and I tried that with test3 and test4 aswell. You don't have to overwrite the ADWLauncher.apk, just keep a copy of the old launcher in e.g. /sd-ext/backup and move it to /system/app when installing a new rom. then delete the ADWLauncher file and reboot and everything is slim and fast as you wanted it to be.
You could also just install the apk file using a file manager like Linda.
It will ask you if you want to overwrite the system Launcher, confirm it and you are set.
Just install any launcher. The next time you press the Home, it'll ask which launcher you want to use. Check Always and select the one you want. Simple.

I tried installing a different launcher. Since I upgraded from CM5.0.7 to CM5.0.8, my guess is that ASTRO thought the old launcher was still installed, and wouldn't let me install a new one, so I had no choice BUT to overwrite the ADW
just curious as to why you went through all this?
imho, adw.launcher adds so much functionality. I feel like it's faster than the stock launcher. I guess if you miss pulling up your app drawer...
EDIT: NVM! didn't look at the forum. My APK was for the n1, not the g1. DELETED.

I just don't like ADW, don't want to be forced to use an aftermarket launcher when the old one was just fine with me.
The thing for me is that I much prefer the way the stock launcher performs. Its simpler and there is less lag.
Stock Launcher does everything I want it to do.
I made this into a flashable version for you, just download

then flash from recovery.
When you reboot, in the terminal enter
Code:
su
adw_remove
This should take care of the ADW settings in the menu.
If you check "use always" on the original launcher but want to go back to adw launcher, how do you get back to it? I don't see an option in settings to toggle it back on.

There's less lag with ADW (disable animations, set respons time at lowest possible). It's great, but you need some knowledge (try it).

I couldn't use anything other than it. Just because devs put so many useless icons in the menu that it gets to the point where it's just annoying.

Ok so first off sorry but its not my fault if your phone crashes or gets messed up after you do this.
This is just a little guide that worked for me and now my phone is running much smoother. This will require some very minor sacrifices.
1. Use the launcher2.apk (I guess its just me but I think its much better than the normal home performance wise.)
2. Delete the Launcher.apk, GenieWidget.apk, YouTube.apk. I usually do this via terminal emulator:
Code:
$ su
# mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# rm /system/app/Launcher.apk
# rm /data/app/GenieWidget.apk
# rm /data/app/YouTube.apk
# mount -o r,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# exit
$ exit
if there are any other apps you wish to delete then you can follow the method above where you change the apk name depending on what you want to remove.
Make sure to check where the apk's are first so you dont get frustrated or anything.
3.Go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=625477
4.Get the latest LiveWallpapers modification and push it onto the Phone. (usually the /system/app directory)
5.Get a file manager, task manager, app manager, and cache clearer (i.e What I have is: Advanced Free Task Manager, Astro File Manager, AppManager, and cachecleaner)
6. Keep perfomance up by clearing your caches and ending random processes. (Damn you processes -.-)
7. Dont overload your phone with apps, installed or otherwise. will cause SERIOUS LAGGING (unless you have a good sdcard).
Hope this helps people out.
BTW all those apps in step 5 are free in case anyone is wondering.
If anyone else has some mods they would like to post feel free to do so. Any help is welcome
I really need to find a terminal command walkthrough or ADB somewhere soon.. every single time I use these commands word for word, I get the same invalid responses.
Curses!
Lol what happened?
EDIT: if it was the mount -o rw command, I made a mistake sorry I fixed it now though
Which Eclair rom runs the smoothest for everyone? I've only played with OpenEclair and decided it wasn't ready for everyday use.
After modding it, OpenEclair. I tried kingklick's eclair but i didnt like it too much.

Complete Eclair is the fastest and most stable by a margin in my experience. Bear in mind no eclair rom (or any rom for that matter) is truly bug free.
i second Complete Eclair as the current best of the bunch.
Complete Enclair is BY FAR the smoothest enclair rom available for the G1. I am not using linux-swap or compcache and its just as fast as the official Tmobile rom on a non rooted phone. Infact when I compare it to my wife's phone which is non rooted and running 1.6 via OTA, Complete Enclair is in most instances actually quicker than her phone which has about 40 applications installed on it.
lol I dont know what you guys see in complete eclair. it starting ticking me off the second I flashed it. I am gunna pull the battery png's and put em in my OpenEclair though lol
To make openeclair fast I have done following:
1) I turn off windows animation.
2) I do not use nexus launcher.
3) I have compcache/swap disabled.
4) I do not have live wallpapers or widgets.
5) I do not have anything that leaves a background process running.
These settings work for me and my usage (Phone, Email, FeedR, Web)
Openeclair appears to run as fast as Super-D with these settings. In fact for my usage faster in FeedR performance.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. Feel free to move it.
I am wondering how to remove some things that came with CM6 when I installed it. When I go to applications > manage applications I cannot delete anything other than the things I've installed. Here is a list of things that I want to delete.
Amazon mp3
The stock browser
Stock Camera
stock messaging
stock music player
Google Talk
Google Voice
All the wallpapers
Home screen tips
I don't have a use for any of these and would rather free up the space and keep down the clutter from things I don't use.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=735255
*************** NOTE ***************
Removing some of these may cause instability/FC issues with your phone. Just fair warning.
***
After reading that thread; the files you need to delete are... (located in System/App)
com.amazon.mp3.apk
Browser.apk
Camera.apk
(Not sure about messaging - might be mms.apk)
music.apk
talk.apk
I'm not totally sure about the others.
deleting mms.apk will remove your ability to receive texts. i know cause i tried to replace it with handcent at one point. removing music and amazon should be fine.
Thanks for the replies. I'm gonna try to remove the Amazon mp3 and Music now. What do you think would happen if I move the apps to my SD card and then access and delete them from my computer? Does this run the same risk of instability issues? In theory, I should be able to back them up on my computer and restore them if things go wrong, agree?

Here's what I did along with some instructions from attn1. (he's the best!) Maybe this information will be helpful to someone. I am running CM6 A012 on my phone.
I booted up the Ubuntu LiveCD that I used to root my phone.
Rebooted my phone into Clockwork Recovery... power & volume down > wait for system check > Recovery
Once in ClockWork Recovery I linked my phone via USB to my computer and clicked 'partitions menu' then 'mount /system'
I accessed the terminal in Ubuntu and I couldn't get permissions to access the phone's files
In terminal, attn1 had me type the following commands before I could access the app list.
1) echo $PATH
2) sudo su
3) cd /opt/android-sdk-linux_86/tools
4) ./adb kill-server
5) ./adb remount
After that, to list the apps type: ./adb shell ls -l /system/app
To remove apps type: ./adb shell rm /system/app/filename.apk
To check if they're removed type: ./adb shell ls /system/app/filename.apk
I removed Music.apk, com.amazon.mp3.apk, and Browser.apk. When trying to remove Gmail.apk, Ubuntu wouldn't let me do anything else. I am assuming that the LiveCD has a time limit on it for the trial version. I then unmounted my phone on ClockWork and the rebooted it. The apps that I removed are gone from my phone and everything related to them still works fine.
Here is a link I used to find out which .apk files were safe for removal. http://forum.sdx-developers.com/android-2-1/(list)-apk's-and-odex's-safenot-safe-to-delete/
I will do some more research and try to remove other .apk files in a couple hours. I didn't try the 'move to SD' method that I mentioned above and would still like someone's opinion on it.
I forgot to mention. It's probably best to do a nandroid back up before doing all this. I didn't do one that time and will do it next time. I will also leave a list of everything I removed for future reference. If anyone else has a list, I would appreciate seeing that. This is my first time doing all this so I am constantly bugging attn1 for knowledge.
It didn't seem right to complain about AT&T bloatware, but still have to deal with the apps cyanogen installed.
Correct me if I am wrong. I did it this way and so far haven't found any issue YET. BTW, I didn't delete mms.apk though. Use Winrar (or other programs, not tested) to open cm6-liberty-A0xx-signed.zip. Navigate to system/app and then remove the apk files from there. Close winrar and install the modified cm6-liberty-Axxx-signed.zip like normal. It saves me a lot of time dealing with adb.

You know, that's a much easier idea. Even testing by taking one .apk out at a time would be faster, I think. And my Winrar is expired and it still let's remove files! I would just have to remember to save a backup on the .zip before and after removing each .apk.
Anthony1s said:
1) echo $PATH
Not required. Only had you do that because I knew shad0wf0x put the tools in the path, but didn't know exactly where. Just made it easier for moving there once you did the next step.
2) sudo su
3) cd /opt/android-sdk-linux_86/tools
Required.
4) ./adb kill-server
Not required - only had you do it because the server was initially started from the regular user account and wasn't connecting properly.
5) ./adb remount
After that, to list the apps type: ./adb shell ls -l /system/app
To remove apps type: ./adb shell rm /system/app/filename.apk
To check if they're removed type: ./adb shell ls /system/app/filename.apk
This is fine....

FYI there is no expiration on the Ubuntu LiveCD. If it stopped working for you, it was for some other reason.
Thanks for correcting that attn1. I haven't tried to do anything further yet, but will after a nap. Does anyone know if you edit the ROM in Winrar, do you have to sign it or w/e?

When I modified both of N1 and Aria CM rom, I don't have to sign it again.
Ok here is the basics of what I did. I didn't modify the CM .zip from my computer because I thought it would take more time to nandroid backup and reflash the ROM. If I install a new ROM, I am more likely to do that. I loaded the Ubuntu LiveCD and proceeded with what I was doing before. I still had to put in every command that attn1 taught me.
Here is a list of everything I removed.
- Music.apk Successful. No problems.
- com.amazon.mp3.apk Successful. No problems.
- Browser.apk Successful. No problems.
- Gmail.apk Successful. No problems.
- CMWallpapers.apk Successful. No problems.
- LiveWallpapers.apk Successful. No problems.
- MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk successful except the 'Many' live wallpaper option doesn't load without this. I didn't care cause I was getting rid of all of them.
- LiveWallpapersPicker.apk Deleting this changes some things. When you go to menu >wallpaper it takes me directly to Astro File Manager instead of the wallpaper menu. I can still access and change my wallpaper though the Gallery app
I didn't remove Camera.apk because I read somewhere that it will mess up your camera even if you have another app install. I also didn't remove any Google apps yet. I might try those any other day. They aren't bothering me right now.
I was thinking about moving my nandroid backup to my computer to save space, but I didn't. I realized that if my SD is full, I won't have space on it to move it back when I needed it.
Thanks for all the tips.

For Music, I'm using Mixzing. For Browser, I'm using Dolphin HD. For E-mail, I'm using K9. For Messaging, I'm using Handcent. For Camera, I have a bunch of different apps.
I heard that your camera and messaging won't work without the 'Camera' and 'Messaging' that are currently on the phone. I'm assuming that your email won't work without the 'Email'. I deleted Gmail without any problems though. All the rest that I removed were just Wallpapers that came on the phone. I can pull up the wallpapers that I want from gallery still.
I don't think I freed up much memory space. My main concern was to get all those 'Music' widgets off my widget list and make everything else less cluttered.
So you can still get and send email from your email account after removing gmail or do you have to buy/download another email client. I am trying to figure out the differences between the gmail and email apps at the moment. The email app seems to have changed in Froyo to something less than it was. Are you using the standard "email" app after you delete gmail app?

I think I read somewhere that Skyfire is meant to run on top of the default browser, kind of like an add-on.
For the stock browser, download cm6 and unzip it. Then go into the unzipped file >system>app>browser.apk. Just push Browser.apk to /system/app on your phone via adb and you're good to go.
EDIT: just realized you might not be running cm6. Not sure if theres a difference between the browser in cm6 and the one from the stock rom. If there is a difference you just follow the same procedure from whichever rom you're running.
Watching the same transition animations over and over is boring. You can speed them up with Spare Parts or you can just shut them off entirely within settings. There is, though, a third road: change 'em.
These are videos of most of the transition animations packs (Drod's rubiX animations, Fab's animation mix, and Android Stock have no videos at present).
Flip
YouTube - Android Screen Transitions
Bounce
YouTube - Samsung moment animations, bounce
Fold
YouTube - Sbtwca
FlyIn
YouTube - Samsung moment animations, fly in
There are two preferred ways to use these animations:
1. Add Animations Using Metamorph: should work for most roms. Thanks Haxzamatic!
Transition Animation MetaMorph Files - http://bit.ly/gwEB5F
Note: there is no current MetaMorph file for either Android Stock or Fab's mix (see below).
2. Manually Add Animations: should work for most roms
This process will be helpful for those wanting to mix and match animations from the folders. In fact, why don't you create your own mix and post it here so everyone else can appreciate your awesomeness. I'll add new mixes below if they come in.
1. Simply get ahold of the anim folder with the animations you want to use and the framework-res.apk from the rom you're interested in modifying (/system/framework/framework-res.apk).
2. Open up the framework-res.apk in 7zip (right click on it, and select "open archive").
3. Drag the anim folder with the animations (which you can download below) into /res folder in your framework-res.apk. This will replace the files currently in /res/anim.
4. Exit out of 7zip.
5. You now need to push the modified framework-res.apk onto the phone. You can do this by placing the modified framework-res.apk in the root sdcard folder, and entering the following into terminal emulator on your phone or using ADB when the sdcard is mounted:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
cp /sdcard/framework-res.apk /system/framework
mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
reboot
If you're using terminal emulator, your phone will probably reboot before you finish re-mounting and/or typing reboot.
NOTE: This is taken almost wholesale from MagnusRagnarok (initial post) and ronhova (detailed instructions) on XDA; they deserve the credit. Link To Original Post.
Since this process modifies your rom's framework-res.apk, it obviously won't work with other roms. Translation: don't take the framework you've just modified and try to put it on other roms. IF YOU DO THIS, YOU WILL DIE.
Animation Files: for manual addition
Bounce
Flip
Fly In
Fold
Drop In (from Drod's rubiX focused series)
Fly In and Flip Mix (from Fab's Apex)
Android Stock
Nice!!
But credit should really go to MagnusRagnarock. I just like it so much that I had to have it for my droid x.
Oh by the way, some of you might not get pass the second line of code. After you push the framework-res.apk back to your phone, the phone will do a soft reboot inside terminal. Applying all your changes. Don't freak out!
I recomend mixing and matching the transitions. Looks even better!
I'm using the fold transition for my lock screen and the fly transition for everything else.

I just tried flip on my D1 via metamorph, it didn't work...
Hi all - I tried it too - worst than no luck - it make my phone unusable.
1) it wrote there are no space for frameworl.apk - unfortunately original framework was deleted or changed
- then nearly all app and android does not respond
only one way is power off, but phone hangs at samsung logo. There are no samsung small blinking word and android will not start
- luckily reflash firmware with ODIN via download mode works
2) same step, but first I deleted Layar.apk from system folder to be sure I ahve enough space like author of flying animation JPF ROM at this forum.
I repeated then again copy framework with same space result and phone unusable, again flash over ODIN - I give up :-(
I tried mount as ro as at step 3rd, but it wrote busy message like someone else alraedy posted here.
- updated - I manually removed Layar.apk and Maps.apk from /system folder
then I had enough space for copy framework-res.apk
but still command mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
wrote cannot unmount, system busy
I rebooted phone normally and I am testing if framework changed or what happened
I already successfully enabled LiveWallpapers and now only framework is what I am missing from ROM with flying animation JPF ROM at this forum.
Any tips ?

Hi there;
I'm using cm7 #5 with launcherpro and i want to delete adwlauncher.
On terminal emulator typing
$ su
# mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# rm -r /system/app/ADWLauncher.apk
then write on emulator "cant remove app because folder is not empty"
What can i do?
Thanks in advanced
P.S sorry for my bad English.
Use titanium backup to uninstall or use adb, or wait for someone to make a .zip to remove it.

Here you go, flash in recovery
@Michealtbh Thanks for the zip file. Just one question. If I already have ADWLauncher EX installed, and I flash this zip file, will it remove both the ADWLauncher that came with CM7 and the EX version?? Or will it only remove the one that came with CM7?
You can always use Titanium backup to delete it...

Can you see both adw and adw ex launchers in your settings/applications/manage applications.
If you see both, then it removes adw only. And if you see only one, which means both are same. I think both will be same.
Little suggestion is donot attempt to flash that zip file without extra launcher ( like lpp) installed.

Its because of people's obsession with "free space/free internal memory".
i really like cyanogen, but i dont like a lot of the bloat that comes with it (adw launcher especially) but when i try and remove it from the .zip and put launcher2 in, sometime cwr wont install it, but sometimes it does, is there a specific method to create the .zips? ive also tried to install launcher2 through adb, but it always fails
After you install the rom remove it with titanium backup. Easy. I wouldn't muck around with zip files.
Root uninstaller works well to

Mine is in terminal/adb
I get LP installed and go into adb shell
Remount the systen
Then do rm /system/app/adwlauncher.apk
And I go on my merry way,
Can do this in terminal too
This is what I have been using. Removes adw and themes and add stock launcher.

Are you unzipping the ROM or just opening it? If you unzip it then yes, you will run into some huge issues unless you know what you're doing.
