VNC server - control android on pc - Android Software Development

Hi, my name is José Pereira and i want to share with you the alpha application i'm developing, based on http:/ / code.google.com/p/android-vnc-server/.
It has a simple GUI, so you dont need know nothing about the terminal
As now, it has support for HTC Dream, Hero and Magic (keyboard and mouse), for other devices i need you to send me the "getevent" command output so i can add the input devices names to the application.
PS: YOU NEED ROOT ACCESS
http:/ / zeluispereira.no.sapo.pt/avnc-0.01.apk (i cant post links)
picture: http:/ / zeluispereira.no.sapo.pt/asd.png
thank you

Your screenshot looks great.
This is what I get on my Nexus One (Froyo). I remember others getting the same result with VNC server in the past too. Note: also get high cpu usage.
Keep up the good work, nice and easy to use.

Could you please send me a dump of /dev/graphics/fb0 so i can look into it?
You need to have adb executable, and do something like
"adb pull /dev/graphics/fb0 filename"
and send me the "filename"
Thanks

I've been messing with the vnc server from google, but can't get the touch input to work on my sprint htc hero. I tried installing and pushing your apk, but I don't see the app on my phone.

hi,
i got the same issue,
i ve did a dump you can download it here
http://no-comp.net/android/dump-nexus-one-froyo
i hope it ll help you out.
do you think it s a client or server issue?
do you know any way to do 20 fps video recording with vnc?
thxx for your effort and your time
best regards

Uninstall your version and install market (search for vnc server), the issue is already fixed!

hi,
that s what i did, and i still get the issue, that s why i ve post you a message.
herve

I run the version
0.2c

sommething funny with the 0.3c V when i clic on "stop server" it s still running...

new screenshot with last version

Make sure you are opening droid VNC server, because i changed names when uploading to market...
nocomp i find it very odd, because i already fixed that issue... can you send me a debug from logcat?
adb logcat
Don't expect to have 20fps in vnc, you cant get it with pcs, so with phones it's even less expected.
Thanks
EDIT: this is a server issue

send me your mail adresse at nocomp (@) gmail and i ll send it to you.
thx for your time

Linwizard

FYI...
Looks like some progress has been made. I was just browsing around and curious as to whether anybody was still working on porting Linux to the Wizard. Sure enough some activity started end of last year and you can actually run a very limited version of linux from inside of wm. Here is the link, http://sourceforge.net/projects/linwizard/ I wish I had the skills to participate but I will be following their progress. Maybe I can be a help finding bugs.
cool i wish i could help in that project also but since i cant i can only volunteer my wizard as a lab rat
**double post sorry**
It's really basic at this point. no touch screen. no screen rotation. I've run it on mine. Follow the readme, expand the zip to a folder, then expand the initrd.bz2 into the same folder. copy that folder to your SD and run the .exe from inside wm.
I can't wait. I have a spare wizard and I'll definately be hacking away on that one.
hi guys!
i also tryed to get linwizard working on my htc qtek 9100 (wizard)
and really, it works! =]
i took the gizard package:
http://tinderbox.x86.dev.gentoo.org/embedded/linwizard/gizard-20080602.tar.bz2
a gentoo distri
just login in with the the user root (no password) and type the command "startx"
now the X server and the window manager starts.
also the touchscreen is working!
btw:
if you connect your ppc with your computer (usb) you can connect to the the device over telnet (not ssh - you have to set the ip on your computer first)
i'm running it with haret 0.5.1
and my config looks like this:
Code:
set MTYPE 1229
set KERNEL "zImage"
set INITRD "initrd"
set CMDLINE "root=/dev/ram0 ramdisk_size=20504 init=/linuxrc panic=30 video=omapfb:accel console=tty0"
bootlinux
all the files in the gizard package are stored in the root directory of my storage card!
greets hades00
[sorry for my english - i am from austria =)]
Well im downloading it now lets see what this sucker can do. Thanks for the heads up!
How do u know the touchscreen is working???
Hades,
i did what u said till the startx.. now i have 'Login' window with a ~$ prompt and clock like thing on the upper left hand corner. after this what ?? where are the apps? and my touchscreen does not work. i just have tht 2 windows and i cannot move them around or anything ... I am totally a noob in Linux. i had to ask my friend for even the ls command.
If u get time can u please help me out...
** I take all that back.. i had the wrong image file in the folder ... the things that does not work for me right now is
1. i cannot set the date and time
2. cannot change the theme through 'look and feel'
The mileage calculator is somthing.
as you can see, this version is just the alpha version of linwizard/gizard ... the problem is that all the software have to be compiled for the arm (omap850) processor architecture ... this can take a while, but when we have a look to the xanadux project, it works!
for example, for the gsm-modul, they took the same driver as the artemis has!
yesterday i read a little bit about the wifi-driver for the wizard, it's the TCS3500 and it's precompilerd for the mips-architecture (the openwrt project is using the same - [vlynq])
Now, it's the problem to cross-compiler the sourcecode to the arm-architecture
it's a hard work, but i think they will get it working
for me, i want to have a look to the python workaround and write some nice, small, useful programs
greets hades00
[sorry for my english - i am from austria =) - i only wite/speak broken english]
Personally, I don't think this would be worth it for me until you get the power button/power management working and GSM completely working.
But if I had a choice between windows and linux, and both would let me still have a functional phone (mustn't forget that this is the primary purpose of getting the device), you'd bet I'd go with linux in a heartbeat.
good job
i works fine on my HTC WIZARD 100, from Vodafone (VPA II compact)
Excellent work hades Wishing you all the best of luck on ur project of writing apps for this ( and waiting in anticipation to see what they are so far this is looking preety intresting)

Boot from SD?
You know, I've been thinking... I seem to remember that you can flash these things from the SD. If that's true, wouldn't that mean that somehow the device can be booted from the SD? I don't know that much about the flashing business. I do it all the time from ActiveSync, but with other peoples roms. It seems to me that if we could do that and not affect the WM OS that would kill a lot of the overhead.
Gizard
I just extracted the Gizard folder onto my SD card. I softreset the phone into WM6.1. Put my phone in flight mode. Used Task Manager 2 and killed any unnecessary apps. Then I ran haret straight from the SD. Once it boots, login with root and no password. Run "startx" and you got the linwizard desktop. Worked Great! Really wasn't slow at all. There isn't a whole lot there yet but so far so good!

Tutorial to Import SMS from Nokia phone to HTC Hero

Hi,

Ok got it to work,
okay my converter sux I got it .D if you could post more info to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4385729 your tutorial for Hero could be much more simpler...
and dont forget to give credits plx .D
best regards
I had mentioned your thread as a credit in my blog post. Maybe I will make it bold now . And I know it could be simpler. When I have time I could write a tool to insert the xml generated by Amber Nokia convertor into the SQL Lite databases directly without doing all the hacks i.e. merging a tutorial to convert NOkia->WM and then WM->Android. The WM bit isn't really necessary tbh.
Sorry I just noticed.. I forgot to include the link to your post and only included the modaco ones SOrry for that.. Done it now
iphone to htc hero???
anyone?
Almost there, but a little help needed please
Hi, have followed all the steps and got a saved copy of import.xml.
Next I connected the phone using the USB cable. (Didn't mount it as a USB device)
Then I opened Command Promt on my PC and changed to the android SDK tools directory.
Then I type "adb shell" (without quotes)
It says:
adb server is out of date. killing...
* daemon started successfully *
$
At this point the phone disconnects from HTC Sync and I have to end adb.exe (which appears twice) in windows task manager to get it to reconnect to sync.
Any suggestions please?
If it disconnects from HTC Sync, it's fine as long as you get the shell prompt

Maybe not. To be honest I'm starting to feel a bit out of my depth here. I don't really have any programming knowledge and haven't really used dos much before. I'll go and research 'rooting' now, but if you can come back with a quick instruction in the meantime that'd be great
Ok, so I've found various instruction for how to root my phone. Only problem is that they each seem to relate to what network I'm on. I was originally on T-Mobile, but paid to have it unlocked so I can use my 3 sim. Should I just use the instruction relating to T-Mobile? Sorry for so many questions, but I'm a bit worried about permanently wrecking the phone

Ok, if I use the instructions here (my ROM version is 2.73.+) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4525393&postcount=1 do you think it should be ok? I am a bit worried about the part where it says "flashrec is using an exploit that isn't patched yet in the current kernel used by HTC, however if/when HTC patches this, flashrec will stop working. So for now it's ok but a next version might have patched this, so keep this in mind !"

Run a Java applet on HD2?

Is there anyway to get the Oanda FXTrade platform to run on the HD2? The only solution I've been able to come up with is remote desktop, but that is far from optimal. This link: http // www smartphonemag com/cms/blog/9/how-do-i-run-well-known-oandacom-stocks-applet-my-pocket-pc-incl-tons-brand-new-never-publish (had to edit out the "."'s and replace them with spaces to get around the spam filter) talks about running it on WM, but the link to the .jar file is bad (and I had tried it before on my Tilt when the link did work, but never could figure out how to get it to work).
Here is link to the Java Web Start that I normally run from my PC: https //fx1 oanda com/java/beta jnlp (again "."'s replaced with spaces).
Has anyone had any luck at finding a way to run Java programs on the HD2/other WM devices? The 800x480 screen and 1GHz CPU would be perfect for mobile trading. I would be so grateful if anybody has any suggestions.
yup man..been waitin the same... pls help..
Same here, if anyone finds a solution I will be really interested to know!!
For now, I'm using Metatrader for the same purpose...
Yes, this is needed so much. I have different websites that need java applets for my hd2. Is there a solutuion today?
I think the Oanda FXTrade platform has changed since he wrote this article.
even this page: http://www.winmobiletech.com/sekalaiset/OandaComAppletInvoke.html
that he wrote to access the oanda platform is failling due to http 404 (file not found) edit: not the page itself but the page trys to request the platform.class file for the beta.jar and it returns a http connection failed to the java console.
I have looked into this quite fully.
It seems the stuff he was referring to was all beta code and has now been removed.
I have found the current jnlp file:
http://fxtrade.oanda.com/fxgui/desktop/fxtrade.jnlp
The new codebase seems like it should be:
https://fxtrade.oanda.com/fxgui/www/fxtrade
and there are now three jar files instead of one:
https://fxtrade.oanda.com/fxgui/www/fxtrade/trading-app.1.10.17.jar
https://fxtrade.oanda.com/fxgui/www/fxtrade/trading-res.1.10.17.jar
https://fxtrade.oanda.com/fxgui/www/fxtrade/protobuf-java-2.1.0.jar
I have tried to modify what he has done in the tutorial you posted to add the new information.
Unfortunately this has been unsuccessful and I am unsure where to go from here.
maybe someone who knows a bit more about jar/jnlp architecture could take it from here?
download the applet, then go to start > tools > jblend
there should be a list of applets.

Edit3:
Now grey bars at top and bottom, maybe it hangs, but hopefully it just starts slowly..
Edit4:
should it take so long??
Edit5:
yep it takes that long, desktop is build very slowly but this is still some crazy ass **** btw. enough edits for now
My desktop was created in few seconds. But I was working with some old and modified Ubuntu version.
I was working with this instructions: http://nexusonehacks.net/nexus-one-hacks/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-your-nexus-oneandroid/ on 2.2 android version.
I hope this would help you (sorry because my bad English).

I ve` tried linux installer recently and it worked. I installed debian, in my oppinion this is the easiest way, you just choose which distribution, size of the loop.img and where to install and that is it.

[SCRIPT] Change Hostname v6 08/07/2012

This will also be the last update to this script for the foreseeable future. Someone else is more than welcome to take what is here and run with it though.
08-07-2012 fixed a few typos and problems with quotes.
01-29-2012 added some variables to check for the existence of things and get correct paths.
01-06-2012 fixed hostname path.
01-02-2012 Updated to truly work on all devices.
Check it out and let me know what you think.
Big thanks to cdesai for pointing out a nice little enhancement.
This is version 5 of this script.
This script is designed to change the hostname of your device so that you can access it through your network by name instead of android_0123456789ABCEDF.
Your device will also be able to be seen at your router by the new name as well.
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
#change devName to whatever you want.
devName="changeMe"
#random variables
devHostPath=$(which hostname)
devGetPath=$(which getprop)
devSetPath=$(which setprop)
if [ "$($devGetPath net.hostname)" = "$devName" ]
then
echo "Device hostname does not need to be changed."
else
echo "Device hostname is being changed to $devName."
$devHostPath $devName
$devSetPath net.hostname $devName
if [ "$($devGetPath net.hostname)" != "$devName" ]
then
echo "Device hostname has not been changed."
else
echo "Device hostname has been successfully changed."
fi
fi
Download Hostname.sh
Download Hostname.sh to your device.
Use a text editor to change the "changeMe" in the script to whatever you want. [Keep the quotes]
Use Script Manager to run the script.
The script output will tell you if the command has completed successfully.
Once it has been run your device will be named whatever you change the "changeMe" to.
*Additionally, this script should be able to be run on any device without issues but I have only tested this on Galaxy Nexus AOKP and Droid Bionic Eclipse v3.0.

Can anyone confirm this worked for them? Doesn't seem to be working for me.
What's the output when you run it?
And when you run it a second time?
You can check at your router as well by logging into it and checking the DHCP leases.
Oh, I figured this was assumed, but you have to have root and run it as root.

Yet another idea, you can specify the host name while executing the script as an argument (quick changes )
You can use read devname and if it's empty you can get model no. From build.prop

I left it static so that it can be run at boot and will always have the same name. The model could work but it is more for changing the name to something you want rather than being dictated what it will be.
Oh and depending on your model you could have a space or other special in it.

[EDIT] Give the new version a shot and let me know how you make out.

I have many swear words for this.
There is nothing that you have done. Can you provide me with a link to the ROM you are using and I will take a closer look. Even if it's the last thing I do I will get this working.
Challenge accepted.

LG Revolution
On LG Revolution running GingerVolt 1.3, I had to change /bin/hostname to /system/xbin/hostname.
The script can be modified to determine the location of hostname command , rather than hardcoding the path.

I am working on a V5 of this which should be released within the next 2 weeks that should address almost all issues. It works as is on some devices but not all.
I have also found from my testing that setting the hostname is inconsequential and will only appear when you run the hostname command.

Thanks! This is the path on the Galaxy Nexus (ICS 4.02) and i was able to get it to update successfully.
However, if this does not update the host name that is sent to my wireless router, the point of the exercise is moot to me. But at least I learned a little bit more about my phone!
This has been posted elsewhere, but to set the name set for the Wifi DHCP request:
Code:
echo yourphonehostname > /proc/sys/kernel/hostname
Obviously, this needs root. You can stick that in a new or existing script in /etc/init.d.
No need to reboot the phone for this to take effect. Stop and start wifi to get the phone to request a new DHCP lease. Note that if your phone was already connected to a router, then the new name might not show up immediately. You'll need drop the previous name from the router dhcp client table by either waiting for the lease to expire, rebooting the router or expiring the lease manually (e.g., in Tomato Admin GUI, click on the remaining lease time under lease column in the Status -> Device List page.)
