Hi, I was looking into getting the iphone 4 but wanted to find out the best way to get my sms from my g1 to the sim or iphone. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
bleh why would you wanna do that??? I'd say your best bet is to find a phone store that has a cellbrite machine. Or don't be a zombie and just get a sick new Android device and don't give in to the hype of the sub-par iPhone 4.

AFAIK SIM cards can only hold 20 texts, that is the least of your problems though.
As of iOS 3.1.3 you can't copy texts from the SIM to the Phone. Also there are no apps that will let you edit SMS entries on the iPhone.
In shot, it isn't feasable...
64K Sims will store 50 sms', 128K will hold 100.
the cellbrite solution as mentioned already will be your BEST bet, which can be done in the store, i doubt an Apple store will have this device, so go to the phone store.
although, if that's not a possibility, and you really wanna get down and dirty... you would have to find a way to convert the sms xml file into a database file for the iphone. i've seen some sites that can convert the iphones sms database file into xml but not the other way around...
http://insend.de/
http://faked.org/isms2droid/
if the iphone is jailbroken you could go to /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS and edit the sms.db file some how and import the xml data, but that right there just seems like a big headache. you can open that file with something like SQLite which is freeware...
Just resend all the texts you have, hahaha
Use sms backup, it wl automatically backup all your texts to your gmail account.. and then get a new android phone, cause iphone 4, while it is an amazing device, it is still locked down and has limitations to wat devs can do.

I will give sms backup ago, and I will still be using my rooted g1 but I can't escape the apple lure
Well why don't you get an iPod Touch, if you seriously want the apps the iPhone has. Do you really need a phone which is overrated, forces against your will to use iTunes, has crap battery life, crap reception and absolutely locked to the hilt when it comes to writing apps for it. Not to mention if the battery goes bung, prepare to ride the shaft to get a new battery, since it can't be easily replaced. Trust me, an Android phone is more flexible. Ditto with the old WinMo 6.5 and even SymbianOS.
Mate, stick with Android and get yourself an HTC Desire, get an iPod Touch, you'll be alright. Don't believe the iHype.
Edit: realised you were from Britain, so deleted mention of AT&T. My bad.

I've had a Touch Diamond and a Touch HD for awhile and the HD is having a lot of problems, I'm pretty much tired of it and of Windows Mobile, so I wanted to try something with Android and it seems like the Hero is the best bet (I might be wrong though, are there any better Android non-keyboard phones)?
How do you guys think I'll like it, going from a Touch HD to a Hero? I've been looking on ebay and it seems like new ones are about $500 which isn't bad. And I watched a video of the Sense UI and it looks a lot better than WM. The only things that I REALLY need are the weather (which I know the Hero has), a "notes" app where you can draw, and access to Tasks and Calendar from the home screen. And a decent keyboard for texting/emailing. And an easy way to backup contacts/tasks to your computer. If you all could let me know if the Hero has these features and if you think I'd like it, I'd appreciate it.
Also, does the 3G work with AT&T in the US? Do I need to look for a specific version? (with the HD you had to get a specific model number that would work with AT&T 3G because the standard HD didn't)
PS. My main complaint about WM is it's slow and somewhat buggy (about 10% of the time when I get incoming calls, it just freezes). Android doesn't have any ridiculous bugs like this, does it?
A) Actually the Nexus One is a better keyboard-less Android phone (it's also made by HTC but all the software is handled by Google).
B) The Hero & really any Android phone will do everything you are looking for, either with stock apps or apps from the Market.
C) 3G will work if you get a Telus Hero.
So much to say... I came from an HTC Touch Diamond on Sprint to the HTC Hero on Sprint also. One day my Touch Diamond's screen simply failed to turn on anymore and I needed a new phone quick. I bought the HTC Hero as "used" from the Sprint store for like $250. It also allowed me to be "off contract" so I could switch to the Nexus on another carrier if I wanted. As you may know Sprint's CDMA and I might want to go to GSM...
I, like you, don't like WinMo anymore - too unstable. So far Andriod's a lot more stable but we'll see how that goes.
As for backing up contacts and calendaring - dude! Just switch to Google. I have all my contacts as Google Contacts now and all my calendar stuff is on Google Calendar. There is no backing up of contacts and calendering nor syncing - it's all in the cloud and all already synced together. It becomes a no brainer! (Note I use Thunderbird and hook up Thunderbird to Google Calendar and Contacts too). I also use Google Voice not and things are really good.
If I had to do it all over again though I'd drop the HTC Sense UI. The widgets and all that are sexy and pretty but you can tire of such things quickly. My biggest complaint is that HTC had totally messed up the AVRCP Bluetooth Controls by stealing them for it's HTC Music thingy and that really blows.
If you are really into HTC stuff the HTC HD2 might be a better way for you to go though that's WinMo too. There was rumor of an HTC Dragon which would be the snapdragon chip running Android. Now that I'd go to. Also the Nexus One is a snapdragon based chip.
I bet you can get an app for drawing notes, but im not too sure about the results as it has capacitive touch screen (responds to finger, not pen)
It has weather app on it and you can get more of them from the market for free
It has an easy backup as well, but loads of people can not get it to work (im one of them)

Yes, there is. The Euro Hero is (i think) the HERO100. The Telus Hero is HERO130.
What's the screen resolution?
I went ahead and bought one and I really like it so far. Android is so much faster than WM. And the smaller screen isn't really an issue, I barely even notice it. The only thing I prefer about WM is the multitasking, does anyone know if they're working on releasing a new version of Android with multitasking?
did you just ask that?

Haha thanks, I had no idea. There's so much stuff open, can you close "htc checkin service" or does that need to stay open?
From Xperia
I came from an Xperia running an optimized custom TouchFlo3D which made it essentially a TouchHD with a keyboard, and aside from the keyboard, I don't miss a single thing about the phone since switching to the hero. The hero is much smaller, things just work much nicer and it performs and looks beautiful (both UI and hardware).
I would definately recommend going to the hero and already have recommended it to several friends etc.
Nexus one shoul also be a good choice but I can't comment since I'v never used one.
All I can say is that my Hero is close to perfect and the only way it can get better for me will be when I can send files by Bluetooth in the next update (VCards in particular).

Erhhh, well, it already does multitask and has done so since the very first version.
Of course, the "future" of mobile phone OSes is no-multitasking anyway, judging by the fact that WinMo 7 doesn't have it allegedly!!!!! See here.

Dave
T-mobile version?
I also have a Diamond and am due an upgrade from T-mobile. The problem with the T-mobile Diamond was that the roms were miles behind the unbranded HTC ones.
Is the situation better with the Hero(G2) or is it best to debrand it?
Also, is the video recording still at the very low resolution it was in the original rom? I think it was 352 x 288
To be honest, whilst I think my Hero is great, there are better phones just around the corner. Of course, this is always going to be the case, but the Hero is now 6/7 months old now - if you upgrade now, I suspect you'll regret it in a couple of months time when something new pops up.

Dave

It's always better to have an unbranded rom. Does T-Mobile even have the Hero? I've only seen the CDMA one on Sprint. I bought an unlocked Telus one and it came with an unbranded rom.

Branded roms are always bad and slow. Just buy an unlocked one online or flash the T-Mobile one.
I've just traded my Hero in for a Nexus One, haven't got it yet but I'm anxiously awaiting it's arrival.
The Hero's a great little device though, and it weighs in at about £100GBP less than the Nexus. If you do get one, root it and slap one of the great custom ROM's on it though, it'll fly then. I used MoDaCo's custom ROM and it made the phone so much more stable!
Best of luck,
Just bit the bullet and ordered one. If I don't like it I can send it back within the trial period. I'm excited
Hey.. am I getting overcharged???? it seems like this app would be so simple...
Basically all the app would do is move some files onto the users SD card.
I would just need to be able to change the content/name of the app.
My buddy saiud he would do it for 300 bucks... too expensive???
$300 for custom programming work? Sounds reasonable to me. Even with a very, very simple app, it's not hard to get 3 hours tied up in design, coding, and testing. Call up Robert Half or a local consulting firm and see what their hourly rates are for custom work. The last time I worked as a consultant, the firm was billing my time at considerably over a hundred an hour.
IMHO, if your buddy writes code for a living, you should feel fortunate he's willing to do the app at all. I don't ask my friends who are professional mechanics to waste their off hours working on my car for free, and when my friends and family ask me about computer problems, I refer them to geek squad.
Did you check the market? Sounds to me like what you want is something that Astro file manager can do.
Otherwise $300 does seem fair for custom work. Did you guys talk about if it would be okay for him to sell the app on the market once it's finished?

Does anyone know if I could remove the phone and dialing apk from the phone without jacking the phone up. What would be real cool is if there was a rom that would turn my vibrant into a PMP. I also have a motorola Cliq if I could do the same with that I they wouldn't have to fight over it.

Wow that's way to smart why did't i think of that, oh wait I did I'll be taking the sim card out to put in my new phone.
When the sim card is out it allows emergency dialing only.
I’m wanting to stop the emergency dialing and the sim card missing messages if possible. I'll have to give titanium backup a try and see what freezing the apps does. I’ll try it tomorrow UPS just dropped off my new G2X.
I don't want them to have a tablet either they really want an iPod touch but I'm kind of anti iPod. I’m also thinking the new Samsung galaxy s wifi is going to be out of my price range and the specs aren’t really comparable to the vibrant.

I don't know how to stop the notifications and most of the people replying here probably don't either, so i suggest you PM a Developer here that you know and ask them to build you a flash that will remove crap like that, or if their extra nice, they might make a rom just for you to use as everything but phone.

Thanks I'll try that! Maybe I'll post the same thing on the team whisky forum.
I found on another form where people are doing this same thing just with another phone. They have a script to remove some apk's might just removimg the same apk's with root explorer and see what happens.
Ive been asking for a rom like that forever in the g1 forums...long story short...removing phone and dialer causes a **** ton of fc's, and very hard to work around. Kernal needs to be built to not have any phone functions I think...also a custom radio(again...i think). Wish I knew how to build off of AOSP cuz im thinking that would be the easiest way..

As a huge Windows Phone fan, I can't understand why ANYONE would want the 8x over the Lumia 920. But I digress...
To install apps not in the market, you have to register your device as a dev device (all 3 of my Windows Phone devices are registered and I'm able to install non-market apps).
I have several Android devices and personally, I believe Windows Phone buries it. If you were closer, I'd loan you one of mine to use for a while to see if you like it. I have converted a few to Windows Phone from iPhone 4's as well as Android devices. Only ONE person so far has switched back to the iPhone and it had a lot to do with the fact that she worked with other women who had iPhones and she felt like an outcast. Seriously.

Well, his biggest concern is that he can sideload apps. Since WP8 CAN, the correct sentence should have been that it does SOME of what he wants.
The Gmail tags are nice but between subfolders and a web client, those needs are basically met as well.

Personally, I'd have to give serious consideration to the Nokia Lumia 822 as well.
Nokia's Windows Phone support and Nokia apps are great.
Given that those are your only options though, the 8X is a great phone. The 16GB and lack of MicroSD card was the only disappointment for me with it.
I have an OLD HTC Surround (the first Windows Phone device AT&T carried) and I still prefer it to anything Android or iPhone related. Windows Phone is a VERY fast and fluid OS. The tight integration between services is pretty awesome and nobody can touch their Email/Calendar/Office apps.
I hope you can get enough time in the store to give it a thorough going through. I'd hate for you to buy it because I said it was awesome and after 3 weeks you hate it. While many people I've "helped" convert to Windows Phone are now true converts, one of their wifes is still missing her iPhone. So not everybody that jumped in feet first was happy about it.
Still ignoring his very first question?
Yes it does SOME if you're only talking about sideloading apps by paying to register a device at the moment.

Is this a question or a rant? Don't know why you would want to add contacts to sim card. You can store much more information through Google sync, and you don't risk losing all your contacts if the sim card goes bad. Its nice when I get a new android phone it syncs all of the contacts immediately and I don't have to do anything.

good for you, not for me. just cause you like something and it's preference don't mean that someone else will like it. i thought people would learn this by now. it's annoying that every topic there's a smartass pushing their own preferences on other people. just cause you like lady gaga don't mean i do. i don't care bout storing "much more information" i just want to store simple numbers and a contact name. i like being able to take my sim card and use it with most phone and have all my contacts there, without having to go through stupid process.
"and what if the sim card goes bad?"
1) very very rare occasion
2) that's why the information is on the phone too smartass
i don't want google storing my numbers, i don't want to have to sync to add simple numbers to a sim card. i don't want to add my personal numbers/contacts on the cloud. is that too much for you to understand?
anyway, there is a third party app that does this, thanks alot google! fail design.
also there's no "vibrate then ring option", are you damn serious? are you going to tell me that "vibrate then ring" is "old technology too"....don't be a dumbass.

A lot of topics are plain annoying because there's a dumb ass keep asking questions that are either plain simple or has been asked many times. Funny thing is, those dumb asses don't usually learn anything.

The point of an operating system, especially an open operating system, is that it's expected to have just the core functions to run, and people can easily add whatever they want.

Holy crap get a new phone!
Sure all these features are my preferences, but Google puts these things in place for convenience for most users. I didn't mean to come off an ass, but this is just the way that technology is going. Sim cards rarely go out, you are correct, but recently I had one go out on an old phone and so did my wife. Plus not every phone uses a Sim card, so for those individuals who decide to use Verizon or sprint, or some other CDMA service, the option of importing/exporting contacts to/from Sim card isn't available.

not everyone is programmer who can add functions to an OS. not every programmer is going to waste time programming functions that should have been included as a basic feature that is included in most phones. you see the point? google only implemented this so they have can more people using their services = more $$. that's all. they could have easily added this. this is amongst the least of simple functions they failed to included but it's the basic of most other smartphones OS.
anway, your consensus is equivalent to nothing in the real world since you're nobody. . i didn't know this forum had so many trolls, worse than youtube. anyway, have fun acting like a smartass and putting people down on forums LOL. it says alot about your personality in real life.
can't argue with a dumbass and can't ever win an argument on the internet, thus i won't even try. have a great day sir. have fun flaming me for making an honest post. trolls will troll...

This will do vibrate then ring for you. I tested it and seems to work fine.
Call me old-fashioned but for me Android is an OS for tech enthusiasts who delight in tinkering with their devices to do things that the manufacturers didn't implement rather than people who must complain at every opportunity because what they wanted wasn't served up on a silver plate. If you want an OS that babies to your every need them maybe Android is really not for you.

simple functions like a volume control in the music player and add sim to contact, both of which are ubiquitous their music players and phones, respectively, is "babying"???? simple functions like that should the basic. if they can't even add those, that says alot of their design when you have to rely on third party apps to get it done. as for the ring and vibrate. anyway, i downloaded audacity and i edited the ringtone to have a delay in the intro. no need for more battery draining third party apps. i have to waste time to even get a simple function like that. Yes android is about people tinkering with the OS and having fun with it, NOT about people have to waste time to get simple functions to work.
anyway, i'm done with this thread. delete it if you wish.
Simple functions but not ones most people actually use. Google didn't implement them because they are not popular features but the OS is flexible enough that people can actually make them work if they want. If that's too much work for you then, well, good luck.

if your worried about your information being in the cloud then you should be using a dumb phone.
All smart phones will import and use google contacts. It works great and I never loose them. You can look them up via your email if someone steals your phone.
BTW> THIS IS THE WRONG PHONE FOR YOU.
You do realize you can just turn off contact sync in Google, under the Accounts in Settings, right? I hate to break it to you, but I don't think Android is for you.

Tried and Tested Method Save New contacts to SIM / RUIM card
Well friends, there is a need to put some private entries on SIM. Let me explain.
My wife and me are both professionals working with the same set of professional contacts. Hence I use My Phone Explorer to sync our Phonebook, Notes, Tasks and Calender to be identical and concurrent.
To keep my personal contacts / friends (and hers for that matter) out of the Sync list we would prefer to leave them on my SIM and her RUIM (CDMA) card.
Here is how you do it.
Open "People".
Select "Menu" and then "View"
Keep only "Sim" ticked and untick everything else.
Go back to "People" and you shall only see SIM contacts.
Select Add and fill in the details and you are done.
This is how I do it for my old HTC Salsa Android 2.3.1 and Galaxy Y CDMA. (Menus differ slightly between manufacturers)
Others may need a slightly different method
