I've started experiencing some problems when trying to make a call. Whenever I call someone, my phone turns off and locks, and I'm not able to turn the phone back on and the soft keys won't light up for 30 seconds or so. It's almost as if the phone turns completely off, but it's still making the call. This is only if I make a call. If someone calls me, the phone turns the screen off and on by itself no matter where I position the phone. It just flashes on and off.
I've been running jt's super clean v0.4 and the 11/02 kernel, and I had been running them for a few days before this started happening. I even flashed back to stock and nothing changed so I've flashed back to jt's rom and kernel.
Any help or suggestions or anything would be helpful. Thanks.
And I bet after a boot first couple of calls might be fine? Sounds like you may be using a task killer.
Put
com.samsung.phoneinfo and Call settings
in the ignore list.
good day.
Nope, uninstalled ATK and still the same problem. And the first call after a reboot still had the same problem.
Also, the only way it unlocks itself is if the other person hangs up.

Mine does that too.
It often blanks when I look at it, and stays on when I put the phone to my ear.
In my case the phone isn't actually turning off. It's as if the proximity sensor often doesn't work right.
The proximity sensor is that thing next to the speaker on top. It turns the display and touch screen off so that you don't press the buttons with your ear, and so that the phone doesn't feel too warm on your ear.
I highly suspect that the hardware is fine, but the phone isn't task switching fast enough when the hardware raises an interrupt.
This is the only time that lag bothers me.
This became less bothersome to me when I realised that the phone wasn't actually broken.
I also do not use task killers, because this ain't Windows.

So we now have new causes for an old problem. Sorry I couldn't help.

Same here my proximity sensor just locks me out, i am trying to use the keypad and i have to unlock it over and over again. I restored my lock screen to original and it did not do it with a test call. But ill have to keep an eye on it. My biggest issue is the 3g connection dropping to 1x when i hit the web.
It was my screen protector. I guess it covered the sensor enough to block it. Hmm.

My screen sensor doesn't actually cover it, but I am easier able to live with it since I know what's happening.
On streak - At times it becomes frustrating to pick up calls with the sliding unlock option - is it possible when an incoming call comes in - I can map one of the hardware buttons to use to pick up the call rather than sliding?
I find the sliding option at times just stick's and by the time I manage to slide the call is gone! and I end up with a missed call in my hands...
I am on 1.5.3 and looking for an alternative way to pick up calls.
Pls advise
If the screen is locked yes u can download screen suite but it will change it lockscreen and unwilling need no lock (that's the name of the app).

I have been having major problems with the slide to unlock on my streak. Sticky unlock have been a problem since i got the streak but it has become worst lately. Specially if i take it out of my trouser pocket, the screen just won't unlock

wow...good find. I had the same problem with the sticky slider when answering calls.

Did you try and recalibrate your screen (search inthe forum for the procedure). It helped me with unwilling touchscreen
My touch screen is non responsive only if I have the screen against my leg in the pocket. If it faces outward then I have no problems

Right I have now had this issue several times and it has become a big problem. I put the phone in my pocket, get a call/message/text/ which turns the screen on, and somehow the touch screen buttons keep getting pressed. So far I have lost all my paid for credits in a game when I paused it and put it in my pocket to get off a train, had it start skipping tracks when listening to music when a message arrived and it started pressing the lockscreen music buttons while in my pocket....twice.
I never EVER had anything like this with the S3 that it replaced. Somehow the screen is obviously being pressed by my leg THROUGH my trousers and activating the buttons on the touchscreen whenever the screen is on. Obviously this may have serious consequences if it starts calling contacts or even emergency numbers while in my pocket.
I am looking for a way to reduce the sensitivity so it doesnt do this but so far all I can find in the settings is a single tickbox to INCREASE the sensitivity so you can use it with gloves on (which suggests to me it must also be possible to reduce it).
Yup

You may have a faulty handset as I don't have these problems on mine.

I doubt it. Friend has one as well, does exactly the same, rub phone on chest to clean it and it is pressing buttons/icons etc on the touchscreen if the screen is on.
Did you turn out that thing in settings that makes the screen more sensitive so that you can use it with gloves on?
There's the air wakeup setting too

I've owned the S2, S3, S4 and never had this problem. Now I have a G900F. The S5 screen is ridiculously sensitive and I have the exact same problem as the OP.
Try to add a pattern lock screen, it should prevent the phone from launching anything even if the screen wakes up.
Yeah I've been having the same problems I switched the touch sensitivity toggle off and it's been ok

It' on pattern lock. That doesnt stop notifications coming up for anyone that has it set up like that, and it doesnt stop it pressing the emergency calls button!
Air View is off, Increase Touch Sensitivity is off (as already mentioned). Infact I tried the Increase Touch Sensitivity option to see what effect it has and I can't see any difference to it with it turned on, it is just as sensitive, I can literally put my finger inside my shirt and move the screen around and I can do this just as well with the touch sensitivity on or off. Perhaps there is a bug which is causing the increased touch sensitivity to be on ALL the time even when the box is not ticked. Seems to be a problem many are having anyway.

Not had any problems whilst in my pocket, but I tried using the screen through my T-SHIRT and it does the same thing for me with touch sensitivity off or on. Just tried with gloves though and it doesn't work unless you switch touch sensitivity on, so it does make some kind of difference to the screen.

In that case ewokuk, 2 solutions, since your phone is brand new, maybe you should take it back to your store and get another unit.
Or wait for maybe a fix with next firmware update.. which may happen anytime. For helping you, you could get a protection / front cover for your phone
I registered just to post here. This has been driving me absolutely nuts. Every time I have a call when in the car and the phone is in my pocket (talking through bluetooth), if my leg so much as twitches I end up muting myself or hanging up. I went from an S3 to the S5. If I get a text while walking and I have music playing or something, any and every button available will be pressed. I have had random gibberish created on my calendar while walking (screen lock hadn't activated yet because I had just put it in my pocket).
ewokuk, any word on what you did? I have played around with as many settings as I can but nothing seems to do the trick. It's a nice phone, but unfortunately this one thing drives me up a wall
The screens can still be used through simple fabrics .. it can be done so since the S2. If the screen is in the pocket facing down (against your thigh) it still can be triggered. I can only suggest to put the screen facing outwards or well not against your skin or body

The difference in sensitivity between the S3 and S5 is pretty astounding though. Yes, I could use the S3 through a shirt if needed, but I never had it hang up phone calls constantly and go through all my apps randomly.
I think the proximity sensor is just not the greatest as it doesn't detect that it's in a pocket. Again, no real idea, but that is my guess.
Same problems here. Phone pocket dials people, replies to texts. Pattern lock helped..but I prefer not using it. Maybe it's because the phone wakes with text messages received. Annoying as heck

I'm glad I'm not the only one because I really did think it was just me. All of the issues listed in this thread happen to me all the time. Tracks skip, the phone hangs up.. I even find my typing is less accurate unless I really slow myself down (it seems prone to picking up extra key presses although this might just be mel. I did not have these issues with my s3.

s series sensitivity
I have had that problem with the s3 s4 and now s5 i just put my phone in my pocket with the screen facing out that way my leg cant activate it and my pants doesnt press the unlock button when i move.
Ditto, never so bad as this phone, I put it in my pocket now screen out, and put my wallet over the screen so I don't accidentally crack it.
Often in games when I am "hovering" over the screen it will trigger the action anyway. I've tested this to nearly 1 full cm away from the screen. If I hover on the same spot for 2+ seconds at ~1cm it initiates a touch at that point.
I also did not notice a difference switching increased sensitivity on or off.
Rarely, but sometimes during calls the screen turns on briefly when I pull the phone away as it starts making my face sweat, it will the "hover" hang up or mute, or launch some app (often one that has force screen on permissions) and send people gibberish email or text messages, set alarms or calendar events. I even had it start a conference call, adding an old boss to my conversation (I keep the number handy for references) once.
I have used the finger print lock since the first time I turned the phone on. Most annoying is the sensorly app, only works with the screen on even when running in the background...
I have also had to modify my typing to accommodate this sensitivity, I have to tap slightly above and right of the keys to make sure I hit the right ones.
Is it just me or is the Doble tap 2 wake too sensitive? I mean when I pick the phone up of my pocket the screen is on and 100 apps are open and some times it calls people up while it is in my pocket... I didn't have this issue on the z3 and the z2???
I don't have this problem. Are you putting the phone in your pocket with the screen still awake?
I have the same problem with my Z5. I've had to turn the feature off for this reason. It never caused any issues with my Z3.
Sent from my E6653 using XDA Free mobile app
thought i was the only one lol, yea its too sensitive. Just picking it out from my pocket the screen is already on >.> didn't have this issue on the Z3. but then again, z3 requires more tries to Double Tap 2 Wake in compared to Z5. Ups and downs on either end.
i can confirm this. it starts happening with my Z3+ (Z4).
I disabled it on my Z5. it makes sense as the power button easy to turn on & unlock right away with fingerprint.
Its the opposite for me - a few minutes back I was pretty much playing the piano on it and it wasn't coming on!
Had to use the power button to wake it.
Put it back into standby with the power button, tried DT2W again a few mins later and it worked first time.
we referring when device in pants pocket. even worst if i put in my shirt pocket. my nip would trigger the screen on & dialing some weird random numbers.
hmm this could be why im getting a battery drain in my pocket. and sometimes the screen is on when i take the phone out of myu pocket
Too sensitive for me as well. Does crazy things in the pocket
same for me. have the problem. will have weird numbers on the dialer as well, a whole new meaning to butt dial.
Same for me (on my z3) but you could use fingerprint since it is a cooler way to unlock your z5 just press and hold for a second and you're ready to go

Hi, anyone have issues with galaxy s8 when making/receiving calls ? My S8 was pre-ordered and on the first day of usage im faced with this issue, when making call or receiving phone randomly lights on display (once) and genlty randomly vibrates (as you press home button or nav button), then im take away phone from ear and put it back to ear display turns off, sometimes it keep turned off as normaly but sometimes it lights on again and vibrates, so i have to do previous steps or if ignore that issue than display turns off after some time and when im take away phone from ear to end call phone is locked and display won't light up until press lock button. Also im noticed that when im lock phone or even take it in hand (fingers touches both curved sides of display) phone also gently vibrates and turns from AOD to lock screen, this issue is also randomly. Some times AOD screen suddenly goes bright and than fades like it should be. After two weeks of chatting with samsung and store support im was send it to "service", they tested phone and after 10 days im received phone with status "no problems detected, software reflashed" but issues still not gone. And im can't replace it with new one because store refuses to replace it and says that they don't replace devices with software issues. Now im stuck and don't know what to do.
P.S. in *#0*# menu proximity sensor ADC values randomly keep changing even if nothing is in front of sensor, values are between 79-125 and when completely put finger on sensor values is 16368
Same issue here. Not sure why.
same for me too, international dual sim version s8
I have little bit different issue related to light sensor. My phone doesn't turn off the screen and locks in a pocket or if I close light screen by hands.

I have the same issue (also the oversensitive home button issue too).
I have a similar issue. But my screen never lights up. Neither during a call or when on the desk, for example. But during calls it sometimes vibrates as if I hard pressed the home button even though the screen is still off and I haven't pressed anything with my face, nor have I received any notifications. It doesn't seem to happen once every minute either (some phones notify you of every passing mine during a call).
It's not a big deal for me, just kind of curiously annoying.

Check in settings on ambient display, pocket mode, etc. Or maybe a cache wipe and reboot will solve.
Like Settings-Display-Screen Mode
-Keep screen turned on/off
Thanks to Samsung and Consumer Rights Protection Centre, together we forced store to replace phone. It was a factory deffect, so anyone who has similar problem im advice to replace phone.
