wiped my htc shift hard drive, now what - Shift General

I tried numerous times to install win7 HP on the shift... at times it did not recognize my dvd drive, powered or not, I ended up formatting the hard drive and now I don't have a bootmgr to help install vista back.
Are there any updated streams on putting win 7 on the shift.
Why does the drive show and not show... keeps asking me to install a cd/dvd driver...
Now, of course, nothing on the hard drive and I cannot find the rescue partition to rebott vista... I'd much prefer getting win 7 on the shift...
I even tried using a usb drive...
DougB

Vista rescue partition is hidden, thats why you didn't find it from HD, but you can access it by pressing Fn+F9 while booting.
Or you can install Windows 7 from USB-key:
To creat bootable Win7 install USB-key/USB-drive:
1. Copy all files from Windows 7-DVD (or ISO-file) to C:\WINDOWS7\
2. Open command prompt in administrator mode (start - all programs - accessories - command prompt - right click - run as administrator)
3. Plug in USB-disc or USB-stick (must be at least 4GB) and type these commands:
- type CD\
- type DISKPART
- type LIST DISK
- type SELECT DISK X (where X is the memory stick disk number you got from LIST DISK)
- type CLEAN (CAUTION; THIS WILL ERASE ALL THE CONTENTS OF THE SELECTED DISK)
- type CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
- type SELECT PARTITION 1
- type ACTIVE
- type FORMAT FS=FAT32 QUICK
- type ASSIGN
- type EXIT
- type XCOPY C:\WINDOWS7\*.* /S /E /F E:\ (E:\ is the name of usb stick, if your key has an other letter, of course put your) (after *.* and after each letter preceded by / there's a space!)
Reboot, at startup push FN+F10, choose your usb key and install Windows7.
This will not affect your HTC SHIFT Vista recovery partition.

I'm using Vista sadly if that makes any difference ?
HI! I understand you reading this part:
Section 3: Running ADB from Command Prompt
Running Command Prompt:
Windows XP: Select Start or Tap the Windows Key on your Keyboard, select "Run" and type "CMD" then hit "Enter".
Windows Vista/Win7: Select Start or Tap the Windows Key on your Keyboard, select the search box on the left and type "cmd" then hit "Enter".
- Also, Mikey1022 has reminded me to add the "ADB" directory path as a system variable in windows...
To do this right-click on "My Computer" and select Properties. Next select the Advanced tab(Advanced Settings in Vista) then select Environment Variables.
Click "New" under System Variables and add the following:
Variable: adb
Value: C:\android-sdk-windows-x.x_rx\tools "x = version you are using"
The Value is WRONG!!! It has changed. It should be C:\android-sdk-windows-x.x_rx\platform-tools\

I installed Honeycomb onto my sd card following instructions to the tee. I also unzipped the android sdk files onto the sd card as well. Now when it comes to opening a command prompt in that folder I am completely stupid. I go to My computer and the sd card shows up under the F: drive. How do I open a command prompt for my F drive (ie.. what do I type?)? I know it's a stupid question, but I really don't know how to do it.
Not sure why you need a command prompt on that file, but in your computer, you can go to start -> run -> then type "command" (without the quotes) to get a command prompt
Which instructions? If you're using windoze, you shoulda downloaded some files to a windoze folder, not the sd card if I remember correctly. To open a command prompt in the open windoze folder use shift-right click and select "open command window here".

Thank you for the shift-right click. Still learning something new every day.

Setting default install path in android

This post is to help you set your phones default install path to your phones sd card on any android device.
so here we go..............>>
1. First you have to enable USB debugging on your Android device from Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging.
Now you need to download and install the Android SDK on your computer from google....please google it.
Once setup is downloaded and installed you click on Available Packages to the left.
should you get any error message at this point, enable “Force (url) in the Settings then from the list of available packages, select “Usb Driver package”, click on the Install Selected button in the bottom right corner and follow the prompts.
2. Connect your phone to your computer with a USB-cable. Your OS will prompt you to install new drivers.
Choose to install them from
C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver folder
when you are asked to install drivers
(If for some reason you are not asked to install drivers as it happens sometimes in windows 7. Go to device manager and look for your phone under the usb device list..............right click and choose update drivers....navigate to C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver folder" to update) If you do not know how to update then google it.
NOTE: You need not mount your device; you only need to plug-in the cable.
3. Next, run a command prompt and navigate to the Android-SDK/platform-tools folder. In Windows, this is done by selecting Run from the Start Menu (or by pressing Win+R) and typing cmd. You change drives in the command prompt by entering the drive letter followed by a colon ), and change folders with the CD command. For example, to enter the Android-SDK folder, simply type C: cd android-sdk.
4. Whiles in the Android-SDK/platform-tools folder, type in
adb devices
you should get a serial number starting with “H” in return. All you have to do next is enter
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2
You’re done! Android will now install apps to the SD card by default.
To switch back to storing software on the internal memory,
enter
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 0
With everything done correctly you should not have that "annoying memory getting full" message anymore.
If you have a terminal application installed on your phone you can use also that for entering the commands and you should notice, too, that it works only with 2.x roms.
Sent from my Gingerbread on Dream using XDA App
Or you could use a utility:

But how do you specify a specific directory?
Getting Error
I am getting error "/data/anr/traces.txt: Permission denied" when I give Command "adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2"
Please Help.....
On some updated SDK version its "set-install-location"
Hi,
I've done this and it worked. however I changed my sd card from 2Gb to 4Gb and now it will not work anymore.
I've redone the steps above and, got confirmation that [external] memory is being used, however when I want to install a new app I get the same error message "not enough space"

[Q] help

i have a mz601 xoom - european.
i played to much with it and now it stoped recognizinig the sdcard
i have tried all without luck.
can anybody help me with that?
i noticed the error mesaage everytime i power on the xoom with sd card inside:
"android.process.media stoped"\
maybe i ereased the folder?
You say you played too much with it...what did you do exactly? Without more information, we can't help you.
please help
i tried to install ubuntu, and that was the read me file:
what is this?
An ubuntu 10.10 maverick (with LXDE window manager) machine in your pocket. Perfectly usable from the phone itself using a VNC client, this allows you to install any ubuntu software onto your phone and have it with you always. Coupled with the (potential) ability for your phone to be hooked up to a television with TV Out (works with the Nokia TV Out cable available on eBay), and for (supposedly any) HID-compliant bluetooth keyboard and mouse to be linked up to the phone (requires Android 2.2), this really does become a PC in your pocket.
Requirements:
- android phone
- superuser + busybox
Included:
- 3.5GB virtual machine image (ubuntu.img) with ubuntu and certain applications pre-installed (listed below). The image is resizable with uec-resize-image, although FAT32 (the most likely format of your SD Card) has a maximum file size of <4GB.
- A script to boot into ubuntu from android (ubuntu.sh)
- A script to start the VNC Server and other startup commands. This is contained within the ubuntu.img file at /root/init.sh, accessible and modifiable once ubuntu.img has successfully booted.
How to boot:
- Place ubuntu.sh and ubuntu.img in the same directory in your SD storage.
- Enter a terminal and enter 'su' to become a superuser (root).
- Navigate to the directory where you placed the files (e.g. "cd /sdcard/external_sd/ubuntu").
- Execute the script by typing "sh ubuntu.sh".
Tip: Some android terminal emulators (e.g. better terminal) allow you to specify an initial command that is run as soon as you launch the application. Multiple initial commands can be defined by pressing return between each command when you define it, so for example the initial command:
su <return>
cd /sdcard/external_sd/ubuntu <return>
sh ubuntu.sh <return>
after a hour without respons i rebooted the device, and the hole system was down. i got stock with the logo. so i formatted the hole directories via cwm and isntalled stock rom upgraded to 3.2 and it gave me the error i wrote earlier every time i had a sdcard inside.
so i downgraded (via fresh install) to 3/1 and somehow succeeded to instal timat 3.2 but with the same sdcard problem.
cmw does not recognie the sd card also. can it be that i have to creat a directory or something like that?
please help
Your problem is beyond the scope of my understanding. I know someone can probably help you, but I've never seen that exact issue before.
Good luck!

[Guide]Data Recovery -Internal [Note 2 or Any Android]

Hello here is a guide to Recover Deleted files from internal memory From Any android Phone
You Need
1.Rooted Android phone ( In my case i used Note 2 N7105 )
2.Install busybox ( Note : Install in /system/bin NOT at system/xbin )
3.Drivers Installed on your computer
4.Download The Recovery Tool.rar [ https://www.box.com/s/zw0sfprtlx4dqysd018o ]
5. Download Recuva [ http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download ]. This is the Software going to recover your file , or you can use your favourite Data recovery software . But i suggest Recuva
Steps :
1. Take your rooted phone . Go to Setting->Devoloper Option -> Tick on Stay awake and USB debugging
2.Connect your Phone to the Computer , Let the driver Install .
3.Extract Recovery Tool.rar to c:/ ( You will Find two folder AB and Cygwin )
4.Click Start -> Run ,
Type " CMD " Press Enter
5.Dos Window will open up Now Type " cd c:\ab\ " Press Enter
6. Type " adb devices " Press Enter
** Make sure it returning out Some numbers (IMEI) under list of devices
7.Type " adb Shell mount " Press Enter
Now this is something important , After the command adb shell mount it will give a long List you need to fine "dev/block/mmcblkop"xx" /data(or user data "
Note : The xx can be any number
In N7105 its " mmcblk0p16 " is data Partition .
The last two number (xx) will change from mobile to mobile . Just note the partition name . In my case its " mmcblk0p16 "
8.Close the CMD window . Go to My Computer->C:/->Cygwin->Open Cygwin Terminal
9.Type " export PATH="/cygdrive/c/ab":$PATH " Press Enter
10.Type " adb forward tcp:5555 tcp:5555 " Press Enter
11.Type " adb shell " Press Enter
12.Type " su " Press Enter

18.Type " cd /aa " Press Enter
19.Type " nc 127.0.0.1 5555 | pv -i 0.5 > mmcblk0p16.raw " Press Enter
20. Now let it Run this will take long time for me it took me One hour to complete
21.After it Compltes Click start->Run Type " cmd " Press Enter
22. Type " cd c:\cygwin\aa\ " Press Enter
23.Type " VhdTool.exe /convert mmcblk0p16.raw " Press Enter
24.Now Close Everything .. Right Click My Comuter->Manage
25.Now Select Storage-->Disk Management.
26.In the menu select Action-->Attach VHD.
27.For Location enter " c:\cygwin\aa\mmcblk0p16.raw " and select the OK button.
28.Right-click on the name (e.g. "Disk 1") to the left of the Unallocated space and select Initialize Disk.
29.Select the GPT (GUID Partition Table) radio button and select the OK button.
30.Right-click on the Unallocated space and select New Simple Volume...
31.In the Wizard select Next>, leave the default for the volume size, select Next>, select a drive letter (e.g. K), select Next>, MAKE SURE to select
the 'Do not format this volume' radio button, select Next>, select Finish.
32.A box will pop up asking you to format the drive. You DO NOT want to format the drive at this time.
33.Right-click on the RAW space and select Format... MAKE SURE to change the File system to FAT32. Set the Allocation unit size dropdown to 'Default.' MAKE SURE that the Perform a quick format checkbox is CHECKED. You do not want to overwrite the entire new drive with all zeroes (0's) and destroy your data. Quick Format means that it will only attempt to destroy the index for the drive by establishing a new index. Without this box checked the Windows operating system will write zeroes (0's) across the entire volume, potentially destroying your data. Select the OK button.
34.A box will pop up saying that Formatting this volume will erase all data on it. That would be doubly true if you actually didn't check the 'Perform a quick format' checkbox. Double check that you actually did check the box and select the OK button.
35.Open the Piriform Recuva application. In the wizard select the 'Next >' button. Select the 'Other' radio button and select Next >. Select the 'In a specific location' radio button and enter: k:\ (assuming K is the drive letter you chose...) Select the Next > button. Select the Enable Deep Scan checkbox.
36.The application may take about an hour to do the 'Deep Scan.'
37.Once the application has returned its results you can choose which files to recover using the checkboxes. Select the 'Recover...' button and choose the location to which you wish to output your files.

If you have used external SD Card as the location for saving raw image, this guide would have been less scary
Good guide though :good:
Thanks but since Jelly Bean I have resigned myself to the fact that there is no practical way to recover data from the internal storage (the lack of a recycle bin is one of the very few Android's big flaws) so I keep my data on the 64GB external one. I reserve the internal storage only for whatsapp and viber photo and video, Navigon maps (the whole European set), apps and the few other things which are always kept there (like SMS messages, e-mails, Dropbox offline files etc etc) . Doing so I have less than 3GB free on the internal memory so I would be keeping my data on the external SD card anyway...
Now this is something important , After the command adb shell mount it will give a long List you need to fine "dev/block/mmcblkop"xx" /data(or user data "
Note : The xx can be any number

Data Recovery from a Locked Samsung Note Tablet.
Does the procedure posted by Capt.Nizam work for the tablet with forgotten password? Since it has a password on, the device will not mount on a PC or Mac. And because of Samsung encryption recovery through regular means might not be an option. How can I by pass the password and get into the flash chip to recover the data.
I posted the following on a forum with no response; does anyone have a better solution?
For the past few days I have surfed the web looking for a solution to recover my data from the Samsung Tablet 10.1 Note. I forgot the password I had and cannot loose the data by doing a hard reset/factory reset. There has to be a way to get back into the flash chip and recover data; even if it means physically opening up the tablet and removing the motherboard.
Since the password encrypts the data, the tablet shows up on a pc or mac when connected with a USB cable but shows no data.
Please, is there anyone who knows a way around?
Thank you in advance.

Hi, [email protected], you can try Android Data Recovery. It is a powerful and useful recovery software originally developed to retrieve lost data from Android SD card. All lost data or deleted files, including photos, songs, videos and other data files can be restored as you want.
