Launcher pro questions... - Desire Themes and Apps

I see several screenshots posted here from people who use Launcher pro.
I do like those screenshots and there are some handy things about it what i like.
However.... I am a bit afraid to mess up my Desire. So i have a couple of questions....
1. If I install this app Can I switch easily between Sense & launcher Pro
2. How can i Switch
3. The most important Widget from sense is the contacts Widget, is there a widget that can replace this functionality ?
4. I also the mail widgets from Sense is there a replacement for those ?
I hav a stock rom with the latest Update. I don't want to root or dos something like that. Can I have a go with LauncherPro ?

If your in bed with sense why not stay there for now and see what happens on the 23rd when we get FroYo?

Yes, you can use an app on the market called Home Switcher.

There are widgets out there... give Executive Assistant a spin
Why not just install it and see what you think... you might like it and ditch the sense stuff... which imo isn't that great!

Yes, switching is easy! You can either go through the "Manage Applications" menu (Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications), select your current launcher and tap "Clear Defaults", or go to marketplace and download "Home Switcher" which makes life really easy if you're indecisive. ;P
You're also asked which launcher to use the first time you tap the Home button when one is installed or removed. You have to tap the checkbox at the bottom to set one as the default, so one of the easiest way to try it out is to leave it unchecked, then you get prompted each time, once you've made your choice, you can just tap the checkbox.
I'm not sure about specific replacements for those widgets, but in general there are solutions. You can add contacts to your homescreen directly the same way you add widgets (Hold a blank area -> Select "Shortcut" -> "Person").

Modifying Default App Shortcuts in launcher

I'm really curious to know how I can change the default 4 app shortcuts in the launcher.
The ones I'm talking about is the Phone, Messaging, Contacts, etc
I have my phone rooted, the works.
For the life of me I've played with the phone all weekend and looked online and can't seem to find a damn thing.
Thanks for any help you good folks can provide, and I look forward to some fantastic ROMS from the community!
Push applications button > menu > select customizable grid
Push menu > edit
You can drag icons from the app drawer to the bottom, but you can only change 2 of the 4.
best way IMO is to use a different launcher
launcher pro and ADWL Launcher are both excellent and worth a try.

How to Change Primary Shortcuts?

Just curious if anyone knows how to change the primary shortcuts listed across the bottom of the screen? I dont like samsungs stock messaging, want to put handcent there instead. Also want to change the rest of them, except applications lol.

You cannot change the app dock in EPIC. Hopefully that feature will be added in the upcoming updates of GPS and Froyo.
As of now EPIC can't change apps on the dock. Cannot remove/add homescreens. Has basic music player and no eqaulizer as found in captivate and vibrant.

Does this not work?
Only thing I can suggest is ADW launcher or Launcher Pro (I use this). You can have handcent in the dock (I have it there).
Also, thank goodness the Epic 4G still has the Samsung Video player which looks so sweet! It also has the 5.1 surround sound button too

The instructions on the page kramboid linked worked perfectly for me on an unmodified unrooted Fascinate.

Thats because the Fascinate runs TW 3.0....the epic runs 2.5 due to landscape issues in 3.0 and you cannot change the apps in the dock on 2.5. I would definitely suggest ADW or Launcher pro, TW works great but it isn't customizable like adw or launcher pro and both work amazing as well

I was able to change my "Messaging" to Handcent by doing the following:
1) Go to Applications/Menu/Edit
2) On the primary shortcuts, press and hold the shortcut you wish to remove and drag it up by the rest of your apps. You should now have an open slot.
3) Find the Handcent icon and drag it down to the primary shortcuts bar.
4) Click Menu/Save
You should now have Handcent app as a primary shortcut.

This absolutely will work (personal experience doing this on both Froyo and GB stock). One note - you will need to make sure your applications are in "grid view" instead of "list mode" or you won't get the right menu options... at least that's what I recall.

Downloaded Apps Not in Alphabetic Order

Is there a way to get the Tab to display downloaded apps in alphabetical order? My other Android devices all mange to do it.
Ive noticed that if you delete a app, and then download a new one it, that app will get placed in that "empty" spot in alpha order, also there should be a search function like the htc's
If you're talking about the Launcher Tray, TouchWiz (the Samsung Launcher) just plain doesn't do this. You can use a replacement launcher like ADW, ADW EX, Launcher Pro, Home+, Open Home, et cetera. Most Launcher's do, with reason, alphabetize, but Samsung's does not, and has no setting to make it sort.
... or you can manually rearrange the icons. Applications>Soft Menu Button>Edit ... Drag&Drop
just cls cache in apps management
Jarez - could you walk me through the steps to do that? thanks
Mike
The best option is to throw touchwiz away and install LauncherPro, ADW or so... it will make your life happier in the end...

hi, can somebody elaborate on the steps to do this. many thanks.
This works: Go to Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->All tab->Samsung Home and click on Clear cache.
Note: This will clear your widgets and desktop settings too.

When you say clear do you mean remove them? I only want to have them in order not removed completely.

This really is the best advice. You're better off getting used to a more advanced launcher replacement early on, than regularly butting up against the limitations of the stock or Samsusng ones until you finally give in and use one. YMMV, but if you use your Tab a lot, you'll appreciate the added features. There are plenty out there, but LP and ADW are the most popular and certainly the easiest ones to find help/info on on the forums.
I would suggest you get ADW Launcher or ADW Launcher Ex (seems to be a tad faster than ADW) if you want to retain the horizontal pagination style of the app drawer. It also sorts alphabetically and has catalogs which let you create icon groups.
I find ADW Launcher Ex is the closest to TouchWiz when configured correctly. It also has the option of coloring the icons' backgrounds similar to what TouchWiz does if a bit off from the original. Then again no launcher is perfect.
I've actually recently fallen in love with the "4D" vertical in ADW Ex. The little flow at the top and bottom is nice, but in general the verticals with the smooth unpaginated view seems to make it faster for me to get where I want to go, especially as an app junkie. It seems like the paginated ones in any launcher are just a bit slower to load too (maybe determining the page breaks, I don't know). I also agree that none is perfect, but ADW is getting there

[Q] Just got Atrix - what should I get? launchers, apps etc

Wanna check out ADW and Launcher Pro, but what else is awesome?
Coming from a BB world phone.
thanks all
Try Go Launcher Ex as well. It's very smooth on this phone.

I cam from a BB as well and definitely recommend Go Launcher EX.
Set up Corporate Sync under accounts to sync to your exchange server. I recommend Pure Calendar Widget for displaying any amount of future events in a good format on one of your hgomescreens. Go Contacts for better organization of your contacts. Otherwise, have fun going through the tons of widgets and apps for customizing to your liking.
i third Go Launcher EX, as well as GO SMS. Also Fancy Widget.

Alll,
Thanks for the ino, tried them all out and liked ADW best, but probably just cuz of all the transitions. Havent had time to truly understand the benefits. However for most of the weekend I decided it best to get familiar with blue. The homescreen switcher problem drove me a bit nuts in that no matter what I couldnt set the home button to work as a home button, it always switched to whatever default I had used.
On to my main question:
When I use a new launcher to I always have to make a new setup or is there a way that I can get all the widgest and shortcuts over to ADW (or whatever) without doing it manually?
Also, how can I prevent my contacts from bringing over every damn email address I've ever sent to? I set up some favs but I really dont need [email protected] and that.

In all 3 launchers mentioned in this thread, there is an option under the launcher preferences to save layout / content, etc. to your SD card, that way you can always restore the icon layout. NOTE: when you do this and have widgets on your "pages", the restore layout option within the launchers will not restore the widgets... apparently this is a a limitation in the Android OS
second question: Contacts app -> hit the menu softkey on your phone -> settings -> select "Phone numbers only"

3 dot menu and widgets

I wonder if someone can help me replace the recent apps menu button for the settings button (3 dot menu) like how it is done on the one X, also is there a way to remove the widgets section on the app drawer.
Thanks and please .

You can flash a ROM (I use AOKP and it has this) that has settings for manipulating the Navigation Bar.

Well, you can always try out a different launcher. The closest I can think of that mimics stock the best is Nova Launcher and it can remove the Widgets menu (I forgot if you have to pay for the Prime version to do this.)
