Possible Root Exploit... - Droid Eris Android Development

The Droid Incredible was recently rooted. The link to the method is here:
http://www.unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php?id=public:adb_in_recovery
Anybody want to take a look and see if it has potential to be tailored to the Eris to grant root access to leakers? I don't have any vested interest in it myself, but I thought it might help.
EDIT: I'm not suggesting anybody try this in its current state. A word for non-devs: don't go bricking your phone.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure people were on this as soon as the news broke. Might be a hint in there somewhere. Another thing I was thinking about was the RUU that came out to flash the OTA and if they could be set up like the hardSPL(?) prompt that was used when flashing HTC Windows Mobile phones. I never got too deep into creating roms besides extracting builds and researching.

Folks the jcase will be working on this I believe, there is mention of this in the leak root thread. If this exploit will work then he and his team or whom ever will surely get it to

There is video posted on YouTube on gaining root to the Incredible, Dev's have probalby seen it, for everyone else here:
Part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEBrEp8q0f4
Part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDGhV1MwODk
It's very interesting to watch

I can't seem to get adb to run while in recovery. I'm guessing it doesn't start for the split second like the incredible does

Run down,
Looks like the race condition is here, but there is a variable we don't know. Incredible ppl are randomly hitting root, and believe it may have to do with the sdcard they are using.

Thanks for the update on your trials, good to know its there. Good luck. I'm going to try some more myself

Can you elaborate? Do you mean it has been confirmed that ADB is started while booted into recovery on an Eris?

If anyone is using a 3rd party sd card made by adata, please get in contact with the eris devs.

jcase is being very careful with what he says. If he or another "dev" say too much, people go overboard in anticipation.

Your right and I am no dev. Even if the adb will open in recovery doesn't mean we'll surely have root so people shouldn't blow this up and please don't spam the boards with questions of whether its been rooted or not. Leave the devs be so they can do their thing if root happens they will let us know

Is adata the only 3rd party brand you are looking for?
I know I have a couple of different 3rd party brand cards. I will look for an adata, but may have others to try as well if needed. I know I have a couple of Dane Electronics cards. I will see what I can dig up when I get home after work.

I'll venture out on a limb and say "no". Did something happen for someone using an Adata brand card ? Hmmm... Also, given today's production setups, an Adata SD card may be identical to a brand "x" card, a brand "y" card, and a brand "z" card. Just different names printed on them.

As i said to Acidbath back before the rooted ROM was leaked, keeping people in the dark is not productive and adds nothing to the effort.
A simple yes or no would be more then sufficient.
The questions will come regardless of any posts or non posts on the subject.

I'd be more than willing to bet that whatever stock card the Eris has is identical to and Adata card. This might just be a coincidence with the Increds that have been rooted.

Not arguing that

So where's our big update? Is it just me or do you feel like this is way past due?

Out more than a month (for the 3G model) and only one minor update, so far? Where's my microSD support, for example?
Is it just me, or am I being a little impatient here? I figured that the microSD would be fixed by now, at the very least.....
I feel you but I learned not to expect anything anymore. If I make up one day and there's an update waiting for me then great. But holding your breath would be a baaaad idea!
[sent with Xooming Android technology]
I agree, although I am unsure of whether to blame google or motorola. The SD card would be nice, and so would a few hundred less FCs.
FWIW, I've been making new kernels and such, so I get updates all the time
But seriously:

Yeah, I'm sure that issue is square on Google; it's also part of the issue of why there's MTP support and not USB Mass-Storage, since the former works on files (vs. filesystems for USB M-S, which is why you had to pull it down manually); since I suspect the issue that Google is solving with our "one filesystem for apps and user stuff" is where/how the uSD will be mounted/shared on our devices.
Thought the 4g update would be 90 days or something...
Very impatient.
I can't wait for the 4G upgrade but now that I have the ThunderBolt I wonder how much the Xoom battery is going to last. I get around four hours with the 4G on.

Carrier IQ

All right the company Carrier IQ is suddenly popping up in news stories everywhere. I assume I am safe from this garbage if I am using Cyanogenmod but how do I make sure my Wife's shift is clean of this if she's using Stock rooted 2.2? She will not let me change roms or even upgrade her to 2.3 so I would like to know what I need to delete to make sure Carrier IQ is not installed on her Shift or at least not sending any info back to it's mother ship.
If you haven't heard Carrier IQ is installed on millions of phones of different manufacturer's and is supported by many carriers including HTC and Sprint. It collects data and sends it back to Sprint or who knows who. Apparently it can log everything and it ignores any permissions or security you have set up or something like that. It is installed "invisibly" and you do not have the option to opt in or out. I assume Titanium or some other program can see the pieces I would need to delete but I don't know what they are.
Here's where I read about it and it does list an app that may be able to take care of it but I would rather know how to do it manually:

I think he already mentioned that yes she does have root on stock if you read the OP. So yes titanium backup should be able to remove it no problem. Use the app carrier IQ detector to find out how much of it needs to be removed.

SE Android

I just read today about the new SE Android put together by the NSA and was curious to know a little more about it, it sounds like an interesting project.
First I was wondering if any developers plan to put together ROMs for our phone using this and second, what would be the benefit, if any, for us using SE Android? Near as I can tell this is best for people that just want to click and download apps from the market without ever really finding out what they do, what info they access, etc... If that is truly the only benefit here then it seems like it's not really that interesting of a topic.
Any feedback from devs (or non-devs) would be appreciated, I am very curious.

I looked at XDA as well and it looks like there may be a ROM for the Thunderbolt as well

Sorry about not previously providing links. I just figured that devs would be more in the know than I and would have already heard if something was out there.
edit: looks like it's not actually a ROM for the thunderbolt yet, just talk of someone developing it at this point.

indeed. NSA. I uninstalled it, and got probs with sending sms, They simply don't send after uninstalling that seandroid app. There's that everending waving blue circle pointer. However, uninstalling got me rid of the grey triangle notification message called 'Detect information'.

No, because then who are the dumb a$$es going to blame and bug if it does not work, or breaks something.
Not a smart idea for a dev to post something that they are not sure of, and possibly have people lose faith in that developer. I know as a dev I would not post ANYTHING, that I was not sure if it worked or not. Even if I did it on a test unit, and not a retail phone.

Unless you're going to install a custom ROM, it's not as important anymore to root these phones.
The SIII lets you uninstall [disable] almost any stock app you want.
After disabling a ****-load of stock apps, I am getting awesome battery & performance from my S III.
I'd like to see some theming and custom ROM's and overclocking though of course.

Eh, that's debateable. In the end it boils down to what you want to do with the device. For me? I want root so I can reinstall Cerberus to the System folder so even if someone wipes my phone, I can still track it. Can't do that without root.

Yea, this is actually the first AT&T Smartphone where I haven't cursed them out for the amount of bloatware installed. Granted I did immediately load Apex Launcher to tide me over until I can install CM9. I hate how touchwiz looks, but that's not AT&T, that's Samsung. This thing honestly speeds along, especially with websites. I'm also apparently in an LTE test area.....with a piss poor signal I was pulling about a 20mbit download and 13 mbit upload. I have to say, it's faster and more responsive than my GSII with CM9. That's impressive considering it is running TW.
Also from looking at his posts he did order it....so he could be using the GNex until he can. Though this pretty much is the GNex....just not running stock Android.

So is Cydia Substrate and Winterboard not compatible together with motochopper root? Coming from the IOS side Cydia and Winterboard were pretty much everything when it came to customizing the iPhone and super easy to use so I hope that is not the case

Cydia causes a huge problem with the S4. Touch wiz was even removed from the compatibility list in the description. My advice is stay away. Once we're able to flash ROMs we won't need it anyway.

I keep getting stuck at the ATT logo during boot up and I tried to Odin but get this. I am usually proficient with all things root but this has me stumped. Any idea what i am missing or doing wrong?
Oh, the stuck on ATT logo came about from inadvertently running a rom installer on computer with phone connected and not moving the proper files to the phone.

Sorry for the late response, have you fixed your problem yet? What version of Odin are you running? Are you using a quality USB cable? Have you tried another COM port? Hopefully you already fixed it but just in case...

No problem, I appreciate any response. It turns out I just had a laptop that decided to become a paper weight. Odin'd on a newer faster computer and everything went great!

(The description never had a compatibility list.) FWIW, the issue with the S4 was caused by something Samsung did that was rather weird (putting some libcutils.so symbols into their liblog.so, probably to make it easier for them to target their proprietary tools to their device using the NDK). Later versions of Substrate now are able to detect such symbol incompatibilities on the device by comparing the symbol tables of the various libraries. I also noticed, with some third-party testing and some testing I was able to do in person, that some of Samsung's tools seem to be relying on some uninitialized memory, so I blacklisted those processes (and when I get some more time on the S4 I will look to see if there are things I can do, such as maybe zero'ing the stack before releasing back to the tool, to mitigate this and remove those blacklists). Substrate seems to work without issue or side effect on this device now. I'm sorry about any issues you had .

Good to hear Jay. I was looking forward to a reply to my email but this will do.
BTW what other extensions are you going to bring to Android?
