Any movie making apps like imovie? - EVO 4G General

I am just curious. It would be great to create and edit like the imovie app.

WeVideo?
I do regular web searches to see if anybody has developed a viable video editor / movie maker for android, and finally there's some hope.
Just came across this tonight - http://blog.wevideo.com/bid/272187/WeVideo-Launches-iMovie-Competitor-App-for-Android
It's a new app called WeVideo (just released, so it's still in BETA), and it's pitching itself as an iMovie-like editor for ANdroid, with some cloud-based features and other differences, but what's important as it appears to provide full "movie making" capabilities across various Android devices.
I just tried it out and it works well, with a few oversights like:
- No transition control
- No volume control for music tracks
- No local, uncompressed storage of published video (not that I've found anyhow)
Just for starters. But, if you don't mind using their simple theme, and don't want to include your own music, it works pretty well.
It's also nice that it supports publishing of your videos directly to YouTube, despite not exporting to sdcard etc.
I'll post this reply in a few other threads asking about better video editors for Android as well.

HD2 Youtube app is crap!

On my laptop and desktop, I can find official music videos of songs quite easily, but on the youtube app on the HD2, it's very difficult, seems like the searches are filled more with chipmunk versions of the songs that I am searching for.
So what I'm testy about is that the youtube app on the hd2 seems to be filtered so that you can't easily find the good official music videos.
I'm sure it runs tip tops for most of the users and I'm sure this topic will get 100,000 views without a single reply, but I just felt like making it aware that the youtube app is crippled.
That is all.
Haven't used it much to look for music videos, so I'll take your word for it. But for what I've used it for, it's fine. I don't like that it doesn't open if someone sends a link to you on an email or text, wish they would fix that.

I feel you! That has happend to me a few times. If someone talks about a youtube video on twitter or something it is a pain in the ass to find unless I know the title literally word for word. Also..It does work really well if I am bored and just want to watch some videos. So It doesnt not suck that bad
It sucks for channels too. I have added several to mine, It does not sort channel videos by post date, I follow several that post a few a week and vlogs would prefer the most recent to be at the top, I cannot seem to figure out the sort pattern it is using, it just seems to randomly select videos from the channel.
When i got the HD2 i thought id shift alot of my youtube viewing to it and get away from the PC, however that youtube app makes for so much work to try and find a channel's most recent video posts that i almost never use the app.
Really all its good for is viewing the "most popular" or "newest" videos that come up on the very 1st screen of the app, or if you know of an EXACT title to search for
The youtube app in the marketplace seems to do a better job with sorting vids, but its a piece of crap to use on the HD2, video quality is horrible. I dont know why there are 2 different versions of the youtube app

Yeah, If you get a youtube url from an email or text, it should open up the youtube app, how hard can it be to set it up like that? It's the littlest things like this that add up.
Like for example, I just youtube'd on my laptop "Like a G6 Far East Movement" and got their official music video, I did the exact same thing right now on my HD2 using the youtube app and it said "No Videos Found".
Something is filtering the HD2's search queries.

Just answered my own question looking at the about info on the HD2 youtube app, its written by HTC, whereas the marketplace one i believe is written by youtube.
The HTC app is great for viewing if they could just get the searching and the sorting of channel videos straightened out
If I use Opera to search the phrases that find the videos on my laptop, it will find them just fine on youtube.com, but my Opera version has no flash and I don't like Internet Explorer on the HD2. Oh well, It works fine, just doesn't find the official music videos some times, does a damn good job at finding the chipmunk versions of the songs I search for.
I wonder if this is a youtube/copyright issue...Hmmmmm conspiracy!

I forget the name of the addon, but there is one that uses the IE browser's flash plugin in opera and it works decently well with youtube. I tried it for awhile, but hated that whatever the addon does it must change the browsers user agent string because the "my account" features no longer work because it cant detect it as a mobile browser.
The addon here here on XDA, some searching aught to find it. I dont have a URL handy
Of course when you remove the addon it does not seem to reset the browsers useragent string to the opera default one. I ended up having to hardreset my phone to get everything working as it was prior.
Youtube and Youtube Mobile are two very different things. Youtube Mobile uses streaming .3gp media, while regular Youtube is flash based.
When a video is uploaded to Youtube, it has to be converted to .3gp format in order for most mobile phones to play it. Obviously when your talking millions and millions of uploads some videos get passed over. Go to www.m.youtube.com in your desktop browser and search for something, you'll see the same results you get on mobile.
Solution: download Skyfire and use real Youtube: problem solved.
Hope this helps.
~Jasecloud4
Judging by the video quality of the videos in the HTC youtube app, im pretty sure it is pulling the .mp4 video files from youtube. Youtube by default serves up the videos on their website in .flv and .mp4. If you use firefox install a plugin called "DownloadHelper" and you'll see the videos available. Each youtube video page has about 6-8 different .flv/.mp4 files linked to it of differing video qualities. When youtube is completely unstreamable in the evenings, ill use downloadhelper to queue up downloads of the .mp4 files of videos i want to watch, and then just sit and watch them all using media player classic from the klite mega codec pack once they all finish downloading. using the .mp4 files and media player classic also has the benefit of being less of a resource hog. flash video playback will peg my CPU at 100% the whole time. the .mp4/MPC combo usually stays under 50%
I think the official youtube app in the marketplace, and the youtube.com that pulls up in mobile browsers uses the .3gp format which looks like utter crap on our HD2s.
agree... it's slow sometimes...
It's been like this on just about every phone I've had. They should really look into making it better, it bothers me as well
App download
Try downloading the app called skyfire it is a browser that activates the adobe flash features & plays better movies

Yup thats it, like i said though it changes something, likely the browser's user agent string, so the t-mobile my account webpage will say that you need to use a mobile browser to access this site. basically i think they've changed the user agent string to emulate a desktop browser so sites like youtube will load the full real youtube site and not the mobile version by default.
I wish that addon would leave the user agent string alone, because its not much trouble to scroll down to the bottom of the youtube mobile site and choose to view the desktop version, which i believe it remembers until you clear your cookies anyways so you dont have to deal with it that often

Yeah it does change the user agent in the registry. I found a key in "HKLM/Opera/Prefs/User Prefs/Custom User-Agent" that contains the agent I picked in the fixOperaFlash app. I wonder if one could simply insert the original agent string back (or delete the custom key entirely) with the flash bits still working properly?
Edit: Confirmed, I nuked the above key entirely. Started opera and it had reverted to it's stock user agent. Went to youtube, scrolled to the bottom and clicked the desktop link, then plugged in a video that I know is not available on youtube mobile, worked great. Tmo MyAccount seems to work properly as well.
i just want it to run like it does on android, when i was using my g1 i would search for videos on the browser and all the videos would pop up just like on a computer that wouldnt pop up on the g1 youtube app, then i would click it and play it through the youtube app just fine and great quality. They should of made it like that and i remember someone on this forum told me there was a regedit that you could do to make it do that on this phone but i dont know if you have to flash a new rom or get it from this forum or not.

I have noticed that on the app videos don't appear at the same time as on the desktop version, they appear like 6 hours later...besides that everything looks good.

Some tips, apps and suggestions.

Most of you will already know most of this, but I thought I would post a collection of things I have tried and have found useful on my Transformer, hopefully you will see something you haven't tried or though of.
I will add more as I think of them or find new solutions to problems.
1. Try MultiPicture if you are having problems getting Wallpapers to work on the tablet, it scales the image to fit the screen, so you won’t get your image cropped or distorted. Use a 1280x800, 72dpi image for perfect results. In MultiPicture settings, you can disable the homescreen scrolling so that the image stays still when you flip through your homescreens. You can also use different pictures on each homescreen if you like.
2. Use a static picture as wallpaper, live wallpapers are fun but seem to slow down the home screen transitions slightly in Honeycomb still.
3. Rockplayer, Vplayer and Moboplayer are all great apps that support almost every movie format and codec out there, they allow you to play movie files on the tablet that aren’t supported out of the box. You may have to select the Software decoding option in Rockplayer to get some formats working.
4. If you don’t already have it, install Windows Media Player 11 or higher on your PC and add any folders that you would like to be able to access from the Transformer to the library in WMP. (don’t forget to share them in windows as well by right clicking them and going to the sharing option etc.)
5. Install the app UPnPlay, it will make viewing your shared media much easier. It also allows you to choose the app you want to view media with, so you can choose Rockplayer or Vplayer etc to stream your movies.
6. Plex is another good app for accessing shared media, you have to install a server application on your PC and add any folders you want to be shared to the server application, then run the tablet app. It’s very simple and it adds cover art etc to your movies by searching the files meta data.
7. Install File Manager HD, it’s a great tablet optimised file manager and it can see your network shared files once you add a new W-lan connection. Use 192.168.0.2 (or your PC’s IP address), your Windows log on name and your Windows password.
8. If you are looking for a good news reader for your tablet, try News 360, it has a great interface and works really well. It has the option to show local news as well as national/international.
9. A great Magazine app recently released for Honeycomb is Zinio, try the version from the market, its slightly different to the one on the transformer, I prefer the UI. Zinio has a large and growing selection of magazines, its interface is great and the magazines look amazing on the transformers screen.
10. ACV is a brilliant comic viewer that reads most comic formats, it works well on the tablet.
11. Extended Controls is a brilliant app/widget that lets you add controls for virtually every setting on your tablet to your homescreen, for example WiFi or Bluetooth and even a toggle to force a media scan (useful if you have just transferred files to your tablet and they aren’t showing in the gallery etc.)
12. Plume is the Twitter app I am using, it has a great tablet optimised interface and a brilliant widget.
13. It’s still a bit choppy and laggy sometimes, but try out the website www.m.tvcatchup.com for free to air UK television channels, a huge selection of free channels that play about 5 seconds behind live TV. Wifi recommended but I have had it working on 3G. Some channels work better than others. Try changing your browser agent from android to desktop or even iPhone to get a better result.
14. TV Guide UK is just that, a great TV guide for your tablet, it’s not Honeycomb optimised and runs in portrait mode, but it works well and has a great interface. You can filter the channels in the settings to just show the channels you have or want to see.

Thanks so much for this lol. i never knew that function existed and i've been using it from day one.
EXCELLENT post, thank you! On the News360, I LOVE it, but it doesn't show my local newspapers (Mendocino County in Northwestern California), the nearest it shows are in the San Francisco Bay Area, over 100 miles south of me, maybe I need to shoot off an email to them.
your welcome
Always interested to read TF users tips and some very useful ones here, many thanks

[Q] Can I create a video playlist on the A500?

I'm new to the world of Android, but I've had my eye on the Acer Iconia A500 for a while. After getting my hands on one recently for a few minutes in a store, I'm pretty sure this is the tab I want. The feature set is excellent, the form factor is really nice, and the price is right too!
But before I buy, there's something I need to know (which I was not able to learn after searching this forum extensively). I want to use my A500 for video playback -- specifically, for playing a playlist of short videos, in sequence. This is for performances that I do which include video projections.
Are there video players available for the A500 that can use playlists? And if so, what are the transitions between videos in a playlist like? What I'd prefer would be just a seamless jump from one video to the next. A delay of up to a few seconds would be OK, but I would want to see only a black screen during that time. I don't want to see the video player controls, the tablet home screen, or anything else appearing in between videos.
If you smart people here can put my mind at rest that this is possible, it will move me one step closer to becoming an Iconia A500 owner. Thanks in advance...
If you get the Act1 video player you can create playlists. You can even have them play randomly through the settings. Act1 combined with the hdmi out means music videos on autopilot when I have people over.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
projectdownset: Cool, thanks... I figured there must be video players that would do this, but wanted to know for sure. You mention that random play is possible with Act1, but I assume I could also play in a defined order as well... is that correct?
Also, what are the transitions between videos like?
P.S. Apologies if my questions seem dumb... I have ZERO experience with Android. I'm guessing there are probably video player apps that will do what I want, but I can't afford to invest in a tablet without knowing whether it can do what I need.
Again, I just need to know if there's a video player that will play a playlist of videos in sequence, with seamless (invisible) transitions between videos.
Set my mind at ease and help me join the ranks of A500 owners!
projectdownset: Do you use Act1 with an external monitor or projector? Because I see this on the Act1 FAQ page:
My phone has an HDMI output port. Will it work with Act 1?
No, Act 1 can't access the HDMI output port of Android devices. Manufacturers of Android devices with HDMI output (such as the Droid X and HTC Evo) are using their own applications and interfaces to access the HDMI port. This functionality is not made available to third party applications, unfortunately.
The more general problem is that Android doesn't have a concept of external display devices. That is to say, no one can write a general application that can access a monitor that is not the device's builtin screen. Some day Google may expand Android to generally support external displays, but today it's not possible.

I created a shortcut for my playlist and played it right on my tv. The acer and xoom mirror the tab unlike other phomes that have a seperate interface for their hdmi.

Update: I have gotten a little more info elsewhere. An Asus Transformer owner was nice enough to test video playback for me in the Dice, MX, and Mobo players.
Here's what they found:
Dice player : No playlists but it can be set to play all the files in a specific folder sequentially. The player controls do pop up for a few seconds between each file and I couldn't see any way to disable this.
MX Player : No playlists or whole folder support that I could find. Each file needs to be started manually.
Moboplayer : Playlist support, but as far as I can tell, no auto-advance to next file.

OK, cool. Thanks for the info.
Any other Act1 users out there know what the transitions between videos in a playlist look like?
Fast transitions. Hard to change the video. I hide the onscreen controls so I have to press next on the screen four or five times to fast forward through the video. I'm sure there's an easier way I just have to mess with it. You should just try it and if you don't like it get a refund.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
projectdownset: Thanks again. Elsewhere on the internets, I got a response from a Galaxy S user who tried Act1 with a playlist, and said there were no transitions between videos other than about 0.25 seconds of black. That's exactly what I was hoping to hear.
I think I will go ahead and get the A500 and see how it works out!
Video editor
If these are videos that have a predefined order.and always the same videos.edit them on your PC into one segment you can then control every aspect of transition and so on.you can then play it with most players.
Goodluck
Hi Erica,
They do not always have the same order. I sometimes want to add or remove videos, or change the order.
I used to use a portable DVD player... but of course that required me to burn a DVD every time. I wanted a solution that would allow me more flexibility. I've been using my laptop recently (with the VLC player, which has nice playlists and clean transitions).
But it would be great to use a tablet instead -- much more portable. From what I'm hearing about Act 1, I think I could run it on the A500 and get good results.

Airplay receivers in share video menu?

For those who seek it, true airplay compatibility would be a simple, implemented service throughout the device using it's stock media players.
When I play a video I transfer onto my device, there is a share button on the top right. When I click see all, I noticed that Evernote and a few other downloaded apps are in the menu. Also true of youtube videos, which can be shared to a number of applications.
My question may be obvious now, but is there a way for an app to run in the background and enable a list of airplay devices from that menu?
Or maybe a simpler solution would be Doubletwist player (or another airplay capable player) to be one of those share sources, being a quick shortcut. I just hate having a bunch of players for different scenarios. I would love that process to be a bit more tied together.
Just stirring the pot.

Pop-Out / Overlay video, why isn't this widely supported yet?

I just noticed that not only the Native video player offers a pop-out / video-overlay function (not to be confused with multi-window!), but also other apps do. Precisely those that use the Native Samsung video player to play their videos, instead of some proprietary crap.
There were only two apps I found that did this: BBC News and Naver (a Korean news portal and e-mail company, compare Yahoo!).
Neither any the other news apps (I tried euronews, FT, Guardian and CNN) nor YouTube can do this, even though it'd be genius.
(I'd use the apps more often.)
Is this feature really official yet? I know it's available already on the Galaxy S3 (and maybe even S2), because I saw it on the subway in Korea.
As an example, see the attached screenshots.
