Someone that has root and can nandroid willing to try this method?
You would have to do all of this in recovery mod so you have rw permissions.
Though you dont need nandroid, because disabling returns all stock files back to the phone. Its just safer.
This is for people that want 2.1 or a completely working rom with JIT enabled (since 2.2 is still in development). Hoping someone that switched from the cdma hero tries this that has done it before. Read through the post. HTC SENSE will not work with JIT.
Instead of "adb remount" if not working, use this....
adb shell
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system

I'll try this as soon as my phone shows up. Unfortunately Sprint didn't mail my phone out until today (I ordered at 9pm on Thursday night), so I won't see it until Monday.

I wish i was receiving an Evo. My best friend got one though and he lives down the street. So you know for sure ima be messin with his phone a lot. I would try this on his phone but i wont see him till tomorrow. So i might do it before you still.

Cool, I'll probably root, slap helix on, try the overclock from another post, get jit going and then start benchmarking. If you get to your buddy's Evo, post your results!

Will do.. I see this way of JIT not being around for much longer. The 2.2 update will wipe it out of existence. But if this works its something to play with until then.
i got jit to work, at the price of removing the HTC keyboard, and lockscreen. just for fun of course. got up to 9.915. can't wait until devs like toast and darch get this oc'd AND get jit working!

Awesome to see someone try it. Some people might use this until the source of 2.2 is released (since it has the official JIT).
I personally didnt like using sense, so this was something i always did when using a htc rom.
Also i never thought of the keyboard being a problem, iv never used a the stock keyboard other then for setting my phone up when first installing a rom.
JIT enabling should do a lot better than getting you up to 9mflops. the nexus uses the same processor, and with 2.2 and JIT it throws out 36-44 mflops
Yeah but remember this is not the same JIT as in 2.2. And in 2.1 it is VERY unstable. On my Hero it would randomly reboot multiple times a day. Maybe 5-10. And it's not nearly as fast as 2.2's JIT.

I am not knowledgeable enough to do this myself, or I would. I would like to request a plain AOSP 2.1 build ROM for the CDMA Hero. I figure since the kernel source code is out and Android 2.1 source code is out, this one shouldn't be too difficult to achieve.
I'm not big on the extra apps in a ROM either. I'm talking almost barebones. I don't want Sense either...just a plain AOSP.
Anyone want that too? If so, add your comment here and let's see if you can get someone more skilled than me to do it.
I also realize that it does take time to make a ROM, so if this doesn't come to fruition I'm not going to get upset, but figured I have nothing to lose by asking.
Thanks
yeah would love 2.1
i love the bottom menus with the dots instead of drawer and new icons
i hope its like this onedaylol

A plain just from source build would be right up my alley as well.
I also would like. Anyone want to start a donation pot for the dev that does it? I would donate.
Me too. Just like the Nexus One, no Sprint-specific apps, but also no funny stuff like adding apps or changing colors. What is AOSP?
AOSP = Android Open Source Project

LOLLL
I usually hate posts like this, but the situation DEFININTELY called for it
Sweet, Advanced On-Board Signal Processor, got it.
Uh, that's a joke btw.
+1..... a fully functioning plain vanilla 2.1 ROM for my Hero!!!
This may take some time.. Although we have the kernel, from my understanding there is still some porting that needs to happen to the 2.1 code so that the AOSP will run on our phone with all the different hardware. HTC was right on time with this release i was two days away from ordering an n1 from google. guess ill stick around and learn as much as i can and see what happens
yes please. as plain as possible
You can use flipz 2.1 Rom, turn sense off, and that would be a 2.1 vanilla Rom ...... that is what I'm doing right now for the moment

Besides having the hero apks, does this ROM (when sense is turned off) look and act like the Nexus 1 ROM?
(I would try it for myself, but I don't wanna go through the hassle of wiping my device and restoring all the info/data)
Thanks for answering my question.
PS: I actually like Hero's Phone, Contacts and Calendar a lot more than stock.
Yeah, I would definitely be interested in this too. I just switched over from a Touch Pro a few weeks ago, and have been reading up on Hero ROMs, but none have really caught my attention too much yet. I'm not usually a fan of all the HTC goodies....
(Also, I'm a new poster here.. This seems like a better place for Hero stuff than where I was over at PPCgeeks)

If only
The kernel source is out, yes, but for 2.1 to run at its best, it needs to be running 2.6.29 kernel version, which is not released (for our phone). I'm working on a port, but so far it doesn't boot )) and others may be in the process of doing the same.
There are other projects to get AOSP 2.0.1 and 2.1 on the phone, and those have been working with the 2.6.27 kernel, which is not going to run as well as intended. Of course all it'll take is replacing the kernel, hopefully, and I'm sure someone will make a breakthrough in porting the kernel soon
I think I might just have to flash a Sense ROM to try it out. I don't get 3G in my apartment for some reason, but Clear's map shows it in full 4G. I don't know if I can go though with it though!

Sense Rom using LauncherPro as your home....what's the issue!?
Edit: <-- you can see my UI there!
Edit: Well, don't know what happened to that post, but Sense still clogs up the ROM, even without using Rosie.
I'd say just nand backup your current love (I'm assuming CM6)
Install a sense Rom for the day (week, whatev')
And on your way home (or just out of the city) Nand restore and you'll have the best of it all. Or you could just nand back up the sense Rom too and switch back and forth while you're there as your needs dictate!

Well I actually live there for the whole school year, so if 4G is as good as it seems then I may have a conflict.
For most things, I don't even notice a difference, here in Austin, TX. Yes, it's faster... Yes, app downloads are slightly faster, and web pages open maybe 2 seconds faster... but, it's not mind-blowing. The hassle of dealing with the 4G toggle switch, (to prevent battery drain,) is a pain...
I wish there was a 4G-toggle program that would use GPS, and check every 10-15 minutes, and turn it on accordingly... when you venture out of 4G coverage, just have it disable it until it finds you in a valid coverage area.
I had the same problem when Orlando went to 4G. I finally stopped at EViO with the KingxKernel BFS kernel, and I have to say that this thing is fast and snappy where I am completely happy with having this until CM6 supports 4G. If you find that 4G is a deal breaker, the best thing to do is to sit down and test out a bunch of different Sense ROMs with a few different Kernels and find out which is barable enough to switch it to a daily ROM.
Eh, I can't bring myself to go back to Fresh. It just wouldn't feel right. D:

It's perfect for a bit of Pokémon
does anyone know if this will get at&t 3g?
AT&T have the Flipout which is basically the same phone with a weirder design.
Sad to say I might actually wind up returning the phone.
I LOVE the form factor and performance is good enough, but...
Theres 2 big issues
I can't keep an internet connection, it's constantly dropping and not getting picked up again unless I reboot or reactivate and deactivate airplane mode.
The colors on the screen are sooo washed out. It looks like 8 bit color, it look's like there's a bright version and dark version of each color.
This is a hard decision
-Mike dg
You're right, the terrible screen is my main problem with the phone... not having any internet connection problems though, that's odd.
sooo
do any roms work on the charm? it's technically a motorola device so i'm tempted to just try one of those roms but don't wanna brick it only a couple hours after buying it.
I don't think so, it's QVGA after all.

Yeah the T-Mobile Charm is butt ugly, the Telus Charm however is much better looking- no bright green text on the keyboard and it's all black instead of that bronze/brown bezel. It's not THAT laggy, it's less laggy than the LG Ally/Shine Plus.
I rooted it and tried to checkout the recovery partition. I guess mounting it as yaffs2 wrote to it and now recovery won't boot. anyone able to make a NAND dump?
Normal system still boots fine, and /system is editable. It's just my first Android device since the G1 and I didn't play with it much so I was trying to see how things worked. Oops. I did a backup of several mtd partitions but I suppose after I broke the signature.
Any help greatly apprechiated. I even tried to see if I could edit the version string the device sends to motorola to check for updates to see if I could find the download URL... no luck there. arrghh. Sniffing the HTML request and resending it myself also came back as Unauthorized, weird.
edit: in a root terminal: "dd if=/dev/block/mtdblock5 of=/cache/recovery.bin" should be what i need...

poking around more I see a kineto_gan module. where's the rest of the UMA programs? the rumors must be true.. it's coming..!

That is the full flash, incase you mess up your phone you can fix it back to factory. Also, in case they later patch the root exploit, you can use this to downgrade and then root the phone.
I have an unlocked Telus Charm that was bricked, and I flashed it with the T-Mobile rom found at the link posted. They are the same phone, so I thought this would be fine to do, but I now have no service (actually, only extremely intermittent service—I've caught a few bars once) on my device (using a Fido SIM). Any ideas? Any source for an original Telus rom to try? Maybe someone would be willing and gracious enough to provide a Nandroid backup of a factory-state Telus Charm?? Thank you so much for any help!
Just what the title says - a few days ago, Froyo was put into beta testing for the Epic 4G. The photo is cropped as to not get anyone into trouble. I just thought it might be nice to know that it's getting closer!
Since I'm new (not very many posts - I tend to just search & read), I can't post a full link, so you'll have to copy & paste. Sorry!

Tough crowd. How is it spam? I have an Epic, it has Froyo on it. I just don't want to get my Sprint contact in trouble. What do you want to know?
I wanna see you put it up for all of us to test instead of rubbing it in our faces, and say you are beta testing Froyo.
If you'll let me know how to, I will. Will a nandroid backup do, or do I need to do something else? Will a nandroid backup put any identifiable information out that might endanger my Sprint contact (ESN, phone number, etc)?
