Will we ever see... - HD2 General

Windows Marketplace for mobile become bigger and better? I mean there are no apps like MLB live or Scoremobile, things that I think are pretty basic. With WMO 7 coming up soon will Marketplace grow?

6.5 and WP7 are completely different and apps are cross platform compatible. I think the marketplace is pretty much all its going to be. Devs are not going to want to develope for a OS that will be obsolete by the end of the year.

What does the windows 7 update mean for us?

I see lots of people say when windows mobile 7 goes on our device it will be unbeatable, why is this? I dont really see much wrong with this one lol

I don't know about unbeatable but WM7 has gone through several delays as I'm sure Microsoft is aware that they are standing on there last leg to keep there (9%) of there mobile market shares, so......
...if Microsoft is smart, and it looks like they seem to be (delays signify that WM7 is not quite ready and thus, not rushing it), it should be a much improved Operating System as it has to compete against Symbian and Apple's and blackberry.
Market Shares:
Symbian....50.3%
Blackberry..20.9%
Iphone........13.7%
Windows.......9.0%
Andriod.......2.8%
WM 6.5 was was not even supposed to have existed but due to the delays, 6.5 was nothing more than a stand in, holding it's place for what some have anticipated to be revolutionary OS. Not sure if they will push through with that term when it actually comes out of the gates. Time will tell...
There isn't too much wrong with this one. Windows Mobile 6.5 is by far the most powerful mobile OS and it's getting bashed just because it lacks a nice and simple user interface.
Windows Mobile 7 will bring a new, hopefully exciting, user interface, probably based on Silverlight, new APIs for developers to create great applications that look and work much better than what we have now and better integration with Microsoft's services (Zune, XBox, Windows Live, Bing...).
On the other side, it will probably break compatibility with most, if not all, currently available applications.

And I think it should. The past should be scrapped to create a new future. Like OS9 to OSX and PalmOS to WebOS. Bring emulation if really needed.
Don't forget the new core of the CE which will fully support the new fast processors. That means we get an even faster phone.
windows 7 base on ce 6.0 core so ther wont be any backward compatibility.
Probably new core will be much stable and faster (support for FPU) and some othre stuff.
will windows mobile 7 be freely avalible on hd2? some sites are saying yes and others are saying no. it is my understanding that wm 6.5 and wm7 will co-exist, with wm7 aimed at high end devices (i assume because of the higher system requirements). would be good if HTC gave the hd2 wm7, as it would really open up the device in terms of performance and features.

Nobody knows yet.
My guess is that there will not be an official HTC release of it, for the same reason as there hasn't been any official WM6.5 upgrade for the Touch HD - WM7 is due to launch at about the same time as the successor to the HD2 (Q4 this year), and allowing HD2 users to upgrade easily to WM7 would cannibalise sales of the HD3 (or whatever it's called); HTC would obviously prefer people who want to upgrade to WM7 to buy a new HTC phone to do it.
I've no doubt that attempts will be made by the ROM "chefs" on this site to produce "cooked" ROMs for the HD2 based on WM7. However, this may be a much tricker proposition than, say, producing a WM6.5 ROM for a Touch HD, as WM7 is based on an entirely different Operating System kernel and uses a new driver model. That means that unless there is some reference device which uses exactly the same hardware as the HD2 and runs WM7 and whose drivers the ROM chefs can pirate, it's not going to work.

anyone download free/purchase any decent apps lately?

windows mobile apps not booming and growing as fast as apple's app store or android market place..anyone else slightly disappointed? or is this likely to change with the release of windows 7 a completely revamped mobile platform ready to take on the likes of apple and android.

I was, but I've come to the conclusion that the HD2 is a pretty specialist piece of kit and if you want a particular app for it you're going to have to dig. That said, you can and will usually find it (here). I joined xda before getting my HD2 and this site had a lot of influence on my decision to get it. The best apps I've downloaded lately are cht/editor/scheduler 2.0 (quite(ly) brilliant) and DNetworkTools. I really thought the HD7 was the death knell of the HD2, but that deaths been greatly exaggerated.
yes, windows has loads and loads of apps that are really useful (you just need to dig, dig deeper and search)..they are all stand alone apps...unlike that in android and ios, where (al)most of the apps are simple shortcut icons to webpages and need constant data/wifi......most of these apps are useless and servo no purpose apart from a few hrs of fun............windows and hd2 combo is excellent, for a little change, you can log into android too .
coming to new apps, well they will come out...because w7 is still not available everywhere
The HD2 can run WM or Android. I keep coming back to WM since Android doesn't have the apps I want to use.
(Other people's experiences may differ from mine.)
still waiting for the official 3.14 stock rom and i think il wait for the final version of CHT 2 as i experienced a few bugs with the beta..rather stick to winmo as the handset is not a native android device.how stable is android on the hd2?
here is one of the latest apps which i thought was pretty good

No More Android or Apple OS !!!!

hey guys after watching this interview from Microsoft about Windows 8 , for tablets and PCs and laptops ,, i can truthfully say , am not going buy gtab10 or any tablets that support android . am going to wait for the release of any good company for tablet with OS windows 8 and surely i'll buy it ..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MnEndww2YQ&feature=player_embedded#at=16
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDy-7IZBojo&feature=related
do you think android will get busted by windows 8 ?
i want this on my galaxy tab.....
exactly the same thing came to my mind after watching this
would that be possible? they tried arm that has dual core but how about our single core?
i think it will be so hard to fit windows 8 on galaxy tab .... its depend about the dev , anyways they didn't release it yet . now am thinking of buying tab10.1 or waiting for windows 8 with a good company like samsung and only samsung cuz its easy to play with it
Lol, you think its going to be that fast over 3g/hspda, and no, i doubt this will ever come to android tablets, im pretty sure that these will be built around intels new dual core atoms, or maybe the new snapdragons.
edit: The multi-tasking does look neat tho.
They announced support for ARM..

The problems of windows phone is not OS; its a market place, it seems empty. There is nothing on it.
I have used hd2 for couple of month and love user interface of windows but when i open market , it made me mad.
iOS is not a great os , but its apps make it great. Android is growing but windows is all empty place. I will not switch to windows tab unless it has some nice market place.

Pfff, it's Windows !!! it will freeze and crash 1387445 times per day.
And the OS will not be open source, you will not have root.
And the applications will cost more, much more.
I'm willing to give it a try, but I can't say if it'll be better than Android or iOS or QNIX. It's still too early to speculate.
@liniutze
- My Ubuntu crashes a lot more than Windows. My Windows 7 hasn't had a BSOD for a year already.
- Not have root is no problem as long as it will work, imo. What they have to do is to make it idiot-proof.
- We can't really say. There are a lot of free apps for the desktop copy of Windows. If they manage to port a lot of great apps, then money is no problem as long as their quality is nice.
Besides, I expected Apple to have apps which costs like $100. I was wrong, considering that Apple seem to have a more, "prestige" perspective than Windows. I mean, their laptops alone costs twice than Windows laptops.

Exactly. I can't believe this is even a conversation. Android is the fastest growing mobile OS out there. There are over 300,000 Android handsets activated each day. That's a pretty amazing stat. I for one won't give up Android, especially for Windows.

Windows 8 seems great, so this will make people from google to make Android OS even better and that's good for us. Even Windows 7 is actually incredible.
As for iOS, Americans and British will always buy this crap...

ive tried wp7 on a friends phone and its snappy and integrates well with social sites. however, i dont even have an active facebook account and i dont even remember by password in twitter. the only online socialiazing i do is post to forums.
i might have bought one myself but the deal breaker is the missing wifi hotspot functionality. don't count windows mobile out yet. who knows wp8 might be great.
as for windows 8, i think they should retain the current desktop ui as windows 7 is great. the touch interface should only be an option that can be turned on/off. admit it, the keyboard and mouse combo still is supreme if you really needs to get some serious work done. the touch interface for desktop is only good for kiosks or presentations.
the reason for the popularity of other OS alternatives is microsofts fault also. they started going into consoles and put less priority on games for windows. they are diminishing their biggest advantage over the other OSes on home use.. and now if they make windows 8 "touch only", they effectively killed gaming in PCs and i might as well move on to mac.
Where is innovation?
1. They advertise HTML5, Javascript etc as innovation feature, however, the same is possible on both Android and iOS. From my perspective Java is much more capable than any of these. It is object oriented and better suited for large projects.
2. Live applications = widgets on Android
3. There is nothing said about the framework and multitasking.
4. Windows will be a closed platform undoubtedly.
So far it looks like simply a promise and marketing show.
So Yea
I saw the videos and Wow, but then if everything was like in Microsoft Marketing Cuckooland we all be using fling cars and booking our holidays to Saturn directly from our courier file manager (does anyone remember courier?)
In the real world
Android is far more customizable than WM7, and yes probably tiles are nice and better than static icons, but widgets are even more powerful than tiles, hell, you can customize your own widgets in some cases (Check Maker Your Clock Application for example) or even use live wall papers to display info.
If you put your mind to it You can make your android phone to do whatever WM7 do and then some, same goes for ios, lots of things are doable in Android, the only thing needed is people interested and willing to code the right applications.
In WM7 and iOS, sorry, close source, not allowed.
When Win8 comes out and then I see it running in tablets and can compare with whatever version of Android or Chromium and whatever is out call me,
P.S. rest assured that neither Goggle nor Apple wont be seated doing nothing and waiting for MS to take their market share
P
this would make a better tablet with a dock than the transformer! you use you tablet with the same os as you laptops and desktops.
and a marketplace isn't needed. there are tons of sources for windows apps. it may be helpful for a noob, but I know where to get all my software... legally.
if this works well I can see windows taking over both iOS and android. especially if it's as "open" as windows on desktops are. no freaking having to work for root.
No wonder after watching M$ you are euphoric. Its simple social engeneering. Playing on emotions and expectations. The truth is more prosaic. Windows core idea was build on using mouse. MS tried tablets niche many times in the past but never suceeded. Do you imagine mouse with tablet?
This time it will be the same. Much hype will poooof quickly.
I dont consider using windows powered tab since I met android. In fact I have two various fujitsu tabs laying around collecting dust. I need windows to work but for everything else I use android because of easy of use.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I do like the Look of the Touch UI, but it's just a UI.. Surely that can be duplicated to some extent under Android. If not now defiantly in future releases?

[Q] Has anyone already news about Windows Phone 8?

Hey all,
As the title suggests, this is the question to you pros .
Are there any Infos already available?
I know it might be too early but asking can't harm anyone
If there are any, do you think it will be portable to our lovely HD2?

I extremely doubt it.
WP8 will almost certainly be only for dual core+ devices by the time is developed/released.
We are still in waiting for stable Mango release..... You are into WP8
we know it will be released with the windows 8 desktop platform, the problem is at what stage of the windows 8 desktops life, all we can say for sure is that they both will exist at the same time, so somewhere between 2012 -2014 more likely the towards the latter.
im actually quite liking this unified OS idea, lets just hope MS doesnt cut the balls of the desktop OS like its done with WP

Come on people, mango is not out yet... Windows 8 RC may become available for public testing this fall, but no promises... The current windows8 supposed versions are skinned w7 with some additional options that may or may not make it in the final release of w8. The tile UI is not available. WP8 is not even in the books right now, mango will be the one to look for. Mango on hd2 is rubbish compared to the mango released officially from Microsoft for developers that is working flawlesly. Forget that dual core crap too, those are single core processors designed to handle graphic as a separate process. Microsoft has an agreement to make the software upgradable across the board, so it will not limit any device as long as it meets the base requirements. This said by the time that is out, what we have now will be so outdated. HD2 will always be the best phone I have ever had (I have 4). All running different things. Not to say anything else, its time to let them to rest and only for testing stuff or even just let it rest in pice and be the best phone ever made for cross system platforms. HD7 is great and mango is flawless. Spend some $$$ and experience the real thing. You already had a taste of the Os. Let it go. Better things are coming.

Do you still use WM? If so why?

Just a friendly discussion, so my question is why do yous till use WM if you do, with Android, WP7 and IOS out their, why stick with WM?
cause i enjoy every minute i use my HD2 with WM-CHT2.0
for my WP7 is an incognita, can anybody please provide a link for WP7 secreenshots?

Android is for kids/teenagers
Reason 1 WM integrates flawlessly with my windows PC ,office ect..
Reason 2 WM has TOMTOM Satnav and it works flawlessly with my WM device just load the software and your ready to go .
The reasons could go on and on but i gave you my most important two
Unlike my daughter just purchased a iPhone 3gs loaded on TomTom and found out to my disgust that you need the car GPS Dock to make it work as integrated GPS don't work with the app (Don't get me started on iphone sh*t)
OS!!
still using WM 6.5/6.5x.

Oh ok cause you said look at it, I thought you meant looks, imo android does anything and everything but it has its flaws, iphone is nice and simple but a little too restrictive. And wp7 is hands down the best UI around imo, simple, clean and elegant, missing funtionality and support though at this stage. As for WM I think its a fine OS but too slow for my tastes and it seems like it never matured into full touch UI. Symbian is real functional but so damn slow and ugly UI.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
In my experiences. I love WM then another other OS and will keep in first place of my favorite list ever.
WM functions are very similar to Windows OS. You can do what ever you want, as a developer or as a user. If you are from Windows PC, then you won't be liking android, iOS or even WP7.
Android has good graphics and speed but it feels like a beta software. Cannot trust it.
WP7 is very simple and basic but Still lacks lots of things. I didn't expected MS will do such a bad thing. Better if they stood in WM interface itself.
iOS, I have no comments about it as I haven't used much.
To say in one line, android, WP7, iOS and etc (except WM of course) developers are trying to keep users in there custody!
This never happened in WM, users of it were very free to use, as if they made there own OS.
WM has something that you cannot express but feels in heart when using. Android is my second option though.
Thanks...
Best Regards

Because its a Win CE core which operates from 1x1 pixel tap (i.e stylus). Its same as a cursor present in PC. Later on, MS and HTC tried to make it better Touch Sensitive. Though it wasn't very successful because the core and kernel didn't match the latest hardware. If you know about VM in WM, you probably also knowing it doesn't have much space. Even though the physical memory (RAM) has enough space, multiple apps load slow and its because VM is lacking space. Thats the major fall in WM.

I learnt the Win32 programming model so that I could use the original Embedded Tools 3.0 to create native C++ ARM Windows Mobile 2002 programs.
It was a long hard slog, involving studying the shell "Hello World" program as created by the project wizard, and then trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Embedded C++ 4.0 came along later for WM2003. The accumulated skills could then be used later in Visual Studio, for creating Win32 PC programs, and being able to port applications from one platform to the other, in either direction!
Microsoft have made a total mess of the transfer to Phone 7, with the complete change of programming model, being one of the most crass moves they have ever pulled. Phone 7 was too little, far too late which allowed the opposition to run away with the advantage. Microsoft will never get that back.
Windows CE and Windows Mobile are still good solid operating systems, tried and tested, even if they are a little long in the tooth. Win32 programming may be considered very old hat these days, but the programs run like a bat out of hell.
Android is also pretty stable, being based on a Linux core, and it's improving, but to learn Android development means starting from scratch, almost from the "Hello World" example above. Do I really want to start all over again? Maybe, maƱana........ Fortunately, there is not much difference between C# and Java code, so the transition may not be that painful.
Update: Currently studying some of the stuff in the Android SDK........ At the "What the hell does this do?" stage again.
Windows Mobile lives on as Windows Embedded Handheld, but this is now primarily for line of business devices.
Have look at the current WinMo devices sold by Expansys here in the UK
Update: WinMo 6.x has been dropped as a separate category, you have to specifically search for Windows Mobile. There is the HD2/HD2 Mini and some rather expensive near indestructible rubber armoured devices.
How long before HTC drops the HD2?
I like WM because of it's flexibility, the fact that it's an open platform with lots of freeware and it's ability to function without a Google, Itunes or whatever account. You buy it, charge the battery, put in a sim card and there you go. No activation no nothing. That's simply the way it should be. Oh and by the way: Call me crazy but I actually like the UI of WM. It always offers multiple ways to do something. And lots of possibilities to customize your device of course.
i recently traded in my touch pro2 for the sensation...i didn't give up on wm, but microsoft did...i loved that platform...so versatile yet so misunderstood...
this android platform ain't too shabby tho...it's not wm but not too shabby indeed...
my signature pic says it all.....
