There was a locked thread in development where someone asked if it would work. A lot of people replied (obviously without even knowing what they are talking about) that it wouldn't work.
it DOES work on the myTouch 3G's - I just did it on one.
It works on any android phone - but the current apk implementation flashes the 1.4 cyanogen recovery image so it only works on phones that image will boot (i.e. the HTC Dream, or the Sapphire... etc)
It's way easier to apply that than it is to apply the nbh downgrade... etc.
Cool
I posted the question in a wrong area im glad someone with a mytouch tried it i bricked my first mytouch
Worked
This worked for me also I am now on CyanogenMod v3.9.11.2 and it works very well.
TY Cyanogen!
ed
Works...but hesitant
This definitely works on the MT3G just tried it...whew glad it worked Still extremely hesitant on flashing new rom though. Dont know why even though I have a rooted G1. Perhaps I just love this phone too much to f*#$ it up

Now that I think about it...If you just use this to get the recov img the MT3G still has the "perfected" spl. So exactly will this allow you to flash any new ROMs? That is why the "goldcard" was used to trick it and flash to an earlier "non-perfected" spl which would then allow you to flash ROMs updated radio etc etc etc. Shed any light on this?
I know there can be risks when doing any kind of modding/hacking. What is the main risk with rooting the MT3G? Is it mainly an issue with the battery falling out or running out of juice? Or is the rooting process invasive enough (i know it is root = can touch everything) or unstable enough that there is a relatively high probability of an issue running the canned procedure?
I have my phone, love it, my wife would kill me if I wrecked it. I just want to know how likely I am to end up with a brick using this method.
Also a question to understand this procedure, if I run the apk and reboot normally then there is no lasting root, correct? I have to go into the recovery mode and flash over a new rooted rom for root to become permanent? Does this actually change the SPL on the MT3G, does it preserve the ability to flash other roms at any time in the future? I want to know if this is a one time open up your phone for rooting or if after I do this will I always have root.
Sorry for all the questions, but I have been lurking around and haven't found definitive answers to these questions. Thanks!
Dave
Dave, Ive used this method. However if you didnt notice in my previous post...the spl does NOT change. Which is why I questioned the ability to flash any ROMs. The more "complicated" method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547133) requires a "goldcard" with an earlier version of the spl. Which I believe allows flashing to occur.
Yeah, I saw your post after I posted. I think this is great for a simple root I am thinking to have future rooting I will need the goldcard method anyway.
It would seem that this method should be able to modify the SPL since it is able to run as root, maybe not though...
I did mine last night and now doing my wifes MT3G and I was comparing cyanogen's vs stock and its night and day...no loading screen issues with cyan's build and keyboard response got better too...
LOL yeah Ii was thinking about the SPL if we can change it out? I kinda want to call my phone semi-rooted
so anyone flash a new spl/radio using this one click root? success? or no?

Just did it...1.33.2005/ also S-off. this is definitely legit and makes things a hell of a lot more easier than all those damn adb commands. Dont get me wrong at all I do appreciate all the work that was done by Haykuro and the other boys because without them Im sure this wouldnt be possible. Anywho...it works.
Okay. As newb as one can get with phone mods, etc. But it actually works. I dont know what the exact benefits of it are but I am running... Mod version CyanogenMod-3.9.11.2 per about phone. All my downloads are gone but it worked. I dont know what the difference/any limitations is for down the road, in comparison to the gold card method (I hope none), with this type of root but hey it actually worked and I would have kick my own a$$ if I bricked my phone. Thanks to folks who found this way and are their any "rooted" differences now that I am on cfw using this method for say updating to cyanogens 4.0 eventual release?
Alright, I took the plunge and it worked flawlessly!
I use the 1 click install via the market app called Recovery Flasher. I installed CyanogenMod 4.0.1 Stable. Zoom zoom zoom...
I thought I may have had an issue when I rebooted after flashing since it sat at the MyTouch 3G splash for a ton longer than normal. I had read it was normal for the first boot to take longer so I didn't freak out and pull the battery. I just let it come up and now I couldn't be happier.
If I remember reading correctly CyanogenMod has the fix for the root vulnerability used in this hack to root plugged. So, now that I have a rooted ROM and recovery 1.4 will I ever need to worry about having the dreaded "Perfect SPL?"
so easy a caveman could do it! a thousand times, thank you.
so its confirmed you can FLASH a different SPL with no problem ? cuz if so im gettin a mytouch ! lol
go for it

go to town boss...now i need to get out of the stupid hero boot loop.
Thanks. I also took a chance since I got my Touch for free by Timo mistake. Couldn't resist. Aside a few apk not able to install everything works fine. Noob question, can I now format sd card?
Oh, thanks for Quick Office.
In approximately a week, I plan on rooting my phone. Unfortunately for now, I must wait for the 2gb kingston microsd that I ordered to arrive.
I have spent numerous weeks browsing xda and other sites to try and understand how to root as I am a newbie in this field. I would like to verify a few things though.
How I will root:
It is assumed that I follow unlockr's fender/1.2 guide that was posted on the 13th of March and use the files listed.
However, a few things boggle me.
First of all, shouldn't I backup the rom with nandroid? or does using a goldcard somehow been I can't do so? I'm not sure of how that works.
Second, my primary intention regarding rooting the phone is so that I may use wifi tethering periodically when I'm at a hotel that charges an arm or a leg for using their internet. A comment on the unlockr site shows that one rooter ran into a "no netfilter found" type error. Considering there is no CM rom for this specific phone yet, what would be the solution to this? Preferably, I assume that android-wifi-tether is the app that I would want to use.
Last of all, under the assumption that mytouch 1.2 users are given the android 2.1 OTA in the future: How would a root phone user get this? I haven't quite understood whether or not android is physically built in or part of the rom itself or separate. Would I either need to somehow find a way of manually upgrading 1.6 to 2.1 at a later time or would I simply swap out the "stock fender rom w/ root access" with a newer version when the time comes? Obviously this confuses me xD
I can't think of any other questions at the moment to ask, but if there is any additional advice anyone can offer: I would be delighted to be informed.
Whatever you do don't follow the instructions from the Unlockr -- I couldn't use my phone for an entire day. I have a Fender and there was a another thread here that I was super helpful. I will see if I can dig it up.

The Unlokr's guide worked perfectly for me. Just because you can't follow instructions doesn't mean other people can't.
The unlockr's guide also worked for me. I had an issue making gold card, but that was because I overlooked something and nothing in regards to the guide.
Follow the directions word for word and you will be fine. It may seem a little intimidating at first but in the end it's not complicated. Took me longer to make the gold card than to get root.
Good luck!

Well it wasn't until I found this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=622530
And I downloaded the SAPPIMG 2010 SPL that it worked and before I realized that I needed to reflash the SPL and Radio after flashing ROM (which aren't on that site but in that thread).
From flashing and unlocking in WinMo to this is a learning curve for people that don't troll boards proving how neat-o they are.
From what I had read before, when unlockr made the guide specifically for the 1.2/fender: he had updated the sappimg with the appropriate one. In theory that means the one you mentioned and his should in theory now be the same. correct?
Could i get a second opinion on the part specifically about reflashing spl & radio after flashing rom? As zmattmanz states, "Once it loads click reboot and you are all set!" in the guide does indeed conflict with "reboot into fastboot
back out of update when it asks and flash STOCK radio and SPL back, now reboot".
My question regarding nandroid and OTA had already been answered elsewhere so those two are nullified. However, could I get info on people's attempts to use android-wifi-tether on the rooted fender/1.2 since I'm assuming it doesn't have netfilter?
EDIT: actually after having taken a second glance at the two guides: It looks like unlockr doesn't downgrade but rather just uses the stock radio/spl mid-way through while the xda guide downgrades then requires reverting to stock at the end. right?

Tethering does not work as you mentioned because netfilter is not included with the current kernel. As I currently understand it, HTC is in violation of the GPL for not releasing the kernel from the new MyTouch 3G/1.2 (this meaning tethering would work. I also believe that more custom ROMS would be available when/if HTC releases the new kernel)
As to your edit, just stick with the Unlockr guide. Once you finish flashing the 'Custom Fender w/ Root Access' ROM then you are done. Once you reboot it may take a while for it to load so give it some time.

Help...
Well I basically don't know where I am right now
Ive been researching how to mod a My-touch 3G for a long time and im a first time rooter
I'm Trying to get Cyanogen Mod 5.07 Hopefully but... I followed the directions at the Unlockr website not knowing it had different recovery than the ones needed for a CyangenMod
I got mixed up with multiple guides about rooting my phone in the first place and there are SO MANY different things to install...
Well I got my MT3G BACK to CupCake Android 1.5... i did the unroot process
But the wierd thing is that I cant seem to ROOT IT? FUNNY?
I dont know whats wrong but I followed the step and video at unlockr website and it just doesnt seem to work
and tried the androidandme site and their guide doesnt work for me too
Ive formatted my sd and did a factory reset too
I really want Cyangen 5.07 but it seems too complicated for me and I dont want to end up like before?
Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
radio 2.22.23.02

Just understand one thing: Goldcard avoids check of CustomerID.
ROM has CIDs, your phone has CID. If phone-CID is in ROM CIDs list - you can flash without goldcard. This means official ROM for your phone. If you have T-Mobile MyTouch 3G (old version) - you can use only COC10 ROM or update to Android 1.6 (i forgot full name), i repeat - without goldcard.
If you have MT3G v1.2 - you must use goldcard, as unroot-method is using some special ROMs with other CIDs (non T-Mobile). Or use official ROMs without gc.

Its got a lot more than just ROMs, but also kernels, radios, guides, and other tools. Some stuff are custom or modded, some are stock tools that developers and others will find useful.
Please help -- how to flash this new stock gingerbread rom to a rooted g2
I have a rooted G2 running CM7, but the gps is totally dead. I'm too much of a noob to flash a new radio, which I think would do the trick. Flashing this stock gingerbread rom seems like the perfect solution because it includes an updated radio and i am just sure it will fix the gps problem.
I bought the phone rooted and I know how to flash new rooted roms through clockwork (so easy), but I have absolutely no idea how to flash a rom like this that updates everything.
I'm sure this question has been asked here before, but can someone just point me to a step-by-step instructions about how to flash this particular stock gingerbread rom to a g2 that is rooted and has clockwork installed?
Thanks~! This is my first post.

Flashing a radio is easy. Just follow the steps in the radio thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809
I know the second method (fastboot and radio.img files) is supposed to be safer. But that looks like it might be over your head, and you need the Eng Hboot to do it.
Flashing a ROM is easy, too. Just move the file to your SD card, and flash from ROM Manager. You will see an option "Install ROM from SD Card". Browse to the file, and the rest is the same as if you downloaded the ROM using ROM Manager.
Thanks, but a few more questions . . .

Thanks for the reply! I think you are underestimating how new I am to this, though. My question is really this: does it matter, when flashing the new gingerbread rom for g2 that just came out, that the rom is not just a rom, but also a radio and everything else? it is titled in the "PC10IMG" form, which seems to me, from reading other threads, to be a special thing.
[full title: PC10IMG_Vision_Gingerbread_S_TMOUS_2.13.531.8_Radio_12.52.60.25_26.08.04.30_M3_release_188635_signed]
also, would you recommend that i wipe stuff before flashing? when the person who flashed my phone with me last time did it, he wiped dalvik cache and two others (can't remember which, or where he found them in recovery), and user data as well. but if you go to do it within clockwork, it doesn't ask you to do that, does it? again, i'm sure there is a thread about this somewhere.

well, it's a bit complicate.
supposedly the rom will return your phone to a totally stock state, which will give you the new radio etc, but you will not have root - this was already confirmed. One other forum member mentioned that he flashed the rom and did not loose S-OFF, which is a controversy...
update: lol, dude having CM on your phone means you already have clockwork installed. you just need the /system part of the leak and it's available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074852
Really all he needs to do is run vision efs wipe. This been gone over a million times. CM + gps broke = needing efs wipe. No need to get into radios and all that just yet.

you can solve your gps issues by following two basics:
1. match libs in /system/libs with your radio version,
2. wipe two partitions like it is explained here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1028405
You don't need the new rom, though - it still has the 2 muted seconds when receiving an incoming call - for me that is the no go.

I thought you were talking about the version of the leak that is mentioned in the last post (#10) and also mentioned above in post #4, which is pre-rooted. Thats the one you want. Flash from ROM Manager.
If you are talking about flashing this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074391
This is the official ROM, and as stated in the previous post, you will lose root. So you probably want to avoid this.
PC10IMG.ZIP files are flashable from Hboot (CWM not required). But since you have Clockwork, I believe you can flash any ROM or patch, as long as its a ZIP file. Its safer to flash from CWM anyway, so avoid Hboot for flashing ROMs.
Not positive, but I think you can keep your data since you are going between similar ROMs (Gingerbread, non-Sense). Wiping dalvik and cache are advisable. Not doing so when switching ROMs can lead to random bugs, and there is no real reason to not wipe them. You can wipe dalvik and cache in recovery. If you want to wipe data, you can also do that in recovery, under "advanced". But you will lose all your user data.
If you flash from ROM Manager, it will ask if you want to wipe. But I've never been clear on what all exactly is wiped (dalvik, cache, data). It might be all 3 of those.
Sorry, I've just stated a bunch of things I'm not completely sure about. So hopefully somebody else can confirm these.
The good news is, do a backup of your current ROM in ROM Manager before you flash anything, and if you screw up anything, you can just go into recovery and load your backup.
please help -- do not want to brick

I actually would prefer this to flashing a version of this rom that someone else has extracted/altered, however little. My fear is two things:
1 -- Will it brick my phone to flash a PCIMG file? (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838484)
2 -- what do I have to do differently to flash a PCIMG file other than what I normally would do in clockwork to flash another rom (for example a CM rom)
THANKS!

I have tried that, to no avail. I see others who have tried that and failed, and things seem to get tricky after that. I agree, I would rather avoid the nitty gritty stuff.
So I am devastated to see that there is no lock animation =(. That was something I was really looking forward to, despite the insignificance.

THANKS!

My opinion, you're better off flashing the rooted ROM. If you flash the official PC10IMG.ZIP, you will lose root, and not be able to get it back without downgrading (negating the purpose of flashing the official ROM in the first place).
Are you worried about malicious, or accidentally harmful modifications to the ROM (in the rooted version of the leak)? I don't worry much about ROMs for reputable developers. But admittedly, I don't know anything about that user that posted the rooted version of the leak.
In response to your questions:
1) As the thread you posted indicates, its safer not to flash those files unless you know exactly what you are doing.
2) I think you can flash from Clockwork. But as I said, if you aren't sure what you are doing, its not a good idea. You will lose root, and I think some people have also gotten S-On by flashing the official ROMs also. I which case, you may be pretty screwed (as far as getting root), since you can't flash other ROMs with S-On.
Alright so I've reading through all sorts of different forums and feel lost and exactly what to do. I downloaded the official 2.3 update ROM for the G2 that Football had released off of a mirrored site from my phone's browser then renamed it PC10IMG and moved to the root of the SD card. I then did the whole volume down + power button to load the zip but for some reason it says:
VISION PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.82.0000
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot

I have no idea what to do or anything so help would be much appreciated. Now I would post this in that forum but because I just recently joined this site it will not allow me to do so. So, yea. Thanks.

Make sure it is named PC10IMG.zip and not PC10IMG.zip.zip
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA Premium App
So I checked it out and it's named PC10IMG.zip so I don't know what could be wrong. I find it weird that I'm the only one having this problem.
Can someone give me some advice please, my version of GB (Ginger-Yoshi) is doing major battery drain, so I would like to downgrade to Froyo - how do I do this without going back to stock....or should I go back to stock first?
Thanks.
PS - I did search XDA, but I am not doing well on search results, I'm sure this is common and has been covered, but I can't find it.
Wipe everything, flash your froyo rom and you are fine ...
yeah, I tried that...boot loop which is why I started this thread....Thanks for responding.
I was able to re-install my GB build to reboot my phone, so I figured I had to downgrade, I do know how to return to stock, but it's such a PITA to load everything over....
Seems to me, that you have installed the 1.33.0013d / 2.22.28.xx combo ...
In that case, you need a special kernel for your froyo rom, otherwise you need to install a different SPL. For this, you would like to read the instructions here
