I already fixed this, posting it in case it helps someone else (or I forget next time it happens).
Short version: If your touch won't turn on, check if any of the other buttons are stuck down.
My touch just wouldn't turn on. I tried pulling the battery. Tried all the possible startup buttons like going into the bootloader. Nothing.
It would charge through USB, but that was it. Power button seemed broken.
It was the volume slider. I've had issues with the volume randomly turning itself down. The volume slider is starting to die. And apparently if the volume switch is in just the wrong place, the phone will refuse to turn on. Moving the volume slider up and down then trying to turn it on again fixed it.
Maybe this will help someone else.
glad to hear it but next time you can just update your other thread

Hi, first time posting! so hello everyone 8)
I got xda exec, i had this problem with the first rom and the latest one too. For some random reason when my phone comes out of standby sometimes my backlight is off. i struggle to see my screen and when i check my backlight settings (brightness level) "on battery" its set to off on the slider. When i set it higher my backlight works. Also my backlight button does not respond when this happens. It just randomly happens but im starting to notice it more and more. Any ideas peeps
Try:
1- pressing the button beside the volume slider.
or
2 - pressing and holding the power button.
Hope that helps

thanks but i tried both, doesnt work. the only way it comes back is by going to backlight settings. Is there a file that could be corrupt that stores the information about the backlight settings?
Is the box "turn on backlight when a buttonis pressed or the screen is tapped"?
Other than that i've not got a clue. Someone who knows a bit more? any ideas?

yeah thats ticked. the only way i get the back light to work when this happens is pushing the slider up, the one in the battery settings
seems real odd.
If noone else has a suggestion a hard reset might help, dont know if you've tried that yet. If you do this dont forget to back up everything.

Hi,
I think it really is the POWER button: if I press and hold it for a few seconds, the slider goes to zero and the light goes off. Press and hold again restores the old situation.

My wife's Magician did this sometimes too.
Turned out that in her case it was because when you hold down the power button to turn the phone off (for a second or two) it doesn't actually turn the phone off, just the backlight. (Of course it all goes dark, so it looks like the phone is off if you don't check too closely.)
Then when you press the power button to turn it on again (after it's timed out and turned itself off), there's obviously still no backlight...
May not be your problem, but give it a check...
In nearly three months, I've had this happen perhaps four times. My device has the "on-battery" backlight set at one notch, to save the most power, and I guess something must just move it that one notch down to off.
So far there's been no uniform circumstance, other than it's guaranteed to happen at night under low street or room lighting so that I can't see the screen to get to and re-adjust the setting.
A hard reset doesn't help. I've reset numerous times with different ROM versions and had the problem reappear - but very infrequently as I said.

I've had this a few times. I've had to hold the power button in for a few seconds to get the light back.
i had the same problem, just comed up a week or so. not changed any settings either.. wierd bug
Hi guys, I hope I can type this coherently.
I have a g3 wizard that I have flashed many times over the last year or so. Lately the power button has stopped working. I can get the phone to turn on by plugging it in, and then holding in the camera/voice buttons and THEN hitting the power button. It goes into the rainbow screen, and I just soft reset via the hole on the side. At that point it is on and running fine, but the power button does nothing.
The power button does nothing at all unless I plug the phone in, and then only if I go to bootloader. It seems to work just fine to do that-which is what is stumping me. I thought the button was just broken. The charge/battery lights do come on.
For now I have it set to never turn off, so I try to make sure it doesn't run too low. The battery life seems ok. Any tips? I want to be able to put the phone to sleep again...
thanks
Basically, it is as if the top volume button is held down, and the volume is continuously going up on my HD, even when I try to turn it down, it shoots back up again, and is stuck on the volume screen. Sometimes, if I turn it down to silent, it will stay silent for a few seconds, then the volume goes up again and keeps going up.
Really annoying as it means the phone is basically unusable as I'm pretty much always trapped in the volume screen!
Any ideas?
I would suppose that a button is stuck!
Take of the back cover and take a good look at the buttons to see if anything could be wrong!

That's what I thought, but it looks fine to me
I had the same problem as you but I then realize that when I was putting down the volume while in a conversation was my face pressing the screen and increasing again the volume...could it be your same problem?

Nope, because it happens if I don't touch the phone and just leave it on the table
Have you tried a hard reset?
Do a backup first.
Turn off the phone. If you can't pull the battery out.
Hold the volume up + down at the same time then press the power on button for about 1 second. Let go of the power button while keeping the volume up and down still pressed down.
You should see a blue / green / red screen then just follow the instructions on screen.
If this doesn't solve your problem then most likely something is keeping your volume up button depressed internally. Take it back for repair...
The volume slider malfunctioning is a big one on HTC devices known issues. I've had the same problem with my elf....and I've seen plenty that do too. Your best bet would be to take it to an authorized service rep. Sucks I know
Try to remove the cover and use it... the pressing mechanism is on the cover...

Tried that, still the same problem.
I'm going to try a hard reset today, if I still get the problem, going to ask Orange to replace it. I wonder if they'll let me pick another phone, I'm getting a bit fed up with the HD!
I have the same problem, it occurs randomly and I discovered that if I quickly press the power button to stand by the phone and press it again to exit from stand by, the volume bug disappears and phone starts working well again. I thought it was a software bug but I still have it on 1.19. It rarely happens now on 1.13 was more frequent.
Guys, I booted my Nexus 4 in Safe mode, but still notice that whenever I press the power button to turn the screen off it comes back again. I have to do this a few times before it turns off. It doesn't do this all the time, but more so rather than not.
Another issue I have is that sometimes when I long press the power button the options to silence, vibrate and shutdown do not come on.
I'm thinking the first issue is hardware related, but with that second issue it makes me think that it's software related. Could someone shed some light on this?
Thank you.
As title states, restarted phone after updating and the power/volume buttons stopped working. I already requested an RMA but am curious as to anyone who has had a similar issue know of a way to solve/fix it. Only way I was able to get the phone out of the black screen was to do the O gesture to open the camera (Happy I had that enabled). I can currently use the phone but I am worried to let it die.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: I am more worried that if I were to get a replacement that this will just happen again and would then be stuck with it. Am I wrong to be worried?
I have just experienced this issue. Volume and power buttons don't work. What is going on?!?!? What did you end up doing sylv?
Same thing happened to me yesterday. It's a software issue, a simple reboot will fix it.
But how can you reboot without a button, you ask?
Go to settings -> Utilities-> Scheduled power on/off and set it to shutdown by itself. After it shuts down you'll be able to press the power button to turn it on.
