I am not sure if it was discussed earlier, but is dual boot on these phones even an option?? If so, it will be more challenging and a lot more fun things to do.....
I think there have been a couple of anroid devs port linux dual boot partitions. The biggest issue to over come with it is space...our paritions are not large at all. I think for the Debian boots they are mounting the SDcard....
I read about some guy that setup up to dual boot 2 different roms.
He had one set up on the /system partition and the other on /data, no idea how he did it but I read he was successful.
I can only imagine the inevitable lag, numerous FC's and other issues that would arise simply because the processor would be maxed. If you've got a decent sized SD card, that may alleviate, but I'd think you'd probably want to run the slimmest, sleekest ROM on your system partition as possible. It'd definitely be interesting..

Hi guys, sorry if this is a dumb question but havent had my coffee yet.
Im just wondering if anybody knew of any development going on to be able to flash WP7 from SD crad via MAGLDR?
I think this owuld be a great addition.
I'm at work at the moment and was going to flash WP7 as im bored and realised I didnt bring my USB cable
Since WP7 format your SD during installation process, I think it's impossible ^^

Yeah, the way wp7 uses the sd card would make it very difficult to find a way to make it work.... there's probably a better chance of them figuring out a way to boot wp7 directly from SD (which given the fact that wp7 uses the sd as main memory anyways, performance would probably be the same with a good sd card if the figured out how to do this.... I would love to have android on NAND so I can use clockwork, but I don't want to give up the ability to boot wp7... especially after reading about the multitasking ability that is going to be added with an update... their doing multitasking like WebOS did it, with playing card looking screens that you can scroll through... it looks great)
Not really true.
WP7 only formats your card if it hasnt already been formatted. When ive been trying/testing dual boot in past, I had a pre-formatted WP7 card with WP7 partitions already on and after flashing it didnt format. Well unless im not remembering correctly and dreamt it.
So its probably just a matter of magldr support for it. Unless its a limitation of only been able to perform the partitioing via PC-DFT/USB-MAGLDR flasher.
I do agree though, the coming possibility of running WP7 from SD would be great. Its bit like when we first got Android (me back on Blackstone), ie have your secondary OS on card and primary on NAND. I slowly started to use Android more and more and then just started booting into it by default either manually or via bootloader, then eventually on NAND. I cant see myself getting rid of Android for WP7 any time soon but it would be cool to be able to play with it without having to resort to putting Android back on card.

You had indeed curious dreams...
Installed more than 10 times WP7 and always a SD format...on all roms...
Furthermore it's clearly stated in most of cooked roms and installation tutos topics

Fook knows then, Im sure I managed to use a pre-prepared card without it flashing it at some point, Ill have a go later and see if I can replicate what I did.
Anyway, this doesnt really make a difference because im sure somebody could come up with a modded version that bypasses SD format/check etc.
Will just have to wait and see.
IMO flashing without formatting would be awesome especially to avoid reinstalling apps and reconfigurating system everytime :/
Let's be patient...
First time posting after months of following all the great how-to guides on here, this is an awesome community and I'm hoping someone can help me.
I used this guide to set up dual boot so I could run rooted stock 1.2 and Divine_Madcat's Honeycomb Hybrid RC1 SDK port. Everything about it works perfectly, I'm able to boot each of them without any issues, I just can't get my SD card working in HC. I'd really like to use Honeycomb as my daily driver, but the biggest thing preventing me from keeping HC installed is my inability to get my SD card mounted. I tried replacing my uRamdisk file with racks modified one, both by mounting /system and incorporating it into a new zipped ROM file, and neither of these methods work. I'm pretty sure it's because of my dual boot setup, but I don't know how to go about rectifying it. Is it possible to get it working? Or does the fact that I'm dual booting make it difficult/impossible to mount my SD card?

Are you running HC on primary or secondary boot?
Primary boot.

You shouldn't be mounting system. You should be mounting /boot. Well, you could use Samuelhalffs app to mount the boot partition to your PC and then just copy over the new uRamdisk. Make sure you back up the previous just in case.

Whoops, I misspoke, I meant to say boot instead of system. I'm using Root Explorer, copying your version of uRamdisk, mounting /boot (assuming / is boot) and pasting/replacing the original uRamdisk. It copies just fine, replaces the original, until I restart my Nook, then when I look in /boot it somehow replaces itself with the original again. Not sure why.
Ok, I have run this install method 2x today http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957&highlight=verygreen+sd+bootable *VeryGreen*
Now, I am not new to rooting but haven't been keeping up with my nook as I passed it on. Went from CM7 stable to MIUI couldnt' stand the market issues and didn't want ot deal with removing the up dater..blah blah blah ok enough of that
I have followed the instructions and was have booted CM fine but each time I look at my SD card I only have the one partition. Should I be partitioning it myself before doing the steps metitioned or should the install make the partions for me then I just write the FAT or FAT32 (<---top of my head) myself post install.
I wanted a dual boot but figured I would wait for CM9 to come out and wanted to test the SD install. Also, the system seems laggy and I would attribute that to the card i'm using but was also wondering if maybe it was from the partitions? I believe the card is only showing 120 mb used and 14 unused.
Thanks, for any help I have been working on this for 3 days different scenerios and used searches but I get so many dated threads.

If you are using windows you will only see the first partition.

That would be why, hadn't thought about that but was going to into partitioning i myself this evening in linux either would have seen this or been worse for the wear. Thanks, seems it's still not running as smooth and I am thinking it' the card, I'll just got with old faithful for now and work on it more after NYE have a trip coming up and would rather have it in state I know works.
Cheers
I apologize if this isn't in the correct forum. I wasn't sure since it's dealing with two dif os's.
Anyways, my question is Can I access files on the android jellybean partition from inside of wp7? I would like to be able to play movies, look at pics in wp7 that are in the android partition.
Also, what about vice versa? One last question. Wp7 seems to run very quickly, but Android seems to run pretty slowly. I assume its because it's running from the SD card. Is there any way that can be sped up to run at normal (fast) speed?
--- edit:
is it possible to put android on the nand, and wp7 on the sd so that the android os would be faster?
So.
Yes, you can access files from FAT partition on WP7. Few file explorers allow you to do that, just have a look at them and check if Storage Card folder works. They also allow you to watch videos, view images and play music, but forget about playlist support, subtitles or anything complicated. We don't have software to do that yet.
Vice versa is not possible since WP7 uses its own file system which Android can't see nor use.
Android will always run slower because it's an unoptimized piece of sh- I mean software. But you can try ROMs which take advantage of EXT4 partitions using NativeSD method - these are noticeable faster, no more waiting for minutes for apps to launch. You can also overclock CPU and use higher read ahead value for SD card (SD Speed Increase from Market).
Putting Android on NAND and WP7 on SD is not yet possible. It might be when Magldr 2.0 will be released (and it won't be really that anyway), but we don't know when.
thank you
thanks for the detailed and thorough explanation. i see that you are also using a dual boot. how slow/fast does your paranoidjellybean operate? i'm going to look into ext 4 and cpu boosts. i guess i will have to reinstall/delete everything in my android partition to do an ext 4? and i guess if i go ext 4 wp7 won't be able to read it? i'm going to look into it. i will update this with whatever info i find.

I'm going to try and use the roms you name in your signature area that you are using, and see if it works any better. what sd card are you using? I'm using a micro center micro sd class 6 16gb one. i'm getting a 8000ffff error in this wp7 rom when trying to get something from marketplace, and the droid is too slow. going to try the ext method for the droid. (can't dl apps on droid either!) so i will post what happens here.

ok, i'm thoroughly confused by these instructions (somewhat vague in parts ) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869673 Is there a video tutorial where it is shown what to do step by step to get a native sd setup for a dual booth with android sd and wp7? Do I just do it the same way I did before (install wp7, then reset / repartition, but instead of using fat32 i make a fat32 (how big) and an ext4 (or 2?) and which comes first (the fat or the ext) ? Afterwards, ALL partitions are primary?
i found this info for installing ext4. but do i create the ext4 BEFORE or AFTER i install WP7 ?
I'd say Paranoid JB is pretty fast using NativeSD (EXT) method. You will need to create an EXT partition first, but keep a FAT partition, because on EXT the ROM will keep only its own data and apps, the rest is still on FAT (just like now, but instead of data.ext and system.ext in ICS folder there is a partition just for those). Windows Phone 7 will not be able to read content of EXT partition, but it will not be needed, since there won't be anything worth looking at and all media files you will still keep on FAT. You will also have to make a backup of everything on your FAT partition because it will be lost, and fresh install will be necessary. You might want to backup your applications with Titanium Backup though.
For more information on partitioning please visit NativeSD thread.
I'm using a 8GB Transcend Class 4 card with 4GB FAT, 1GB EXT and rest (2.4GB) WP7FS. I don't have any errors with downloading apps on neither WP7 nor Android. Are you sure you entered that special code for Marketplace and logged into Google account on Droid?
furthermore
actually, i installed the hd20 rom you're using and had no problems with marketplace. at this point i have hd20 wp7 set up, activated, and working. i'm just trying to understand some of the more advanced information in the forums about setting up the ext4. i found some very technical instructions (edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=534714 ) for setting up an ext2 with gparted via dos then upgrading it to ext4. i don't know if that will mess up the wp7 partition, and if i should have done this before i installed wp7.
i had already read the nativesd thread, and the extended threads from it. i'm afraid i'm just not knowledgeable enough currently to fill in the gaps of information i find in a lot of the instructions. but i'm not giving up.

this has gotten way off the original topic so I've started a new thread with a diferent topic here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31356468#post31356468
The dual boot 6 thread says it creates a secure micro SD partition but Its only for the 128gb devices. I have the 240gb device and I'm wondering if there is another way to make a partition like that.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure what you mean. Do you want to have a split SD partition or reformat the internal "SD card" (storage)?
I want to create a new separate partition one that would not be wiped when you format data. In the dual boot thread it says that it creates a new partition so there is a way I'm just wondering how to do it. Unfortunately the dual boot only works on 128gb device I got the 240...

I'm not sure if this is easily possible due to how the super partition works. Unfortunately, this is out of my knowledge. There are ways of repartitioning your device but I'm not sure how it plays together with encryption
I found a guide for doing it but i cant because i need a twrp that has the commands to create or modify partition sizes. I have some knowledge about how to do it because i used to play with linux alot when i was younger. I know how to do it but im worried about encryption & whatever else that i dont know. All i know is they figured out how with the dualsix, I sent him a pm asking how hopefully it was him who compiled the scripts & knows exactly what to do. I really appreciate you taking the time to try to help. I love XDA & its members everyone is quick to try and help and there is not very many people who talk **** and act disrespectful. Thanks for being one of those awesome people!
