I've searched a long time for this and can't find the new marketplace app that gives you the option of installing apps to SD card instead of only device.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
Thank you.
Anyone please?
im confused, are you trying to install market place to SD card instead of device or are you trying to make sure the apps you download from marketplace are installed to SD card
If its the second one, open up marketplace, then at the bottom is menu, click on that then settings, in there it asks for the default place to install apps.

Sorry for the confusion, yes it is the second one. Thanks, I followed your suggestion. I'm sorted. Really appreciate the help.

I have the latest Marketplace installed but it still installs to device memory despite settings set to storage card. I have tried a few apps and none installed to the card - only one prompted an error saying it could not install to the card: Microsoft My Phone.
Anyone experiencing the same issue? Thx
On the latest Marketplace I installed, you can go into the menu under "settings" and set the default download location to "/Storage Card". Tried a couple downloads and it works for me.
Note that it won't give you the option where to download when you select a cab, it just defaults to that location.
Just curious, which downloads have you tried?

I have downloaded the following from WM, directly to storage card:
Aloqa (but I disabled this after it kept freezing up my TP2)
IMDB
All Mobile Mines
Good luck.
Are you sure you have the latest version? I kept getting a message that I did have the latest version but had no option to install on storage card. I deleted market place with remove programs funtion and then went and reinstalled it. I then got the newest version which has the options to where you install stuff.

I couldn't find IMDB on the list, but I upgraded my All Mobile Mines from Marketplace and it installed to storage card. Looks like some apps only install to device memory - the lack of any prompting or notice is kinda annoying.

Mesquire,
You are correct and I was mistaken -- I apparently downloaded IMDB from elsewhere. I forgot the name of the 3rd app that I downloaded from WM to storage card.
I am glad you were able to download at least some apps to storage card. It is weird that some apps download correctly (to storage card) and some don't. I doubt that WM is advanced enough to disable storage-card-downloads on those apps which need to be installed to main memory, so I guess we'll just have to live with this glitch. Again, good luck.
Hi,
First post so please be gentle. I've got a Lg GT540 running 1.6 and wanted to install a couple of apps onto the phone internal memory, so I got the apk files onto my desktop and connected the phone up via usb and could not and have not been able to copy these files onto the internal memory. In fact the phone does not come up as a drive or anything and copying the files onto the sd card leaves them stuck there and not being installed.( Mainly the astro file manger app.)
I then considered upgrading the phone to 2.1 via the LG site and downloaded LG suite etc and all was going well until the process stopped at 4% upgrade and requested I disconnect from pc, remove battery etc etc. I tried to follow that procedure 3 times and it still failed.
Not beaten I then found some stuff online to enable me to reflash to 2.2 (Modaco) and started that process. One of the first things it required me to do was start the phone in Fastboot mode by holding the camera button down whilst powering up. THe phone stubbornly refused to go into Fast boot.
Sooo, How do I get to copy Astro onto the internal memory so I can do what I want to and/or how can I upgrade to 2.2/
Firstly when you try to get into fastboot it wont work until you install a fastboot kdz.
This will allow you to flash roms onto ur phone.
I've made a video on a "how to" its in the general, look trought the pages or visit www.YouTube/user/tech2tuts
There's also a video on how to install android 2.3 swiftdroid. Its on the same channel in the favorites.
But beware u will lose all you apps unfortunately. Unless you get astro file manager or titanium back up which requires your phone to be rooted.

Hi Chris, Thank you for the link to the demo and I will need to look at that with a view to implementing. No doubt I'll be asking for some assistance during the process.
However I'm still at a loss with not being able to install apps directly onto the phone memory and would appreciate some pointers on that. I have acess to a desktop running XP and a laptop running Windows 7.
Thanks in advance.
You probly cant install apps due to lack of internal memory. Bye install the Kdz it will enable over 230mb of internal , along with apps to sd, so no need for use of internal.
unable to install apps
Thanks again, but phone showing 3.6 gb avaiable on sd card and 120mb available on internal memory?
I really want to know why my pc connection only reads my sd card and not the internal memory. Is there an approved way of connection ie whether I need to use any LG software etc.
Hmm that's odd. When you connect to comp it should only show SD card, have u tried a factory reset?

Hi again,
have made some progress and managed to update the os to 2.1 off the LG site.
When usb plugged into pc it does read the sd card and I am able to copy files inc apps to it but do not know how to run them!!! My belief is that I need to install apps to the phone memory???
Ohhh i think i see your problem now.
So uve downloaded apps from this website or other?
And you want to know how to install them?
Get astro file manager or any other ones the same, connect your phone, put the Downloaded file into a folder , like downloads in your SD card then disconnect your phone , open astro the go into SD card and downloads folder and press on the app, it will ask you to install and Bam your done.
Or if its saying that ur not able to install it, go settings>applications>development>usb debugging tick it and also allow installation or 3rd party apps tick that to.
I think that what you mean?
Hi Chris, I think you are close to understanding my problem, I have a apk file of astro pro on my pc but am not sure where to copy it to. I have tried copying it onto my sd card but am then not able to run it?
Do I need to have the phone rooted etc?

The first thing to do would be to downlaod Astro Free from the market and then navigate to the sd (home on astro) and select the apk, open app manager and install, install. Now it will be installed.
Tap here and then tap download directly from market to download from market.

Yeah i understand. Follow these instructions. Astro is free on the market anyway. The pro version is no different.
A very big thank you to Chris and Quinney I actually had the Astro apk on my laptop and sent it across via Bluetooth and I'm now up and running, Only had bluetooth working since the update to 2.1
Wouldn't mind getting it to run a little faster though, I see people reporting 800mhz being smooth.

Hi, thanks Chris and Quinney, Finally managed to send the Astro apk from my laptop via bluetooth and all my problems are behind me.
Thanks once again.
No problem.
got my nook yesterday, registered, and ready to go...
the e-ink is really good on my eyes and i'm lovin it...
now to what i'm here for..
as everyone i want to hack my nst for a better e reading experience, a li'l browsing, a few gud themes and a few games.
i want some help in doing it. i could have gone through the forums but there being many, it really is a bit hard to choose the right one and in right order. i would like anyone of you to share the links in order of it supposed to be done, i.e. backing up my default files and then to hacking etc. a video tutorial link would be more appreciated. As i have some of my books scanned, suggest a reader to read scanned pdfs after hacking...
and of course i'm not a regular hacker, except that i have hacked my psp once so no problem getting along with the instructions...
Expecting a few gud responses, thanQ

Now to make backup of my factory files, I tried the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1142983 which guides me to backup my files. but the noogie.img link does not have any download in that thread. what really is noogie and please give me an alternate link to noogie.img.

You need to follow the redirect link on NookDevs. The page has been moved. noogie.img is available from that page.
thanks again, i'm done with backing up too.
now, i couldn't find a way to install the first app in the nook memory. of course u can use file manager, but there's no file manager preinstalled, is there? how to get to that apk file?

Wait... are you trying to do the manual rooting process? There are automated rooters. Noogie is used to backup and root manually (if you want to).

Assuming you used the latest TouchNooter, Super Manager should work. I think SM is new from the version of TN that I last used.
Or, once Market is working, download your favorite.

-i'm done with everything, even market's working. but i couldn't search in market. when i type in search box and enter - no response...
-i managed to find 'file manager'' in top free app list and installed it. now when i try to install the apks in micro sd card, it says 'for security,ur phone is set to block non android sourced apps',though i checked 'allow non market apps' in nook color tools. suggest me a way to install the apps in card.
-the market shows the apps with $ pricing, how to make it regional?
-sometimes while swiping to scroll, the page goes to the end all the way...
-after rooting the wifi is disconnecting frequently
thanks in advance...

That seems to be a problem some people have and others don't. What version of the B&N firmware are you running?

Sounds like you need to allow 3rd party apps. Launch NookColor Tools, then toggle the Allow Non-Market Apps settings off and back on. Then try again.

This may be related to the B&N firmware version you're running. Apparently, the NST v1.1.0 has known problems with some 802.11n networks, WPA2 settings and various other random wifi issues. I don't believe TN touches wifi, so it shouldn't have changed.
would you say go ahead, if i say i'm gonna restore the factory settings with the backup and root again?
and yes, i rooted with the latest touchnooter (the link u posted)
Hey guys,
Just got a nook simple touch recently (v.1.2.1) and I rooted it today and installed GSAPP. I'm having some (okay, a lot =P) of trouble getting Searchmarket to install. I go to play.google.com, search it, and click install. Then Google asks me to login to my account, but it won't let me change the values in the username/password. Is there any simpler way to install searchmarket so I can start using different apps? Can i put the apk on my sd card and install it that way?
Also - what is a good manager to change the home screen of the nook to just having different apps on it. Thanks a lot guys, I appreciate everything you do here very much.

Do it from a desktop. Say to install to phone. Then when you log via the NST and click My Apps, it will be there to download.
Hi anyone
Please help me with my questions below, I picked up a Nook for predominantly reading only but wanted one or two apps to be installed from play store.
1. How to sideload books onto the Nook simple touch. I have loads of PDF on my hard drive and epub books. For this do I need to root at all?
2. I see that the rooting solutions on youtube all show 'android market' instead of 'Play store' - but also see these videos are several years old. So are there any new ways to root and get 'play store'.
3. How to sideload APKs not from Play store?
4. I am mainly looking to use Bible app like Quick Bible from the Play Store if not I would have to go and find the APK to side load it.
5. If something goes wrong can I get back to the factory setting of original Nook.
I like in some of the videos that the rooting still retained the original Nook screens and additionally there were options to go and select the apps from the side. Is this how all the rooted Nooks work?
Please suggest a more recent easier thread that can support all of my above queries.
thanks

No. You can copy epubs and PDFs directly onto the NST internal memory or onto an installed SD card.

You are correct in that those are all out-of-date. No PlayStore access via Google Apps since 2017. Google apps themselves are available only in a limited form. See the post on updating NTGAppsAttack. The Yalp Store app, however, can access the PlayStore without Google Apps and can be installed by NookManager (see the post on updating NookManager)

Copy the apk files from your PC to the NST via USB and install via a file manager, or install via ADB.

Yes, that part is always interesting. Not many apps in the PlayStore work for Android 2.1 and even those that theoretically do sometimes decline to run on the NST. I've seen mention of Bible apps on the forum so your best bet may be to search for that and see what worked for others.
5. If something goes wrong can I get back to the factory setting of original Nook.

Yes, unless you wipe out the factory recovery (not recommended by me).

Sort of. NookManager is not very invasive and you can--to some extent--tailor the few apps it installs to suit your wants. After that, it's sort of up to you. Some people want to wipe out all the B&N stuff (not my choice), others not so much. Depends on how you use your device--and that can evolve.

Hi Thanks.
Just another clarification. So after I install Nook Manager - irrespective of whether I make a backup or not, by default there will be a factory recovery already in the device, correct?
I read somewhere in the thread that we make a backup and keep the SD card saved in a safe place additionally to saving the backup image as an additional backup. Can you please explain this further.
Say for example, I use the SD card image to install nook manager - do i use the same card as is to create a backup? Sorry I am asking for too many information!
thanks again

Unless you intentionally replace or delete the factory recovery image, you can return to an out-of-the-box state by powering down, then powering up and holding the two lower hardware buttons at the first sign of the "your Nook is starting up" screen until a screen prompt appears. In fact, it would probably be a good idea to do that when you first get the device. You never know what has been done to it by the previous owner.
NookManager is a utility, not an installation. It resides on the SD card you prepare and can be used, as you say, to make backups of "work-in-progress" as well as an out-of-the-box backup, if you wish. The backups are stored by default on the NookManager SD card itself, but there is only provision for one. A new one will overwrite the old one. If you want to keep a few backups as you make changes to your NST, you can copy the backups to your PC if you connect your NST with the USB cable while NookManager is running. This condition makes the otherwise invisible backup partition on the card visible to your PC.
Thank you!
S
