I'd like to prevent my notifications and program "badges" (can't think of the proper word!) From stacking up in my notification bar at the top of the screen.
It happens when i have a lot of icons there already, ie wifi, alarm etc. Despite there being plenty of room in the middle of the bar, my notifications all stack into one icon on the extreme left hand side with the number of different programs/notifications shown as a number.
Is there a way to prevent this behaviour and force android to use all the available space on the notification bar?
I'm running Ion r2 on my Dream, although my phone has always done this, with the stock rom and JF 1.5 as well.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer!
Sure, keep the number of notifications low and they won't stack. They stack when you run out of space on the bar. I know you think that there's lots of space, but if you unstack them, rest assured that there are definitely too many to fit in the space available.

Unfortunatly there is no forseen solution to this problem. I experience it as well. I think the best we can hope for are new phones with higher resolutions.

This isn't right. There is definitely space for 4 more icons, yet it stacks with just 2.

I'm on Ionr2 and I have 4 icons (email, Toggle Settings, Twidroid, USB) on the left side before the stacking starts. I'm not sure if it's gone up to 5 or not.

When the phone is in portrait mode it stacks when there are more than 2 items on the left hand side - even though there is space for more items. When in landscape, it shows all the notifications/app icons individually.
Very annoying, since the home screen will only display in portrait mode and wont auto rotate when the phone is turned.
Im convinced there must be something i can do to fix this issue!

I was talking about portrait mode. I'm pretty sure there's a fix since I do not have this problem. However, my home screen does rotate though, since I have dxTop.
Do you happen to have Quick Calendar installed? Even though Quick Calendar did not display a little icon on the top for each item in the list and only say in my "ongoing" area on the bar, when I removed it the stacking you talk about went away! It was driving me crazy too, but it seems like either Quick Calendar or the OS sees each entry, even though it doesn't have an icon and counts them.
Not sure if it will help you, but my phone has been working properly after I disabled Quick Calendar. It's a shame, I like the app. :-/

Genius! Removing Quick Calendar solved the problem - thanks!
I've put a link to this thread at the devs website - perhaps when he has solved the issue he could let us know, so we can go back to using his otherwise useful app.
Never had this type of problem, only thing is that my colors blend together because of the custom theme I am using >.<
Ok, I confirmed with the developer this morning, it is QuickCal, though I guess any other app that hides icons would also have this problem as it is a restriction in the os. Jim (the developer) works for google and plans to petition his employer to make some changes to the way the notify bar works. The os allows the developer to 'hide' notification icons, but they still take up an invisible space.
We should see an update in the next couple of days to make a nicer widget with more info and smaller font size, so this may satisfy me if the widget is decent.

Awesome - I already miss QuickCal and I only uninstalled it yesterday!
For some reason the graphic for HTC People - HTC Calander and HTC Music have disappeared in the start menu and shows a blank white window with its blue border. Even though this isn't a major problem I've set a Quick Link from the home screen to music and showing that white window loses the eye candy. Also the slider icons are working fine so its not a problem there. I'm sure if I reset the ROM it will fix it but I was wondering if there was another way to do this instead of having to lose everything and start again...
Thanks in advance !!
I dont know a solution, but partly the same icon problem here; HTC People icon in white/blue, Calendar icon okay, Music icon not there.
So you're not alone Ashley
Just reinstalled the ROM and its all back to normal, guess we couldn't fine a workaround no worries though !
any fixes without reflash.
did you try Change Start Menu Icons?

just deleted them, thanks for the info
I know this problem pops up all the time, but mine is a little bit different. I have had notifications disabled in the stock messaging program since day 1 and never had an issue. Now, 3 days later, the notifications are popping back up in the stock messaging program and I didn't change a thing. I checked back to make sure it was still unchecked and I was right, it still was. I get 2 notifications; one from handcent and one from the stock messaging.
I had this problem back a while ago on my Droid but I forgot what I did to fix it. Hopefully someone can chime in if they remember how to!
Thanks
In the stock messaging go into settings and tick ON notifications and then tick it back OFF and see if that will work.
Nope, still the same problem.
I've tried uninstalling Handcent in the past and reinstalling, it still didn't fix the problem
Remembered how to fix it! It was when I downloaded Beautiful Widgets Pack 2. There's a messaging widget that it installs and it turns notifications on inside the widget. In order to turn it off you have to go to Widgets / Beautiful SMS Widget / Menu / Turn off notifications
Problem Solved, hopefully if someone else has this problem they can learn from it

Try this setting....Settings > Custom Settings > General Mods > Check Dialog Pop Ups User Selected after checking it hit Dialog Pop up type and change to TW Light and see if that gets you to something you can see.
Thanks for the help, sadly it didn't work I've done a little more digging and found out that the bars and sides of Instagram app is black, twitter still is and my contacts are all solid black.. If there's a way I can post screen shots without exceeding limit please let me know

Try this and see if we can get text color back. Go to settings > custom settings > colors > unlinked colors and try manually changing the text color to white and then hit restart ui and see if that at least gets your text back to where you can see it.

I got it back to white I'm not completely sure how but it's back, but now when my home screen settings pop up when I press the button left button it brings up ( add apps, edit, Creat folder, set wallpaper and set theme, all of those bars are black now lol

I'm not quite sure how to get you back as I didn't play with the color schemes extensively, just enough for me. Are you opposed to reflashing the ROM? Alliance is so vast with changing the colors it should be part of the OP that after initial flash you should back up that theme in Alliance manager that way if you have a color bork you can just install that and restart. The colors are alot of trial and error. You haven't broken anything, there's a lot to play with and sometimes you have unpleasant results.
That's what I don't get I didn't edit the colors to get this way I just came across it, but I'll keep trying until I find a solution just trial and error

Have you tried setting your theme to one of the presets? I had a similar problem (but it was because I did mess with everything right away) and setting to a different theme and back to the stock theme saved me a lot of headache. It's a good practice to backup your theme before you stray from what works though.
I searched thoroughly and couldn't find a thread or a fix. Where do we edit the quick settings in the notification pulldown? Mine is blank, and I don't readily see it in Settings, nor is there an edit function in the pulldown. Suggestions?
You don't have the editing pencil icon on there?

Nah, it's straight blank...
Someone else here solved that by rebooting the phone. Afterward the pencil icon appeared and they were able to set it up. Can't remember which thread at this point.
I've rebooted twice. No success...
Pull down the notifications and then pull down again on the (blank for you currently) quicksettings section and you'll see pencil that lets you edit

Oddly enough, I was able to get the quick settings to show up on the lockscreen. I edited it from there, and voila. It's a wierd glitch...

Thanks for this. JUST picked up mine and was going crazy since I wasn't seeing the toggles. Very odd that it comes up blank like that out of the box.
Hey I found out the issue here. I had the same thing happen with the T-mobile variant. I did a factory reset and restored my google account and it was still missing. I did a second factory reset and didn't restore and sure enough it showed up. I then did the oneplus restore and nothing changed. I then got the phone unlocked and still no issue. After a restart everything was fine and then I did a google restore. I chose only to restore call logs and messages. The second it was done the quick settings disappeared again. This is clearly an issue with google and this device. Not sure if it's a T-Mobile issue specifically

Ah, thank you, that fixed it for me. Mine was looking just like yours. And when I locked the screen and then pulled down the notifications drawer, a pencil did appear which let me fix it all up.
I think I might know what broke it for me. When I upgraded my OnePlus 5 from OxygenOS 5.1.7 to 9.0.3, I still had jOnePlus Tools [adb/root] by JRoot3D.dev installed, and it was changing how many quick settings tiles are shown after one swipe down (in the single row). I think it was essentially doing this:
Code:
adb shell settings put secure sysui_qqs_count 8
When I used the app to change that number, all my quick settings tiles disappeared. The app has not been updated in a while, so I'm going to keep it off my phone until it's updated for Android Pie
Just as a quick update on this. This is still a problem on the T-Mobile device on 9.0.13 fully stock.
I guess this must then mean that the quick setting cannot be hidden on the lockscreen...

Actually, I think I found a better solution here.
The trick seems to be that on the unlocked version of the shade, the pencil and user switcher icons only show up when you expand the QS panel. However, if you don't have enough icons in the panel to force the need for the additional row (there is a little hint that shows up when you drag an icon that indicates that you need at least 6 icons), then you can't swipe it down, and there no icons or any warning of any sort are shown.
The shade on the lockscreen doesn't appear to enforce that icon minimum, so the pencil and user switcher show up fine (perhaps this is due to the fact that on the lockscreen, the notifications themselves don't live in the shade as they do when the device is unlocked).
It also seems like older OOS versions didn't enforce that icon minimum, so if you only had, say 4 icons (not sure who would do that), then did an upgrade, you would have this strange behavior.
