I've been reading up about what to do after I tried to "factory reset" my phone and then was stuck at the htc start up soon, which kept looping.
I've been trying to load recovery.img during fastboot (back+power) and then to apply update.zip during recovery (home+power).
However, the problem is that during fastboot, the device isn't recognized (when I go to adb devices on command prompt, no device is listed). I know that my drivers are good bc the device is found when I start up in the recovery mode. I tried to skip the part where I load recovery.img (since when I try to do that, it tells me that it can't be loaded), and to go straight to apply update.zip, but then the phone tells me that update.zip is either bad or can't be mounted.
I have a Rogers Magic (32A). I am a complete newbie, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I should also say that before I tried to do the factor reset, the phone was on the hero rom loaded by a previous user.
try this:
boot in recovery:
fastboot boot recovery.img
then, push update.zip on your sd card ( need a good rom in the tools folder on your computer)
adb shell mount /sdcard
adb push update.zip /sdcard
and apply update.zip with the recovery menu.
thanks for your reply, but it didn't work:
first, it said "cannot load recovery.img"
and then when I tried to mount, it said "mount: mounting dev/block/mmcblk0p1 on /sdcard failed: Device or resource busy"
replace recovery to correct path to your recovery image. (your phone mut be in fastboot mode power with back button pressed)
ex:
fastboot boot c:\sdk\tools\recovery-RAv1.2.1G.img
then your phone must boot on recovery and you could push update.zip
thanks so much. I figued it out - just a simple problem of the update.zip file being corrupt.

What exactly have you tried to do?
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
Hi. My magic is having the same issues. Although I believe it is my own doing. I was going to create a gold card and I flashed the sappimg.zip, I can boot the phone into fastboot but it us not seen, when I run the fast boot command it just says waiting on device..
I can boot the phone up normally but it does not want to connect to the market our link my gmail account to it..
All to jailbreak... Any ideas?
Edit....
I must have had a poor internet connection last night. I have got the market working.

I am having the same problem.
I have a 32b on vodafone uk.
all the device adb drivers have installed fine. I have tried this on both my laptop and desktop (win 7) and when the phone is turned on - it shows fine under adb devices.
When i boot to fastboot, the phone doesnt show, and therefore i cannot load a custom rom.
Trying to root the phone I have so far used the goldcard method to downgrade to get back to 1.5, if i try to flash the recovery img from the phone (using flash rec) then when i boot to recovery (home+power) it hangs on the vodafone screen - this is why i wont to flash from fastboot.
any ideas?
Thanks
phone rooted?
FlashRec is out of date, I'm pretty sure. Is your phone rooted already, or are you at stock?
Hi Guys!
I am trying to root my nexus, unlocked it, installed the right usb drivers, I can see the phone and everything looks right.
Downloaded Superboot for ERE27 with himem enabled and ran this. no problem.
I put the img file on the SD card and when I boot the phone in Fastboot / Recovery it does not find and img files on the SD card.
I tried 2 different cards and also different img files.
When I do this I get first the message no images found than I see the droid with a triangle and a ! in it. - Have to pull the battery.
Ideas anyone?
Thanks
What are you trying to do?
1) you had to unlock the bootloader which enables you to install a new recovery image (which is needed to allow you to install new roms)
2) you had to apply the recovery image Amon RA via a command prompt and a batch file if you use Windows. The phone's USB connection needs to be in development mode and once the batch file executes and successfully finishes you need to reboot the phone.
3) you restart the phone into bootloader mode, use the volume rocker to select the recovery console. If you end up with an andriod and exclamation symbol the Amon RA recovery file was not installed.
4) the new recovery console allows you to clean the SD card. Install roms from the SD card and some other commands. The Roms for the Andriod are in ZIP format and do not need to be unziped. In other words all you need to copy to the SD card is the full ZIP file (approx 75MB) and install that directly from the recovery console.
If your android stays in the booting sequence which is shown as the X with flying little pixels, it's most likely because you did not wipe the device clean first. That item is in the recovery console as well.
Hope this helps. I am just as new to this as you are.
You didn't unzip them did you?
You're trying to root with superboot. Great, but the recovery is not capable of flashing .img files, only .zip updates and roms and such. .img files have to be flashed using fastboot, not recovery, and are flashed from the connected computer.
If you read the superboot instructions from wherever you got the file, you'll see that you have to put the .img in the same directory ON YOUR COMPUTER as fastboot, connect via USB, boot the phone into fastboot, then enter the appropriate command line on the computer to flash the file.
If you've done that, then you are officially DONE with the rooting process.
Also, make damn sure that the superboot version matches the software version on your phone. They're both ERE27, right?
I'm not sure what anosis's post is talking about, but that looks more like the process for installing a custom rom (ie cyanogenmod), than rooting.
To root your phone, you DO NOT need Amon-RA's recovery. You only need that if you want to install custom roms, etc. It wont hurt to have it, as it includes many more functions than the stock recovery, but just to root, you don't need it.
Summary:
If you flashed the superboot.img from your computer via fastboot, your phone is rooted. Done.
You don't need to do anything in the recovery at all for rooting. Only for installing update.zips and custom rom.zips.
Hey, So I have been scouring the forums trying to find some answers about this and you seem to be the closet to my situation. Here is what I did:
So I was running a CM9 Aplha, reverted back to stock 2.3.6 [1ada25375426.signed-soju-ota-189904.1ada2537]) so that I could then apply ICS update [VQ8PQk_V]) which I sucessfully did. This was about a month ago and it was all going well.
Then yesterday I wanted to upgrade to 4.0.4 [hR7QFEtn] so I did and superuser wasn't working properly but then I reinstalled it and got it to work. However I got to the point where everything was working fine EXCEPT for the Google Play store kept on force closing. I spent hours trying last night and could not find a solution.
I tried restoring the previous ICS update that I had and it worked, and then I tried updating again. Also side: My clockwork was on the fritz lately so I was using Zedowmaxs force into clockwork recovery image [fastboot boot recovery3101.img] to force it in sometimes.
Anyway bottom line here is where my REAL ISSUE begins. I decided just to wipe everything and start anew. I factory reset/ wiped properly [cache partition and davliche cache] and then locked my bootloader again. Then tried rebooting. Got stuck on Google screen. Then I unlocked my bootloader again. Tried again, same issue.
So, here is where I am at. Cannot get into recovery from fastboot, takes me back to fastboot. AND, everything is wiped because I locked/unlocked my bootloader. All I can do is adb commands.
I don't know what to do from here and there is a lot of things going on. If you could help that would be great!? What I am going to try next is to flash some recovery on, but I don't know which one/ try to mount a file to my sd card from adb commands.

It looks like the time when you were locking-unlocking the bootloader, you messed up the recovery. Since your phone can get into bootloader menu, I think you can get out of this issue.
Here is what I would do.
1. Unlock the bootloader.
2. flash clockworkmod recovery using fastboot USB.
3. Download recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1.img, put it in C:\fastboot\
4. Shut down your phone. Then start your Nexus One in Fastboot mode by holding down the Trackball and press the Power button.
5. Connect your phone to your computer. Open a Command Prompt (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt), and run the following commands:
cd C:\fastboot
fastboot devices
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1.img
now see if you can get into recovery. If you can, just flash a custom rom using install zip from sd card option in the recovery
I didn't read all the replies but fastboot reads from your PC's disk not the sdcard, unless you are running it through shell or something?
Hello all,
I have been using the super one click method to root my HTC Magic Saphhire 32A.
It works well so far albeit need to alter some SU files in the program. Running of terminal emulator with the command prompt SU confirmed that I have the superuser rights.
Now the problem is whenever I use ROM manager to reboot in recovery, the phone restart, HTC logo shows, then the next screen I see is a big asterisk and a phone image, after this I pressed Home + power, the screen manage to switch to Android system recovery utility, BUT with only 3 options:
1) Reboot system now
2) Apply sdcard:update.zip
3) Wipe data/factory reset
And in the end of the screen, there is one line highlighted in red: E: can’t open /cache/recovery/command
After the phone been rebooted, I switched off the phone. And Pressed vol - with power button, same issue happen too with the asterisk sign shows on the screen. After unrooting it, the phone recovery mode are back to normal with the 3 androids in skates appear on the screen.
Have anyone face the same problem? Any ways to sort this out? I am planning to back up my stock ROM, and wanted to try out some cyanogenmod ROM. I tried Googled and read lots of forum post but left without a solution. Any helps are appreciated! Cheers!
p/s: I am a noob in Android OS. XD
I have the legend and these is a process of booting the recovery from there as update.zip. have you tried renaming the ROM update.zip and flashing it from there?

I fiddled with the ROm manger setting by choosing "delete recovery prior to flashing", and now it makes it worse.
I selected "reboot in recovery" in ROM manager and the phone reboot, but just stuck at the HTC start up screen.
I plugged in the phone while trying another recovery reboot, and it still stuck at the HTC screen, but with a red line on the top saying "fastboot USB". Gosh I think i am going no way with this...

Did you flash custom recovery with ROM manager? Or you just rooted the phone with 1 click method?
Sorry for the late reply. I am just back from overseas business trips. I used Clockmod ROM Manager and did a backup, tried reboot in recovery, and the phone rebooted itself but stuck at the HTC logo now.
I can confirm that the phone is rooted with super user permission.
The reason being the phone didn't manage to get into recovery mode might be due to the missing recovery.img in the phone. Pushing the img file to phone through Clockmod didn't work apparently, so I tried command prompt from PC fastboot flash recovery c:\recoveryxyz.img. It failed too with an error remote failed.
I tried using the terminal emulator in the phone and tried pushing the recovery image again and it didn't happen too. Can some one please help? Cheers!
Download ROM manager and you have option that says install custom recovery it will install Clockwork, and you have flash alternative recovery it installs amon ra's recovery i prefer most
Will try it tonight and revert for the result. Cheers!
I have tried flashing alternate ROM through ROM manager and for once it managed to boot into recovery mode. BUT the device hang right after that, I can't select any of the options and have to pull the battery out to force shutdown.
I tried using fastboot flash recovery *.img remotely through my PC while the phone is in fastboot USB mode, and my command prompt stated FAILED (remote: not allow)
Urgh, I think I might have missed something here... Could some one please help? Cheers!
p/s: my objective is to upgrade my stock ROM android 1.5 to cyanogen ROM. Cheers!

OK here is the thing did you chose right model of your phone? HTC magic is 32A and mytouch and something else is for 32B you maybe flashed the wrong one?
Thanks WoblyGoblin for taking your time to help. Yes, I have selected the correct phone model. I chose HTC Magic.
Did you install the recovery?

I am stuck in trying to install recovery img into the phone. can't boot in recovery mode, tried ROM manager and remote push of recovery img into the phone.
Please refer to the previous post for more info. Cheers!
Ok here is the solution for you use this guide but download this apk and this recovery.
If you dont have 1.5 android but 1.6 download Terminal emulator from market and when you start it type first:
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img
Hello mate,
i just tried the method and I am stuck at FlashRec backup recovery image step.
I clicked on backup recovery image, but there is a command prompt that says:" backup FAILED: Could not run command.
FYI, I am running on Android 1.5. On the edge of giving up rooting and loading a custom ROM now and without a MARKET apps on the phone.

And commands that i gave you?
yes mate, have tried flash_image recovery command from the terminal app and tries to restart in recovery without any result.
I have did a few research and read up and found out that I am stuck with the south east asia Magic model without the google based support, with no market apps and it is perfected SPL.
Quite upset by it. LOL!

Try this
So here's the thing. I've been trying to downgrade and root my Android 2.2 Legend for many hours now and have been failing as the adb could not push the flash_image and misc1-2.img files for reasons unknown to me (said adb: not found despite the files being there).
Anyways, I rebooted into the Fastboot mode and found that my phone's NAND is unlocked as the fastboot says S-OFF. I thought of giving another try by temp rooting with Visionary+ and then trying to Perm Root it. To my surprise, after rebooting and even uninstalling Visionary+, apps requiring root access function properly. Does this mean Legend 2.2 with HBOOT 1.01 has been permanently rooted?
I also installed the ROM Manager and it did manage to install the ClockworkMod. However, whenever I try to back up my current firmware, it says backup cache could not be found.
Also, I wanted to know since its showing that my phone is rooted and has ClockworkMod, will I be able to install ROM without any issues?
If it says adb: not found then you probably don't have problems with the files to be flashed not found but with the adb binary not found.
In older versions of the Android SDK it was in tools directory but since r09 it is in platform-tools instead.
Many of the guides found in the internet refer to the old directory names.
From your HBOOT Screenshot you can perfectly see that your phone is S-OFF.
Did you install Clockworkmod permanently already? (e.g. when you reboot your phone into recovery mode from hboot screen you have clockworkmod recovery and not the default Attention sign)
If yes, then you should be fine installing a custom rom from the rom manager or by hand.
The problems with backuping your current firmware using the nandroid backup that comes with clockworkmod fails here too, though I don't know why.
Maybe you want to just backup your settings with Titanium Backup instead of the whole rom.

IIRC, The S-OFF dev did ask for 24 hours access to an HBOOT1.01 phone to pull off everything he needed and have a play then he'd look at S-OFF for 1.01. See the original S-OFF thread.
I can boot into recovery mode from hboot screen but I have to enter by pressing Vol Up + Power button to enter as clockworkmod shows an exclamation mark in a triangle.
When I enter the recovery mode, it shows E:can't open /cache/recovery/command.
Also, can anyone tell me what will wipe cache partition do in recovery?
I'm willing to help if any Legend dev wants to know more about my phone's Hboot 1.01 with S-off.
I think this message is normal E:can't open /cache/recovery/command
Can you try to backup your hboot and your radio?
sorry for being a n00b. how do i do that?
I tried installing a custom firmware but I can't as the Legend reboots and shows an icon of installing from the microSD and stopping mid-way with a question mark.
I was trying to install Blayo's latest ROM

Would you try to backup your hboot, and posting it here?
Maybe this could work:
(instructions by XDA user OzJD)
Power off phone, Connect your phone to PC, Hold back button while turning phone on (to get to fastboot mode)
On the PC:
Code:
fastboot oem saveprt2sd hboot -n hboot.bin
Or you can maybe try to make nandroid backup....
Hey Guys,
My SGS died on me so I've send it back for repair. Now temporary using a HTC Hero (gsm).
I tried to root the device using this guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253
However, Z4 had some trouble rooting the phone. I thought it was a good idea to reboot the device and try it again.
Now it won't boot. It will only vibrate, show me the hero screen and then it will show me a RED Triangle with an explanation mark.
Could anyone point me in the right direction?
I've only come across this when trying to load into the recovery.
The issue I had was when I was on the stock rom. I could root the phone and boot into recovery. The phone would turn on fine but if I tried to boot into recovery after the initial boot it wouldn't boot. The stock rom resets root permissions every time it boots up.
I don't know if this helps at all..

No it didn't . I'm having this on regular boot.
I tried to follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543571
to see if I could push a recoveryimg. But no luck.
"downloading 'boot.img'... FAILED (remote: not allow)"
EDIT: After doing some research I'm possible to get into 2E recovery. Can anyone provide a link to an update.zip which could restore my phone in working condition?
A little more info:
S-ON
HBOOT 1.76.0007
Radio 6.35.15.11
Boots, Shows "HERO" screen, vibrates and reboots, then show red triangle.
Pressing Vol+ & power brings up 2E recovery.
So I can only get into 2E recovery or HBOOT/FASTBOOT. Unable to boot the phone any other way.
EDIT: Tried flashing heroimg.zip using HBOOT, but i get an "CID incorrect"
EDIT2: RESOLVED!!!!
Extracted rom.zip from RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoD . Renamed to heroimg.zip put on SDCARD and applied using HBOOT. This resolved the issue.
I managed to solve this issue by removing the SD card, it then booted normally.

1. Just double click the .exe file to start the install...
2. Minimize it.
3. Search your c:\ drive for "rom.zip".
4. You will find it in a temporary folder. Copy and paste it somewhere else.
5. Rename to heroimg.zip
6. Copy to your SD card
7. Press the power+back button to get in bootloader mode.
8. Choose HBoot
9. Press the thanks button ;-)
