Hey guys,
my phone is telling me that my sd card is damaged and that I should repartition it. The only problem with this is that I don't want to lose all of my apps that are on my sd card. I tried to use mybackup but it said something about my sd card not being mounted(presumably because of the damage) so now I'm wondering if I would just copy everything from my ext partition onto my computer and then copy it back after I repartition. would that work fine? it seems like it should but I'm not exactly sure how android installs apps.

That would only work if you were running some version of OSX or any Linux based software on your computer. Windows won't recognize the ext partition as a readable partition to just drag and drop files from...at least my Vista doesn't.
You can make a live CD of Ubuntu for free and boot your computer into that to perform the tasks you want to perform I believe. That or dual boot your computer. I use Ubuntu for all my partitioning and backing up of EXT data.

Quick question, I have an 2GB (Non-class 6 SD card) and it was working okay with my G1 phone. I partitioned it with no problem, have apps, themes, roms, basically the whole nine yards on it. I recently just purchased a new 8 gb 6 class SD card and was wondering if Paragon Manager or any other program can transfer the data over flawlessly? I know I have to create a new ext3 part (probably using paragon manager) and then transfer all the data over...but was wondering if anybody else did this before without running into any issues and what was the overall process you took? I appreciate any help. Thank you.
no issues here, done it a couple times. didnt use paragon though. used ext support on my mac to copy all files from both partitions, then format the card using GParted on my Slax USB. then put my files back, inserted into g1 and booted the phone. cyanogens MOD works great with it.

Quick question for you, did your apps still show as installed in the market when you swapped cards? I have been meaning to get my 8GB cards (I have a few with tv episodes on them) set up so I can swap between them and my 16GB at any time, but this question is one that is keeping me from trying yet (that and a lack of time).

insert original card and do not mount it (or unmount it if auto),
dd if=/dev/sdcardfile of=/home/yourusername/tmpsdbackup
swap cards and do not mount it (or unmount it if automatic),
dd if=/home/yourusername/tmpsdbackup of=/dev/sdcardfile
Then run gparted, move your ext partition to the end of the disk and expand your crap32 partition to max.
wait so do i just partion my 8 gig c6 and than copy all files off my other sd card and i should be able to boot up, of course redownload everything or should i not try that
and when i say copy my files ove3r just the ones on my sdcard not all my apps

I used Partition Manager to partition my 8g Sd card into a Ext3 partition. What I did was just wipe, reflash my ROM (Cyanogen's 3.4) and reinstalled all the apps from the Market. It seems like it would take forever, but it really didn't.
The reason why I reflashed was because when I changed SD cards originally, it stopped reading all the original files from the original SD. All-in-all, it was very easy to just: Wipe, Reflash the ROM, then reinstall apps from Market, which should still be listed under Downloads.
how do you format an ext3 partion
I just ordered a larger SD card for my G2 (16GB, currently 8GB) and was wondering how I would back up everything on the current card and then transfer to the new card. Would I just connect the phone to my computer and attach as USB storage and copy the contents of the SD card to a folder? Then put the new SD card in the phone and connect to computer as USB storage and copy the backed up content to the new card? Should I consider formatting the new SD card as EXT through CWM before copying back over the data?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have just done this today, I put my old sdcard in a sdcard adapter and new sdcard in a usb micro adapter the copied and pasted all my files from the old card to the new card. you could of course keep the old card in the phone plug in to PC and just put the new card in adapter and transfer that way.
With regards to EXT partition, I don't Really think it is necessary because our phones have a decent internal memory so unless you have hundreds and hundreds of apps stored on your phone I would leave it as it is. Unless there are any benefits to EXT partition that I'm unaware of.
I am guessing if I use the EXT partition type, then it wouldn't be readable on my windows 7 box (is there a device driver for windows 7 that reads ext)? Personally I like being able to take the SD card out and slip it into my laptop with an adapter.

If you partition your sdcard you will still be able to put it in to you pc and read the contents.
I think I'm correct in saying (please correct me if I'm not) when you partition your sdcard only part of it becomes and EXT partition and the rest remains FAT32. for example if you had a 4gb card and you make 1gb EXT partition when you plug the sdcard in to your PC the remaining 3gb would be accessible.

I currently have apps2sd on my X8 and I wanted to upgrade my SD card. How do i replace the card and copy over the current contents?
Ideally i dont want to have to re-install everything.

I don't know if copying would work so here's logic. first copy everything on your SD card to your new one through your computer. Then delete the copied things from the old SD card. Plug in the new SD card, do a transfer of all apps from phone to SD, then unmount, plug in old, transfer as much apps as possible back to phone. Repeat until all apps have been transfered over.
Could I not somehow copy the ex2 partition and the normal parition and just boot with the new card?
There are basically two ways - get ubuntu, or get software that reads ext2 on windows
or find app on window that can clone ur sd..
So i have Typhoon CyanogenMod7 (MAGLDR) running like a wet dream on my HD2, but the 2gb SD card is really a pain. So i found an 8gb from my Aino.
I have still not quite wrapped my head around how exactly everything is done, i get lost with all the partitions.
ANYWAY what i want is to use the new card without losing anything. What do i haveto do?

boot into CWM, backups/restore, take a backup.
connect phone to PC, use CWM, enter mounts/storage, mount USB,
on the pc, copy off all the files found in the drive that shows up (thats the FAT32 partition)
((or use external card reader if you have one and prefer to do so, or from within running android, doesnt matter))
swap out sd cards,
again in CWM, advanced - partition sd card
re-mount USB, copy back on the FAT32 stuff
in CWM backup / restore, choose restore - advanced - restore sd-ext
restart phone, should work as if nothing happened.

I'm finally upgrading from a 1GB sd card to a 32GB
My Leo has a NAND android installed and the sd card has a A2SD partition with tons of apps and a fat partition with some stuff in it.
Is is possible to change the card and still keep it working without having to reflash the whole thing? The remaining ~31GB will be used to - if possible - expand the fat partition for music and such.

via pc take full copy of everything on the fat32 part of the old sd card (music or whatever, making sure you have hidden files showing, especially the .android folder)
new card into phone
into cwm - partition the new card
in cwm - restore - advanced restore - restore only the sd-ext partition
via pc (cwm - mounts and storage - mount sd card if you dont have a card reader) and copy back all the fat32 stuff to the new fat32 part of the new card. The important part is the .android folder
start phone.

Im about to face same issue, and here is what i plan to do:backup all apps and their data with Mybackup app from Market, copy all files on my pc(the best would be sending all apps on phone storage and only backup data- this will wor for SURE), turn off phone, put new sd, set partitions as they were with CWM(i mean same ext size) and copy all files on just created partition. I hope this will work, i'll have chance to check by myself in a few weeks.
EDIT: Seems like solution was posted while i was writing, but that assured me that i my idea was good

samsamuels suggestion seems the best way to go as long as your ext partition is mounted as(/at) "/sd-ext" there are other places where the ext can be mounted; link2sd for example mounts at /data/sd-ext2. But you'll know when you backup in CWM. A full backup will find the ext if its at /sd-ext and will back it up and you'll see it doing so.
Another option would be to backup the full card; FAT and ext partitions, either within a linux distribution; Ubuntu for example where ext partition is read as normal, or using an application within windows to read it link Linux Reader or Ext2explore, although I don't recall it being too easy to write back to ext while in windows.
Third option being to use something like Partition wizard which should allow you to simply copy the ext partition from one sdcard to the other. Haven't done this myself (yet) and not sure how the HD2 handles partitions that are not made by CWM but you should be able to wipe the new sdcard to unallocated memory then copy the ext and FAT partitions across then resize the FAT to the rest of the sdcard.

Doesn't creating an EXT partition in CWM format the card? So won't the copying of the FAT32 files have to be done afterwards?
