Pardon me but I have been searching and searching for this small bit of info.
But where exactly are Market apps installed to on the G1? What directory are they in. I have an official R30 phone so I am locked out of browsing my folder structure.

You can browse your locked RC30/RC8 phone with the stellar app "astro" from the marketplace, it has many features that you might come to appreciate. Using it you will see a directory with lots of numbers, those are the apps. (sorry not looking at it right now to give specific directions but it is easy to find.)

you think astro is better than android file manager? before android manager was the best but now is astro better? any comparisons to pit one against the other. (P.S. I've been using android file manager)

I like astro much more, the backup function in particular. Basically, astro covers all the parts I need and the interface/customizations are really well done.

Apps are installed into /data/app and their data is stored in /data/data. The name of the apk is its Java package name. So for example, the name of the telephony application is com.android.phone, so the full path to the apk would be /data/app/com.android.phone.apk and the data would be stored in /data/data/com.android.phone/
i like astro much more, it used to be called 'bender' and at that time Android File Manager, now called Linda file manager or something(i think google's coming out with an 'android file manager' so they made them change the name) was much better
theres lot of improvements in Astro Particularly the App back up functionality, used to have to us terminal emulator. also, it has a shortcut utility that lets you make a shortcut to any file and put it on the desktop.
I was trying to use Astro to find locations of caches to redirect them to the SD card since reading through lists in the terminal emulator is a pain. However, when I open the /data folder, using Astro, it shows as empty. Are the contents of this folder somehow hidden? If so, is there any way I can unhide them to Astro? I can pull of a list in the terminal emulator, so I know they are here. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

Data directories have permision for her own app, so you must launch astro with root privileges or you wouldn't see nothing. (try in the terminal without root and you will see what happen if you are not root)

ok - please can you explain me how to start Astro with root privileges?
I have the DevPhone with ADP 1.1 holiday so I should have root?!

Hey guys. I did a manual update the other day and now I am trying to install some APK files from my SD card. Well since Froyo I'm getting Forced Closed (FC) on any of my APK Installer apps.
I've already been to the market and downloaded a handful. Seems they all are doing the same thing?! Any one know of a good APK Installer or a working alternative method for installing APK files via app. I would rather not do it through the Dev Kit.
I've been using Linda File Manager and it's been fine.

Thanks. My other File Manager wouldn't handle APK files... so 2 birds with 1 stone. I downloaded both Linda and Astro. I'll test and figure which one i like the best.

I was just curious but why do all the dev's include Astro? I dont see the benifits of this file management app when Androzip and ES File Explorer are so much better! Androzip has a built in backup utility, task manager and app installer/uninstaller, and it also allows you to unzip rar, zip, 7zip, and tars while ES File allow for that plus networking!
i would venture to say the dev of astro allows for distribution and others don't.
Yea, I was all about Astro until I tried ES File Explorer and realized that it allows me to stream videos over my network. That is a killer feature that Astro can't match.

The above mention are too free in the Market but I could see those dev not wanting there work to be distributed by other means....thanks for the insight...but as far as advantages, is it safe to say that there are NONE and that these are better alternatives?
The Syndicate 2.1 ROM comes with ES File Explorer.
Kinda on this topic, does anyone know of an app like astro that when backing up apps, it save apps data too? Otherwise astro works great.

I don't know of any file explorer apps that do that, I do know that the free version of Titanium Backup works like a champ though.

Thats a good sign then, maybe more dev's will start noticing that these two are far better options than Astro.

Good question. I have both AndroZip and ES File Explorer, and have never seen the need for Astro.
For that matter I wonder why anyone feels the need to package any of these apps into a distribution. Anyone can just go to the Market and download whichever utilities they want.
Hi my New x8 came with Application Installer v2.1.2 (2010), what is currently the best Application Installer I should use ? what software should I use for SD Browser & for task manager ?

I'm scared of the fact that someone could accidentally delete system files with their itchy hand's.
I use Advanced Task Killer it's very simple and easy to hand.
I use Root Explorer too, but I think that ASTRO File Manager is good for unroot X8 I am not sure I just know that it is one of the most loaded File Manager.
And a secruity app is also important. I use Lookout.
i think the most important app is Applanet, with this you can download almost all apps FREE!
So in this app you can search all filemanager and you can try it which is the perfect for you.

Sorry, I mistyped the "SystemPanel" app as System Tool... But "Advanced Task Killer" free, is very good for freeing RAM like jantheg suggested.
As for "ES Explorer" If u dont check the root option and the Mount System as RW option then u wont delete something important 'cause u won't able to...
I liked "Ghost Commander" as file browser before rooting the phone

But Applanet is illegale, because you can download copyrighted Apps for free so if you don't have problems with this you can use it.
use OI File Manager .its very simple and is not Dangerous
for task manager use Android assistant(it have a file manager included)

if i try to see a sub-folder of Android, my external file explorer (Solid explorer, Root explorer) only show an empty folder. The folder i try to see is this: Android/data. Are there certain restrictions of Android 11, which external explorer can't deal with? I don't have this problem with the intermal explorer and - surprise, surprise - with Total Commander (which i don't like so much...).
Anybody knows a solution or workaround to let other explorers look into these Folders?

Seems like Google decided to restrict access to the Android/Data folder to "approved" applications.
Some other users said that Google Files (what a surprise) and Samsung Files work properly.
I usually use a root explorer, wich works fine, but otherwise most file managers probably won't be able to access the folder for a while.
Add MiXplorer and SD Maid to the list of working file managers. Hoping Solid Explorer gets updated soon!

Cx File Explorer is working great!
I'm using it on my Xiaomi Mi 10 xiaomi.eu rom!

Try Solid Explorer and check if you see /sdcard/Android/Data/. Some file managers work and others don't even if you are rooted.

I'll be honest mate I've never needed anything else since root explorer was released.
Absolutely hate solid lol. Only other one I used to use was called Linda I think, G1 days
Xplore works, Solid Explorer 2.88 works as well
Using some of the recommended file explorers above didn't work for /sdcard/Android/Data/. Most of them were able to see /internal/Android/Data/ though. My Note 10+ wasn't rooted, and I wasn't planning on rooting due to the downfalls. I was able to see the files by mounting the SD card in Windows.
Mixplorer works great for me right now.

Yeah that's the last one I tried before mounting it to the PC. Now the question is which of these file explorers I should keep and finally replace ES File Explorer.

My vote would be Mixplorer. They have a few different themes, as well as add ons.
