Hi, the T-Mobile Screen Lock Application is really useful, but I miss 1 feature: Auto Screen Lock after x seconds of inactivity, why? : When push emails or sms or notifications coming in, the device wakes up and screen goes on and if the screen was not locked manually before and if it's in my pocket (a lot of ands, I know...) keys are pressed randomly.
So happend to me yesterday, I called 7 randomly persons and I didn't noticed until the called me back and asked me if I'm crazy...
B.
You can put a password on your device that will lock the device after x sec. Then it will wake up, handle the call & still be locked for other functions. Omega One has got a 'Safe' as well. Gives you a nice clock & your appointments as well while the device is locked.
Cheers, M
oltp: Omega one's app is very nice. Have you tried resource hacking it to match your Today theme etc, or add warnings and stuff? It makes it even better!
V
Hi VJ,
Nope not yet, in fact I ditched all OO aps when I didn't have a BS rom. No I need to reinstall it & find the time to 'alter' One Pass.
Probably spending too much time in solving other people's rom, etc probs. But thanks for the reminder I completely forgot the hacking possibilities. Any tips/links where to find a description to it?
Cheers, m
oltp: Just load it up using any resource hacker and change them bitmaps.
Very easy but slightly hackery. I don't use it either because it screws with buttonmax and similar apps. They're aware of the problem but don't appear to have fixed it when I last tried it... nice app though.
V
Thank you V,
Will try it soon.
Thanx, i needed the same thing and forgot all about the password!
Just set to 0 mins and it will only lock on boot or when coming out of standby
/me is happy now!
Omega One's app is 1-pass?
At Omega One homepage tell that is not WM5 compatible!
Can expalin please?
Thanks
I know, I know... vijay555 just released a similar application earlier today. It seems we were working on the same thing at the same time. After discussing this with him in his thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=45851
I've decided to go ahead and release my own version as an alternative.
The program can (and probably should!) be mapped to a hardware button using the Buttons control panel applet. I run mine on Button 4(hold) because I never use the voice recorder. This also prevents locking the device unintentionally.
I have also added two minor features to the application that some might find useful. You can optionally put the device to sleep after it is locked (same as pressing the power button) and you can configure a program to run just before the device is locked. This is useful if you have an application that you may want to look at frequently without unlocking the device. (Contacts, Calendar, a full-screen clock application, etc).
Both of these options are set in a control panel applet System->Device Lock.
NOTE: I know some people have use memmaid to register the lock application to run on wake up. If you do this, DO NOT select the suspend device option!! This will result in not being able to wake your device up for more than a few seconds (Wake up the device, your notification tells the device to lock, the lock process suspends the device, You wake up the device, rinse, repeat)
If you do this, all is not lost, just soft reset your device and uncheck the option to suspend in the control panel.
Here's a link to the installer (Requires WM5 PocketPC edition):
http://www.mr2-power.com/downloads/DeviceLock.CAB
You will likely need to soft-reset to see the new Control Panel applet.
*NEW* The latest version does NOT require the Lock Device today item to be loaded!
Enjoy!
-Matt Armstrong
Tried it on a BA and it works but change the default from suspend when locked since the applet doesnt show till after soft-reset. Thanks.
so you're saying make the default behavior NOT to suspend. Someone in another forum also requested the ability to blank the screen rather than suspend. I'll likely add this option in the next couple of days. I can change the default registry entry now though. A new installer should be up in a couple of minutes.
-Matt
Ok, yet another new CAB file has been uploaded. This new version has the option to suspend the device OR just blank the screen. If you blank the screen your programs will continue to run (and consume more power!). To restore the screen just press the power button. I also changed the default behavior after install to JUST lock the phone (not susped or blank). Everything else is the same.
-Matt
P.S. I appreciate all of the feedback very much. Keep it coming!
Thanks for the changes armstrom, ill download and test again. Thanks
Just installed and it works ok.
I have updated the software one final time for the night.
I have eliminated the requirement that the Lock Device today item be loaded. Now you can go unload that item and free up 20 pixels of screen real-estate For some reason this was a biggie to many people :? So it's finally done.
Keep the bug reports coming as you find them.
-Matt
great version. Without the plugin makes it invaluable. Maybe you can make as an option to hook it to the power button to get it to run when you power off? Or we can use vjkey for that
Well, I can add that option. In fact an early revision of the software did have it. I was just having inconsistent results with it on my MDA. For some reason the MDA wasn't firing the wakeup event if I suspend and then resume with just the power button. (press the power to suspend, then press again to resume). If I programmatically suspend the device, then I get the event every time. I can add it back in though if you want to try it on your device. Maybe you'll have better luck?
Edit: I just installed the new version vj's software and it has the same problem as mine. For some reason my phone does fire the wake-up event properly! I'll add the option back in to my software since it seems to work on other people's hardware just fine.
-Matt
Awesome!!
Man this place is great!
Armstrom, both you and VJ are awesome. This was the biggest single thing I've missed since buying my 8125. Since I use Xpress mail and the device wakes up when a message comes in, and if it's in my holster, and a button is gettind pushed, all sorts of weird things would happen.
So I had to always remember to go to Today, scroll down, hit the lock function...grrr.
But no more. I can't believe the terrific amount of support, hard work and resources you guys all contribute to these cool little gadgets.
Thanks again to both of you.
-JMS
If this can be made wot work reliably with power on events it would be awesome.
Thank you for putting these together.
One quick question...
I would love to have the Today screen as my default app to load on a lock action, however I can't find a way to do it. There is no .lnk file to point your Device Lock to.
I tried installing PHM Keys (as there's a Today .lnk in there) but it won't install in WM5.
Any programatic way to invoke/call the Today screen from a shortcut/lnk file so I can point the Device Lock to that file so Today is always showing when I lock my phone.
Thanks again, you guys are great.

Great job Matt.
One quick question for ya - I would like to keep Egress running on the today screen when the device is locked. When I choose NOT to suspend the device or blank the screen, the today screen shows but the egress app is not cycling thru the latest news (it sticks on the last before the lock).
Is there any way to keep Egress at least cycling thru the news it d/l before the lock (if not allowing it to continue to update at egress specified times)?
Thanks again!
Thank you
A very useful app!

I'm really not sure how to solve that issue. I've never use the application you're talking about. Perhaps it is detecting the device being locked and not updating itself? I'm really not sure.
-Matt
Matt,
I think it must have something to do with the phone being in locked mode. I've found that when the phone is locked, the screen will go black after a couple seconds for both the lock on the today screen as well as when using a hardware button thru your application.
When I use the today screen app, after tapping the screen when black, it will display the today screen with the cycling headlines.
When I use your lock app, however, and tap to get the screen back, it doesn't cycle. If I hold down the power button and then turn it back on after being locked by your app, however, it does cycle.
Not a huge deal, just found it interesting...Wonder what would be different between the included today screen lock and your lock app that would cause this?
Thanks again!

Ok, I have added the option to lock the device on wake-up. Note: I have not been able to test this because my device does not properly send wake-up notifications. If someone could give this a try and let me know if it works I would appreciate it.
I have also added command line options to override the configuration specified in the control panel applet. The options are as follows:
-o:* Overrides the lock options and takes a number 0-2.
0 = Lock Only
1 = Lock then Suspend
2 = Lock then Blank Screen
-r:* Overrides the application to run after locking. This must have Quotes around it. Specifying -r:"" will prevent the default application from running.
Here are some examples:
Blank the screen and run the calculator.
DeviceLock.exe -o:2 -r:"\Windows\calc.exe"
Just lock and don't run anything
DeviceLock.exe -o:0 -r:""
You do not need these command line options if you just want the device lock to always follow what you have specified in the applet. These are only to optionally override the specified behavior. Some people on another board expressed the desire to have the device lock in two different ways depending on what they were doing. This is the way
Again, please let me know if the lock on wake functionality works or not
The cab is in the usual place.
-Matt
Here are some examples:
DeviceLock.exe -o:2
I want to start this threat to put together information in order to sort out why the device lock delay (see below) appears and how to solve it.
wm6.5 device lock app has changed from "tap here and next there" to a slider style like app you know from s2u2.
problem:
device lock is enabled
Code:
HKCU\ControlPanel\BackLight\AutoDeviceLockEnable=1
wake up the device by short pressing the power button
device lock screen is displayed instantly
it takes ~2 seconds until the slider of the device lock screen is activated and can be slided.
if you use device lock it becomes really annyoing.
there are some threads about this like this one, but the solution is not working on a Touch HD.
can anybody sched some light onthe problem why and where it appears or maybe someone already found a solution.
please post any useful information.
please do not post tips like use s2u2 or any other locking app - I do not want to use them.
the only thing i can thing of is use s2u2 or any other locking app

latest build 23001 still has this annoying delay
Iv noticed this too... The biggest annoyance for me is you turn the device on and the backlight isnt very bright, makes it near impossible to see the screen in daylight. Is it possible to have the backlight come on full when you press the power button?
i have this problem too. i think it is a serious bug of wm6.5
just hoping it will be fixed when the official release come out.
god i thought i was the only one, something about my config...
and i was exited about the new 6.5 lock screen,
but then it works like all the other M$ 6.5 sh!t, it doesn't
had to switch away from it

thanks for your help - but that was the solution i am talking about in my first post and unfortunately does not work.
also find this intensely annoying! if you look, on my hd, in the top left corner a small windows flag appears to indicate that the slider is locked, it disappears once the slider is active, and there is a definite exact time out, i dont think its random or a load time
hope this is sorted cos its rubbish!
regards
mat
What I've done that got rid of most of the delays regarding the lock screen on my Xperia:
I got 6 cpr files from my device's /Windows directory: LS_LockScene_xxxxxxx.cpr, LS_AlarmScene_xxxxxxx.cpr and LS_PhoneAlertScene_xxxxxxx.cpr. Get files that fit the resolution of your device, they are in pairs for portrait and landscape
opened each one of them in a text editor (they are XMLs inside)
removed all "ControlSequence" sections from them (those sections are small (like 4 entries) and big (up to 21 entries). These sections are animations of arrows. Arrows will still be there after that, they just won't animate.
uploaded cpr files back to /Windows, overwriting originals
soft-reseted.
Hope it works on your devices too

yeah. and with 6.5 23003 onwards in the top right corner an "X" (for close) appears. only when it goes off you can access the slider.
it seems as if an app is started.

great. that helped a lot!
now the lock screen is flickering shortly and the whole lock screen slides in once more from the bottom to the top but then the slider is instantly accessible.
from a time perspective a great improvement!
update:
basically you can delete the whole layer
Code:
<Layer ID="SlidePath" >
...
</Layer>
which removes the animation of the arrows and the arrows themselves.
do not delete this section if you do not know in which direction to slide the button
however, the delay is still ~1 second. but i think i can live with that allthough it is annoying to wait one stupid second to proceed
the delay you get when recieving a call with lockscreen on is caused by the slide to answer feature of alot of the new dialers. it conflicts with the popup call answer screen with wm 6.5. to fix this can find a dialer that doesnt have slide to answer feature. the backlight problem came from backlight.dll in the kaiser, using a new one from stock rom now and it works perfect
If you enable the enter a pin number after slide, there is no delay at all. I know this isnt a solution i hate entering a pin. however, i have a felling the pin app is running in the background and thus you dont get the flicker where it flicks from Start menu back to the lock app. Hence if you could create a dummy pin app, it could work to stop the delay.

that's true. i replaced LS_SimplePinScene_480x800.cpr with an empty one and allthough not using pinlock, the lock app did not work at all.
What if we designed something where when you slide it calls a mortscript or something and enters 0000+OK to by pass the pin screen (assuming you set pin to 0000). Then you edit the Pin screen so it is just a clear page, so you dont even see the pin screen flash up.
Not sure if this is at all possible as im not a programmer. Just a thought

good idea. maybe someone can change LS_SimplePinScene_480x800.cpr so that it does not expect the pin from screen but is embedded directly into the cpr file?
can anybody who has a better understanding of cpr files or the lock app give us some tips?

NightStand is a simple alarm clock application with large numbers to be easily seen.
It allows for the phone to dim the screen but keeps it from turning off for that middle of the night glance to see what time it is.
Features Include:
Alarm with 8 sounds
Custom Color of the Digits
5 Minute Snooze Button
Solve an easy math problem to help you wake up (to you turn alarm off)
Automatically runs on AC power (optional)
Keep the device awake or let it go to sleep (optional)
12/24 Hour setting
How To Use:
When you run the application click on the configure button (upper right corner) to set all the settings
Three sliders allow you to set the custom color.
Alarm toggle to set the alarm and the sound.
AC Toggle to set Auto mode.
When the alarm is going off, click the snooze button to snooze or click anywhere on the screen to stop the alarm.
Update 1.1
The alarm should now go off regardless of what phase the phone is in (device awake or sleep), the app is running or not.
Screen is flipped
Update 1.2
Added an option to flip the screen
Update 1.2.1
Minor Update to start NightStand with correct orientation, Flip Screen option takes effect right away
Updated to work on HD2
Update 1.2.2
Fixed shifted screen on WVGA resolution (I think)
Added toggle for math question on exit
Phone stays awake while alarm is going off (for heavy sleepers like myself )
Looks nice.
A couple of issues on my TP2. The display is rotated the wrong way, and sliding the keyboard our causes it to get distorted. I'd prefer to use it with the keyboard out as I can tilt my phone .
I like it though, nice start.
P.S. let me know if you want the thread moving to the Development & Hacking apps forum from the Diamond one.
Dave
I just uploaded an updated version, try it out and let me know if it works better with the keyboard out.

It crashes if you run the app with the keyboard out, and it is still upside down if I open the Keyboard after running the app.

it rotates correctly on my tp2, thanks just what i was looking for
Awesome work!I really like the big number.but, why not add a toggle button to turn off the backlight in the settings.I think it will waste lots of power when the device keeps dim.Perhaps you can add a sensor to lighten the lcd when we want to see what's the time now.
This Doesnt Work on my HTC HD2 even tho it suports WVGA Screens, WHY??
thanx.

same here, on my HD2 I've got only two color squares in the corners and one big rectangle in the middle... so no clock. settings and exit "square" button work well.
Not working on my HD2 either. Two boxes of colour on each side of the left hand side of the screen - one to change settings and one to exit plus a big box in the middle which is meant to be the digits i guess.

1.1 now has the correct orientation, but the display is messed up if I put the phone in Landscape and then open it.
Only a minor annoyance.
Dave
any way you could send me some screenshots so i can see if i can fix it..
Ok now working on my Omnia after installing 1.1 and the libgs cab you posted.
Two things.
First, if you have SPB Mobile Shell 3.0.1 installed, the app comes up but is shifted slightly. I believe this is because they do something with the top windows start bar. Not a huge deal but something I thought you could check into.
Secondly, Could you have a setting to determine which way to have the screen flip? I would like it 180 from where it is now. My power plug ends up on the bottom and so the phone won't sit level. If it was landscape but the other way, it would be perfect for the omnia.
Thanks,
Robb
Would it be hard to program the trackball to wake to the lock screen rather than having to hit the top button. I find it very annoying and it would be so much better for one handed use.
(this thing is slippery!)
It bugs me a bit too. When I had an iPhone I almost always use the home button to bring the unlock screen up. Also my nexus one is a bit slippery too I want a case.
I would be more interested in using volume keys to play/pause/forward/rewind the music payer without waking up the phone. This was one of the applications in iPhone.

If you're playing music, the volume keys are still able to adjust the media volume while music is playing and the phone is locked (and the screen doesn't turn on while doing it either). I prefer that behavior actually.
That's the one thing that always bugged me about the Droid, and what do you know... the N1 has the same problem, lol. Anyway, there has been a lot of discussion about this (including here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=613678&highlight=trackball). There's a thread in development as well about maybe mapping that function to the trackball... who knows.
CLOCK APP
I just realized if you open the clock application, and let the phone go to sleep, then you can "Turn it on" with the trackball or volume rocker.
Now if there was a way to have the phone set to "Sleep = Clock" we'd be golden; the clock screen doen't look that bad, either.
Lots of great thoughts here. Bump.
I hated this as well!
I found a solution! (sort of).
"Lock bot Free" from the android market is what i use now.
It enables you to pick differnt lock screens ( i like the hero one since u just scroll downwards to unlock) and it allows for u to press the trackball to wake up.
I have found that it is kind of buggy still. If i reboot the phone, I end up with two lockscreens. The regular nexus 1 one and then my hero one. So i had to reinstall it for it to work properly.
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with that app. I just found it on my search to make my N1 less annoying.

I was about to come post this same thing, although I'm experiencing a weird glitch too, but I actually like it. For some reason I don't get a lock screen at all after my phone locks. I hit the trackball/volume keys/power button and it just goes straight to whatever screen I was at when it locked. Pretty sweet actually.

What I don't like about Lock 2.0:
1) If you wake up your phone by accident (and don't unlock the phone) it doesn't go back to sleep after a few seconds of inactivity,
2) it doesn't show your notification bar so you don't know whether you got a new email or text message or other notification.

Using Lockbot free now. Does what I wanted perfectly (press any hard button to wake up), plus lets me use the Eclair lockscreen which I've always found more aesthetically pleasing.
Installed Lockbot Free, and it does exactly what I want with the trackball, but I can not work out why sometimes it gives me the Eclair screen which I like, and sometimes it chooses a different screen?

You have to uncheck the stars (I can't remember specifically) next to the unlock screens you do not want to show up. I never liked LockBot, it isn't a precise copy of the real lock screen(s), if I'm going to use a imitation I rather it look complete..
Open up the app, press "My theme." It'll give you a "playlist" of different lock screens. I simply un-star all the ones I don't want and stick with Eclair after changing the background. The clock's font is a bit off, but I will cope.
