EXCLUSIVE: Android Team Q&A [VIDEO]
A special press-only Q&A session with the Android Leadership Team took place at Google IO that gave us inside access to the thoughts and ideas of those making the important decisions when it comes to Android. While I live-blogged the event a few days ago, I also promised video – so here it is:
The people on the panel are (left to right) Andy Rubin (VP of Engineering, Founder), Mario Queiroz (VP of Product Management), Hiroshi Lockheimer (Director of Engineering), and Vic Gundotra (VP of Engineering) who joins the team on stage just a couple minutes into the panel.
Although no earth shattering announcements or ground breaking secrets were revealed, I think anyone who loves Android will truly enjoy this behind the scenes look at the people who make Android come to life.
UPDATE: If you want a good laugh, fast forward to about 41:25 and listen through about 41:55. Andy Rubin is hilarious.

Would be nicer if I could understand anything he was saying.
I can't understand a word :-(
Is this related to the questions people posted at Google Moderator? I wrote one about spam in the Android Market and would really like to see it answered...

I'm a mentor of a robotics team in Scottsdale, AZ and recently had a great opportunity to talk with the co-founder of Apple about several things. For clarification, this is not at all word for word; just a recount.
While hammering out the issues we were having with our bot, Steve Wozniak approached my rookie robotics team. While we were talking about certain design elements, I stated how I loved my Android OS, and awestruck by the conversation that ensued.
I said something along the lines of how nice multitasking is, and he pulls out his solution to iPhone multitasking, "I usually talk with this one, and do other things with my other iPhone" HAH! What a great solution! Then he pulls out his N1 !!!! OH MAN!! Steve Wozniak has a Nexus One?!?! An Android phone nonetheless!!! I guess its not that surprising, seeing how he hasn't necessarily been affiliated with what we now know as Apple. So I asked him how he likes Android OS. He said some great things about the user experience; specifically the voice recognition with navigation.
While in the queue area for qualification matches I had an interesting opportunity to pick his brain about the HTC Apple lawsuit. First off I asked him what he thoughts were. He commented about specific iPhone OS feature-sets 'Patent #7,657,849: Unlocking A Device By Performing Gestures On An Unlock Image' and how it could seem like an infringement. Though, I did sense hesitation on other vague patents. I can't remember what he said word for word, but he did comment on the age and vague wording of patents that Apple had been awarded. I am trying hard to not be controversial, and steer clear of putting words in his mouth, but he didn't seem to have much support of Apple in the sense of the lawsuit.
I am a total Android-whore, and love getting nerdy about this stuff. Its an honor to have been able to speak with him about Android and iPhone. In all reality I think what we are here, in our XDA community, is revolutionary. Just thought I'd share my experience
In b4 /cool story bro.
This can only be good news for the android community if true!
well he has stated openly that he uses a nexus one so i believe Wesbalmer's story.
thanks for sharing it!
He said that he was given ten! to divvy amongst his peeps
Hey guys the owner of the Italian Bada Blog created a petition for us Bada users to sign that WE WANT BADA 2.0 NOW AND NOT IN MARCH-APRIL 2012. I already signed and I thought I share the news with you so if anyone want to sign, do it, the more people sign the better, so Samsung understands the big problem they created.
http://www.change.org/petitions/bada-20-update-for-old-wave-devices-we-want-it-now
seriously !!!!!
it is our right to ask Samsung why it did this and ask for the update
no need to sign any penetation...we can annoy Samsung with bad publicity as a way to kill its new bada devices to force it to give the update
who is with me ?????
best regards
Done
Lets hope for the best ...
Signed up and posted this on Badadwonload.com
Hi TS please indicate that the petition spearhead is Manuel of Badablog.it and is a credible Leader for the petition and that he intends to discuss this with Samsung HQ provided he can produce massive numbers.
I have signed up for the petition please guys we need to reach at least a thousand to be taken seriously.

Why not write here...
Best Regards
i wrote to bada team already through the bug reporting channel which is directly connected to them
i wrote a simple question...how will the power app race go without the users
Best Regards
Probably they don't want to pay for the contest and so they are doing so. No bada 2.0 till March, less users, less downloads, no need to distribute the money!
The money saved then goes to make new Galaxy phones!
Dear Developer , Although the registration for bada 2.0 Power App Race is closed by the end of Dec, the REAL race will begin at next year. We have commenced the sale of Wave 3, M, Y from the end of Nov. and it is proceeding very good. We planned that the launch of bada 2.0 firmware upgrades start early 4Q, However, we are sorry that the plan was delayed until this month unfortunately. We will do our best to advance the schedule for bada 2.0 firmware. Once again, we are so sorry that the schedule of the applications which achieve 100,000 downloads might be delayed. Sincerely, we wish you the best of luck in our race. Thank you.

it is like we were going to do what you are saying but unfortunately we could not
I think there is no need for petition also as bada team itself is saying that something went wrong

May be Samsung wants to quit Bada. They release new phones but sales not going so good. Looks like a dramatic failure. Their mistake..
Sammy is happily travelling on Google's 'Bus' with others...but, anytime anyone can be kicked out at the next bus stop. And...............
There is something wrong in this picture. If Sammy is a 'serious' and 'creditable' company (!) there is something going on.
I think it would be great if you guys could post this news in other Bada - Forums and Blogs or contact the Blog Authors, so they can post the link to the petition on their Bada Blog. I already contacted the guys from bada-blog.de lets see if they will post the news. badablog.ru already posted it. If we want to be taken seriously we Bada users need to unite, problem is that not all Wave owners know about this petition, so we need inform the people through Forums like this and Blogs.
So spread this Link to every Bada blog and forum you know, so Samsung takes us seriously
I signed but I don't think anything changes. I'm hopeles for bada.

Yes me too. Bada is almost dead for me. My only hope is the Badadroid project but if the project fails I`m gonna buy an Android phone.
But for now we at least have to try to make clear to Samsung how bad they fu**ed up with this decision.
Samsung is loosing it's credibility and reputation badly..in this century if you support your customers as long as possible you are the king. And people close their eyes and buy your product like crazy because they are sure to have a real support and trust you.
Do you think Apple or Google developers are coming from another planet, which are super intelligence? NO, the companies are serious about their job. They play the game as honest as possible. Samsung is acting like a child they only want your money. Now, how can you buy their other products?...
How it is possible for a giant company like Samsung, to promise the update and
delay and delay and delay.
I don't think developers are very interested in creating Bada apps. Samsung is inviting them all around the world but there is no ready and completed OS. How can they trust?...
In the future Samsung will be a hardware company and Samsung Galaxy phones will be named as Google Galaxy and in the back of the phone at the bottom it will write with microscopic text ''Made by Samsung''.
All,
Since today's announcement of the WP8 features, I immediately began to think of the homebrew community. I think we should start a funding for the homebrew pioneers so that they can get a WP8 device to test with.
What does everyone think of this?

Hi there,
Before any donations are given, clear objectives need to be set with approximate timescales, This way clear expectations are set up and there's not room for donators to say things like "You got the device already 5 minutes ago, why isn't it hacked yet????????"
Below are some guidelines for consideration in how the thread is constructed and managed, this is not conclusive but for guidance
The developer needs to be made aware, approve of the action, and post in the thread (preferably post 1 or 2 so that it's clearly visible) his paypal/other account for accepting donations, the account info should NOT be posted by someone who is not the developer (unless it links directly to a post by the developer containing the same info, with some text like "this is the donation info, check <link to post>post xxxx by developer</link to post> for more info") - this way there's no question of authenticity and where the donations are going.
In the same post as above, the developer should detail his intentions once the device/software/product/etc is obtained, and if possible a rough timeline
The developer should have at least one or two major contributions to the community under his belt before any large donation thread is made.
There should be a clear statement from the developer and/or the thread starter that there is absolutely NO obligation on the developers part to release a final product. Although this is what everyone wants, the entire reason for a donation drive in the first place is because it's not the easiest thing in the world to do. This means it may not even be possible in the long run. There's a great potential for hurt feelings and "bad juju" if people donate with the expectation that a final product WILL 100% be released. Donations should be seen as support towards a best-effort on the part of the developer.
it is obviously early days in the world of wp8 development but with the looming release of wp8 and the new devices it will bring, exciting times lay ahead.
Please do not post in this thread unless it is specifically development related and any questions regarding the content/structure of this thread should be made via pm to me or any other senior moderator.
Greetz.
Edit: this thread will be occasionally cleaned of all off topic chat, don't be offended if your post disappears
In my Opinio we should "all" Focus one Phone.
Like the legendary HD2 is used by the most people here (i guess), which provides the most costumization depending on rom's etc.
I think a Phone like the HTC Zenith would be a nice follower of the HD2

exactly.
Greetings. My name is Glenn and I work with children and adults with disabilities. For the past few months I have been reviewing educational apps for children with autism. Sometimes a math app has great graphics and good engagement--think completing the equivalent of half a dozen math worksheets in five minutes. But the same app doesn't take into account the extreme math anxiety, and general anxiety, that children with autism can have: I have come across apps that said "Not good. The answer is ____" or "NO," in a disappointed voice that you would expect to hear from your mother if you failed a test that you hadn't bother to study for. So in addition to the review I am often providing suggested adaptations to make the app a successful experience for the child.
I have gotten a few emails from educational app developers, thanking me for reviewing their app and also telling me how difficult it has been to get a decent amount of downloads for their app after all their hard work. When I was interested in the film industry, I used to publish interviews with up and coming screenwriters, "Interview Spotlight with Peter Considine and Morgan's Way." I would like to do something similar for educational app developers and have created a "self-interview" for educational app developers. Once I receive the responses, I will publish them. I don't have 4,000,000+ readers on my site, so I can't give you that kind of exposure, but the readers on my site are looking specifically for educational apps like yours that can improve the learning experience of their children.
If you're still reading, and your answer is yes to my question, "Would you be interested in sharing with my readers a bit about who you are (an educator, parent/sibling of a child with a disability), why you decided to build the app, and what makes it special?," then you can find the submission guidelines on my site, autism plus math dot blog spot dot com. Click on the tab at the top marked, Guest Post guidelines for app developers.
Thank you.
I don't fall into the category of being interviewed by you. I do have an idea for you that I would be interested in reading. A blog post or any readable describing what mistakes developers make in regards to making apps for people with disabilities and or other issues. You can include things like what not to do (a disappointment sounding/looking "No you are wrong") and what can be done instead. I guess for the app to say "please try again" but I don't know if that's good enough for people with anxiety. I would definitely read such an article, and perhaps it would come in useful sometime in the future.
Up until your post here I didn't realize that saying "no you are wrong" may not be so good with people having anxiety. In the blog post it would be also very interesting and good to include how such statements effect/affect people of such conditions.
Just thought I would bring this idea up to you

Thanks for asking.
I think the key thing to remember is that every child with a disability is different, so what may frustrate one child may turn out to be an enjoyable challenge for another. Having said that, it can help to imagine your potential learner as someone who's spent most of their education repeatedly giving the wrong answer when called on, and as a result, they need LOTS and LOTS of positive encouragement and praise.
My comment above about "no you are wrong" is from an article I wrote a couple months ago (see below). I also provide examples of games that DO provide a positive learning environment and how they did it.
You did say that you weren't an educational apps developer, however. I think most video games are by design kid friendly, regardless of whether a child has a disability. Video games are about not having to read and memorize a bunch of rules, but instead are about playing around and trying different approaches. If you die in the game, you can hit replay and try again in five seconds or less. So the potential frustration from losing is short lived.
Where I could see a frustration is in games where if you die after completing several levels, you have to start over from the beginning. Make sure you have sufficient checkpoints so that players only have to restart from their last checkpoint. But again, this is a feature that will benefit children without disabilities as well.
Ugh! Looks like I can't give you a link to the article mentioned above, so I have moved it to my landing page: autism plus math dot blogspot dot com.
I also have a virtual filing cabinet of "How to" articles for app developers on my home page: click on the tab at the top marked "How to resources for app developers." Of particular interest, you may find useful the article on the game Re:mission, which increased the number of children with cancer who voluntarily took their meds.
Thanks Edapps!
XDA still lets you post links like this by the way:

I just read that article and will go through some of the games reviews you got later when I'm at home.

Hey folks,
Long time user (and prior to that, long time lurker) on these forums - but today, I'm posting with a random, unusual request.
I'm trying to find Android fans in Los Angeles who may be available to help me with a little TV filming this coming Monday (26th June).
Long story short - my day job is as a TV reporter in Los Angeles.. I work for a global news channel called CGTN America (we broadcast out of Washington DC, Beijing and Nairobi to around about 1.2 billion homes worldwide.. including in the US on cable and satellite, though most of our viewers tend to come internationally)..
Since I'm a huge tech-head, I'm filming a story to go out later this week on ten years of the iPhone. But I want to make it different. What often happens with these stories is some networks get reporters who know nothing about technology to do them, and you end up with something that is just saying 'the iPhone is the most amazing device ever invented.'
Regardless of what side of the fence you sit on, it is an amazing device. And it did have a revolutionary impact. But there is so much to the story other than that.
One of the angles I really want to explore is the battle between iOS and Android. The way that the iPhone almost set the lines for a war. You see it on forums like this and XDA and Apple-related forums - people trying to outdo each other.. and people getting really irate as they nail their colors to the mast of their OS of choice.
I wondered if there may be some Android fans in the LA area who I could meet up with on Monday, if we can arrange a convenient time and we film a little sequence (details of which, I'm still to work out in my head) but talking about the iOS vs Android wars. This may be just Android users or it may an Android user and an iPhone user both debating what's best about their relevant OS.
It's still a germ of an idea. But I wanted to throw it out there and hope it gets seen over the weekend.
I'm gonna post this over on Android Central as well to try to maximize the number of people who see it and also on the General Android Chat Forum here. The reason for the double post is that in my experience, the real ire is often between Samsung and Apple fans (reflecting the companies, almost) and so there may be people in that board that this really appeals to..
Anyway, please do reply to me on here, or via DM, or via twitter @phillavelle.
Thanks for looking and have a great day!
Phil
Hi Phil,
I’d be happy to offer some of my time to you forthis endeavor. I’ve lurked on these forums since long before iOS or Android even existed. If you are indeed serious about this I can provide you with my full name which you can then quickly google to see my credentials.
I can play either side of the discussion as I have been a mobile technology consultant for about two decades and have owned (and still own and use both iOS and Android) devices from all major manufacturers.
