Beware HTC EVO Buyers *who are leaving AT&T....

$325 ETF is only going to start from 1st June and that too only for new contracts!

Just cancel your contract on the 31st, get a Hero with Sprint, and exchange it for an EVO on the 4th. Voila!

That can't be emphasized enough. AT&T ETFs for customers currently on contract will remain $175 with the $5/month prorate regardless of this change. The new ETF will only apply to those customers signing up for a new contract with a smartphone on or after June 1, 2010.

this is just AT&T gearing up for the newest Iphone release...

And Verizon just raised their smartphone ETF to $350.

whats the EFT on tmobile??

From what I know, it also applies to upgrade customers, because an upgrade is a new contract. So if you upgrade to a smartphone, your ETF rises as well. Though you have to consider... if you're willing to upgrade, what are the chances you'll cancel your contract? Not likely, I'd say. Though there are circumstances, I'll admit.
First Verizon raised their ETF, now AT&T... I guarantee T-Mobile and Sprint will follow suit soon, that's always the way things go in this industry. So I wouldn't freak out about this, people. After all, you have to consider WHY they're raising ETFs... it's because of all the people commiting fraud around this country. Hell, I just had a guy the other day want to buy an iPhone from me, and blatantly said he was going to cancel his contract and keep the phone, allowing him the phone cheaper than if he'd bought it full price. The textbook definition of fraud XD
Now that I think about it, I should've let him... since Radioshack has ownership of the device if the contract is cancelled within 90 days ;D Would've been a kick in the pants for him, getting what he deserved.

AT&T ETF
Funny you mention this Friday I found that my contract is up today, May 23. I had to get a manager because she insisted that after today, my ETF was $175.00. No, No, I completed the terms of the contract for THIS phone, now Im just paying for its usage and can walk anytime I want! If I get a new phone (now) then I will be married to AT&T for another 2-years and ETF would apply.

This brings an interesting question into the foray: would you prefer to pay the full, un-subsidized cost of a smartphone if it meant you had no contract and no ETF's? I would think that monthly fees would be lower if handsets were un-subsidized.
Or is the current state of affairs preferable: lower unit cost, but strapped to a contract and ETF's?
What say you?

I would think AT&T or T-Mobile would, they are both GSM and if you pay full price, they could care less where you take it or what you do with it . You can even sell it overseas as GSM is pretty starndard Globally.
Sprint and Verzion are CDMA. If im sprint, IMO, I would not cut on a Verzion phone, I want you to purchase one of mine, I dont care what you paid for it. and vice versa.

well the carrier companies do that just for one and only reason. People don't care what kind of service they have anymore (basically because now it's almost standar for all the carrier services. Except if you live in a area where one carrier is working) Now all they want is the meanest, badest, sickest, phone there is on the market. We see that switch of interest with iphone. Att got soooooo many new lines cause of apple. I bet if apple knew that it would have that much of success. They would've sell the phone bythemselves. To all the carriers. Anyway i believe that's my thoughts about the new ETFS. Because now they try to get the best phones on the market. And since everybody would compete on that area. They just raise it up. As far the fraud that member Xenithflare said. I believe that the same companies are fraud! As member dsims7_2000 said, they told him that he had to pay the ETF even when he was off the contract. Now if it was somebody else he would've pay it and they wouldn't say anything to him. So they are the fraud. I know that because it happent to me before ;p

No, I can walk from AT&T anytime I want, free, after comversation with Management. I paid AT&T my debt for this phone. How do I know this......
I paid Sprint $130.00 when I left with Treo, assuming I would have bad credit and no one would want me although I had that phone 30 months, 6 past my contract.

at sprint we are only taking new accounts and upgrades no outright purchases from what i was told. and i heard radioshack is doing the same.
Just got back from my local Sprint store and was assured that I could purchase for full retail. $475 after tax. I just have to get there when they open at 7 on the 4th.

would be quite dissapointing if you get there and thats not true. us employees in florida have a evo meeting on the 28th to tell us how its going down, so im sticking with that.
I can't see sprint telling people I don't want upfront $450+ from anyone because I would rather sell it for $199.
i can see them saying hey i rather not sell it to you because your stuck on contract with us anyways, and say hey i want you guys to upgrade and stay with us and hey i want new customers.

Well 3 employees, including the manager, all confirmed it, so I'm pretty confident. I would make a scene if they refused to sell it to me after telling me to my face that they would, and since I've been with them for 8 years, so I think I would get my phone instantly.
At Radioshack you definitely can buy it outright. It is $499.99, but there is a trade in program, so you can bring in your old phone and put that trade in toward the purchase, making it cheaper than a Sprint corporate store.

I'm selling my Hero on eBay, where I will get about $200 for it. RadioShack will give you about $85. Tough choice.
i got my evo preorder from a radioshack manager who gave me his word he will refund my deposit if the radio shack full retail price is more than the sprint price. he even wrote it down and signed it, and said he would be there on june 4.
i will bring a copy of the sprint evo flier in on june 4, hopefully i can just get him to price match.

Help me understand...
Why would you want to pay $499 for a phone that
Question-1: What are the benefits of buying an Evo full price?
Question-2: Wouldn't Sprint still force you to upgrade to the Everything Data plan AND also charge you the $10 per month per Evo on the account?
I would be willing to consider paying full price if I can justify a Return-On-Investment starting after "X" months
Thanks...

[Q] Buy without contract?

Does anybody know where I could possibly buy this awesome phone without a contract? Ebay is the obvious answer but I was hoping for an etailer where I could put in a preorder.
Thanks.
Sprint will sell it without contract. $500. Reserve a copy.
You *might* have a problem with a representative not wanting to sell it to you off contract because they will miss out on the commission. If that happens just tell them it is a gift for a Sprint Customer(Your mom or whoever).

$500 is the unsubsidized price, so no worries.
Just letting you know, Sprint has put out orders to NOT sell this as a cold handset, you HAVE to activate the phone if you're buying it in store, even if you pay full retail. They want subscribers, not to take a loss on the handsets for no return.
So you're saying that I can't, as a current sprint subscriber, unbox MY phone at MY discretion?? The last thing I want is some monkey behind the desk unboxing my $500 device and leaving fingerprints all over it just because it needed to be activated before I left the store. This happened with my Evo and bothered the heck out of me; although I understand in that case as I was a new subscriber having a number ported over AND purchasing the device at a subsidized price (should still be able to activate the phone at my leisure but whatever). However, I should be able to purchase the device at "full" price, take it home, unbox it myself, and activate it through the established means since I'm already under contract and past my 30 trial period. They will be getting paid either way.
P.S. Unless activation refers to line activation, as opposed to phone activation. Big difference.
P.S.S. Is sprint's "subsidized off-contract" price of $499.99 (compared to $549.99 at, say, RS) only for new subscribers and/or upgraders? In any case, that "no cold handset" policy is about as clear as mud to me right now.

On an unrelated note, why would the price the unsubsidized version so that they are losing money on the hardware?

Unless a phone is factory unlocked or unlockable I don't see what the benefit of doing this would be. To my knowledge you can buy the phone from vendors like Best Buy without needing to activate the phone and just have it shipped to your house. Just be ready to shell out $649.00.
On an unrelated note, why would the price the unsubsidized version so that they are losing money on the hardware?

The low price is there to entice people who don't want to renew a contract to buy it from them as opposed to another vendor. This in conjunction with the "no cold phone sold" policy allows them to ensure that every Epic sold by them will either retain a current subscriber or add a new one so they will be making that money back. You can have a cold unactivated phone mailed to your house by another vendor but you will be spending more than $499 and won't have the added convenience of optionally having the purchase billed to your account.
According to RS, Samsung's SRP is $699.99.

What about a new customer who just wants to pay full price for the phone, pick a plan and pay month-to-month? Are you saying this is not possible? He would have to make a two-year commitment even with an unsubsidized phone? That makes no sense.

I was speaking in terms of existing sprint customer, so my bad. That's a very good question and I'm not sure. But even the unsubsidized price isn't really unsubsidized. $699.99 is the SRP so even at the $499.99 price point they are taking a loss. From all indications, the $499.99 price point is for existing customers under contract that are not eligible for an upgrade. It wouldn't make sense for Sprint to take a loss on a phone knowing that they didn't have that customer locked into a contract to recoup the money. With that said, the only way I would see sprint allowing new subscribers to enter into a month-by-month agreement would be if they either sold phones at their cost or significantly increased the monthly service rates and I haven't seen that, personally.

You can't pay "month-to-month" on Sprint. If you open a new line, you must sign a new 2-year contract. I believe every carrier except for T-Mobile does this.
So if I am an existing sprint customer and I wanted to buy this phone at full price and give it as a gift to another sprint customer I won't be able to because I can't leave the store without activating it?

Sprint increasing 3G data plan pricing by $10/mo

WTF is this all about ?
http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/18/sprint-increasing-new-3g-data-plan-contract-pricing-by-10-call/
The nation's third-largest carrier just announced that it's tacking on an extra monthly $10 "premium data" charge to its 3G Everything data plans.
Now only if my Evo could operate at 3g speeds that would be freaking awesome.
FYI: 70Kbps is not acceptable for 3g speeds, wtf.
Learn to read. It's only for new customers and new smartphone activations via upgrades. If you don't upgrade then you don't get the charge.

Still a slap in the face. That means when your contract is up and you buy that new phone, you are also paying 10$ more (can anyone confirm if this is added onto the 10$ we pay for 4g?).
I'm pretty sure if you have a 4G phone that comes with a $10 charge anyway, you'll just keep paying the same additional $10. I think this extra $10 is only for people on 3G phones. So basically, everyone's paying that additional $10 now.
The "4g" fee now applies to all smartphones, that's all.

it can't get much clearer then this people, so no if you have a 4g phone you won't be paying $20, you only be paying the $10 that we already are, this additional fee is just for regular 3g phones.
Yeah. The are starting to see $ signs and possibly getting greedy. I'm going to follow this thread so I can see the same people claim that it's all lies.
The funny thing is I was talking to a rep yesterday about the new upgrade policy and brought up the $10 premium data. I asked her how come an HTC Hero doesn't have the charge and it accesses the same internet and it considered close to the Evo aside from 4G. I even told her that I would expect Sprint to make that charge mandatory on all phones being that they are seeing they can get away with it with current Evo owners.
That's the price you pay for a smartphone nowadays.
Wouldn't a better marketing strategy be to just incrrease the cost of the Everyting data plan to $79.99 and $139.99? Even with the increase Sprint's plans are the best out there. Extra charges piss me off though.

that would make more since honestly, but then what about the 4g phones then, lol, since a single line for the evo is already 79.99, that would be like tacking on another $10 on that so they could say it's a whatever fee, then someone ends up paying 89.99, cause they didn't realize they are getting screwed more then normal, though i would hope and think sprint would say the evo would only be 79.99 as any other smartphone would be.
So I guess its clear now that the David Blaine thing on the 7th is for making more of your money disappear along with premium status.

Well all you "4g premium fee" complainers. Not so unfair you have to pay an extra 10 bucks anymore? LOL. Part of me is wondering if this is their way to make the 4g phone lineup more appealing..."you're gonna pay a premium anyways, why not have the ability to use 4g just in case we decide to roll it out in your city...as long as we don't go broke before then."

Funny, when I was on the phone with a Sprint rep last month getting my unlocked EVO activated the lady said they can activate phone 'as long as its labeled with the Sprint logo'. I figured she was wrong or lying but I just wanted to get off the phone.
It's about to get worse. There are rumors that Sprint is going to drop the Premier Upgrade every 12 months program. That they will NOT give Sprint Premiere customers the rebates until their two year contract is up. IF this is the case I will be leaving Sprint as soon as they announce this. They just can't get out of their own way. One of the main reasons I stay with Sprint is because of their annual upgrades. It would not shock me to see Sprint file bankruptcy if they start to implement all these idiotic plans.
http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=216413
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/58531?start=0&tstart=0&reqsorting=dec
The thing that sucks about this and might be the reason why they just didn't add $10 to plans is that corporate or work discounts do not apply to these fees and only towards the base plan. I was mad when they took the discounts off the $19.99 additional lines.
I won't leave Sprint over this because they are still cheaper, especially with our work discount but I guess I have no reason not to get my wife a 4G phone. I was hoping to save some money since we get 4G at work but not at home and she wouldn't use 4G anyway.
However, if this happens in addition to the Sprint Premier changes, I am going to get really mad for getting screwed in two places.
As long as my data is still unlimited i'll be happy. I don't come anywhere near 2gb or 5gb but if they start screwing around i'll say screw it and buy a damn contract free phone. I like my mobile internet but what they're all doing now is getting a little silly.
They have to raise prices as needed but they should've just upped the whole plan without a $10 tack on. The whole point of Sprint's pricing scheme is to keep it simple for people. That was one of the biggest reasons I came to sprint this year. That and the EVO of course

Evo 3D is $469 off contract.

Soo I found that the evo would be $469 no contract. Now idk if its just me but imo id buy that over a 2yr anyday. No matter how u look at it. You'll be able to upgrade and sell the phone anytime u wish.
I'm getting the sgs2. But I was wondering hat everyone else thought about my opinion.

I dont get what is so bad about renewing contract?
Lets say I renewed my contract. I pay $200 for the phone, and want to cancel my contract two months down the road, I pay an additional $150 cancelation, so the total I have into the phone is $350 vs the $460 full price.
If you are going to be on Sprint anyway, why not renew the contract?

The way I look at it renewing the contract is no big deal, Sprint has the best prices when you look at the unlimited data.
If down the road they do jack the prices then you can terminate your contract with no early termination fee anyways since it's considered a change in contract terms and conditions.
What are you going to do, go to Verizon and be capped or AT&T and really get hamstrung?
My wife alone blows through at least 3gb a month in data streaming Pandora at work since their computers are locked down.
Well the whole idea is about what phone u have. Regardless of our plans.
As for early termination, are u allowed to keep the phone if u terminate it early? (Signed new 2yr when buying a phone?)

If you search u can find deals if you are patient. I got the epic on a deal for 58 bucks (including shipping) with a 2 year contract. At that I could sell the phone and make a profit with the penalty for the contract.

just saw this on SD and preorderd the phone.. 469 is not that bad off contract..
I actually just bought two Epics newly referb'd for $200 a pop because I didn't want to renew my contract.
I did this for two reasons:
1.) Didn't want to give up my upgrade because of the SG2 or another phone that hasn't been released or announced yet.
2.) Concerned about Sprint's future between the big changes in the coverage map that occurred after March and the 20 billion dollar possible investment with Lightsquared that has "supposed" GPS interference issues--I'm not signing a 2 year until I get that warm fuzzy feeling again.
Besides, I feel that the beginning of the summer isn't when you renew the contract/phone, the fall is after knowing what's left for the end of the year, not much gets released in Q1 so IMO early Q4 is the sweet spot, so you can compare what's out there to what's left to be released.
The Evo and Epic had plenty of bugs in the beginning that I don't mind waiting a month after or so release to see what gets fixed and how long it takes.
I'm not switching from Sprint anytime soon, so I imagine that my renewal of contracts wont go in vain.

But if you think about it, the Evo and Epic came out within two months or so of each other, and they were the two biggest phones that sprint had all year. I will almost bet that they dont have any drastic changes after the sgs2 until next summer, and I will have another upgrade then. Heck, even if they do have another change, I will sell me epic, and my sgs2 if need be, and upgrade.
So the real issue is those of us that have the Epic that haven't passed our 1 year mark yet. Will Sprint let us renew a 2year to get the cheaper price? no way am i gonna fork out almost $500 for a phone just to have the newest.
JD
I'm actually quite with my Epic. Its probably going to take a 4.3" S-amoled screen with a keyboard to get me to replace it.

If you search u can find deals if you are patient. I got the epic on a deal for 58 bucks (including shipping) with a 2 year contract. At that I could sell the phone and make a profit with the penalty for the contract.

You can sell your used epic for more than the $300 ETF plus $58 (plus sellers fees if you go to ebay)? Maybe you can net $5 if you're lucky. You'll more likely lose $50-100.

ETF isn't $300 I think it's 200 or 150.

Your're right, appears I was thinking AT&T/Verizon ETF. Sprint is a lot more reasonable.
Still though, used epics are only selling for avg $200...

You actually make a valid point... I have it preordered for 469 but reconsidering.
I am one year into contract. Wirefly/sprint is saying im not eligible for upgrade though
Sprint has determined that you are not eligible for an upgrade at this time

But that's not including the monthly payments for service
I would just buy it straight up 460$ and use the hotspot from the epic to run the evo3d

I ordered it on T-Mobile out of desperation bc I didnt want to wait another 3 weeks for google to get it in. Ill have it on monday and find out how much t-mobile has put their crap on the phone. Anyways when i agreed to the new contract the etf read to me over the phone was said to be up to 200 dollars. I would tell you that if you dont return the equipment they will charge you the etf and the retail price of the phone.
What sense would it make for T-Mobile to allow you to do this? More than likely, they're going to force you to pay full price for the device as well.

I don't see why not, there's nothing in their terms that forbids it. I just wanted to see if anyone else has tried it
Yes, so you'll pay $199 plus $200 ETF plus first month of service plus tax and activation fee. So it's about the same as buying it outright.

I got the phone through T-Mobile. I can confirm there is no T-Mobile bloatware on it. It is pure Android 4.2 goodness

I think it also affects your credit if you cancel the contract.
phone bills doesnt count towards credit score. I would of had beautiful credit score by now
if you cancel they charge you there full retail price
My old vzw is on my credit report

someone on reddit did it, so i followed suit. i'll end up paying a bit more with the first month's cost, but other than that, if you sign up for it with a classic plan and not a value plan(that means you'd be paying for the device full retail or with month payments), you'll just be paying $200+$200ETF+Tax+$35 Activation+first month of service, but that not much more than you'd be paying besides, and you're getting the service, so...
I haven't actually cancelled the contract yet as i was just planning to do it online, but their website has been slow today, and it doesnt seem that i can fully access my account online yet.
well for all that 430 might just buy it outright save yourself the hassle

This is for the impatient I guess.
You guys really need to become a bit more patient. I'm one of the biggest Android enthusiasts out there and I'm without a phone because my Galaxy Nexus is being repaired but I'm still waiting despite back order status.
I hate to be a little political and tell people how they should be spending their money but if you wanted to piss it away by paying about an extra hundred dollars for a phone you can get readily on eBay for about $50 less or you know, just wait like everyone else, you could've donated that amount and saved a fair number of lives in Africa or insert other third world country.

I believe that problem does not apply to me. Giving people money blindly does not guarantee that their lives will improve. Those countries need infrastructure, not money.

No, it won't. If you pay the ETF, you've complied with the terms of the contract. It would only be reported to a credit agency if you refused to pay the ETF and they decided to send it to report you to the credit bureaus.

The only way you can cancel is by calling customer service. You can't do it online or at a T-Mobile store.
