[Kernel] 2.6.29 kernel for AOSP roms - Droid Eris Android Development

Hey guys, i kinda felt bad for you guys, how you guys still don't have a true aosp build (minus the crappy froyo sdk which isn't built for any target). so i decided to make you guys a kernel that should work on your phones. i'm only gunna supply the zImage for you guys, if you want to know how i got the touchscreen to work, all i did was take the drivers/input/touchscreen/synaptics_i2c_rmi.c from cm-kernel and put it into my kernel source. well devs, have fun with this. you guys can now make a real cyanogenmod or aosp rom. This kernel is OC'd at 768 mhz. I'm only gunna supply the zImage, you devs make this work for your roms
Thanks Toastcfh for getting overclock to work on msm7k android devices

oh man, now I can smell true AOSP cooking up right now somewhere in here... time to get rid of those chunky SenseUI. Dont get me wrong, There's nothing wrong with Sense UI, it's matter of personal preference and I'm just old school from G1 and loyal fan of AOSP build.

You are here making noise, butthurt that your rom didnt hit the news like Punkaos's did, and now you want to cause more drama. Don't thank him, his kernel doesn't work. The Touchscreen drivers are not right.
Are you violating the Linux license by not releasing the source? Kanging from 1000s of developers! How awful. I see no credit given!

why would i need to re-release source for your kernel. does that make sense. all i did was edit two files in the source. those files are on toastcfh's github. i don't need to re-release the source. that would be a waste of time and effort. please, if you don't like me, just pm me and we'll settle things.
also, i'm pretty sure this works unless i forgot to recompile your source after i changed the file
has anyone else tried it besides the preteen who blatantly has some sort of bias against me?

Thanks darchstar! I've always been envious of your AOSP roms.

I'm not scared. They have the kernel we need, they get all the fancy "shmancy" phones before we do. They won't share it and I'm pretty sure I know why so if they can't take a little poke then I suppose they should "bugger off!"

uhh... i'm a bit confused about the whole kernel thing regarding the hero.
i know that htc released the source code for the kernel... but i'm assuming that was the 2.6.27 right?
so i know that android 2.1 uses .29 to work, so how did the GSM hero people get that kernel and why don't we have a working .29 kernel for our phones?
please clarify?

I would like to try to put together a custom kernel for my Hero. But I am having trouble locating the .29 source. I synced up with http://android.git.kernel.org/kernel/common but that is the .27 branch. And most of the other stuff looks to be .27 as well. Is the only place to get the .29 source from the GSM hero? Thanks for any help.

I believe that is the only place to get the source. HTC hasn't released the cdma source yet. Is that our issue? Isn't it possible to use the gsm source?
found something helpful out
so when i run 'make menuconfig' front eh root directory of the HTC released .27 Hero source, under system type "Qualcomm MSM" is the system type. So when browsing through the link that I posted to the kernel git repo I found that there is a MSM branch, and it looks like it have some references to .29 and later kernel verions. Ill explore further and let you guys know.

Unless it's specifically says "CDMA" or "Sprint", it's most likely for the GSM version.

porting the kernel is proving a serious undertaking for me... learning C and hacking linux kernel code at the same time = no fun. damn .29
the SDK level 7 (2.1) was released on android's website. maybe we can get an aosp and then try to shove the .29 kernel as well as the sense ui onto it. or, just try to get flipz' 2.1 fully working.

Any Developer Interested in A Official Cyanogenmod Rom?

I noticed lately that the supported devices officially for cyanogenmod is getting bigger and bigger, so maybe one of you guys can talk to cyanogen bout joinin his team.. i remember from his website he had this to say recently:
"A lot of people ask me about adding support for their phone, but we can only support phones that we actually own. The CM team is always looking for new hackers to join up with us to add support for their favorite device. Get in touch with me if you’d like to help."
I know that there is roms pretty much quality and as up to date as an official cyanogenmod, but these roms are only limited by the website its on. unfortunately not everyone knows about xda (shocking thought, since im on here daily).
i hope the big devs for the eris reads this, for im sure its a good idea.....
Honestly the Roms that get handed out here are better than Cyanogen in that the people that make them implement their own tweaks inside the core of the rom that make them better. I personally WOULD use an official Cyanogen rom because who knows maybe its more stable and all, but still.
Since he already plays the role with his kernel and vendor tree, I vote for Canop
Canop for Cyanogenmod!

I vote Conap too! lol
I'm not really sure of much added benefit from "official" cm releases other than the ability to flash a nightly build every day. Most of the devs build their rom directly from cm source or port the nightles. With the way it is now you have a choice of many custom cm roms whereas some devices with "official" cm support only have the cm release.

I've wondered about this too, but like others have said... We are probably better off the way it is now or at least not any worse off. The Hero builds are relatively easy to port and building from source has been worked out pretty well, so it doesn't really matter if we have an 'official' one.
+1 for Conap.

HTC releases source code for Legend Froyo update

No clue if this kernal will help the eris world out. but just wanted to post it just in case:
from:
http://developer.htc.com/
http://dl4.htc.com/RomCode/Source_and_Binaries/legend-MR-2.6.32-g732a780.tar.gz
I believe(may be wrong) tenzo and tazz are working on this kernel right now. Trying to back port to the .29 kernel. If they can get it working it should fix the only remaining issues with sense froyo roms, the camera and bt audio.
Sent from my ERIS using XDA App
The 2.6.32 kernel source is out for several devices now. It is my understanding that we can use this two different ways...
1) use one of the 2.6.32 kernels as a base and forward port the Eris specific stuff from 2.6.29 to the new base
2) use the Eris 2.6.29 kernel as a base and backport any fixes from the 2.6.32 kernels
It seems to me that #2 is mostly what's going on now, although there has been some work on the Hero CDMA with using the Wildfire 2.6.32 kernel as a base.
Some other devices actually have 2.6.34 and 2.6.35 kernels, but until we get a kernel dev with the knowledge, time, and motivation to do such things... We are stuck with grabbing commits from other kernel devs using method #2.
Again, this is how I understand things. I might be wrong, but I don't think so.
Digging around in the kernel code is good, geeky fun. I've learned a lot just by jumping in over and over again and not worrying about how much I know or don't know at any given time.

I have actually forked the cm 2.6.35 kernel and looked at it and played with it a little. The issue is like with most things in life: time and motivation. As time goes on and Android progresses on to newer version, someone might have to do something like this in order to keep the Eris up to date.
I would love to work that out. It's going to be time consuming even for someone who has the knowledge and experience doing it. Unfortunately, I'll probably be adding a programming class to my schedule in January, so I'll have less Android time. Fortunately, it's a C programming class, so maybe by May I'll have a better understanding of the kernel source! (And, I'll have my Eris at least through Oct. of next year when I get my upgrade pricing.)
Rock on!

Man, I get no respect.
Backporting is much easier and really the most appropriate engineering approach. Let's just say the other way around is a more hackish approach.
I guess I'll see what I can do on seeing what can be done with getting performance based aspects into .29.
Thanks for putting this link up. Didn't know work was already being done. You guys rock!

If you look at the source for the Decafuct kernels -
https://github.com/Conap30/htc_kernel_desirec_cfs
https://github.com/Conap30/htc_kernel_desirec_bfs
You'll see that is what Conap, Decad3nce, etc. have been doing. There are also bits like camera fixes, for instance...
I guess I'm pointing those out because they might be a better place to start than starting with stock, unless you just like starting fresh. (I do when I really know what I'm doing.)
Thanks for helping!

[GPL][DEV-Kernel][WIP] 2.6.35 for desirec (DEAD?)

I'm no longer working on this. I've tried, failed, and moved on. It seems that some other folks have had some success. Maybe they will continue on. Between work, family, college, etc. it's obvious that I'm getting nothing done on this.
This is an attempt at taking the work being done for the heroc here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=911828 and porting it to the Eris.
Honestly, I know enough to be dangerous and that's about it. The HeroC (sobe and those thanked in the post linked to above) folks and those upstream from there are doing most of the work. So, thank you to them.
If anyone would like to help, please do. That's the main reason that I'm posting this now. The kernel doesn't even compile at this point, much less boot. (It's hard to boot something that doesn't exist. )
Source: https://github.com/gnarlyc/cm-kernel
So far, here's what I've done.
1) forked sobe's repo
2) copied the heroc board files, renamed the copies to *desirec*, and changed all instances of HEROC to DESIREC and heroc to desirec inside the files
3) started removing heroc touchscreen stuff and adding desirec touchscreen stuff
Why am I doing this?
1) learn more about kernels
2) use some that programming knowledge that I'm supposedly learning in class
3) get an updated kernel for the Eris
very nice, i do wish you luck.
Very good. Glad to see you working on this.

Any work still going on n with this?
This is what we would need to port over the new Hero Sensable Gingerbread right? Man if we could get this working, I would be about the happiest guy in the world
My final exam is on Wednesday of next week. So, I can promise that I will put much more effort into after that. I can't promise to get it working, but I'll definitely put a lot more time in. As I said before, if anyone wants to jump in and help, feel free. There's already one other person (breber) helping, but I think he's been in the same boat as me. So... Hopefully, he'll be able to help more after classes are over too.
Kernel updates are pretty much the only updates I ever care about.
Just an update. This hasn't been worked on as much as I hoped. However, I've had help from breber. Actually, he's made much more progress than I did. The kernel not only compiles, but it boots too! As soon as we can get the touchscreen working, it might even be usable.
Here's the current source.
https://github.com/breber/cm-kernel
If anyone else wants to take a stab at it, feel free. Our time is somewhat limited.
I've played around with adding the capella 3602 stuff back in, but it didn't seem to help with the touchscreen issue. The TS is one of the few components that are different between the HeroC and Eris.

Here's the current source.

If anyone else wants to take a stab at it, feel free. Our time is somewhat limited.
I've played around with adding the capella 3602 stuff back in, but it didn't seem to help with the touchscreen issue. The TS is one of the few components that are different between the HeroC and Eris.
