Why was the Google Nexus One Dropped? - EVO 4G General

Was the Google Nexus one dropped because it would have not required the $10.00 Fee as the EVO does? How many people would have bought the Nexus over the EVO not having to pay $10.00 a month? Also I keeping hearing it is only $10.00 well I have a family plan so they need to change it to it is only $40.00. That is a lot of money.

Because the evo is coming out and the $10 is because the evo has 4g in it

The same reason that VZW turned down the Nexus One: A far superior device was being released right at the same time, so the Nexus One would have been obsolete and a distraction.

Because the Evo is going to be Sprint's big Android phone. They want amazing sales records. Adding the N1 around the same time as the Evo would mess up their sales and push for 4G coverage/users.

I would rather think it would be the Nexus one would have no carrier specficate modifications. Like froyo's tethering option, while sprint is trying to charge thrity a month for something that you can do right out of the box

Pre-order from Radio Shack starts tomorrow $249 no rebate

My RadioShack guy just called me today and they'll be taking pre-orders for Epic 4G. You need to buy $50 gift card to reserve the phone and it could be used towards the Epic on 8/31 when you pick it up.
I hate dealing with rebates, I reserved two Epic's already.

I had that issue with my first phone, it was free via 3rd party but I had to pay ~$45 for activation, still cheaper then phone. I called sprint because for some reason I was charged $.02 for roaming, and I wanted to make sure it was a mistake because I didn't think Sprint charged roaming.
Anyway, Sprint noticed I paid the activation fee and credited it to my account because "Sprint doesn't charge for activation, period."
This was 2 years ago though, still more then worth it with the $50 gift card.
I'll prefer to hear from BestBuy (Mobile) and rather get it from them. Too many horror stories about the Shack and inventory levels when it comes to replacements and such.
I need to handle and play with it first at the store before rushing in anyway...
I really want this but that $10 add on for the so called "premium data" will probably keep me away from it. Even though it's only $10 if I end up having 5 devices that would raise my bill $50. I use 5 times the data on my palm pre than my wifes EVO so I don't know where they get this premium data charge from.

Yes it does but I'm just looking down the road. Are they going to start this with every new smartphone by using the premium data excuse to get an extra 10 out of you? 4 out of my 5 lines are smartphones so when I want to upgrade I'm thinking they will require premium data plans for all new smartphones. It does suck because I really want the Epic but that would be $20 more a month if you count the EVO I already have.
So, I'm debating which route to go for the Epic. Sprint Store vs RadioShack vs Best Buy.
I know that the MSRP is $499.99, -$150 upgrade discount, -$100 MIR, making it $249.99.
I've already reserved one at the local Sprint store. What I'm wondering is which option would I benefit from an instant rebate vs having to deal with the mail in rebate, and also, which option would allow me to split the cost over several billing cycles as opposed to it all up front. I've done that with prior upgrades, but always by ordering over the phone from Sprint directly.
If I walk in to the Sprint store on 8/31, I'd think they'd be able to bill my account, but will I have to deal with the mail in rebate hassle?
If I pre-order from RadioShack or Best Buy, it's $249.99 out the door, but would they be able to do the just bill my account part?
Thanks in advance for any advice, thoughts, information, or personal experiences in similar upgrade situations.

Nope, just called sprint and they told me it's per line not per account.
I called my local Radio Shack and they put on this waiting list tonight (Thursday night). They just took my name and phone number and said I was #1 on the list. I don't trust not having to put down a deposit, so I'll stop by there tomorrow and put down the deposit if necessary. I want to make sure that I'm really on the preorder list.
How much will it be if your not due for an upgrade?
It's 10 dollars per line for every 4G phone, the 10 bucks goes towards the cost of the 4G build out so I really don't mind, I have (not my friend or my cousin, me) I have 2 4G phones on my account and 2 non 4G lines I pay 10 dollars extra per 4G phone the non-4G phones have no extra cost associated with them.
Radio Shack has a preorder available online

Sprint $10 'premium data' to apply to ALL new smartphone activations starting Jan 30.

"Sprint will increase its postpaid rates by applying a $10 per month Premium Data add-on charge to activations of smartphones beginning Jan. 30. The charge will assist Sprint in offering simple and affordable unlimited plans for its customers while maintaining a wireless network able to meet the growing appetite for a richer mobile experience. Subscribers with smartphones will still receive the best value in wireless, with features such as Any Mobile, Anytime offered nationwide only by Sprint."

I'm with you. Sprint's "Just Because" fee for fake 4G is crazy already but now for 3G?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
the thing that upsets me is they aren't changing the prices of plans, so they can still advertise the 69.99 rate for "unlimited" data. they need to just call it a 4g fee or raise the overall price of plans. I don't like the idea of charging an additional fee for a feature that's supposed to be "unlimited" in their plan rate.
That's so messed up that's what turned me away from the evo and epic was the extra fee when I wouldn't have 4g in my area anyway thank God I'm locked in for two years now I'm really going to tether as much as possible just to piss them off lmao
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Sprint actually improved their company image over the past year thanks to Android, but I think this will destroy most of, if not everything, they worked for. What a shame. In the future I will definitely consider T-Mobile as they are almost the same price and I think their HSPA+ is a much better concept than 4G.
I look at this as another excuse to get that HTC Evo upgrade
glad i went to virgin mobile. lol JK.. even with the new fee its still cheaper.. I just wish sprint would have just came out and said.. hey listen we gotta raise X fee to help improve our network or this or that. etc.. with that said I would be mad if I was still on sprint.lol
but 25 bucks a month is too hard to pass up. sure i have a crappy phone ( intercept ) but im sure virgin will get something better down the road.. etc..
But this will impact sprint in a negative light again. unless they do something. lol oh well enjoy your 80 dollar plan without 4g. lol ( for those who dont get it that is )

All of y'all stop acting like cheap bastards.. Even with the extra $10 were still paying WAY less then Verizon.. For 2 lines I'm paying $132 unlimited everything... The homie who has a blackberry on Verizon is paying that exact same thing... by itself lol...

Extra $240, since it's a monthly fee over a 2 year contract. People never think of total cost of ownership when it comes to cell phones.
Yes, still cheaper than Verizon and AT&T.
This is the aftermath from the lawsuit in which the people filed against the fake 4g charge. Sprint said the $10 wasn't for the 4g, but for the more capable phones. Now to retaliate they are charging the fee across the board...

This.
Basically, the way I look at it, their requiring an "Everything data" plan for a smartphone should have covered this, and they should have increased the base price of the plan (for new customers only) instead of instituting this bull**** addon fee.
Second, I have no desire to move to a 4G phone - my Hero does everything I need it to. If I lose or otherwise need to replace my phone, now my bill goes up $10, even though I will be using the EXACT same phone in the EXACT same config? Since I have a family plan with 5 lines, that's a potential for $50/month.
Lastly, doing away with the 1 year upgrades for Premium members is the final straw. In the last two days, without me gaining a single iota of value, I am looking at an additional $50/month for the next 17 months (contract is up in May 2012) in addition to missing out on the $150 upgrade credit for 5 phones. This is on top of the changes they made for corporate discounts in August (which is costing me $15 more a month).
I'll be shopping for a new carrier in short order, even if it does cost me more. I'm tired of Sprint changing the rules and making up bull**** explanations, just so Hesse can have a bigger yacht.
Man sprint is on a roll this week..lol
oh well come 2012 its not gonna matter, lol
is it just me or are people missing the point?

WTF is this all about ?
http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/18/sprint-increasing-new-3g-data-plan-contract-pricing-by-10-call/
The nation's third-largest carrier just announced that it's tacking on an extra monthly $10 "premium data" charge to its 3G Everything data plans.
Now only if my Evo could operate at 3g speeds that would be freaking awesome.
FYI: 70Kbps is not acceptable for 3g speeds, wtf.
Learn to read. It's only for new customers and new smartphone activations via upgrades. If you don't upgrade then you don't get the charge.

Still a slap in the face. That means when your contract is up and you buy that new phone, you are also paying 10$ more (can anyone confirm if this is added onto the 10$ we pay for 4g?).
I'm pretty sure if you have a 4G phone that comes with a $10 charge anyway, you'll just keep paying the same additional $10. I think this extra $10 is only for people on 3G phones. So basically, everyone's paying that additional $10 now.
The "4g" fee now applies to all smartphones, that's all.

it can't get much clearer then this people, so no if you have a 4g phone you won't be paying $20, you only be paying the $10 that we already are, this additional fee is just for regular 3g phones.
Yeah. The are starting to see $ signs and possibly getting greedy. I'm going to follow this thread so I can see the same people claim that it's all lies.
The funny thing is I was talking to a rep yesterday about the new upgrade policy and brought up the $10 premium data. I asked her how come an HTC Hero doesn't have the charge and it accesses the same internet and it considered close to the Evo aside from 4G. I even told her that I would expect Sprint to make that charge mandatory on all phones being that they are seeing they can get away with it with current Evo owners.
That's the price you pay for a smartphone nowadays.
Wouldn't a better marketing strategy be to just incrrease the cost of the Everyting data plan to $79.99 and $139.99? Even with the increase Sprint's plans are the best out there. Extra charges piss me off though.

that would make more since honestly, but then what about the 4g phones then, lol, since a single line for the evo is already 79.99, that would be like tacking on another $10 on that so they could say it's a whatever fee, then someone ends up paying 89.99, cause they didn't realize they are getting screwed more then normal, though i would hope and think sprint would say the evo would only be 79.99 as any other smartphone would be.
So I guess its clear now that the David Blaine thing on the 7th is for making more of your money disappear along with premium status.

Well all you "4g premium fee" complainers. Not so unfair you have to pay an extra 10 bucks anymore? LOL. Part of me is wondering if this is their way to make the 4g phone lineup more appealing..."you're gonna pay a premium anyways, why not have the ability to use 4g just in case we decide to roll it out in your city...as long as we don't go broke before then."

Funny, when I was on the phone with a Sprint rep last month getting my unlocked EVO activated the lady said they can activate phone 'as long as its labeled with the Sprint logo'. I figured she was wrong or lying but I just wanted to get off the phone.
It's about to get worse. There are rumors that Sprint is going to drop the Premier Upgrade every 12 months program. That they will NOT give Sprint Premiere customers the rebates until their two year contract is up. IF this is the case I will be leaving Sprint as soon as they announce this. They just can't get out of their own way. One of the main reasons I stay with Sprint is because of their annual upgrades. It would not shock me to see Sprint file bankruptcy if they start to implement all these idiotic plans.
http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=216413
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/58531?start=0&tstart=0&reqsorting=dec
The thing that sucks about this and might be the reason why they just didn't add $10 to plans is that corporate or work discounts do not apply to these fees and only towards the base plan. I was mad when they took the discounts off the $19.99 additional lines.
I won't leave Sprint over this because they are still cheaper, especially with our work discount but I guess I have no reason not to get my wife a 4G phone. I was hoping to save some money since we get 4G at work but not at home and she wouldn't use 4G anyway.
However, if this happens in addition to the Sprint Premier changes, I am going to get really mad for getting screwed in two places.
As long as my data is still unlimited i'll be happy. I don't come anywhere near 2gb or 5gb but if they start screwing around i'll say screw it and buy a damn contract free phone. I like my mobile internet but what they're all doing now is getting a little silly.
They have to raise prices as needed but they should've just upped the whole plan without a $10 tack on. The whole point of Sprint's pricing scheme is to keep it simple for people. That was one of the biggest reasons I came to sprint this year. That and the EVO of course

If you had the opportunity, would you trade your Vibrant for a Nexus S (for free)?

Let me preface this post by saying it is not about what phone is better or that you hate Samsung blah blah blah.
The fact is, I have the opportunity to trade my Vibrant for a Nexus S with no money out of pocket. I have to do this within a week or two, otherwise I'd wait for a dual core or the PSPhone.
The best phone available (in my opinion) is the Nexus S because it's a legacy phone for Google, which means it'll be privy to new OS releases.
That said, would you do it? Yes, no, why?

I'm adding a family line for a family member. She doesn't care what phone she gets so I figure:
1) Active Nexus S for her for $218 (with tax) + activation fee
2) Buy a cheapo prepaid or craigslist phone $50 ish
3) Sell Vibrant on craigslist/fleabay for $300 - $325 ish
4) Use the difference to buy a 6 pack of Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA

I originally used the lack of SD as the reason I didn't want a Nexus S. Then I really looked at how much memory I was using. Only 12GB of the 16GB on the Vibrant's internal. And I don't even watch movies or listen to the music that is on there (ended up getting a rooted Nook Color for that).

Um, what?
Why does it matter if I'm under contract?
I'm activating a legit 5th line on my account for the Nexus S. Then I'm taking my sim card and putting it in the Nexus S. I'll take the sim card associated to the Nexus S and put it in the cheapo prepaid.
Then I'll go online, let mytmobile detect my current phones, and remove the data plan from my 5th line.
The NS has zero rebates. I only have to activate it with a data plan. No where in the T&C does it say I need to keep the data plan for X amount of time.

I believe they changed that and you'll get hit with an ETF if you drop the data plan before your contract period is up.
edit: Here's the relevant bit from the current T&C: "Some Devices require maintaining certain features or Services (e.g. a data plan) as part of your Rate Plan, and cancelling them before the end of your Term will result in an Early Termination Fee."

edit: Here's the relevant bit from the current T&C: "Some Devices require maintaining certain features or Services (e.g. a data plan) as part of your Rate Plan, and cancelling them before the end of your Term will result in an Early Termination Fee."

Does Best Buy charge a secondary ETF? Normally third party resellers only add the ETF if you cancel, not if you change plans. I've done this plan a few times (hence 4 lines on my account).

in order for the NS to cost $200 you have to get a data plan with it....unless you are not under contract on the vibrant then you can swap plan...

If I wasn't under contract with the Vibrant, I could just do an upgrade on my line.
I talked to a BB rep via chat. He said I just need to keep the data plan on the line as long as the phone is on that same line. Well, technically that line wouldn't have the Nexus S on it any more....

OK, you all got me paranoid so I googled this question.
Best Buy does NOT have a secondary ETF.
I know they've withheld rebates because users have changed features on their plans that are required to get the rebate, but the NS is $200 outright.
Keep in mind Nexus S does not do 720P, that's the sole reason I haven't purchased it. Per Supercurio its a hardware limitation of the SoC

YES! If it's me. I would trade it.

I totally agree with you. Storage memory is not an issue with me.
I had the Nexus S for 4 weeks last month, and boy, I really loved it. I love Gingerbread for it is very fast and very snappy. I love the curve glass screen, it's beautiful. The touch screen is very responsive. I got stronger signal with the Nexus S compare to with my Vibrant. Even though, it's only 3G, but surfing the web is very fast. Pictures load up real fast in Facebook, video clips load up real fast in Youtube. GPS and navigation is very accurate. Battery life is about 6 hrs of moderate use. I have no complaint for it except one bug, it's intermittently reboot itself during active calls. This has been fixed by Google, thought.
I bought it without contract with the intension to re-sell my Vibrant. But now my Vibrant is rooted with stable, working ROM thanks to Master. I decided to return it because I'm stuck with the Vibrant being on a 2-year contract; and because I also wanted to wait for the new, incoming phones with dual-core and 4G, etc .... But if I have the opportunity to trade my Vibrant for a Nexus S evenly, I absolutely would do so right away.

I'm not talking about a secondary ETF, I'm talking about T-Mobile themselves. When Best Buy activate that line with T-Mobile, you're agreeing to keep data on the line per the terms of the T-Mobile T&C.
From what I remember, that requirement stays on the line regardless of what phone you change it to later on.
Absolutely YES
I would trade my vibrant and a nexus s for some Dogfish Head raison d'etre. Wait. Is it too late to change the topic of this thread..?

For those with sero.. can we upgrade anywhere else but sprint

It kind of sucks that they make it so hard for us to upgrade our phones anywhere else but through sprint. Anyone have any luck upgrading your line ans getting a new phone anywhere else?..

I tried just about every store I could think of when I was upgrading to the epic with no luck. I was close when I got best buy to order one for me online. I got a tracking number and everything, but then somebody (sprint?) put a stop on the order and intercepted the delivery (seems like a lot of trouble just to stop me from buying a phone). I also tried radioshack, bestbuy store, walmart, and wirefly with no luck. I gave up and bought it in the sprint store.
You could always give it a try. Maybe you'll be that one to slip through the crack.
UPDATE: I've been doing some reading online, and some people have had luck ordering online as long as no plan changes are required. When I upgraded to the epic, they had to add the premium data which was a plan change.
Online where? Everywhere I try asks me to switch to the regular plan

Just go off the phone with letstalk. Basically they can't do anything with my plan. Basically sprint doesn't allow them to sell their phones at the discounted price unless the activate the phone one their most recent plans. Basically sprint is trying to phase out Sero.. that's BS..

Yup, Sero plans have to be upgraded through either the business accounts number or at a corporate Sprint store. That's actually an improvement over the way it used to be, when you could only handle SERO upgrades through the business accounts phone number.
If it's too much hassle you always have the option of converting to a standard account.

Is this for the newer (past year) switch to paying $30 + $10 + $10... wondering if there is any diff between the new and old sero plans for upgrades.

Its not a matter of being too much hassle its just the price of he phone is so much cheaper when not dealing with sprint .. I guess its a trade off for paying 700+ less per contract than the average sprint customer.

Yup, those super cheap prices are because the seller is eating some of their commission to cut the price.

Yup again, you can't have an android phone on an old SERO account, (I tried), so we should all be on SERO premium $50.

As unfair as the limitations placed on SERO customers may seem, I don't think we have much grounds for complaint given the totality of the stuation. We also get full discounts on phones so we're not being worked over terribly, if at all.
