One of my main reasons for having a WinMo-based phone is for ebook reading.
Many of my books are in .PDB format which is read by EReader or Palm Reader software... not to be confused with the Barnes & Noble EReader software, which reads EPub files.
I installed the EReader software on my HD2 and have two issues with it.
1. It pulls up the lists of books EXTREMELY slowly... I have almost 800 .PDB books and it takes over 5 minutes to display the book list. It has been slow since I switched from Pocket PC handhelds to WinMo phones... slow on my T-Mobile Wing, faster on my TP2, but it is fatally slow on the HD2.
2. I cannot enter the unlock code for secured book. This is my name and CC number... the 'OPEN' button grays-out when I enter the last digit of the CC number, so I can't finish!
Anyone else encountered this? Solutions or suggestions?
I suspect the slow listing of books is related to the Sense scrolling... anyway to disable that? I've searched a bit and haven't found that tweak... but I'd like to try it, I really don't like the HD2 sense scrolling anyway and would like to go back to the version on the TP2 which looks like it uses the stock WinMo scrolling.
I don't have a good direction on the unlock issue... maybe the Sense Touch Input? Anyway to disable that?
TIA!
Greg in Mississippi
P.S. I should add that I have a recent TMoUSA HD2 with the stock ROM with a few of the HTC customizations shut down (I really don't like them!) and have not applied the 2.13.531.1 update yet.
I think the issue with the eReader opening your library is that it has to open and close each book to get the real title and author info for the display. A few things can help, move them from SD card to memory (there's tons of real memory, unlike prior PDAs), move ones you've read to a different directory or delete them (you can always re-download them from ereader.com), or get a faster SD card (Class 10?).

Marc,
Thanks for you reply.
I hear what you're saying, but why do both my Wing & TP2 open the very same list of books on the very same Micro SD card in under a minute while the HD2 takes over 5 minutes?
That's what has me suspecting something with the Sense interface upgrades on the HD2... and what has me suspecting that I won"t get much improvement from a card upgrade.
Any other thoughts?
Again, thanks!

Unlocking Issue
I had a similar problem that the Done button at the bottom was disabled (grayed out). I finally figured out that I had not entered the correct number of digits (16 for most credit cards). Double check the credit card number you are using. I just unlocked a book I had copied to my HD2 last night. I entered the correct number of digits for the card used, but I did not tab out or move from the number field. The Done button was enabled. I tapped it and the book opened. Of course, you can have the correct number of digits and not have the correct card number, but that is another issue. Because I had used different cards over time, I keep a printed list from my eReader.com account to show what cards were used for each book.
As to the slowness issue, I would consider removing most of the books. I am sure you have copies on your PC that you can download as you need them. Keep just the ones you refer to often or want to read in the near future. I have another program that loaded slowly. I removed all but the books I used regualrly and the program opened much faster.

Thinking of getting one of these, any one here have experience of these two apps and any recommendations ?
Thanks.
Hello,
Actually I have pretty much experience with CodeWallet, eWallet and FlexWallet. I've been using eWallet for many years and recently switched to CodeWallet. There is a serious security issue with eWallet. It appears the Category names are in plain text unencrypted format !! Altought the actual cards are encrypted, I wouldn't be so happy for a thief to be able to see what I am hiding inside (i.e. Bank Accounts etc..) Sometimes the category name itself is something you would want to protect. That's why I switched over to CodeWallet even though CodeWallet provides only 128 bit encrptiong while eWallet provides 256 bit, though again with no category encryption.
MOBILER
Thanks for pointing that out.
I agree with you , eWallet is now off my list.
The other option I am looking at is instead getting Sentry 2020 which creates an encrypted mount. Then just have my sensitive info in Excel spreadsheets on that mount encrypted. Perhaps the encrypted mount can be my external storage card.

http://www.geek.com/hwswrev/wince/sentry/index.htm
Any opinions on this ?
Gut feeling , CodeWallet seems best all rounder so far.
hey linuxgeek
from my own personal experience, I've used many encryption programs and found all to have flaws except for this one: CryptoStroage which I eventually purchased.
It's key benefits is unlimited size - most other programs have limits of a few Mbs. with this program I can mount a few houndred MB volume on my SD Card where I put all my scanned documents in and view them with acrobat reader.
Another key benefit it has a desktop version so you could use the same volume to mount on your desktop pc. very neat, instead of going to the ppc each time. It is the most fast I've tested and is super easy to use. It looks like another SD card storage.
I think I've tested Sentry 2020 and found it was inconvenient for me.. but i'm not sure.. I may have not tested the recent version so I don't know. but I see Sentry costs $50 and Cryptostorage costs $20.
Let me know if there's something else i can help you with.
Great tip thanks for that.
Cryptostorage looks fab , definately going to get it.
Do you think its worth getting CodeWallet also or shall I just get Cryptostorage and like metioned earlier keep all my info in excel/word files inside the safe ?
Thanks for all your input.
Looking at Cryptostorage website it doesn't mention it works with Windows Mobile 5 .
Are you or any one using on a Universal with WM5 ?

Hey,
Yes it works on my Universal just fine. I found it to be the most convenient program among the encryption programs.
I do suggest getting Codewallet as well. It is not convenient to mount a volume each time, then fire up excel if only to check for a password. I personally have all my passwords, maybe a hundred stored with Codewallet and I also enjoy the Desktop version, which is easier to use when working on the desktop PC. I use my wallet file on the Synced My Document folder and then the desktop version and the PDA version are synced with the latest wallet file each time.
Thanks for reply.
I am moving towards getting eWallet and using cryptic category names because of its 256bit encryption.
I am definately going to get Cryptostorage too now that u confirm it is fine under Universal.
Thanks for all your input mate.
Anyone used cryptocard? I've been thinking of changing from myCodes Lite to this. myCodes seems OK but is a little slow.
Anyone ever wondered, how comes that CodeWallet can sync your Desktop/Mobile wallet without any password entered?
I guess they encrypt the data by record and keep a timestamp unencrypted. But this way if you often use the same login name and have many similar forms (Username, Login, URL), an attacker could get the password somehow, I think, since there is always the same beginning of the records.
It's something like security vs. sync-without-password-prompt. Where as 128bit RC4 isn't "strong" encryption nowadays anyways. I'm a bit concerned about the *real* security of this app...
Cheers,
-mARKUS
CodeWallet insecure
CodeWallet now is a NO GO for me. Found some patched EXE-file of its Desktop-version, where you can enter *any* 3-digit password to open your file. This is not security, this is INsecurity par excellence.
Cheers,

Hi guys, I'm really glad i found this place, i just hope i can learn enough to help contirbute down the road as well! But for now....
so, i went to the wiki list of hacks and apps, and i decided to try downloading the phone pad program, just to try.
There's not much literature there to help you out, so i just downloaded it to my lappy, and unzipped.
THe setup file is an XML doc, and i don't know what i'm supposed to do with that to get it on my phone....
Thanks for lending a noob a hand!!

If the file was a CAB file then do not extract on PC just transfer the CAB file to the device and double tap it to run it.

Thank you, i got it on the phone and opened it....
now i just don't know where to get it or how to use it.
BTW, the program i was installing is the phone pad that is posted in the Wiki thread.
No info on it there...

Hi
This particular application installs an additional way for you to input text and numbers on large touchscreen keys (bigger than the ones on normal touchscreen keyboard)
So for example if you are texting somebody and you touch the little keyboard symbol at bottom of screen you will see a little arrow beside the keyboard symbol. (i.e. don't open the keyboard by tapping it - tap the arrow beside it) A list will pop up allowing you to select different ways to input your text, anything from handwriting to your newly installed Phone Pad!!
This option for the keyboard is now available for all programmes where you would use the on screen keyboard. Keys large enough to save you the bother of using stylus and just use fingers.
Any problems ask here or send PM/e-mail details below

THanks very much mike, i found it!
Still a little tricky to get used to...It's funny, with all that my new PPC can do, i am finding i miss some of the simplicity of my old flip phone for things like just calling and texting. Maybe ei need more getting used to it still
That phone pad is a little different than i'm use to for texting....its a little tricky figuring out how to just select the word you want...or for ex, if you hit 1 and you want an !, do you select it at the list at top or is there a button that scrolls through the choices? those buttons on the left are a little tight up against the side to hit cleanly it seems, although no real misses yet.

Being honest I agree WM devices aren't the easiest of phones and there is a bit of a compromise between getting all the other fancy stuff and the phone part of the device. You will get more used to it as you say. To be honest I'm never in so much of a rush to call someone that I don't have time to use the stylus on the full touchscreen keyboard. And just think there are all those thousands of freeware application downloads for WM5 out there - just waiting for you to try!! Mind you a lot of garbage as well.
One follow on thought just for info:
CAB files as you now know you install fromm the device
EXE files for WM5 you run on PC whilst connected via Active Sync and they'll install automatically.
If I have a choice I go for the CAB file as I store it on the SD card rather than cluttering up my PC. Also If I need to hard reset all my cabs will be sitting their waiting for a quick tap and their programmes are back on again. Although I do use Mobsync which is an addon for Active Sync that allows me to back up my SD card to my PC and anything I drop into the PC Backup gets put onto my PC card when I do a Sync.

Great tips mike....
You are right, i am excited to make the most of my new wonder with all the free (and not free!) ware out there. That is what i think it's probably all about, cause i feel like out of the box it leaves a lot left to be desired.
I need to get myself an sd card quickly for that! Only problem is, i'm sure i'll want/need a 2GB card. A 1GB card is like 20-30, a 2 gb is closer to $90!! i bought this in a large part for nav software and the map data should take up a lot of space on a card. I guess i could get a 1gb for now or even have two, but swapping will suck i'm sure. What do you have for yours?
I have just 1gb, but despite having maybe 20-30 apps loaded and a copy of their cab files, a few photos and usual odds and ends it's only one third full. (Mind you, I put on lots but end up removing almost as many so application numbers only grow slowly) WM apps are really quite small. But certainly nav software and and maps will take a considerable amount. Spotted a package the other day bundling a TyTn + Blue tooth GPS receiver and Tom Tom software all for a price £50UK less than I paid for the Device alone and no SDcard.
Makes yer sick dunnit!
PS In early days I loaded all apps onto device memory and a surprising number it took. BUT it began to seriously slow down device even with quite a bit of memory to spare. Now I load everything to Storage Card with the important exception of those things the device needs to start up. e.g. Phone skins and any programs that run on today screen. It is essential to load these things to device memory as folks have found the phone alarms may not ring or device will freeze when calls come in if something it needs to start is buried on SDcard. The main ring tone as well - although it will work from SD card may cause a ring delay if on SD card leaving as few as two rings for you to hear before voicemail comes on. Live and Learn!!
This forum contains a wealth of info - more than I will ever need. Getting to be too many multiple threads on same issue though which gets confusing as some appear to find no solution to a problem and yet another may have just the answer needed.
Mike
EDIT: By the way if you like paying for apps.!! I think Wisbar Advance and Wisbar Advance Desktop are great. BUT learning curve is quite steep and a bit of an on-going project but allows multiple desktops to hold all those today themes and gadgets that just won't fit on one today screen.
that's some good stuff to know, and it's nice of you to explain all that too me. really helps clear some things up so i'm not asking as many q's later or just generally in the dark.
i've heard of others speak of WA before. in your opinion, what are the biggest must have programs and also some of the best values out there? i'm willing to pay for a good program but I like a free one as much as the next guy!

Here's a link to just some of the apps. I have on mine:
Look for the post by TCO who did a great job of finding all the links to the applications.

Here's a few mostly freeware application sites. Lots of rubbish in these but some maybe worth it. For anything specific for example if I wanted Excel on my device I'd just do a google search on: excel wm5. Freeware sites are everywhere but have your popup blocker on, some are good others are terrible. A google search on freeware WM5 will throw up lots of these. Also there can be the odd Java application that's good so may be worth a try.
I'm no expert in your work areas so guess you'll need to track down the good work related ones yourself though your kind of work would seem ideally suited to the typical tracking and accounting sorts of application. Some sites are nicely categorized.

HI even though i'm new to the forums as in making a profile, im not new to this awesome site!
I'll start off by saying that, im very computer litterate, and that the Cingular HTC 8125 is the first smartphone ive ever bought, so please take alittle pity on me as im coming from one of the dumbest basic kyocera phone's, to a phone thats still in the top spots of all smartphones
1) I slid a sim-card that I bought off of ebay(t-mobile) into the sim slot of wizard, and pressed the power button. When coming on it almost goes to the start(today) screen, but skips right to this white screen asking for sim unlock code, and I thought that maybe the numbers on the sim cards CARD would unlock it but no sucess. So ofcourse i came here, seeing on the front page of a program called LOCKIWIZ?
-Could you explain how to do this, as in setting up then executeing, in the most simple as you can get it, not be rude, but me just having this phone for a day, i dont know what things like HKey/System/tools...whatever means yet

3) Could this ActiveSync program possible fix these problems, or other necessities?
4) Since I knew that I was getting this for christmas, I went, and got prepared to use this phone to its potential. So I went found lots of freeware apps.
Total Commander
Calculator98
Arithmetic
VBirthday
Taskmanager
The Core Pack Media Player
Pocket Encarta
Magic Button
MyMoney
XnView player-camera
Winrar
And 2 strategy games; Warring states, and crimson fields
- all of these apps/games, are already on a disk
Will all of these programs fit on a 1gb Mini SD Card?
Will the zip program, I saw in the phones menu help compress?
Which of these programs do you recommend I keep, and/or get rid of?
If any what the better equivalents of some of these programs?
BTW, what's the most simplistic way as to getting these program on to the phone through activesync or will their be instructions/tutorials to guide you?
5) Are we charger for Wi-FI Internet?
In case needed:
ROM: 2.25.11.1 WWE
OS 5.1.195
Sorry for the really long list of questions, but im sure that this thread will many others. And if theirs any of those 4-5 star "Stickys" that I missed sorry, cause I saw that their were about 250 pages!
Thank You!

Youve really helped, and thanks for posting!
Im already getting more experienced with my My WIZARD!
like today I amazingly unlocked it! so it could work with my t-mobile SIM, and i've only had it for 2 days
Now I plan to try and upgrade my phone to WM6!, eventhough i dont see anything wrong with WM5?
But my memory card still wont "install" itself, eventhough I bought a USB Sync cable today, and uploaded a few apps?
Well thanks again

Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a good document reader and editor out there yet for the G1?
I got the phone first thing pre-ordered and when I first got it I was impressed by the unit itself but, not so much by what was available on the marketplace. I check frequently on my phone for new apps and occasionally online on other websites for apps but, haven't come up with what I need. Which is a document editor something that can read and write word and excell docs. as well as read pdf's.
I would also like to have push Hotmail. For some reason my phone will only download 25 message before obtaining a connection error whit hotmail.
Anyways, I figure most users of the G1 came from a WM device before and would be experiencing similar problems. So, I thought maybe some one could point me in the right direction on these two issues.
Thanks.

For the document editor there is a reader that isn't on the marketplace(don't remember where it was, sorry) but it doesn't work with the actual device yet, just the SDK version .9. I think for a lot of the real big apps(document reader/writer, 3D games, media streamer for your computer, real time turn by turn directions, etc) you're gonna have to wait at least a couple months, since it's gonna take a while for devs to make and fully test them.
Hotmail
You wont be able to have hotmail pushed down to your android mate MS wouldnt allow it so we will just have to put up with pull !!
Hi,
Now that Gartner is listing e-book readers as one of the hottest trends on the market, with Sony and Amazon positioned to lead the way, does anyone have any strong reccomendations for WM6-based readers?
Given a good-sized VGA screen the TP2 "should" be a good device for this, one would think. Personally I was a big "fan" of MS Reader back when I had iPAQs and Universal, but development of Reader seems to have completely died out in 2004 (I have great difficulty reading any of all my "activation required" books since WM5.0). So is there anything much better that anyone can reccomend?
Thanks/McHan

I always swore by Haalireader as it seemed quicker and smoother than Mobireader, until I got the TP2, that is. Mobi seems a lot nicer than Halli, which has not been updated for years.
Having said that, Mobi will not start from the last book accessed anymore when loaded through Manilla, although I tried Pointui at the weekend and mobi would open the last book when launched through Poinui. I suppose its just a quirk!
Many thanks for the suggestions, will give both these a try...

Nope it's because the short cut reference from the manila programs tab also contains a parameter that causes MobiPocket to get upset.
You can edit the registry and remove the extra parameter and MobiPocket will happily open the last book

Yep, threw me for a while too ... I thought it was a bug in the ROM i was using until one day I rearranged by shortcuts and Mobi on a lower line i.e. not one of the read-only ones. Lo and behold Mobi suddenly started remembering the last book/pos. It gave me a clue where to look.
