well good luck waiting for froyo
htc again just made a vague pr release stating H2 2010, which could be as late as 31 december 2010 -- given they don't delay it numerous times the same way they did with Hero
personally i'm just waiting for the Google NexusTwo (whenever that may be released) since Google (and in a way Motorola as well) makes sure u get the updates on time
* heck the only way i would reconsider an htc phone is if htc releases froyo on the hero before september

shame on you
Don't let the door hit your arse on the way out.
Heh, I just ditched my Hero as well, went for a Nexus One instead. Why? Given the relatively small size of the team that codes the HTC ROMs, the sheer tonage of handset models HTC produce in a year and the prolific rate of development for Android (which is a new thing for phones and outpaces the lifetime of a handset significantly), its pretty obvious that anything other than the Nexus One (currently) will be left behind within 6 months of release, doubly so given Sense. Plus, the Hero was the culmination of the Android Gen 1 phone cycle, and is underpowered compared to the Gen 2 phones IMHO. The only option is custom ROMs which, in all fairness to the hard work put in by the creators, can be hit and miss depending on what you personally expect from a device. The 2.1 Hero I played with was nice, but for me, it was too buggy for a phone I need to be working 100% while the owner was fine with random FC's, reboots, sensor issues and general beta-ish behaviour every now and again.
So, if you want to be at the bleeding edge, and have offical support, consider the Nexus One. My GF will be perfectly happy with the stock 1.5 Hero for some time, while I wouldn't be. Anything else is just wishful thinking if you are honest about HTC's capabilities and they way they operate as a company. The N1 is worlds away from the Hero, and a far nicer device.
I have buy a Desire, too! But I went back to the Hero, because my Desire have dust under the screen, after only 5 days. It was really a good device, but Hero have no dust after one year. So check the desirethreads here. Many users have problem with dust!

Can any users/owners of the HTC desire give me a review of the phone, I want to replace my HTC Hero, is it worth it or should I await another phone?

Should have posted in the Desire forums.
Last time i was reading up there everyone was very happy. Only -'ve thing I remember a few people mentioning was a slight pink-ish glare on the screen,...some people hadn't even noticed it so I think its a minor.
don't buy htc devices, you will wait for updates until you are incontinent.

You should always wait for another phone, because what is just about to be released is going to be better than what is currently available!
Of course, if you follow that advice you'll never get another phone!
I've got a Desire now, and it truly is a step up from the Hero. Everything is just so much more fluid on the Desire, which makes it much more pleasurable to use. However, in terms of functionality it isn't a whole lot different to a Hero with a 2.1 ROM, and once Hero gets the final 2.1 ROM it will gain a whole new lease of life.
Regards,
Dave

Ha,... I bought my used Hero about 2 months ago with plans to get the Desire for my birthday by the end of May.
But obviously now with the EVO4G and the Incredible being seen, I have to wait for something with similar spec to hit the UK.
But to be honest, I think i'll still be happy with my Hero for a good 6 months or so yet.
Thanks for the negative feedback guys, now I have reasons not to buy it, sucks that I'm not getting a new phone though.
Thank You
Shahin
First day using my new Desire today...thought i would post my thoughts as i was very hesitant i would be impressed with it vs my awesome Hero!
Firstly the speed of the Desire is phenomenal! I mean the Hero isn't slow and, if anything, is getting faster with every new rom but this thing is like rapid in all aspects!
The screen is beautiful! Again the Hero is really good but the AMOLED on the Desire is far better than i anticipated!
Build quality wise the thing is solid - iPhone esq (never had an iPhone myself) Hero is put together fantastically well too but the Desire is another level!
But finally....i miss my Hero not sold it yet and i'm not sure how long it will take me to 'let go' lol...when i do R.I.P my Hero, best phone i ever had! And major kudos and thanks to all the devs for their ongoing work with making the Hero dev scene the best around (controversial i'm sure lol) hope to see some of you guys over in the Desire dev scene one day
Peace out!

Nah, am happy with it...not feeling the Evo 4G and the Desire with keyboard (forgive me i forget the name) is just a Desire with a keyboard?? Plus i get free upgrade in November so can go again
Wrong forum?
I have similar experience with my almost 2 weeks old Desire.
I'm glad to see that there is a huge community developing for the Hero, making it much faster and much more usable. But the speed of the Desire (and perhaps other Android phones with newer hardwares) is just way way way faster than the Hero can ever be, and the larger screen makes the touch screen keyboard much better.
Having said that, I do think the Desire look a bit dull on the design. I like the way the Hero and the Legend look... I wish they had made the Legend with a bigger screen and put the Snapdragon in it. But the speed of the Desire just make the phone much more usable and enjoyable to use, and it is really hard to go back to use my Hero.
why not the nexus one??

I've just been reading a review of the HTC Wildfire which is HTCs new budget android device... they seem to think its a lot better than the Tattoo. The specs though are very similar except it has a bit more RAM and a decent camera.

Anyway, I thought it was an interesting comparison and shows what the Tattoo can still do especially as the chipsets are the same. I hope with a Froyo release for the Tattoo it can show its potential!

Apart from being able to pinch zoom who cares? And with a 3.2 inch screen anyway I don't think its the going to be beating an iPhone for web browsing just because it has multi touch lol. My point is that the Tattoo can be brought up to the same level with a complete 2.1/2.2 update.
Maybe that "bit more RAM" is necessary to have 2.1 and sense working fine.
But i'm not sure

yes but in my opinion it won't arrive!
instead htc assured froyo for device from genuary 2010 excluding tattoo that exited on november/december 2009 -.-
i'm not talking about hardware that is almost the same but the support won't be the same for these devices...
do not forget wildfire start with a 2.1 upgradeable to 2.2
and the cost is almost the same for both devices...
Not from HTC it won't... but the development team here are almost there anyway so hopefully a fully working ROM will be here soon without the need for HTC!
And I think you're missing my point. Im just saying that the new device is basically the same as the Tattoo. Im not saying sombody should go out now and buy a Tattoo, that would be stupid lol.
HTC Wildfire is what the Tattoo should have been.
I'm not convinced in upgrading to the Wildfire just to replace my dying Tattoo.
People, I'm quite sure that HTC won't update Wildfire to 2.2. They will just leave it behind like they left behind the Tattoo! They clearly said that they will update most of the phones released in 2010...I don't know, but I sense that the wildfire users will be as disappointed as we were when they said that 2.1 isn't going to come for our tattoos...

I couldn't say that any better. 100% agree. I think there are basicly two type of needs/users.
One is what I call the "leisure" user (that could be myself on week ends) who wants a ample web browsing, full multimedia, multiple messaging (SMS's and chat), gaming, and so on. For these users, iPhone 3g/3gs/4, Nexus One, or alike any of both is the choice.
Another one is my so called "working" user (myself monday to friday), when your needs are mostly email (mostly exchange and push), quick browsing, mapping or navigation, shopping lists, to do lists, calendars, reminders, transportation routing or schedule querying, not too ambicious web browsing, some music/sudokuing is well appreciated. For this use, Tattoo-like->Wildfire is simply perfect: does it all, with no excess luggage (weight/size).
I don't know if I should say pitty or shame on HTC for releasing a device that in a very few months will be improved to the obsolecense point. We all know that in consumer technology you will never catch up with the very best, but HTC guys, we should be happy at least for one year. Is it to ask for too much? Did they invent the "decent camera" last week so it is just now that you could include it in your phones, or couldn't you do that on the Tattoo? And cant't you upgrade to 2.1 or 2.2? You HTC want to tell us that you can't do what some cooks on XDA have already done? I am certain that these guys are very well prepared, qualified and smart, no doubt on it, but what they do is some kind of hobby on their spare time, and they are charging not a cent!
Well, my hope like many others, is on these magnificent guys cooking new ROMs for all of us (hopefully we will have a 2.1 or 2.2 fully functional), and as some other dudes already have expressed, Tattoo might well be my last HTC device.
I think tattoo is lack of screen resolution and size of the screen other than it's good if you just work around with roms and install market patched hopefully soon we will have 2.2 or 2.1 fully working custom Roms with market patched and it will be really cool
But htc should do something about tattoo they can't just leave tattoo in blank
don't think on buying a wildfire. haven't you got enough with Tattoo? save some more money and buy a nexus one or an iphone, they are truly speedy and better quality

HTC Officially released Android froyo (2.2) update for wildfire in europe. Just check below link,
http://www.htc.com/europe/support.aspx?type=Others
Soon to india.. wait.
As the thread says - when do you think official Froyo will be released?
September 23, 2011
April 1 2012.
I reckon the last week of October, or November if they don't fix everything in time. ;/
Different regions, probably different dates.
A new important research showed that the Maya were not predicting an end of an era, but the official release for Froyo on Galaxy S.
I wont vote coz theres no "NEVER" option..
Glad I sold the phone now and won't be buying a Samsung one again. I read before I bought it that Samsung support was shocking for new firmwares, but people said it was their flagship phone so they would sort it out quickly. Alas, no they didn't so their old reputation still rings true!

Agreed. I seriously don't understand why Samsung cannot get their act together when it comes to the software on the phone which has sold many millions across the World.
With the lag, the GPS problems and the slow releases on updates there is no way I would recommend or buy another Samsung phone. They had one chance to change their reputation for the better and they blew it...or should I say "didn't care".

I have heard the same complaining before htc phones got their updates. Look how long since the first froyo rolled out ( excluding N1) till now and still not all updated. Evo and the Droid Inc. have been out waaaayyy longer than the GS's and the DInc just got hers.
I wouldn't sweat it. If having to wait a few weeks for an update is a deal breaker for you than Android is not for you, unless you you get a Nexus 1.
Seriously.... What is the point of this ?? Can't we just be patient and wait... Anyway, it will release on different dates for different regions....

Froyo was announced in May, and EVO's got the update in August, I think...only three months. March is not an unrealistic expectation, though I do wish Engadget would have cited their source for that info.

To round it all out, there's this crazy rumor -- and feel free to ridicule me for not having the link -- that an HTC employee confirmed that HTC wants Gingerbread on the Evo before Christmas, and Sprint wants to be first to market with the update. i would agree that sprint still views the Evo as their flag**** model and not only that but its had commercial success, anyone remember how hard it was to get those things in the first 90 days?? you better believe they were probably working with HTC to make sure its updated in a timely manner. also, it makes sense for it to get the first HTC update since it has the largest install base.

Interesting article.
It would make sense that Sprint would make an effort to update EVO's to 2.3 as soon as possible. As someone else already mentioned, this is definitely their flagship device. Though the Samsung Epic is also a 4G phone, it has not been marketed nearly as much as the EVO.
This is pure speculation on my part, but it would seem to be in their best short-term interests to continue to develop for the EVO, as it has hardware that is very capable, and 2.3 would only make the device that much more appealing. It may be cheaper to develop for existing, familiar (and not very old) hardware than to develop for new hardware. I could be wrong.
I can already hear the commercials: "the EVO, now faster than ever..."
Yeah, I hope they push out 2.3, even if it has old sense.
