SETCPU - Hero CDMA General

Hello
I have the Sprint Hero, am running the Aloysius ROM (last update that came out).. I have been using the SetCPU, but everytime i turn the screen off and then on again, all the values reset themselves to 245mhz max and min, down from the 528mhz/480mhz it was originally set to..
Why in the world does it keep doing this??? Its getting seriously irritating, and slows down the phone tremendously when trying to answer calls that come in while in sleep..

check your profiles. there is one for sleep/screen off. Probebly your problem. If not, then uninstall/reinstall.

I didnt check any of the boxes for the profiles.. is this the problem?

you aren't supposed to use setcpu with android 2.1

I don't think Aloysious has the overclocking kernel. You'd need it to manually adjust the frequency.

Ahhh Ic.. There in lies the problem...
Thanks.. I actually do prefer the Aloysius 1.0 over the 2.0 versions he has out.. It seemed to run much smoother, especially in screen transitions and just operated much smoother...
Will be going back to the 1.0 tonight...

Thats correct... FLIPZ does a great job of explaining in more detail about what setcpu does and how it works or (lack there of) in the Setcpu vs OverClock Widget section and he also explains that it may be the new sprint radio that could be the cause for slowing things down in >ANDROID DEVELOPMENT > 05/18/10 l FRESH TOAST v2.1 l BFS + OVER CLOCK.....im a noob to the site so cant post links

use the Overclock widget with 2.1

Over Clocking the Eris..anyone else seem to get stuck at 246mhz

Since I rooted my phone yesterday, I decided to try an overclocker. I was saddened to see that it never registered mine as overclocking. I am using the Over Clock Widget. My processor runns at 528 and no higher, even when I select 585 or 600. Not a huge deal after I saw what was happening.
When it runs at 528 it runs nice and smooth and after 60 seconds, even while using, it drops to 480. When my screen goes off and then I use my phone again the processor is at 246 and won't adjust back up unless I reset it in the Over Clock Widget.
My question is, do you think this is an error with the Over Clock Widget or a phone issue. The visual performance lag I get existed before the app install and even before I rooted it, because I ran the linpack for android and got 0.807 for my MFLOPS. Then I ran it when it was showing 528, I got a 2.294 MFLOPS. Has anyone else seen this behavior. I always thought it was memory issue with the phone and have always used a task killer to clear up memory and performance was better, but now that I see what seems to be going on with the processor, I don't think it was memory now. When I reset it to 528 this phone runs smooth but as soon as it clocks down, back to lag and slow response.
Is there another app that would be setting my processor down that I'm not aware of? My next step is to wipe and reset the phone and run the linpack test and see what happens. I wanted to get thoughts before i do this though. Sorry this is so long.

I read alot! This is my first time trying to overclock so before purchasing a more than likely better over clocking app, I want to know if anyone else has seen this using other over clockers. I have read many people over clockign the Eris getting speeds of around 700mhz, but mine won't hit over 528 as mentioned.
The Original Eris Overclocking:THREAD HERE Didn't mention any of this if you might have been refering to that thread.
Was that menat to be helpfull. I searched all across XDA and found not notable information on this. I read what I could but nothing that mentions what I have described above. If you have a link that has some information on this issue, please post. Looking for some feedback though still.
During your overclocking search on xda, did you happen to come across the setCPU thread? The app that you have to pay for on the market that is free there for xda uers? Search setCPU.
Also, most roms are already oc'd @ 710 without any app at all to control it.

he's more than obviously running the stock 2.1 rooted with an oc widget!
relax, flame off boys.
if you want to overclock there are several roms that are set to overclock by default(easiest method)
or you could flash a new kernel if you want to stay stock(not so easy for a new guy method)
and then there is always the i want to know whats going on write my own kernel method(much less easy then any other method listed)
if you want the stock feel only with all the root perks try plain jane. and as for posting a new thread like this feel free to PM me at any time before putting yourself out on a limb for the boys to jump on you im glad to help anyone avoid catching the heat/ informing ANYBODY
Yep thanks for the response guys. I am running stock. Just freaked me out when I saw that ahppening. Thought I might have had a screwed up phone. I will PM next time Sj. Thanks..still reading though. SetCPU did bring up more than just using overclocking which pointed more towards kernel rewrites and custom roms.

Do we still need SetCPU with shubCraft build??

Hi. I'm wondering, does the shubcraft/cyanogen build already have an equivalent to setCPU? Or we can still install it to improve performance.
I'm asking because I saw a post saying that their phone was throttling properly without setcpu and saw somewhere (i think) saying that there's a program being used by the cyanogen build....
any input is always appreciated.
thanks
Easy answer
Install setcpu and use it to monitor. It does seem to peak at 998.

thanks.... but i was more concerned if there's already an app running like setcpu (preinstalled) and if setcpu will conflict if there is such an app preinstalled (as from what i've read in some posts that there is although i'd rather confirm it with someone)

i had a problem with setcpu on the shu8i cyanogen build. the sampling time and the cpu threshold were to high and would cause major lag.

why a new thread? this is related to that build and the chef/users of that build can help you out there. this should be moved and merged with that thread.
quit wasting space people! i havent seen this amount of useless threads since Hero ROM's were first developed for the G1... and that was alot of useless threads.

Unfortunately i see screen freezing with setCPU also. Not as bad or as often, though. I dont use any of the cpu controllers.
what build are you using? i use shubcraft 1.4d with no problems

I've tried it with all of the current builds. shubCRAFT, for me, was no different regarding screen freezing. But one main reason I don't use a CPU controller is the smothness of scrolling between screens deteriorates after a bit. As soon as I remove the controllers, scrolling smooths out.
let it autodetect, disabled autoscreen rotation. this stopped 95% of my screen freezing problems.

CM6 Froyo with Overclock widget

Hi,
I have CM6 and Overclock widget on my Hero CDMA and all is great.
I know the Hero CPU is only 528mhz
I noticed that on my overclock ..
before CM6.. it only gave me up to 528.
Now i have options much higher...up to 768!!!
does it really run that fast? have they been able to speed up the CPU? if so.. is it save? and how fast is save for everyday use?
currently running at 691 ...
691 is as high as the kernel that is included in the current CM6 ROM will go.
What about with darch kernel #9
Sent from my HTC Hero with Froyo...
so is CM6 Froyo the only fully working sprint Hero Froyo?
There are just so many threads that it is hard to find what it takes to get a working android 2.2 on my hero.
Thanks

Flash one of Deca's uncapped kernels if you want to go higher. Darch capped the froyo kernel @ 691 so it would boot on all phones.

Each phone is different in how well they do when pushed hard. Some work fine above 691..some won't.The options are there for you to try and for those whose phones are stable at the higher clock frequencies .

so.. it can.. if I choose a higher setting... without any other changes?? Kernels?
what are the issues with trying higher settings that dont do well? can it brick my phone? or just heat up.. and it will shut down.

Yes..you will have to flash a different kernal,as silverxj already told you.The RC-1 is locked at 691. You asked why your oc widget had higher settings..not if you could oc it higher.
Don't think you can brick your phone..but might get stuck in a boot loop on start up..or get a bunch of FC's.
I haven't taken any temps of my case to see if mine is hotter or not.It doesn't feel any different to me.

well.. without loading any new kernels..
tried it... (i should have did a nandroid before I did)
been running 710mhz for a few days.. no issues.. but could not tell if it was any faster.
I have JIT running with overclock widget
downloaded a linpack test...
528 gave linpack 3.5
710 gave 4.8
tried 730mhz.. and the phone locked up..
I have tried rebooting.. but each time it boots up into 2.2.. and start all the widgets... once the overclock widget is hit.. it locks up. I tried to get to the widget to lower the clock before it sets.. but it will not take.
I put it in the fridge to cool the phone before trying again... but it did not help.
Finally did a nandroid backup!
then tried flash 2.2 aug 22 and it booted but with same issues.
my last hope.. is to do a full wipe and start fresh! again!!!!!
If you are oc'ed to 710, you must have flashed a kernel. Stock cm6 only goes to 691

How can i run my Phone STABLE at 1.26 GHZ using SetCPU or some other program?

So, I can only run my phone at a MAX 1.3 GHZ without it crashing..
How can I run it at 1.26 without it crashing?
I am running Kings Kernel #11CFS
with Virus Sense Rom RC3
Is there some setting I need to chang? or use a different kernel..
why would you want too ? i would imagine that would kill the battery and make the phone very warm ?
Not all CPU's are created equal. If yours is crashing a lot at that frequency, chances are that yours will almost never run stable.
you could try using conservative scaling but it still probably wont be stable. most evo's cannot handle it.
Heat is your enemy. I suggest you try my hardware mod to really crank up the freq.
Overclocking
I just rooted my phone and I downloaded setcpu and I want to overclock it, but the max that i get is 998. And was wondering how can i get it at 1.267GHz. Im new to the android. Can someone please help.
The stock kernel does not allow over clocking, you'll have to try out a kernel from the development section, I recommend the newest Kingz.
Hey... I think this thing makes phone calls too!

Download a kernel that supports OC.
I tinkered around with OC'ing a few months ago I could never get it over 10xx without crashing. I just learned to live without setcpu.
I agree with voodoo there's really no benefit, unless you like pulling the battery. I didn't notice any better performance or speed while overclocking.

Mine is running very stable at 1.26Ghz and great battery life. Running BakedSnack 1.8 along with kernel #6. I'm using Overclock Widget instead of SetCpu as SetCpu was causing lagging response on my EVO.
I dont need 1.26 GHZ
I just wanted to Know why my phone wasnt running stable at 1.26 even thoug it said it was capable of doing it..

I agree with most ppl in that this phone is wicked fast as it is and its just not worth the risk/reward
HTC EVO4G A.K.A. Usain Bolt
Linpack: 34-35 MFLOPS Avg
Quadrant: 1500+
Kernel: King's #6 BFS
FPS2D: 54-55 FPS
ROM: Fresh 3.3
PRI: 1.77
I totally agree that heat is the undesired side effect of the overclocking of the Evo. I had been running mine at 1.152MHz and the noticed a couple of different colored spots on the screen especially during boot up with the bright white splash screen. This was caused by the excess heat from the CPU. I had my screen replaced due to dust under the glass and it is perfect, so no more overclocking for me.
