same thing happened to me. however, i restarted the phone and the computer, and then adb would see the device again. i didn't get the # prompt, so i had to run ./rage... again. surprisingly, the second time it worked like a charm.
did you do kill-server?
had the same issue and can confirm the second time around worked no issues

I had a similar experience, however, part of it has to do with having the proper USB drivers and then to that same end, once it does it's first go round, there is a point where you truly have to wait for the phone to show back up in the taskbar before proceeding - otherwise, the next time you are attempting to do the "adb devices" it doesn't recognize that there's a phone there...it's all a matter of waiting for the USB driver to bring the phone back "into existence" from there, you are well on your way to the # prompt. (Trust me on this, I'm a total NOOB and just did this for the first time using the step-by-step method. I was scared as s**t with each command I typed but I was determined to go on...once I saw the #, I knew I was out of the woods..
Stuck big time!!
I'm stuck. I can't get PC Mode to show up with debugging icon (even though debugging icon shows up in all other modes) yet adb devices shows my device correctly, and I can adb shell to it fine and end up with unrooted on 2.2 froyo at the $ after I updated to OTA 2.2 from rooted 2.1
so I follow the guide to the T but as you can see this is my results and I have not yet been able to fix the issue.

chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin

I have no idea how to fix this issue, I've rooted before on the leaked 2.2 without any problems both via the long adb method and via the easyroot method before OTA was released.
I tried the one click method and it hangs in the .bat and tries to pkil the process but there is no process to kill since the chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin didn't work and thus it can't load ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
%!~#$%~ Any help to get past this would be greatly appreciated! I would already have downgraded to 2.1 if I knew it was safe, but I'm seeing it bricks droid X staying at M logo on the forums if tried and thus we need a new sbf for 2.2 to be leaked.
EDIT: I've also tried via the Charge Only mode with debugging on as recommended by some people on the forums for other people stuck... I still end up with the same results using that mode. :/
EDIT 2: Looked up my default.prop and saw this:
$ more default.prop

Have you tried rebooting your phone?
How about this, go check out the original 25 step process to root the Droid 2. Instead of pushing rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin, rename it to something else and then run the exploit. Of course after making changes to the commands else where.
My build.prop doesn't have either of those properties. That makes me wonder what you did that changed your build prop if you have no root.
You should have been upgrading from vanilla 2.1 to avoid problems.

ADB is an "external" command... i.e. its not native to windows. So you need to either be in, and stay in, the folder/directory where ADB.EXE resides to execute it, OR add that folder to the Windows PATH variable so windows knows where to find it to execute it.
and this was part of Brian's problem (in the OP) after talking with him via Gtalk.
if you want to add it to the path, then you need to do the following...
First you need to know the exact location of your ADB.EXE (for example: c:\android-sdk-windows\tools or c:\sdk\tools or ???)
he had Win7 but the steps are very similar in XP AFTER you know the folder/directory where ADB.EXE is. (tip, you can use Windows Search to find it, when found right click and select properties. On the general tab it will have the location).
Find where your ADB.EXE actually is. You need that for the following steps. Since I don't know where you unzipped to, lets say for the purpose of these steps, your ADB.EXE is located in C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
In windows, right click computer... select properties...
click advanced system settings (from along the left)
click the environment variables button
from system variables at the bottom.. scroll down and highlight path
click the edit button
use the right arrow key on your keyboard to get to the end of the line (it should unselect everything, and still keep the text there..)
on the end of that line...
type the following....
;c:\android-sdk-windows\tools
(yes, you need the semi!! and that line should be exactly where your ADB.EXE really is... remember I'm only using c:\android-sdk-windows\tools as my example!!!)
click OK
and ok
after doing that, when you are at a command prompt, no matter what folder/directory you are in, if you type ADB it should recognize it and run it.
Okay So ever since I have gotten my Epic a week ago I have felt like a total Noob. I came from an HTC HERO which I rooted manually. My wife has an HTC EVO which I rooted using UNREVOKED ONE CLICK (I know I cheated but she doesnt care). This Epic has me heading back to my roots lol. Either I am a total Noob and this is a simple fix and my dumb ass keeps overlooking it (which at this point I am hoping for) or my Epic is Effed and I need to send it back before my 30 days is up.
Basically my problem is that I cant Adb remount or Adb push to save my life. When I use Adb devices it lists my device so I know my phone is talking with my computer correctly. I first Odin'd to DK28 with the root and clockwork etc. Everything seemed fine except I like to swap stock fonts for custom fonts via Adb, simple things like that. Since I cant remount I figured something was either wrong with the Rom or the Root. So I just tried to load a custom ROM up and try my luck seeing as thats pretty simple. I loaded Epic Experience 2.0.06 and got it all set up as my Daily. Then I got busy and just used it for a few days continuing to tweak my Rom and get it all dialed in for daily use.
I wanted to try ViperRom and see what that was all about so I made a backup in Clockwork and loaded ViperROM with no problem. While ViperROM is pretty snappy its not really my taste so I figured I would wipe and restore my EE backup. No matter how many times I did the data wipe, cache, davlik etc my restore would boot up greeting me with force close after force close. So I ODIN'd back to stock 2.2 then used the one click root exploit to get root. it seems like it worked but still ADB problems continue to persist. I have tried everything I can possibly think or research via XDA but now I am out of ideas.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled ANDROID SDK 3 times 2 twice with "Accept-All" radio ticked and once with just the 2.1 and 2.2 goodies.
I have tried different cables none of which are stock. on every usb port on my computer all replicate the same issues: Adb devices shows up right but will not remount only run in shell. and when i run Adb shell it responds with $ first needing me to open su just to get the # symbol.
Any input is incredibly appreciated.

We have a different method than the Hero did. If you've already tried that, lemme know. Works fine for me on stock rooted, Nebula, and (now) Bonsai.
Also, if that doesn't work, try it from a terminal app on the phone. I use it there more than anything.

Hey man thanks for your input, I really appreciate it. That didnt work either, on ADB or on Terminal Emulator. It responds correctly from both sources with:
Code:
remount rw
Remounting /system </dev/st19> in read/write mode
I am wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that the 64bit drivers dont install totally. this module called the "Abstract Control Module" hangs forever and doesn't install. However I ran over to my wifes 32 bit vista laptop where the drivers will install totally with no success either.
Hrm... That's very strange. It's telling you that it is working. What is the error you get when trying to move stuff from there? So, after remount rw'ing, cp something into a system folder and post those results.
Your output for remount rw is correct, so let's see where that goes.

I just made a simple text file that was entitled "movetest.txt". I placed the file on the sdcard and used terminal emulator to push the files successfully to /system/etc

That last one appears to have worked. Check and see if movetest.txt is in /system/fonts. If so, then you're in business. Just copy stuff across as root instead of pushing.
Well now I can use ADB fully. I odined back to stock then used the one click clockwork 3.0.0.05 ext4 batch then flashed Truley Epic Rebirth 1.2 and was able to remount correctly, push and pull all the way down to the root dir. I am not sure what changed but it just all of the sudden started working.... I'll take that lol

Well my issue was a bit different. I could get it show up with the "devices" command. When I tried to "adb remount" it would deny me. It would reply with "device not found". Which is really wierd because I could ADB shell with root access any day of the week. I just had to change my process to accommodate the limitation.
I would just ADB push files to the sdcard, mount into shell to gain full root permissions then finish my work.
Kind of a strange round about way of going about it but I learned quite a bit more linux commands that way lol

Hey all,
I would like to know, what I might have done wrong in the rooting process. I used
This Tutorial hxxp://g2hacks.com/g2-hacks/how-to-root-g2-phone/
I made it to step #18 and was stopped by this error:
Code:
/data/local/tmp/root: data/local/tmp/busybox: not found
/data/local/tmp/root: data/local/tmp/busybox: not found
Unable to chmod /system/xbin/busybox: No such file or directory
/data/local/tmp/root: /system/xbin/busybox: not found
cp: not found
cp: not found
Ideas?
Thanks,
Danny
Here is a screenshot of what I pushed to the phone:
hxxp://i.imgur.com/No1id.jpg
You have a typo in your push command for busybox (you renamed it to root instead, which then got overwritten when you pushed root). Just push busybox again.
How do I back out and enter that push command again?
What would I type?
I'm a total novice.
On your comp, just type the command again:
Code:
adb push G2TempRoot/busybox /data/local/tmp/busybox
Then on your phone, in Terminal, just run the root command again:
Code:
/data/local/tmp/root
It should complete this time.
I made a mess. Check it:
hxxp://i.imgur.com/y3NRW.jpg
You are still in the adb shell (basically creates a terminal on your phone that you can interact with on your computer).
Type "exit" to leave the shell. This will return you to the regular command prompt (instead of the $). Then try the push command again.
So now the phone terminal gives me this:
Code:
/data/local/tmp/busybox: permission denied
Oh sorry, forgot you needed to set permissions on the file. Run this command again from your computer:
Code:
adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/*
Then it should all work fine.
The errors are getting shorter
Now I get this:
Code:
mkdir failed for /system/xbin, File exists
This error doesn't matter (it's really more of a warning in this case) and is actually expected.
You should actually be rooted if you didn't see anything else.
AND I'M ROOTED... THANK YOU!

Congrats! And there are a few threads about this that you can read through (just search for them). If you like HTC Sense (the interface HTC adds to a lot of their phones---basically lots nice visuals and extra polish to things), you can try Virtuous. If you like the stock look that the G2 comes with, there is a stock DEODEX rom out there. By de-odexing the rom, you can do things like customize the framework (e.g., customize the status bar icons/colors or add a battery percentage to it). Lots of people here (myself included), use CyanogenMod. It's close to stock but with lots of tweaks/extras (it's based on the Android Open Source Project or AOSP). It's also nice because it has frequent updates and constant development (they recently started pushing test builds that are based on Gingerbread---the new Android update only available on Nexus S).
Now that you are rooted though, it's easy enough to install Rom Manager and test them all out. Be sure to create a backup first as well.
ROM Manager installed. I'm backed up.
Thanks again for your help.
i cant flash the engineering hboot keep getting error md5sum : not found Verification of hboot-eng.img failed i re-download the files, re-extracted them to my SD card, and ran the flash_hboot script 3x still nothing plz help but im rooted and backed up
Did not want to create a new thread so I'm posting it here.
First off, I haven't tried rooting any of my phones previously so I'm obviously making a mistake somewhere.Hope someone here can help me out.
I installed visionary+ r14 but it just blacked out the screen with a heading.I've read elsewhere that it has all to do with the new firmware updates. My update for the DZ seems to be country a specific one and came out a couple of weeks back.
Anyway,
I tried this visionary method a few times but the phone just hung and I had to go to the homescreen and uninstall Visionary and reboot to get the phone to run smoothly again.
Then I read another way of rooting the thing and it took me here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_G2
After a couple of tries I was able to push the files to the DZ but got stuck at this command:
adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/*
The error it gives me is:
Unable to chmod /data/local/tmp/sqlite3: operation not permitted
Strange thing is, yesterday at the same point it gave me the same error but it was 'busybox' instead of sqlite3 and right before that it was something else.Which should mean that those earlier commands were run successfully by the terminal.
P.S. Debugging mode is on.Visionary is uninstalled. followed all the steps mentioned in the guide.
Okay.So I format the phone memory and I'm now able to move a few steps ahead.
But as soon as it seems that everything is going well, the terminal emulator refuses to open at this step:
"Launch Terminal Emulator, it Force Closes. Launch a second time, and you'll have a root shell "
waited a while and there is only a blank screen showing up.

It looks like you are trying to root a DZ with a firmeware version >= 1.72.
If yes to have to downgrade it to 1.34 first.
See either the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261 or the more comprehensive at http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting
But if your CID is other then the ones stated in the the first thread you need a goldcard to downgrade first, which is also described in the first thread.
have fun - Guhl
Thanks a lot for your reply and as is the case, my phones CID is HTC_38 which does not seem to be downgradable without a gold card.
I read the procedure and although its well explained, it will take a bit of time.
Will try it sometime soon hopefully, although I wish someone would just make a simple rooting app for the newer versions!
It took us month without sleep to create the existing rooting tools. So I do not see any simple rooting tools on the horizon
I am having a bit of difficulty rooting my g2. I am not sure if its related to my os or not but i can not get it to work.
I have followed this and tried it all kinds of different ways.
addictivetips.com/mobile/what-is-adb-and-how-to-install-it-android/[/url]
I can get to my run command after doing all of that and it shows my serial number after typing adb devices but after that i can't enter any info in the sdk run command promt.
I have not been able to gain temp root yet because it won't let me enter the commands. I went to try to re-install java/sdk manager yet again and now it says java is not in the right path.
Any help?
If you're having troubles with ADB, why use it? You don't need ADB anymore to root the G2. It can all be done by placing the files on the SD card and running Terminal Emulator on the phone. You can run any of the prompts from ADB in the phone instead. I rooted my first G2 this way. It took some getting used to coming from a phone with a 1-click root, but it wasn't hard.
Check the Wiki, pretty sure it outlines this method as well.

Yep let me grab a link for you (theres actually a video tutorial I wanna try and find). But basically instead of using ADB to push the files to the correct location, you just have to manually put the files in the right locations on the SDcard, which is where ADB pushes them anyways.
K so I followed this method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU9zn_BEth4
The files he refers to are in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965
Now different people have had different issues with this. I personally had some issues where it tells you to run #sync, because my perm root wouldn't stick properly after reboot. If this doesn't work properly, I'm sure someone can help you with your drivers to get ADB working.
I should also say that you don't necessarily have to do this method with the initial temp root via visionary, you can simply do the one outlined in the Wiki for rooting (aka http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228 ), but just place the files manually and run the commands in terminal emulator.
If you got the adb devices command to work you are actually in good shape. You are supposed to enter all of the commands from what you are calling the "run command" prompt anyway (the one you used for adb devices).

Unfortunately this won't work (if you don't want to use ADB, Visionary must be used to get temp root). ADB is needed in order to push the files directly to the phone. If you try copying the files to the SD card first, you won't have the correct permissions to copy the files to the phone in Terminal. You are also not allowed to execute programs directly from the SD card (mounted as noexec), so you can't try to obtain temp root from there. If you want to use the gfree method of rooting without using ADB, I made a guide using Visionary for the temp root here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160.
But the OP actually has ADB working, so he should be able to use any of the guides.
This is the error i get now if i try to enter anything in the sdk manager run prompt box. Is there some place else i should be entering the commands?

You are supposed to be using the regular command prompt (I think you referred to it as the "run command prompt" earlier). It is the prompt in which you successfully ran the "adb devices" command. That is the only prompt you need to use.
Do i enter commands 1 at a time or all at once?

First off, Yes you enter each line as you see it.
Second just to make sure you are in the right area to enter these commands, to get to command prompt you can either search for it from the start menu or hold the "windows button + R".
That opens your run command from there type in "cmd" and that opens command prompt.
Next make sure your current directory is the one you installed adb into. To get to that you can type "cd C:/...... whatever folder you installed it to."
To make sure my adb is working I usually type "adb devices" and see if my phone shows up.
Good luck
Glad to see someone else from the good ole 901 around here =)

Okay does anyone have a better guide to rooting?
I got all the way to pushing all the files on the sd card and running the terminal emulator where it shows forked children, reboots the terminal emulator and then i can not enter /data/local/gfree -f
sync
It wont find that file

try pushing the file to that folder again
Re-Tried everything at least 3 times, including pushing the files that didn't go.
I give up Ive spent so much time on this only to have it fail at the most unlikely times.
Will wait for another method to root come available
You could try downloading and installing Droid Explorer. It installs adb and fastboot files in its install folder.
Are you sure you actually pushed all of the needed files to your phone correctly (i.e., no errors appeared when doing so)? Which guide are you following and what were the specific errors you are getting? Once you have temp root, running gfree and obtaining permanent root only takes a few more minutes...
Also, did you try any other guides (like the one I linked to earlier)? If you are waiting for a new method of rooting, you might be waiting for a while (since the existing methods work, I don't know how actively people are working on new methods).

You are supposed to do that command from your computer. (The instructions state "On the computer, open terminal and type the following commands".) Here, terminal means the command prompt that you've been running all of you other ADB commands from.
If you wanted to run the command from terminal on your phone, you would just type "chmod 777 /data/local/gfree".
You don't need ADB for G2s.

Can someone link me a better guide for my G2 so that i can try this 1 more time ?
Maybe a link to the top choices for versions of android to run once i get it rooted?
Ok. I had the android sdk installed before and was able to easily "adb shell" "su"
but a few months ago my phone stopped being recognized by the pc (stock cable) so i uninstalled it since i couldnt use adb nor odin (i thought it was my phone though)
but now i got a BB cable and the drivers all installed wonderfully and there was no headaches so now i believe the hype with getting a new usb cable because the stock one sucks.
So i followed the "Setting up Android SDK for beginners" by bthomas and i ollowed it to a t because i couldnt remember how to set up the sdk, and after setting it up, when i type in adb shell, it gives me a "~#" (which never happened before) and then when i type "su" it gives me a "sh-3.2#"
Im not sure what couldve went wrong except for the fact that before i would install everything (1.5sdk, 1.6, etc.etc) because i didnt know any better, but the guide showed me that all we needed to get adb to wrok was the platform tools one, but its not working.
I need advice because i dont wanna mess up anything in my phone since ive never seen those prompts
TL;DR
ADB gives me a "~#" when i adb shell, and i dont know why
Also, im running urban regeneration with genocide 2.0
The '~' means you are in your home directory. The '#' means you already have root so the 'su' command is not necessary. Sounds like your rom has a non-stock shell installed and is kernel rooted?

but i cd to the sdk directory (Cd:/ android/sdk/platform-tools) so idk why it would think im still in the home directory (that would be cd: users/etc, right?)
and yes the kerna is rooted. its Genocide v2.0 and im undervolted.
im also ext4 if that makes a difference...as for the rom idk its Urban Regeneration
im such a noob now i never had problems before i was forced to stop using my phone with my pc

After you 'adb shell' it's showing you the filesystem on the phone, not your computer. I assume the the cd platform-tools command you are mentioning is what you are doing in a Windows command prompt to get to where your adb.exe is located.
Edit: Do this, it's safe, 'pwd' shows your current directory (in Linux/Android)
adb shell
pwd
cd /
pwd
Chances are it will show your home directory and then /

adb shell
~# pwd
pwd
~ # cd /
cd /
~ # pwd
pwd
/
and then i exited lol
could it be a problem with my computer? like the place i saved it or something?

I don't think you have a problem it's just different than what you remember. Probably because of a difference in your mod. The prompt itself can be modified with environment variables (it's the PS# variables, you can look with 'set') so I wouldn't worry about that. My pwd output on stock looked very similar to what you pasted.
My PS# variables on stock:
# set
set
.
.
.
PS1='# '
PS2='> '
PS4='+ '

i typed that in and i got a whole list of things and under them PS1='\w \$ '
PS2='> '
PS4='+ '
PWD=' '
TMPDIR= '/data/local/tmp
how would i get it back to #? Im willing to go back to stock odin if i have to, but im getting more intrigued by this as you help...

Ok so you can see how your PS1 environment variable is different than mine. Depending on the shell you are using it might support escape characters such as \w which should display the current directory and \$ which should show # if you are root or $ if not. Here's some non-Android specific info on the subject http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-linux-unix-bash-shell-setup-prompt.html (stop at the colors part, no clue about which if any character are supported in the stock android shell, just using to give the basic idea)
To temporarily change the command prompt you could do:
PS1="# "
But most likely your shell has a settings file that sets the default prompt when you login. Unfortunately I do not know where this is located. Going back to stock would certainly undo any custom shells or settings your current rom has set if you don't like it.
i think that directory might be sbin/sh. because it calls to it whenever i enter something like ADB REBOOT it says sbin/sh.: adb not found
but when i type in adb shell
and then reboot recovery, etc it works
i dont think i need to go to stock, i just need to not type certain things before commands i guess...
but thanks alot! youve enlightened me quite a bit hahah i wish i had more thanks to give
