Can anyone of you test the following:
When you are calling with someone, and your calling volume is on the maximum (so the volume of the speaker that you hold against your ear). Can anyone notice a little crack from the speaker when the other person talks a bit loud or make's a loud noise? I'm wondering if there is something wrong with mine. With several tones the ear speaker cracks a little bit, like the sound is to loud or something.
Is it defective ?
I had this problem with the HD2, so I am not really surprised to hear that N1 also has it (I don't have N1). If you ask me, HTC bought crappy parts from its suppliers for the last generation of phones (HD2, N1) ...
Check these from the HD2 forums:

wow...
So i guess i can return my phone then ?
i`ve also the same problem. on maxed out volume there is distortion. one step beyond max volume the distortion disappears. i`ve noticed it at first when i was calling someone on landline. hopefully there will be a software fix, but i`m afraid it`s poor speaker quality.

Yeah i think its poor speaker quality to . I'm not sure if i should return my phone tho.
It is only really noticable on max volume, and even then only on hard noises or hard voices. Thanks for your reply.
could some more poeple please test this? i'm wondering if many phones have this problem. Thanks!
anyone ?

could anyone help me with this please
I'm not sure whether you could define it as 'defective' or not, but I think all Nexus 1 phones have this issue.
I could be argued that it's just not up to the job of course and you could maybe return it on that basis if you want, but I don't think this is a specific issue with your device.
Bad speaker vs good speaker
I have the same crappy speaker build on my N1.. a friend also bought a N1 and his is crystal clear, so its not STANDARD that you get the junk one.
my guess is they have speakers from one supplier that built from several parts suppliers, or several suppliers of the speakers itself.
HTC is China company.. I love the place, but they're know for quantity, not quality.
Mine is being swapped for a DOA exchange.. let's hope this one is better.
Cheers
I got mine yesterday, everything works fine except its microphone's quality. The other people hear me like I talk from distance away.
Is this common problem or just mine?
Thank you
This is something that I experienced initially when I got my Atrix, I resolved it by moving the phone up closer to my mouth. I tend to let the phone hang from my ear where I hold it near the top and it put's some distance between me and the mic. I'm a former iPhone user and was lazy with where the phone sat on the side of my head, once I made this change though people have said I sound clearer than when I was on my iPhone.
I can't talk closer, the speaker is exactly on my ear. It looks the microphone has very bad sensitivity. Too bad all Motorola cellphones i had in the past they had excellent quality.

I have same problem, I turned off noise cancellation and got some improvement. I'm pretty sure it is a software issue. I also put a clear bra type case on it from some 3m stuff I have, I didn't cut out for the mic on the back. I'm hoping this too helps but have not tried yet.
Has anyone had any luck increasing the microphone volume? people can't hear me when video chatting or calling using GrooVeIP

Not been able to increase the microphone volume yet. However, I have learned from this thread that the mic is located on the front, top, middle of the A500. If you look very closely you will see a tiny rectangle hole in the groove between the glass and the case.
I know it's not much help at this point, but perhaps if you were to put more emphasis specifically on directing your voice to that spot on the tablet (not that you are not facing your tablet already...) you hopefully may have better results.
I see. I hope a fix for this is coming soon. I have been reading up about this and apparently if we can disable or modify the noise cancelling mic, it would help this situation, but I have not the slightest idea how to go about doing this

Hey guys, I was just wondering: where exactly is the speaker sound supposed to come from on the Nexus 10? I know the speakers are right and left front facing, what I mean is are you supposed to hear sound from the entire speaker on each side? Mine only puts out sound on each speaker towards the top (volume rocker/power button side). I guess I was under the impression that no matter how you held the device and which part of the speaker your thumbs covered you'd still be able to hear the full speaker sound. Anybody know or care? Hope it's not a dumb question.

The grills are mostly aesthetic, the speakers themselves are on the top

The sound should be coming from the upper half up of the speakers cause they made it this way you don't block the speaker while holding the tablet.
On the Essential website is says that the phone has four microphones: "4x microphones with noise cancellation and beam forming."
I'm wondering how this affects call quality for noise cancellation (and if all four microphones are in fact used in calls--or is it just used for detecting voice commands). Has anyone tested how well the phone cancels out background noise? In other words, when you are in a noisy place, how much of the noise does your caller on the other end of the line hear?
In-call noise cancellation is an area with phones that has really languished and in fact mostly gone backwards, technologically. I still haven't seen a phone with better noise cancellation than my Nexus One (that used the amazing Audience chip, which no one uses anymore--because Qualcomm includes a noise cancellation function in their chipsets now, which is not as good, but, well, comes with the chipset at no extra cost.)
Secondarily, how is audio recording quality in videos?
Thanks for any feedback.
I would also love an answer to this. Reviews almost never mention how clear or understandable you are to people you call anymore.

Have not had one complaint coming from a S7 and G6 the essential is fantastic.
O wanna know where the 4 mics are! We've obviously got one on the bottom by the SIM, and one by the camera.
Where are the other 2? Perhaps one in each speaker grill (earpiece and large speaker)?
