The G1 is the most unfriendly device for contacts.! With that being said, i rooted my phone a few weeks ago and have been having a great time...no problems to speak of.
Just found one. So I had this problem with my contacts where I installed Kigoo (client machine), and Touchdown (Exchange Client (Phone Side)) and I got triple entries of every contact. BLAH...
So today I deleted all of my contacts from my Gmail contacts and I then go into Contacts -> Menu -> Edit Sync Groups and uncheck "Sync all contacts". Now everytime I chose ok I'm getting the error message "The process android.process.acore has stopped..." What the heck?
N E 1 got N E ideas?
Sounds more like you mucked things up with third party apps.
i would agree with that but i mucked it up before upgrading to 1.5... when the G1 first debut i was looking for a good way to use my phone for work. and getting my contacts into Gmail seemlessly with a program seemed like a better idea than csv files, looking for automation. but then the endevour of finding an Exchange app screwed it all up - so yeah i guess your right in part. is this a bug in 1.5 cupcake and is it universal or is it specific to the JF 1.5? the reason i ask these questions is due to my jailbreaking my phone and loosing all Tmo support - whats a guy supposed to do?

Well so long as your contacts are backed up somewhere (pc, exchange server, etc) I'd try wiping then pulling in your contacts again.

Nice blanket statement that probably doesn't matter for 90% of G1 users who only use Google Contacts. Maybe next time consider adding in some qualifiers or caveats?

Apoligies. Didn't mean offense to any of the 90% of G1 users. Life, I have found, does't live in one app. My statment should be read with an air of frustration. The force close is an error that occurs everytime I try that process and needed to find a work around. Otherwise this post should act as a notificaton to all other G1 users that they also may expirence this error.
Side note -> I found my work around.
Hi,
I exetensively searched XDA and google for a solution to this, but while finding solutions to problems which are close to my problem, I couldn't find quite what I'm looking for, so be aware at first this might seem like a question that has already been asked, but please keep reading since this is really something different.
I have the following problem with my Desire Z which I have for 2 days now:
In my Gmail account (which is in fact a hosted apps account), I have like probably most of you a "All Contacts" group and a "My Contacts" group.
I use the My Contacts group for all my contacts which I maintain with correct information like name, last name, phone, etc. The "All Contacts" group is auto-updated by Gmail and contains each and every contact that I have ever sent or received an email from/to.
The difference is that my "All Contacts" contains 497 records, while my "My Contacts" group only contains 127 record, suffice it to say I don't want the "All Contacts" group anywhere near/on my phone.
Off course I've found out by now that using the menu button in the 'People' app and going to 'View' brings up a window where I can nicely select which groups I want to see and which ones I don't.
The problem, however, is that this setting only affects what is being shown, and even when turning off "(Ungrouped Contacts)", while effectively hiding these contacts, they are still in the phone, and worst of all : still synced to my Bluetooth carkit.
This causes huge problems with my carkit, probably because either there are weird characters in one or more of the records, or because there are just too many of them.
This is off course not just a wild guess, but a conclusion I have drawn after performing some tests:
I tested this with 2 carkits : My own Dodge Ram 2009 MyGig system, and my dad's Audi S5 Audi MMI (Multimedia Interface) system.
Tests were performed with 4 phones:
- Tmobile G1/HTC Dream running CM6.1 (stock android contacts.apk)
- Moto Milestone running CM6.1 (stock android contacts.apk)
- Samsung Galaxy S I9000 running stock ROM (TouchWiz contacts.apk)
- HTC Desire Z running stock ROM (HTC Sense contacts.apk)
For all 4 phones I connected them to the 2 carkits and enabled logcat while doing this. The logcat log effectively showed me that the CM6.1 phones were only syncing the 'right' contacts, while the 2 other phones (both using non-stock contacts.apk) were sending all the other **** to the carkit as well.
These tests lead me to conclude that apparently it's very hard to make a decent custom contacts.apk, because 2 independant manufacturers both screwed it up at the same point.
From where I stand I can see 3 possible solutions/workarounds to get this working correctly on my Dezire Z:
- Replace contacts.apk with stock one
- Flash CM6.1 on there
- Clean up 'all contacts' group in gmail account.
Normally I wouldn't hesitate to just fire up CM6.1 on there, but I really like the HTC sense web controll thingy, so I want to stick with the stock ROM for a while, or until Cyanogen comes with a ROM that includes this. (not yet AFAIK)
Cleaning up 497 contacts is really something I want to keep as a last resort.
So the only remaining option is to put a stock contacts.apk on there.
Can this be done, and if so, how?
Or are there possibly other ways around this which I'm failing to see?
I think this thread will soon get moved to the General forum, since it's not ROM development
I've got a very similar problem with the one you describe above. I found a load of garbage being sync'd via Bluetooth to my car stereo too. As well as my regular contacts, there were a massive load of blank ones (which I've now discovered were hiding in my "Other Contacts" section in Gmail, and got sync'd to my phone, and hence sync'd also to my car stereo).
I also found it sync'd all my Facebook contacts via Bluetooth, which isn't what I wanted at all. I ended up deleting all those manually on the car
Thanks for the reply Stevewevie, good to know I'm not the only one with this problem.
Some car kits seem to be able to cope with this better than others.
For example my dad's Audi MMI will not work at all with my Desire Z, while my Dodge's MyGig will connect, but sometimes break up during a call, not syncing contacts, and other weird stuff.
What I was going to look into was a solution that might work for you too, i.e. a way to send via Bluetooth a group of contacts. I can't yet find any way to do this in the stock ROM though, and I haven't searched to see if there are other Android utilities that could do this.
I've got around my problem for now, but if I lose the address book in my car stereo I'll be faced with the same problem again. Or if I need to do a big update.

The Dodge MyGig syncs everytime my phone connects, and sometimes it seems to workout while other times it doesn't work.
So for me it's a gamble everytime I start my car.

Ouch !
I've set recurring calendar entries (Birthdays, etc) in my Calendar. Now with the new year, they are not showing up in this years calendar.... but if I go back to the original date and edit the entry, it definitely shows as a recurring event.
Consequently, I'm missing out on notifications of upcoming events, as they have not recurred over to the new year correctly.
How can I force the calendar entries to re-appear correctly, without having to manually re-enter all the entries again (which defeats the purpose of having a "recurring" setting)
I'm using the Stock 1.44 WWE ROM with Cookies v1 Home Tab to show multiple calendar entries on the homescreen. No other tweaks or registry changes have been made.
Just for future reference, You have no need to tag your topics with date/year, That is for posting ROM/Build releases not general questions/discussion.
Do you get same issue on different roms or just this one?
Thanx Atheist.... I thought was doing the right thing after reading the "Mandatory" thread !!!
Only ever used the official Roms so far... not sure I'm ready to take the step into cooked Roms, until at least the original 12mth warranty is up.
I've found the thread here regarding setting up Google synch, which i've just done. Seems to have solved all the issues I was having
Would be cool though, if you could multi-select appointments (like birthdays, for example) and change settings on them as a global thing (eg, if I want to set up a generic SMS reminder 1 Day and 1 Week prior to the event... it's TEDIOUS to open up every birthday entry to set them)

Ahh yes you are correct, my bad. tbh its a silly thing to ask espesially since newbies/n00bs have trouble posting in correct section or reading stickies etc. (btw, not calling you a n00b, just speaking in general).

Installing cooked roms (espesially wm) is very easy and you can also revert back to stock rom/spl etc and your warrenty is intact.
Only thing you need to worry about is flashing incorrect radio as that can brick your device, plenty of info and guides to read though, you should definatley have a good read, you can really bring your phone to life with cooked roms.

Well I havent used WM6.5 regulary for nearly a year now so cant really help on this.
Have a really good read though and try some roms, its really easy.
And once you are confident you should 100% get Android on there
Cheers Mate,
Took the plunge last nite and installed my first cooked Rom... Energy/NRG. F**k me it's pretty !!!!!
Still going thru learning how it all works and setting it all up to my specs. Having a few little issues with Active Synch for the calendar with the google/Gmail calendar I set up yesterday.
As described above, I managed to get the calendar synched up yesterday, with the stock Rom... but I am getting an "Invalid Security Certificate on Server" error on the NRG Rom, after following the same process of setting up the synch to google/gmail.
I know this isn't the right place probably to ask for help on THAT particular issue... but since it relates to my original question here, can anyone help on this please?
Error code is 0x80072F06
I've (FINALLY - TOOK FOREVER) managed to synch everything else with MS MyPhone... just need to synch the calendar with my google/gmail calendar.... but Active Synch (when phone is NOT connected physically by USB)... I can press the "Synch" button and A/S attempts to synch, then returns the above error.
If the phone is docked by USB and I attempt to synch, A/S just sits there and does nothing.
Pressing the "Menu" button reveals ONLY the "Status" option available to select.... all of the other options are greyed out and un-selectable.
I've just worked out what I did wrong..... instead of putting the Server as m.google.com, i accidentally put it as m.gmail.com ....... resulting in the certificate error message
OOPS !!!
Recurring Dates
Check HTC Support Downloads, you will see an update that fixes this very issue.
You will also see a 3.14 ROM, Oct2010 I think, that includes the update and some others in it.
Can someone let me know what/where t-mobile's contact sync .apk can be found in a rom (like ice), or maybe post it if it is handy? Loaded up evil's z rom the other day, went into contacts and unchecked sim card contacts from view and only 4 contacts showed up, one of them being myself. Haven't ever gotten around to loading contacts into google yet, this is an obvious reason to do so...would just like to get my contacts back on my phone. Tried to search in the market for it, but the only one I found apparently only works for 1 type of phone. Thanks in advance

I am not sure that will even work as it may rely on Sense and most rom don't have Sense framework only those that has Sense supported so if you even pull the .apk it may not work. But I see you don't trust google I use to be like that and at this point honestly I don't care if they want you they will find you so make your life easy and import it to Google. Now I know TMobile does not have export if you logon line and access it so what you need to do is have rom like stock rom or IG which has it and export it to CSV file and then import it to Google contact under Android.
Yeah, been meaning to clean up my contacts and import it all just hate getting caught with my pants down...so are you talking about the my sense framework or just sense in general? Do you think this is worth posting under evils rom since he ported it and would know the ins and outs and to see what he thinks or do I just need to bite the bullet? Thanks again...
why didnt you just do a contact sync with your gmail? thats what i always do. and it loads on every rom i link my gmail to super quick.

I did have it set up but believe that it only pulls contacts to your phone and doesn't push new ones back-correct me of I am wrong-just wouldn't be syncing my contacts to 2 different places if they both did the same thing...and haven't fully set up contacts in google yet other than emails...it is definitely the way to go...
So after a lot of searching on-line, bt syncing with my old phone, etc., etc.,...finally came upon this
http://yincrash.livejournal.com/188605.html
and it worked as far as Name, Home Mobile Phone, Home Phone, Home Email, Work Mobile Phone, Work Phone...just saved as a csv file and imported to my gmail...am now official thanks for the help
I've been using Ubuntu One Mobile as a back up plan. It has a small monthly fee though.
Hey guys
first off, I know all the BS posts i'm going to get so let me head them off right now:
- i'm working and living in exactly the same locations
- i've had Android 2.3.3 on my HD2 and this issue has not occured
- i've used Windows Phone 7 and this issue has not occured
- both my Exchange server configs has NOT changed at all
- i'm working and living in exactly the same locations
OK so, something I personaly have experienced is really poor Exchange sync with this phone. I have contacts sitting on my laptop (Outlook), PC at home (Outlook) and on OWA on my server which are just not coming down to the phone, no matter how many times I reboot. Thing is, and this makes this hard to solve, its only a few of them - in fact, VERY few of them.
I've also noticed Emails are sometimes very slow to appear on the phone from either of my two hosted accounts even though they are both set to push on peak and off peak schedules.
Baseband - I9100XXKDH
Kernal - [email protected]#2
Build - GINGERBREAD.XWKDD
I am new to this Android malarky so it could be something i'm doing (?) or there might be a newer firmware out there by now but, with the strange naming convention I don't really know.
Not sure if anyone else has seen this? Any clues? Any newer firmware?
Thanks in advance!!
Just to summarize
- You can sync alot of the contacts from the server to your phone, but not all.
- Those you can sync, are those consistently working fine (ie if you make any changes to them server-side, are those changes always synced to the phone)?
- The few contacts that cannot be synced, can you see any differences between them and the ones that do sync (the info added to them, certain symbols used, or similar)?
If you edit one of the contacts not synced, and remove all the info from them except for the name "a" and possibly the phone number 012345, does this in any way change the sync behavior?
- If you add a new contact, and give it exactly the same info as one of the unsyncable contacts, does that sync aswell, or does it also not sync to the phone?
- Probably not the case, and I'm not sure about behaviors across several different phone all running 2.3.3, but are your contacts all in the same folder on the server, or have you sorted them into different folders?
- Try adding your Gmail account, or a gmail account, to your phone as a new exchange account, and see if the same unsyncable outlook contacts, if you could possibly export them from your outlook and import them into your Gmail account, also fail when synced from the Google servers.
- try downloading either NitroDesk touchdown or RoadSync from the market, and try adding the same account to either of those and see if the behavior changes. Atleast that will show if the problem is general with the server, or if it seems to be only the stock/samsung exchange client causing this in some way.
Not sure at all what is going on, but some of the above might give some results that are useful.

Sorry, JUST before your post came it I discovered a tick box that corrected everything! Some how I had turned off Sync'ing but yet that still enabled mail!? I honestly couldn't remember how I got there or where it was, sorry
Although that doesn't explain why mail is unreliable....
Thank you for your detailed steps though! I hope they come in useful for someone
I'd imagine the Samsung e-mail app is just an overlay on the native Android client. All my Android phones have worked great with Exchange. If Samsung completely re-wrote the e-mail client and it doesn't work I'll be distraught. I rely on Exchange heavily and think TD sucks because it flattens the databases.
To be fair to it, it does work now ... maybe the tick box I discovered will encourage mail to be a little more prompt
For me it was Unuseable if I could not reliably sync contacts and schedule... which looks like I now can.
...and Tasks, which is an unexpected bonus for me!
I've been impressed with the speed with which the phone handles data, even on non-3G networks. No problems with Exchange either.
All good so far, in fact.
Worth adding a [SOLVED] to the title of the thread?

I know, I'm thrilled. I read somewhere that Samsung really sweated the details on the Exchange app. In addition to tasks, it's supposed to be able to use the company directory and do a calender busy search. There's also Citrix integration and a lot of VPN feautres they've added to the phone. I'm guessing, especially in the U.S., that high-volume corporate accounts are going to be a big audience for the phone which is why Samsung included so many upgraded connectivity features.
