Internet browser test - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Themes and Apps

I have done some testing on browsers for my Tilt2 and decided to post the results. All tests were done on www.mobilespeedtest.com while on the Edge network, live in the country. All browsers had cookies deleted and phone was placed stationary while I used a stylus. Browsers tested are Opera, IE, Opera10 and Skyfire (installed on device). I ran several tests and the following are the results;
Opera (not 10) - 1st run=741/kbps, 2nd run=727/kbps at 77% resources used
IE - 1st run=386/kbps, 2nd run=388 at 81%
S.F. - 1st run=1455/kbps, 2nd run=1013 at 89%
Op10 - 1st run=68/kbps, 2nd run=72 at 82% (not sure why its so bad)
SkyFire def uses more memory but the speed is worth it IMHO. Does anybody know of a better browser?
Forgot, I am running the E2 5.2.21901 ROM and stock radio.

I don't think you're in the right forum for this, it doesn't seem to be about ROM development. But I'm not clear at all what you're testing here. I find it hard to believe that the browser itself makes such an apparently huge difference in raw performance like this.

I like the idea of this, but I think some variables need to be addressed before the numbers can be useful.
First, I personally don't have faith in the consistency and reliability of the numbers that come from mobilespeedtest.com. I would rather see test results from somewhere like dslreports.com/mspeed, or any others that may exist (I haven't found any for wm).
Next, are you using turbo mode in opera? Using that, and including skyfire in the test results, skew the numbers because the downlinks are routed through their servers before getting to each of those browsers. So confirm that you're using opera with turbo mode turned off, and ignore skyfire's numbers, to be sure we're making an apples-to-apples comparison here.

That's why I decided to post it, wanted input. I am no pro, was just messin around and found the numbers to be interesting. I have been using SkyFire for a bit and it does seem faster than the others. There are some sites SF can't load (not sure why) and it uses allot of memory, but I tried a couple other sites and the #'s were pretty close to what I posted for I.E. and Opera. Maybe somebody that knows what they're doing can run some test and tell us.
Thanks
Oh not sure about Opera turbo, I'll check.

Using dslreports.com/mspeed I can never get a reading using opera mini 5 as it claims my speed was too fast, and I need to try a "larger file"... even while using the largest file possible (1mb)
Opera Mobile 10 works, but only gives me like 500ish kb/s w/ hsdpa enabled... mini is so much faster, but apparently I can't really get an "accurate" reading... mobilespeedtest.com does work however, and yields strong results... (2mb/s)

Pretty cool tabs!No annoying expiring-promption any more. And faster.but you still need some hack to opera.ini to move the cache files to your card.
:? Just wonder why opera still insistes on allocating the cache in the rom.
Check website:http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobileppc/

sweet! lokking goode m8!
I just really like to know how to reduce the top address bar to QVGA :? and set the Display a lower % (example 90% or 75%) as default.
Been waiting for this. I may even purchase it at the expiry date!!! From first impressions and usage, this is the best 3rd party browser yet... I just wish there were more options like the ability to 'save as' a picture, like you can in PIE. Or background loading of tabs (as in firefox) and options for where to store downloaded files and cache.. i.e. I want to store them all on the storage card..
SORT IT OUT PLEASE.. Lets not make a opera out of it!!!
Hi
I'm trying to use Opera without a GPRS connection, ie using the usb cable connected to my pc. The problem is that it fails to connect.
Does anyone have any idea's?
Thanks in advance

Mine seems to be working when connected through Activesync. Great program so far. So much faster to load than Netfront and more full featured than PIE.
MiniMo will be better (it already works with Google Maps) but there's still a lot to be done. Opera follows suit with Explorer by taking columns of data and presenting them in a single column. For sites like this one, that means a LOT of scrolling up & down. You can choose not to fit to the screen, but then you have a lot of left/right scrolling too.
We really just need some 800x600 Universal-style devices with accelerated 2D chips...
I tried this on my wizard but it seems that the font on the address bar is not properly displayed. It looks like some weird language when i write on the address bar. Anybody experience this?
I'm experiencing the strange text as well, reminds me of the old "Dingbats" system font, just a bunch of symbols. Maybe we can find our common factor here, I'm running the new AKU2 rom without the ext rom installed (I tried mucking with it, which deleted it, and then did a hard reset).
EDIT: Mysteriously switched to a usable font, unfortunately I have no idea why
it so much better then then IE its not even funny
Yes i am using the new Aku2 Imate Rom without extended rom. How could you make yours working.
I'd like to try it but don;t want a full Vario. What is the ini hack to put cache on sd? Is there maybe a thread discussing Opera an tweaks somewherer?

VNC options for trinity (have searched)

hi all
Recently got an M700 and am loving it. Since discovering this place I've been amazed at what customisations you can do, and with flashing to WM6 using AX3L's fantastic ROM, getting TomTom6 working, and a few choice other apps to allow FTP etc., i've now got a device that does pretty much everything I could ask of it anywhere! (Probably matter of time till I brick it though...).
What I am missing though, is a decent VNC client (although I've used the RDP client semi-successfully).
I've searched for 'VNC' but no joy - surely that can't be the case when there's so much other stuff available? or is the search function not liking the term...?
thanks for a great forum & resource
Did you see the posts re zoomVNC on PocketPC Thoughts? Looks nice!

i have now
thanks - looks excellent
i guess there's others out there i couldn't search for too!
For me the best is PTPocketOffice.
It was recommended by Menneisyys:
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1572&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
It consumes a lot less data than the others VNC.
It's fast.
It has fullscreen.
It can be used one handed.
The server side can resample the pictures to make it smaller (less data and better image than if it was done by client side).
The only minor thing I'd like to see improved is their proprietary softkeyboard. why not using the system keyboard? I don't want to use a new keyboard with each of my apps...
that's a great article
i hadn't thought to even try logmein until reading it there, i'd assumed that with their remote screens always being slightly fuzzy and smaller it mightn't be great - wow, was i wrong!
just tried logging onto a client's SBS server and the screen scaling and rotation together make it nearly as useable as a standard desktop! the screen scrolling at the side of the screen is a great interface! there'll be occasions where i need VNC, but for know i think I've got a favoured solution

rss program?

Hi there. I saw in this forum many good programmers. Can any of you make a RSS program with embeded photos like newspanel???
RSS Hub is my choice of reader, and will probably always be. Even supports podcasts, and auto updates.
The New Viigo beta, for SURE! Has TONS of features, at least give it a look:
http://viigo.com/beta
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=398571
I like BeyondPod. It works well for me.
pRSSReader. does its job simply and perfect
I know there are a ton of free ones but I've always gone bake to SPB Insight because it actually downloads the whole article and not just a link. Does anyone know of a free one which also has this feature? Basically in the morning before I set off to work I connect to my wireless network and update all my channels, there is no 3G available in my area, nor where I work, no wifi at work either, which is why I like to have whole pages downloaded. I have HTC RSS hub built into my rom but it only gives me brief headlines wanting to connect to the internet to view the whole article. Seems like a waste of time to me.

pRSSreader does that too AFAIK
Try Egress.

I really like the Egress 4.0.0 interface however it has horrible memory leaks (Once I uninstalled Egress the memory leaks stopped). I have yet to try 3.3.0.
I really like pRSSreader which you can find at the below URL. The new 1.4.x release really improved the UI. However, there are a few small bugs that the author David Andrš is really working hard to fix.

all this programms are good but not any can show pictures in today screen like new spanel.

of course it is like every big browser. we've got a free internetbrowser and they our internet behavior^^
no jk.. maybe^^
its a very good one i prefer it to opera.
technically it's not freeware, it's a "concept version" It will expire at some point..
One day I hope theyll release the proper thing so that those of us who bought the last one can get an upgrade with everything working..
Over gprs in "simple mode" browsing things like this forum is perfect, strips out all the uneeded stuff and makes it very fast.
Not sure if anyone can help. I've been using the NetFront 3.5 Concept browser for a while but I have an issue with it.
For some reason when I am typing text into a webpage using it, be it into google or any other page, the text I am typing doesn't display until I move off the text entry box (tab, or press the right cursor key).
I've been living with it for the last few releases but would really like to get it sorted. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but that didn't help.
Typing in usernames / google searches / facebook replies blind is fairly tricky. If I am writing anything other than a few words I tend to drop to notes or Word and then copy and paste.
Apologies if this is the wrong section to post in, but I thought it was somewhere to start.
I'm using a TyTn II branded as an XDA Stella.
Thanks
IAn

Did anyone try Wikango?

is an application that warns you for fixed and mobile traffic control spots and radars. It's already used widely in France and Spain. The good thing is that it is cross platform. However, I didn't find any cab for windows mobile yet. I would certainly like to try if it works, before spending e25 on it. Strange thing by the way is, that for Android it costs e10 in the android store.
wikango.com
Currently it looks like Wikango can't be downloaded. If you select the mobile list and select a phone, you will get redirected to the "buy" page instead while it can't be bought at this time. Funny thing.
you're right. They claim though to have thousands of users already!
Since you need a critical mass of users to have accurate information on radar locations, I'm very charmed by the idea of a cross platform solution like this, especially because of the ever increasing amount of smart phones.
Btw, a friend of mine bought it in the android store for e10, and it works great, I've seen it on his HTC Hero. Strangely it's free for iphone in the appstore.
Trapster
Why not try Trapster. It should work on WM
Thanks, that looks like a great tip! I'll be checking that out, see how good it is in my region.
Wikango on Android is a bit of a rip off, as they charge about 10€ for it when the iPhone version is free.
Since they released the first version, there has been no update.
Wikango runs fine on HTC G1 or Hero, but does not work on Droid and Nexus One, although there is no such info on Wikango's web site.
Finally, the devs are not answering to emails.
I have used it a lot on my G1 and, price set appart, I have been quite pleased even if, as I mentionned, there has been no updates and bugs are left uncorrected.
Since I switched to the NExus One, I'm simply unable to use it anymore :-(
Waze
Waze is well worth taking a look at too.
Great! I'll check out Waze too!
I've tried Trapster for some time, and it's not stable enough at the moment on my Topaz. When a phonecall or any other program pops at the front, the Trapster application loses its Google Maps connection, causing you to drive in a blue screen instead of on a map. It's not mature yet on WM and the devs don't respond to my message.
Trapster
Yes, I tried Trapster on my Topaz but found I could not get any display most of the time. Waze seems much better, and copes with occasional loss of data connection (important when your route home is through the countryside!)
Yeah, Waze is stable on my device. And it's fun paving roads!!
