Is my gps faulty - Nexus One General

Hi,
I've been using my nexus one for the last couple of weeks using google navigation.
I find on a journey (out in open space) that about about 5/6 times every 30 mins I get a large blue circle around the navigation arrow and an occasional gps signal lost message.
I've used by Blackstone/Touch HD in exactly the same areas before and never had this problem.
I also had a desire for a couple of weeks and never saw this occur.
Has anyone else had a problem like this?
Thanks

I don't know if you rooted or not, but after I installed CM 5.06 I have to put my phone in airplane mode then turn on GPS wait for a lock then turn airplane mode off, to get a lock.

Hi, thanks for the reply, no I've not rooted it. Don't have any problems like that, it's just it seems to keep loosing the lock every now and again before regaining it, not great when you are somewhere you don't know and it just stops for 30 seconds.
I guess nobody else has seen this?

Anybody else getting this. Don't want the hassle of returning it to HTC for fixing if other people have the issue.

I've had that happen driving down the highway. Seems to drop out for about 30 seconds or so. I always figures it was switching between satellites or something (I know little about GPS so this may be way wrong). It has happened when using maps and co-pilot.

I see the blue circle pop up every once in a while but I've never seen it lose the signal.
The blue circle just indicates that it doesn't have the optimal GPS signal to get a precise lock... but it's pretty close. I'm not sure why it does this though... once a GPS lock is acquired it shouldn't drop it just driving around on streets.

ive had this on my g1 as well... but it comes right back... its usually after u pass under a bridge or passover or something...

Yes, I've always had that with things like bridges on previous gps devices or sometimes in urban jungles (ie lots of tall buildings), but not 5/6 times in a 1/2 an hour journey in open space.

this might sound silly, but if you have juice defender installed, disable it before you go on the maps app, when i have juice defender enabled, i cant use my gsp

No, I've got nothing like that installed, but thanks for the suggestion. I've had locale or tasker running some of the time, I know they use GPS, but that shouldn't cause loss of the lock.

Screen dims, but never shuts off

I just noticed this morning that when I hit the power button the screen only dims now. I swear it used to shut off the display completely before today, and I know for certain that is how it worked on 1.6. This really is annoying, because now when I put it in my pocket the 3 buttons are constantly being depresses and they vibrate, which lights the display again. That coupled with this stupid lock screen that I have to try to open 3-4 times is really making me angry. Maybe it's just me thugh.....
I'm assuming you upgraded to 2.1?
I remember reading somewhere that someone had a similar issue after upgrading to 2.1 but then they re flashed 2.1 a different way and problem went away.
Same issue here, it really eats up my battery life, and I do end up pushing those soft keys all-too often... I am on 2.1 and that is definitely when the problem started, I'm going to try reflashing to see if I can eliminate the issue.
try the steps found here on streaksmart.com. She reports that she has no issues when its done that way. I don't have my streak yet but will follow these steps when i get it.
I had a similar problem before, only the screen would go off and on again and stay on!
Turns out it was an APP that done this.
It is possible an app is causing the problem.

I've been experimenting with what's been causing this on mine, and I noticed that sometimes wifi will not shut all the way off. It hangs at "Turning off..."
So I tried not letting it sleep with wifi on, I turn it on if I need it, then turn it off (really a big pain in the butt) but went two days with no "no sleep" problems.
Today I tried leaving wifi on all the time, not two hours later it happened.
Since it's not happening to everybody, I wonder if it has something to do with our wifi setups. Maybe the router brand, or the encryption type, or something?
Last night I powered off the phone before better. I have wifi on all the time and I never shut it off. Today though, I have had no issues with the sleep function. It's still mid afternoon so we'll see if it continues this way. If so I will explore the wifi solution as well.
I was having this problem and somehow this setting was wrong:
SETTINGS>>APPLICATIONS>>DEVELOPMENT>>STAY AWAKE
mine was checked and we all know what that mean. Check yours to be sure if your not up for flashing again. Just a thought in case you overlooked this...

Yes, it means the screen will not time out and go off when it's being charged, but you can still turn it off, and mine wasn't plugged in when I couldn't turn it off.
I don't think this is related to what I've been seeing, but thanks.
It seems that Bluetooth did it today. I was fine all day going black on sleep with power button, but once I switched on wireless to connect to my car stereo it never went off again. Even if I turn off the wireless I have to shut down and reboot.

Same here. Started car and it showed zero signal strength for the phone on the dashboard display. Pressed the power button on the Dell Streak and the car display then displayed the signal strength. From then on, the screen would dim but not shut off.

Yes, and I couldn't turn it off once the "screen dim bug" took hold. Today I've rebooted and left Bluetooth OFF and Wireless ON and have not had an issue all day long, and that's making calls, using 3G, wireless and running a pile of apps. I think I can live with no Bluetooth until the next release.

I don't think it's BT. I think it's wifi not recovering properly from sleep mode.

Fair call. However, I've now had BT off for 6 hours and I'm using 3G, wireless and USB transfers and it hasn't hiccuped yet. This is the longest I've had with no screen dim bug.
I did notice that when I walked out to the car, the Streak could still "see" my home wireless network, then starting the car and the BT pairing and connecting is when the screen dim bug came back.
Maybe it's when both are run at the same time and both are connected/paired?

I agree its looks like its a wifi issue. I always keep my bluetooth off and it still did it.
I got mine fixed... but the problem is i did a bunch of steps and now cant figure out which one actually fixed it. its been running great for 12hrs now.
What I did, since I noticed that wifi sometimes didn't sleep or wake itself up properly all the time (which i think is what's affecting our Streak sleeping), was turn off the wifi sleep. In other words when my device shuts off wifi stays active.
However, I then used "Tasker" from the Market and setup two profiles. When the screen goes off it shuts off 3G, wifi and autosync. Then when the screen comes on it turns on 3g/wifi, waits 20 secs and enables autosync (which then initiates a mail/calendar/contacts sync).
This has worked perfectly, and I get mad good battery life to boot. Now this means I don't get mail/updates (facebook, weather, etc - still get calls and txts obviously) but for me it's not a big deal especially for the battery life.
I may eventually setup more Tasker events to duplicate "Juice Defender" and poll every half hour (3G only, when screen is off only) to get my updates, but for now it's been working great.
I also setup profiles so if I'm not where I have wifi pairings it shuts down wifi. Also if it detects I'm connected via wifi (at home for instance) it disables my lock screen. I also have it set to only start GPS for apps that need it (Maps, Navigation, Places, etc) and that helps save battery too.
Tasker is an awesome app for $3.99. It has a steep learning curve, but there are enough walk-throughs available to teach you how to do the basics.

Found the fix on Modaco. Have a look at the last page of the thread called "2.1 Bugs ....., Add what you find please....."
I never knew there was an "Advanced" menu for WiFi!
yeah that is not it. I also have mine set to never time out so does that mean it will never shut off either? Anyway, it keeps happening through the day. Wifi and bluetooth do seem to have something to do with it, but I need them both on all the time so the only thing I can do is reboot. Then it is good for a couple hours. Are the any apps that have a reboot? That's one thing I miss on the iPhone.

DII8 - back to GPS issues.

Anyone having major GPS issues? Seems like it was worse than before. Took forever to get a lock while I was driving, had to stop and turn off GPS/back out of Google Nav, go back in. It got a signal for about 10s then lost it.. with full bars. Anyone else having this problem?
Mine still doesn't work at all. -_-
No problems here ... I usually have it off but whenever I need it, I've always gotten a lock immediately and flawless navigation using Google Maps. Absolutely destroys battery though
Took me 15 min to get a lock on a clear day outside on a fresh reboot and still was off on my location. My touch pro 2 never had this problem.. I could use it inside a building full of metal and still get a lock.. I love the Epic but I would not use the gps in its current state of function for navigation purposes..

No the opposite is true, the problem people are reporting, including those above, are on warm starts where, on occasion, old expired ephemris data is in cache and causes problem getting a lock in otherwise good conditions.
This is much tested and there is a good workaround. By setting the Epic to cold start you overcome this problem, it is stickied as the workaround on the large epic forums elsewhere:
Enter GPS debug/settings application by typing *#1472365#
click "Setup" tab
click "position mode"
Click "starting mode
Enable "Cold Start"
Back out.

mine shows me and my wife in texas half the time and we live in florida, never did it before this update. seems to be picking it up from the wifi I use in my house, as thats ATT and they are SBC and i believe they are in texas, but i never rehooked her phone up to wifi and lattitude shows her in texas at different times and the thing shows me in texas as well, its like cell triangulation doesn't work worth a damn.

^ Same for me. Never an issue and even locks indoors. Yes it eats batteries for lunch though.

The GPS is worthless and can not be relied on. Yes, on occasion it does work and on that rare occasion, it seems to work well. However, on the five occasions that I have NEEDED it, it has failed me completely, NEVER locking on my location. These occasions have been outside with clear sky. When I use GPSStatus, it shows 9 sats but 0 lock. I just don't understand how it can see 9 sats and not lock at all. I have a >10 year old POS handheld GPS that with no network, no maps, no anything locks every time within one minute. Samsung must have actually had to try to f--- this up.
Yes I have applied the cold start "fix" and it has made no difference, sometimes the GPS works and most of the time (especially when I NEED it) it does not.
Using the cold start method posted by aero1, my GPS.... sometimes works. Sitting in my car on a clear day with full signal, the GPS can take up to 5 minutes to get a lock. If I'm moving, It will sometimes lock onto me but still say "searching for GPS" so it won't give me driving directions... even though it can see where I am.
In cases when it does work, it lags a LOT. Sometimes it won't update my position for a minute... which is useless if I have a turn coming up that I don't know about. It is always jumping to where I am every few seconds. Google nav on the EVO was perfectly smooth. It stuck with me around turns and never lagged. Always perfectly accurate. It is the only thing I miss from the EVO.
I've completely given up on the GPS and use my Garmin (/wrists) whenever I need something reliable

Same results I'm having now. Using the workaround (cold start) it's hit or miss whether I get a lock or not regardless of how many sats my phone sees.
I put it to "cold boot" and am still getting shaky results. I used it to find my way back to my apartment but it kept putting me on the road NEXT TO the highway and jumping back and forth. Did this again when I was returning from work during lunch just to see if it happened again. Yep, gonna have to lug around my Garmin from now on.
Just sad.
Try this, weird but is working for me.
I installed an app from the market called GPS test to test my GPS signal strength.
Whenever I launch GPS test and then run google navigation it locks on within 10 seconds. If I don't launch GPS test after a cold boot then it takes forever to lock on.
So far this has been working for me for a couple of days. Might be a fluke though.

I've got three epics which allow me to do extensive controlled testing.
before applying the cold start fix my results were as follows on all three when in perfect sat condensations:
a) about 75% of the time no problem with locks
b) about 20% of the time I was getting many sats seen and none locked (expired ephemeris);
b) 5% or less I was getting few sats seen where they should be seen (bad almanac)
I applied cold start method to one Epic and for several days never experienced a failure to lock. I applied cold start to second Epic and now both Epics with cold start applied have gone over two weeks without a single failure to lock. I am now testing some other methods of flushing out cache
Top me this points to main problem being cache which for me ahs disappeared with cold start -- although there are other GPS problems on epic)
Other issues -- not addressed by cold start fix -- are inherent low SNR, SNR thresholds, samsung hacking the difference between fine and coarse results (30 meter hardcoded), these can all cause problems with GPS.
That said there is absolutely a repair of the main cache problem with cold start, I now see my 3g light up every single time I invoke GPS, with non net based applications, reflecting an objective and factual assistance data download --and without cold start I often would see no data usage on invoking GPS meaning failure to pull assistance data.

Why does my GPS STILL not work?

Loving the phone and the community here, but I'm starting to get frustrated with this thing. Before DL09, I could never get a lock. After updating to it (manually, before it was an ota), my gps worked for the first time ever. However after switching to DL30 and subsequently EB01, I can no longer achieve a lock. I thought this fix was already taken care of? How come the newer radios aren't working on my phone?
I'm currently using the EB01 radio on Superclean 2.4
You turned on all of the GPS settings (Google, verizon, standalone) and cannot get a lock?
Im getting a lock on EB01 way faster than DL09.
I'm on super clean 2.2 and I have no issues with GPS. Have you considered that your phone's GPS may be faulty? I'd exchange it.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I leave the GPS on all the time. In most buildings it keeps the lock. I really hope that leaving it on makes it easier to live with.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
In my foray into EB01, GPS was flawless... for a day. After that I couldn't get a lock to save my life, rebooting clearing stats etc.
The difference was four friends came in from out of town with GSM android phones. We all were having issues. It is like they were kryptonite.
Of course it is ridiculous to think that one GPS would mess up another since they are passive devices. I would advise taking this as weak entertainment or with a grain of salt. DL09 is back yup normal, usually 10 seconds sometimes two minutes for a lock.
In my opinion, getting stable froyo on these units won't be so easy, and I hope we get a few timely releases until they get it right. If EB01 does go OTA, I am screaming bloody murder the moment my clock goes out of synch.
Swyped w/ XDA App. When in doubt, mumble.
try turning on your wifi network (even if your not on a wifi network) this gives you a pretty good position.

For positioning, I just use the cell towers. That's fine. Its for turn-by-turn directions where I really want the GPS lock.
After 48 hours or so of uptime my GPS is definitely not as quick to fix as it was under DL09. I'm sitting in my favorite armchair looking at a fix with three satellites whereas I used to get a fix with 7 or 8 and an accuracy of 8 feet. After a reboot my fix time drops to about 15 seconds and I get a lock on 8 satellites.
these have been my experiences with Super Clean 2.x (voodoo and nonvoodoo):
- sometimes turning the GPS off from notification window and back on again will do the trick
- sometimes when the above doesn't work, turning it off and then back on again from within settings (where you need to click "agree") will be more effective. In this case I've even noticed a difference between doing this by going directly into settings vs. letting Google Nav tell me that GPS is disabled, and agreeing to let it take me to the location settings.
- bizarrely, sometimes opening "GPS Test" app (market, free) identifies satellites more immediately than Google Navigation. Then after GPS Test can see them, I go back into Google Nav and it will see the satellites right away.
- if all else fails rebooting the phone has always done it (and then doing the same dance described above)
Don't get me wrong I wish it were more stable/reliable but the above seems to do the trick. When it locks at all - it locks right away. I have just forced myself to make sure that the GPS is working before leaving the driveway, or else I run the risk of being frustrated when I need to make a snap decision to go somewhere that requires navigational aid. For me it's almost as if the Android OS isn't properly wrapping its arms around the GPS hardware than an issue of the apps locking a fix.
Last night I almost missed a flight and even went as far as to say "I really need to start bringing my old GPS around with me again". I really hope to avoid this.

gps is not working

I received my phone yesterday and gps did just fine. I drained the battery and left it off while charging.
Today my gps won't work, I can't seem to get a single fix anymore (google maps, gps test, mytracks, nothing). I don't know what to do to fix it.
Also my battery drains extremely fast (5 hours and it's dead). Screen acounts for 63%.
I am having similar problems.
mainly with the GPS. it won't get a lock onto the satellites.
very dissappointing.
other than that it's a great phone.
hope it gets fixed with a firmware update soon!
Factory reset first step .

Same problem here.
GPS sees like 10 satellites but just won't lock.
Factory reset does NOT solve the problem. rooted - not rooted does not fix the problem.
Me too, see like 10 satlellites but cant get it lock TT
Just curious, are you guys rooted now? Have been rooted before?
What firmware are you all running? i am on XWKDD. today i upgraded to XWKE1 but didn't have to a chance to see if it fixes the GPS issue just yet.
Same problem here, sometimes I have 10 satellites but it just won't get a fix, no root here.
I get a fix within a few seconds of firing up the GPS, every time.
Even in my rucksack the GPS tracked me for an hour and a half, within a few metres accuracy, whilst cycling a few days ago, no problem.

I don't know anything more than the description it shows under Settings. I've seen theories that it uses the accelerometer, say for instance if you're driving through a tunnel. My experience is it makes my GPS accuracy worse rather than better, so I don't use it. But I'd suggest trying it both ways on the S2 to see if it makes a difference.
I went here:
http://www.google.com/mobile/navigation/
did a search on "sensor aiding" and got zero hits, so it seems Google doesn't want us to know what it is either.
usually over 50% of what people reporting that it isn't working is down to user error.
Have a look at this vid and do what this guy does on his SGS II. And see if it works for you

So, is that the new normal with your phone? Are locks working faster now, or do they typically take minutes? Is the accuracy ok?
It is odd that there are such differences between individual phones. If problems continue I would get it replaced if possible.

Having problems here too. tested today on the way to the supermarket, got a lock within a couple of minutes and worked fine for the duration of the journey. Didn't get a lock all the way back, GPS was definitely turned on, even stopped halfway home to reboot the phone and try again.
Just taken my wife's iPhone 4 outside which locked within 30 seconds, still can't get a lock at all with my GS2.
I've installed that GPS status application, but doesn't lock on to any satellites (at least not within two or three minutes anyway)

This thread, and posts like this, are what make me so frustrated with Samsung over the GPS issue. They never fixed the SGS, and now with their flagship top-of-the-heap phone they still can't get it consistently right. Even the best reports I've seen on the S2 don't match what some other phones are clearly capable of. It's hard to imagine Samsung is truly technically incapable of making GPS work, so I have to conclude it's just not worth the cost to them. They sold 14 million SGS's, with abysmal GPS, so they've apparently decided most don't care if it works well or not. They may be right, but for some of us it's one of the absolute key features. Very disappointing. Maybe HTC will get it right on the Sensation...

Gps won't grab a lock

So I the only thread I found on this was really old with no resolution so I'm starting a new one.
My gps will show like 0/24 on gps status immediately and not fix any. Earlier I got 2 satellites to fix ad that was all. This is outside in my car with a clear view of the sky. has anyone had any luck fixing gps issues?

Are you using the GPS Status app (developer MobiWIA)? I ask since that app allows you to add all the extra details in the notification bar while the GPS is searching for a lock. If so, have you tried getting a GPS lock in any other app (like Maps)? I can get a lock in all my other apps, as well as other GPS diagnostic app EXCEPT for the one developed by MobiWIA for some reason. I keep it installed though as I like to see the status in the notification bar.
I'd suggest downloading the GPS Status app if you already don't have it (the MobiWIA one), and go into Menu > Tools and click on Manage A-GPS State. Then click on Clear Cached GPS Data. Then click on the button that says Download Additional Files (well, says something similar to that). Then open up a different app and see if you can get a lock. I had to clear my GPS data and download those additional files before I could get a timely lock as well, but now I get a lock within 10 seconds while inside the house. This assumes that you haven't rooted tour phone. If you're rooted, you can do all this (and more) manually. Just clear GPS Cache and Data, and open up /system/etc/gps.conf to add any additional servers to the list, as well as tweak other GPS setting.
ya i tried those before, it's acting even dumber now, the top bad with the gps icon is solid indicating a lock. However any gps status app that I use will show no satellites locked. I get it to lock a couple after sitting there for a while on gps status sometimes though but its really shady
My past g2 did that, I returned it. Got a replacement, afraid to even root this beast.

so after you replaced it the problem was solved?
Same issue. The GPS on this phone sucks. It'll be 4 miles off sometimes and that's even if I can get it to lock.

Looks like the Verizon G2's GPS reception was compromised with the addition of wireless charging. T-mobile D801 here and I get a lock within a few seconds indoors.

Nope, still as ****ty as ever.
Although it doesn't happen as often, it still more often than others.
I'm past the remorse period.
So yeah.
Here's one from yesterday where I needed to get directions while driving, it locked but didn't do jack ****.

Well I guess atleast that means it most likely isn't completely hardware related.
Mine (T-Mobile) locks in just a few seconds, even indoors!
I always have data on, so it makes the process even faster (A-GPS makes use of the cellular antennas to acquire a lock faster). It works really well actually. I have at times the GPS off and even then, my location gets pin-pointed very quickly!
Cheers!
I have the GPS lock issue sometimes. What I have found to work for me is I turn airplane mode on let it sit for a second, then turn airplane mode off. By the time airplane mode is off and BT, LTE/CMDA signal notification are coming back to life my GPS has a lock and is working like it should.
YMMV on this, but it does work for me.
