Yesterday my phone locked me out, after charging it wouldn't accept my password & I had to do a hard reset.
Most of my utils/progs etc were installed to my memory card & I can use file manager to locate them & run them by running the exe file.
Is there any way of getting them onto the main screen without having to delete & then reinstall them - it looks like it's just the program shortcuts which haved been deleted.
Is it possibe to make new shortcuts & place them on the 'start' screen?
I read in a similar post that pocket mechanic might do something like this - would it, or is there another way?
Thanks.

just use resco file explorer...go into your memory card directory and copy the exe, then go to my device>windows>start menu>programs...then press right soft key menu>edit>paste shortcut

future tip:
get spb backup application, and back everything up every week or so.
Nice one, thanks for the help both of you.
Search the net for a free program called shortcutcreator i think i got it from one of the pocket pc freeware sites. It does what your looking for scans your card for applications then creates shortcuts in your program folder.

Hi I installed a program that did not work with WM5, I subsequently removed it using the Remove Program amplet.
However it still shows on the Program page.
How do I remove it from there?
Don't install non-WM5 compatible apps - it could seriously harm your blood pressure when you find you machine no longer works!
Look here for apps that should work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32698
Thanks for the help?
The program was reported as working on wm5.
The list does answer the question does it
Try a soft reset.
I had to do a hard reset once because I found apps were removed from the Programs list but were not really removed from the device.
Soft reset does not clear it
So will have to 2wait until I completly mess it up and have to do a Hard reset
Have you tried:
open file explorer
windows - start menu - programs
and deleted the shortcut from there?
this has happened to me when I have removed some apps and it has left the shortcut in programs

I have programs like: Email Setup, O2active...
1) how do i remove them so that after a HR they will return ??
2) i managed to find Email setup - but after deleting the files - i still have blanc shortcut in Start>Programs saying email-setup (with empty icon).
why?
can i remove only shortcuts but keep the program?
These things you wanna remove are installed everythime you hard reset. THey are programs in the extended ROM. These are customizations to WM5 that the retailer (imate, o2,qtek, t-mobile) put on the device.
If you don't want to install any of these do the following:
1. Hard Reset Device.
2. you'll go thru a series of screens:
2.1 Welcome Message
2.2 Align Screen
2.3 Tap and Hold tutorial
2.4 Password Configuration
2.5 Ending Screen that asks you to press screen to continue.
3. RIGHT AFTER step 2.5 (after you tap the screen) press the RESET hole.
This will bypass installing all the files in extended ROM which normally shown by a progress bar at the bottom everytime you do a normal hard reset.
4. Now you can Install the stuff in the extended ROM one at a time. Only the ones you need to install. To access the ExtendedROM (it is hidden) download Total Commander (search thru google) and type \EXTENDED_ROM in the navigation window and it will display the contents of the extended ROM.
I don't have O2 so i cannot explain to you what each individual .CAB file does. Just use a little guess work. THe O2Active, i believe is easily spotted. It's the biggest CAB file. Don't click on it so it won't install.
Tell me if this helped you out or if you need more clarifications.
Hola Jorge
First of all - Thanks for the great explanation !!
Although I do want most of the stuff, i already tried corporate mode (clean install) but I missed a lot of things.
therefor I installed Basic mode. (which hasnt got ALL the features)
But - some of the features i DO want to take away.
(NOT FROM EXT ROM)
only for now... programs in the Start>Program>
Lets say I wanna take the games away...
where are all the programs installed TO ??
I found some of them. but when I deleted the email setup for instance -
I still have an empty Email Icon in START>PROGRAMS>
(again i remind U - I wanna leave the ext rom as it is)
10x again !!
Some features in the ExtROM are installed in Corporate mode too, the sure way to customize is to bypass ExtROM, then install one-by-one the .CAB files you want.
Anyway regarding the Games, etc. they are part of the OS so cannot be uninstalled unless they came with the extended ROM like Backgammon that came with the JASJAR ExtROM.
To delete the ICON that is blank but still has text, go to \WINDOWS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\GAMES
You'll find the shortcut there. Or just to \WINDOWS\START MENU to see all the oter shortcuts in case you wanna remove other stuff.
The games are installed in WINDOWS and a shortcut is created to the Star Menu Directory. Just delete the shortcut.
What does "10x again !!" mean?
hi,
i am a former palm user and proud new owner of a spv m600. i have been surfing around but still am a little lost.
how does one delete one of the standard programs delivered with the device. for example, orange has delivered internet explorer or zip. i would like to delete them and add a different program, but i do not see them in the unistall list.
how is it done ? thanks in advance,
scott
u cant, those files are in rom and belong to the operation system.
You can possibly
Check out this link. You have to do a hard reset first
http://wiki.howardforums.com/pocketpc/index.php/Selectively_Bypassing_the_Extended_ROM
Device manufacturers are beginning to place unnecessary third party software preloaded onto PDA's, the same way computers come from the factory. Unfortunately, this new software is often buggy and of questionable usefulness. Also, there is no clean way to remove some of this third party software once it is installed. The best way to keep it from making your device buggy is never to install it in the first place.
Unfortunately, since many devices have no way to edit the Extended ROM since it is locked, we need a way around it. This How to details how we can get around the Extended ROM by soft resetting before it gets a chance to install and then selectively running the cab files with a nifty little program called Total Commander.
1. The first step to selectively bypassing your Extended ROM is to download Total Commander from here:
http://ghisler.fileburst.com/ce/tcmdpocketarm.cab
You need to take this file and place it on a storage card on your device. You can do this by syncing your device, opening up my computer double clicking on mobile device, double clicking on My Windows Mobile-Based Device, and then Double Clicking on the Storage Card. Copy the CAB file there, but DO NOT INSTALL IT ON YOUR SYSTEM.
2. The next step is hard reseting your device. Since all devices are different, I can't explain how to do this precisely. On my Windows Mobile 5.0 device, I just goto Programs then tap Clear Storage, and watch the device reset. After it resets, the Windows Mobile menu will come up and ask you to align the screen, teach you how to copy and paste. When it ends, a Screen will come up and tell you that configuration is finished and tell you to tap to continue. Now pay attention, timing is crucial. As soon as you tap to continue, you need to soft reset your device before the device customization menu gets a chance to install. You don't want the extended rom to begin installing.
3. Now after the device hard resets, you should get the today screen. If you don't and you're back in the align screen section then you should complete it again and soft reset a little bit later than when you started. If it says device customizing then soft reset immediately, before anything gets installed. From the Today Screen you need to goto Start>Programs>File Explorer. In File Explorer, navigate to your storage card and run the total commander cab. Total Commander should now install. After it's installed, goto Start>Programs and open it.
4. Now type "\Extended_ROM\" (match exact case) into the location bar of total commander to make your Extended_ROM suddenly appear. From this screen you will see the cab files . Choose the CAB files you would like to install. You have now bypassed the Extended ROM. You have some choices now. If you are like me and don't want specific programs to install such as antivirus, skype and backgammon. Run every cab, but those specific cabs. They won't install and muck up your system and you will be all set. If you want to do research and only install the cabs you need you can do that too. Sites like XDA-Developers often keeps lists of all cab files found in device extended roms and what each file does so you can decide what you want and what you don't.
Hope this helps you out
Sorry for this stupid question but this is my third day of having a windows mobile 5 xda (the cingular 8125) and I'm having problems installing .cab files. I started with the "DJVW HTC Wizard Optimizer 2.0.cab". I moved the cab to the root directory of the device, tapped on it, and it went through the progress bar, told me that it had installed, but then when I went to look for the newly installed program, i couldn't find it anywhere. I also tried this with a few games and other apps. What am I doing wrong that it keeps telling me that it installed fine, but I can't find the programs. Thanks for your help in this.

You may have tried but have you used explorer to check if the files have installed under "Programs"? I've often seen cab files install but the shortcuts not get installed though the programs are there. If you find them then connect to your PC and use explore from Activesync, create shortcust and drop them in the windows\start menu folder.
Yeah, I have tried that... I even tried to a search for the files to no avail. Any other ideas? I really appriciate the help.
You've got me stumped. Personally I always drop the cabs on the SD card and install from there thats the only thing I can see different. Maybe it's a problem with dropping it in the root directory - have you tried dropping it under the programs folder and then installing?
correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't the wizard optimizer cab just tweak a few settings/registey values? a cab of this nature will not show up in your programs list because it isn't a program, it just changes stuff. this is normal, the same thing happened when i installed some camera tweaking cabs. so the cab has worked fine, done its job, there is nothing else you need to do.
Is there any way to boot a Wizard into a safe mode?
I dont want to hard reset , it boots, I put it my passcode and THEN it hangs, so it boots but something is killing it before it fully loads.
I think its the today screen itself that is hanging in, is there any way to disable/remove today plugins through active sync ? Add/Remove programs wont work, so am thinking I could probably disable the plugins and then reboot.....
If when you boot the phone and it hangs, it is still visible by Activestink, you could do in to your phone and remove the plugin files... then reboot, and if that in fact was causing the problem you might be ok.
Otherwise you'll be hard resetting. Hope you made a backup!
Yeah, it syncs if I dont put the password in. Only thing I would lose would be my SMS messages which haven't been backed up in a while. Bugger will be getting a new license for Opera.
Any idea where the plugins files are?
The thing that broke it was I installed O2 plus. I re-enabled RhinoStats cause I wanted to know how much CPU was taking, and I think it was the combo of these two things which broke it.
If I hold the power key down it does ask if I want to turn off my device, which is "nice"..... it's not dead but it certainly doesnt do much.
It wont add/remove programs, it gets half way through then dies.
ANd what happens if you break a today plugin? Does it fail to load and then have windows clean up after itself? Or does it royally break things?
Wont let me delete the rhinostats dll file and I dont know which O2 files I can delete so I shall not be touching those.
Have removed the sim card, will see if that helps get it into some sort of working state so I can fix the problems it seems to be having. -> Answer, no. Just shows a different screen when it gets round to breaking.
Any more ideas?
Ok, I dont know how I managed to do it, but this time (having now re-inserted my sim and removed the 2Gb SD card) it didn't immediatly die.
I cant explain it, I dont know if this is a coincidence, but I have now de-installed O2 plus and disabled all the today plugins I could find. I shall now be running a new backup.....
Now let's see if it dies.....
On a side note, anyone know of a way of exporting all the SMS messages in a format that is readable by a desktop computer (preferably via notepad/nano)?
if u want to backup ur sms msgs, there is a file called cemail.vol.
copy it to ur storage card, hard reset, then copy iy back again.

Hi Mohammad, i can't copy/paste it as it is locked by something. How to do it?
Regards...
try renaming the current cemail.vol to anything ..like cemail.volx then copy the old cemail.vol into the same directory where the new cemail.vol resides. soft reset.

btw: even renaming does not work because of the file being locked...
Tried checking it on my phone, and yes it can't, i guess this only works with Smartphones. I'm sorry for that.
