ROM, Radio, HSPL ??? what does it all mean ? - HD2 General

Sorry really to be a pain here, but if someone does not mind, can they explain to me ROM, Radio and HSPL? I think i know that ROM is the software running on your phone. but it that version number increased everytime someone make a custom ROM out from an official one?
Radio as far as i know is for wifi, radio, etc. is this correct ? And final we have HSPL, now what do need that for, and for what use it is?
I am ofcourse asking these questions because i started to look at all the nice ROM's out there and not sure if i should stick to what im doing and keep going for the higher numbers. Would be very happy if someone could quickly explain them all properly and then maybe guide me to other links where i can read more...
Thank you in advance...

SPL - Secondary Program Loader - Think of it as the BIOS of your phone. It starts the operating system loading, and when you flash it verifies cid and region locks.
HSPL - Hard Secondary Program Loader - This is the creation of Bepe and Cotulla and Co. and is a hacked version of the official SPL that bypasses the checks when you flash a rom. It requires SPL 1.42.0000 on your phone to use.
This is the only version that works for telstra phones.
HSPL2 - is an upgrade to HSPL that allows witching between most of the available SPL's, and also their HSPL equivalents. (So if you want to install cooked roms, you might choose 2.08.HSPL, whilst if you want to go back to official, you would choose 1.42.0000 in the HSPL2 dropdown)
HSPL1024 - Is HSPL specific to the tmous hd2.
hardware ROM - The Read Only Memory of the phone. Think of it as the hard disk in your device. This is your storage memory.
'the' rom - When we talk about flashing roms, we mean the file that installs the whole operating system on your phone. This file is 'flashed' to the rom storage space, where it installs itself. After it finishes configuring itself, whatever is left is your available storage memory. (usually around 180 meg on a standard hd2)
Official ROMS have version numbers such as 1.66 , 1.72. 2.10.
Version numbers of cooked roms are meaningless. They only apply to that chefs roms. He/She applies versions as they see fit, however you can get a fair bit of info from the ro mthread title.
Example, they will usually tell you the base of the rom, i.e what stock rom was used as a base, 1.66, or 2.10 for example, and also the windows build version, (the 5 digit 21xxx number, i dont know whats what with those, but the higher ones are winmo 6.5.x) and more as you get used to reading them.
radio hardware - The different models have different actual hardware that connects to the mobile network. That is why you cant get 3g on at&t with a T Mo USA hd2. No matter what software radio you flash, the hardware is wrong.
radio rom - The radio software sits between windows mobile and the hardware. It controls the hardware based on what you want to do. There are all kinds of reports of better/worse battery life, connection strength, sound quality results when flashing digfferent radios.
flashing a radio does NOT require a hard reset, so wont affect your install.
Some roms (example the 576 meg enabled roms) require specific radios, read the rom posts for info.
The big danger with radio flashing is only applicable to tmous users, , if they flash a radio with ..51.. in the version number, their phone dies.

A useful read. I hope you got a thank you...

heh, well i got one now, cheers,

Dear Samsamuel !
Tx a lot ! Although I study this forum now since I am a HD2 owner (who never flashed a cooked ROM) I start to understand these cryptic topic now by Your explanations, making me more brave to try it once. Tx
The only thing I still can´t figure out is: WTF are the REAL differences of the stock-ROMS eg. what EXACTLY is changed between ROM 1.43 WWE, 1.48 WWE, 1.66 WWE, 1.72 (no WWE methinks).
I got so far to understand that some ROM-upgrades are just earlier ROMs with all the following patches included, but some are a major switch from WM 6.5 to 6.5.x and Sense 2.5.19xxxx to 2xxxx, giving new features like rotation in all Sense-Screens.
Plz, get me right, I spend all bad-weather-weekends hours and hours reading in the ROM-cooker-section, read XDA on my HD at airports and train stations but the shere mass of info provided - a little bit here, an info there - prevents me to get the WHOLE picture. There is a thread about which ROMs are officially out till now but with NO Info about the differences between them and which is a major UPGRADE (WM 6.5 to 6.5.x, Sense 1xxx to 2xxxx) and which is simply a better working "older" ROM.
I got my HD 2 now by the help of the geniousses here (You, Cookie, netripper, Moonah, netdrg, BsB, TX, metaldetector-lady and, and, and -and SKTools ) to work perfectly, smooth and without any fault but still would like some features like full rotational capab of Sense, which is provided by later ROMS. BUT WHICH ROM IS THIS ?
Maybe someone could add some infos ´bout that as a sticky thread ?? to decide wether to flash or not to flash when a new official ROM is issued by HTC, cause every ROM upgrade causes a hell of a work to make the HD2 work as smooth and flawless as before (I have now about 50 apps installed and configured to my needs).
Tx for Your understanding

Difference between HD2 Manilla 1.4X and 1.6X

Hi Guys,
I'm novice at this so ignore my ignorance.
I have 1.48 WWE installed on my HD2 and I was considering it flashing with the new release ... I think 1.66.
But I really dont want to go through the hassle of installing all the programs back onto my device unless it's worth it.
Is there anybody who can tell me what's new in the 1.66 version and is it worth upgrading .... I'm not a heavy application bur rather a simple user and I hate troubleshooting
So if you think its not worthwhile upgrading can you please let me know.
Any feedback will be welcome.
Cheers
Wolfy
Might help if you let people know what region you are...
Region - UK and the version used is the WWE one.
Cheers
If you´re fine with what you have, no need to flash.
The 1.66 ROM series bring all the hotfixes and updates which you might have installed already - in case you have to perform a hard reset, you would not have to install all those. There are other differences such as an updated Radio ROM version, but most of them are "under the hood" and not visible.
Many people here flash custom ROMs to get some more free memory space, or maybe another Manila/Sense functionality, but you will not find this kind of "big" difference between the official 1.43/48 and 1.66 ROMs anyway.
But, again, if you are fine with the stock ROM, there is no need to flash.
I have 2 HD2 phones now.
One is 1.48 ROM and other is 1.66 ROM
THe only difference I see is 1.66 show more memory. It says 448 Mb while 1.48 show less.
Not sure why...
Oh, I after hard reset memory is same on both phones. Now, I don't know the difference anymore

Base 1.72 vs Base 2.10

Sorry I did use the search tool but couldn't find an answer... What are the differences between these as well as advantages/disadvantages of each? With so many ROMs available I'd like to have something more to help me choose.
Thanks
I'd like to know this as well. All these different versions and ROMS using different ones etc is confusing. Also, the HSPL versions.. all confusing!
Base 2.10 has an awful and distorted noise in phone calls and awful bluetooth management not to mention more power consuption, these are the main disatvantages from my point of view.

A chef or somebody knowledgeable in cooking could answer this. The only thing I know for sure is that if you have HSPL (for the 1.43 stock roms), you can flash all base 2.10 roms and you can enable the 576 mb ram if you use a 2.07.50 or 2.08.50 radio because this what I got on my device as my signature states. Actually, I also managed to flash 2 1.72 roms, but I found them not to my liking so I stick to the 2.10 ones and I'm happy with them. Just to name a few: Astriaios, Energy, RTT Shock Star RTM, Leo firestorm, LIA Glass series, Ahen L6 series from xda, and from VIETPPC: Hoang An Leo, from PDAVIET: All, because they use only the 2.10 base. Most of these roms exist in 6.5 and 6.5.x so you guys will have the choice.
I stick to HSPL(1) because I think there is more choice in the 2.10 roms than in the 1.66 or 1.72 ones and because I don't want to limitate the choice of roms with HSPL2 for only a certain variety or roms (1.66 OR 1.72).
Hope that will help you guys to make a decision
Big thank to all the Chefs I mentioned above and to the others, you guys make all an awesome job!

The noise distortion and the battery consumption are RADIO related issues (if your radio keeps on searching for a signal, it will drain your battery quickly), not rom except for a well-known program whom shortcut had to be deleted from the Start menu because it was creating battery drain, I think it was Ameba or Swype, but I'm not sure. As for the bluetooth management, it may be issues concerning the Voice commands, but for the data sending/receiving, I never had problems with any of the above mentioned roms, except if the chef uploaded a version with a problem and reuploaded another version later.
Radios 2.06, 2.07 and 2.09 are said not to be power angry.
Miri has just lauched a version of his ROM with both bases over at HTCPedia for us to test.
I've been following this and it seens that, indeed, 1.72 (along with radio 2.09, that is not compatible with 2.XX) is better in terms of battery life and signal.
2.XX with latest WM builds seens to be much faster, on the other side...
Is still partial conclusions...
So is it basically a case of better all around performance in 2.10 and better battery life and signal in 1.72?

Don't know yet.
It seens that, in some places, radio 2.09, wich is incompatible with 2.10 base, performs much better in terms of battery life and signal.
I've experienced it myself.
Regarding performance, I can't tell you for sure it's base related of WM build related.
At this moment, considering the same ROM with the two bases, like Miris, I would go with base 1.72 with radio 2.09, but that's for my region. Don't know if it applies to everybody.
Just as reference, here's Miri's 2.10 base thread, where people asked for a 1.72 version for testing: http://htcpedia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1786
And here's 1.72 version with some valuable feedback: http://htcpedia.com/forum/showthread.php?p=52190#post52190
I think this is the best case for testing, since it's almost the same ROMs, only with diferent bases and radios (because of compatibility)

How does HSPL2 limit you? If anything it gives you more choice. With HSPL1 you only get 1.42.hspl and while you can flash any rom with that hspl version, with HSPL2 you can choose between either 1.42.hspl, 1.66.hspl or 2.08.hspl and still flash any rom you want - so you aren't limited to only 1.66 or 1.72 based roms.
The advantages of HSPL2 is that supposedly by matching the hspl version to the rom you get a more stable combo according to Cotulla. Another benefit of HSPL2 is that in order to revert to the original spl version you just choose this from the tool. No need to flash a stock rom via sd card etc.

opinions on roms and

windows 6.5, 6.5.x
when you flash a rom does it matter for these?
what if you want 6.5.x but currently have 6.5?
how does that work?
which rom do you like for the t-mous hd2 and why?
which rom has the least bugs, good battery life, and fast?
6.5 is what u hav now, 6.5.x only differs from the start menu going from the top of the screen to the bottom of it alsowen dealin with the newer roms 6.5.x usaly has the most updated software.... now always keep in mind to research the info before making a new thread, the reason for this is because when u go into a cooked rom thread all the info u need and pictures of the rom is in the thread... and please read before u do anything to your device
but i was wondering, if you flash a 6.5.x rom onto your 6.5 after you hspl will it still work or will it brick?? im not really sure about the whole flashing thing yet it still confuses me

when you flash, your current rom is completely wiped so it doesn't matter what version it is.

so to my understanding on flashing, you first hspl your phone then download your rom and radio first you flash radio then rom?
if you downgrade from 2.13 to 2.10.0 to hspl your phone, and you flash via micro sd, there isnt a possible way to brick your phone right? :/

doesnt really matter what order you flash them because you have a tmous, so the rom will work with any tmous radio, including the one already on your phone, and if there isnt a tmous radio on your phone then its already bricked
You probably learned that re: the normal leo, where the rom doesnt boot until the radio is flashed, but doesnt affect tmous.

Heh, theres always a chance, just like theres a chance you will fall over in the bathroom and break your neck whilst brushing your teeth, , , , , , hehe.
Make sure you have plenty of charge in your battery, and dont mess with it whilst its flashing, and it should be fine.

so whe i downgrade back to 2.10, you just install the rom right? and if your radio is 2.10 its fine right?
your radio should work fine with most of the roms that you install. If a particular rom requires a specific radio version 1 of 2 things will happen. 1) The chef will include it in the rom or 2) the chef will state the radio version needed as a recomendation. Sometimes a specific radio version will work better where as a different radio version may affect reception, battery life among other things. You can't however get whatever radio version you feel like because some radios are location specific (no need for a portuguese radio when you live in Chicago) Go to the XDA-Wiki and look for radios. They have a table explaining each radio version, it's carrier and it's location. Best of luck on journey through flashing. It is an exciting one.

go for it, you are flashing a tmous rom onto a tmous phone with a tmous radio 1 - included in the rom and 2 - already on the phone. It will alllll be fine.
Just wondering, what rom are you flashing? I understand your anxiety about flashing. Took me couple of months to get the courage to do so. I was afraid to brick my precious TP2.

[Q] HTC LEO software architecture

Hello,
I have a T8585 SH08LNW01064.
It's originally an orange one.
I use SFR, (i change my phone in a reparation shop after breaking the screen of my original one)
When had it i used HSPL3_PKG.exe and flash it with RUU_Leo_S_HTC_FRA_3.14.406.2_Radio_15.42.50.11U_2.15.50.14_LEO_S_Ship.exe downloaded from htc site.
I now realize that this ROM is not that i expected and i want to try ARTEMIS. BUt i don't arrive to flasch it now and i realize that i don't rellay understand the architecture of ROMs in my fone... as far has i understand the SPL or(HSPL or SSPL) is a kind of boot software who alllow the installation of only some type of ROM. After this there is the OS ROM, the driver ROM (RADIO)....
So my questioin are :
Is there any schematic or definition about the full architecture of HTC HD ROM, a compatibility board??
What is excatly the meaning of SPL HSPL SSPL, what are they roles?
I would like to know how does the differents ROM are linked, what are the constraint?
I mean as an electronician i imagine that the electrical part of the mobiles fone are the same so normally i can flash everything on every fone... But i realize it's not the case and i don't arrive to catch how does it work//
Thank You.
OK I can not fully answer your question here, but i will share what I know, also check out my little guide i wrote linked in my sig,
The bootloader is made up of what is called IPL and SPL. IPL stands for Initial Progam Loader which is resonsable for loading and initializing the hardware of the device on boot up. Without this the device does not work, it will not even turn on. This is why when you brick a device it will not turn on because you have removed or currupted the bootloader which contains the IPL. SPL stands for Secondary Program Loader wich is responsable for loading or booting up your ROM and allowing you to flash another ROM to your device. SPL wil only allow official or Signed ROMs to be flashed to your device this is due to the CID. HSPL stands for Hard Secoundary Program Loader wich does the same thing as SPL but the deference between SPL and HSPL is SPL can be changed flashing a singed ROM via RUU and HSPL can not be changed when flashing a signed ROM via RUU. HSPL also disables the CID and allows unofficial or custom ROMs to be flashed to your device.
Also software on phones and mobile devices are usually device spacific so you can not use it on other devices. This is why you can not just flash any kind of device software to your device. Bootloaders are very devices spacicic with out a bootloader a device will not do anything.
I do not know of any schematic or the such that is accessable by the general public or atleast I have not found one.
Just check out his guide. I think it'll give you what you need.

But seriously I would love to see anything you have are any info you can provide.
Hi!
Thanks for ur reply, sorry that i didn't find out the information in the forum before.
It's start to be more understandable for me.
So now next step, is how to identify exactly the model of my fone? i have the serial number, but i didn't wrote down what was the SPL and version i originally had
What are the limitations? why i can't simply put the latest version of HSPL, and flash all rom i want? Is there different electrical model of T8585 wich correspond to some specific SPL, wich correspond to specific ROM? Or is it just a question of association of good SPL/HSPL/ROM
And is there a compatibility board?
ANs i don't really understand the notion of bricking fone: it only happen if you damage your IPL, but as far as i understand, the IPL is never changed when you falsh ROM: at maximum you change the SPL...????
About ROMs:
I have:
official HTC 3.14.406.2 (04666) FRE
This ROM contain
System version 5.2.21913 (21913.5.0.94)
Manila 2.5.20181527.0
Radio drivers 2.15.50.14
Protocol version 15.42.50.11U
Here i don't understand well what is contained in the ROM and what could be changed separaltly, i mean i read about RADIO ROM... it means that i can flash a radio ROM separatly of the HTC official ROM?
I didn't undestand exactly also what are the different function of these:
System version: it's the operating system part of the ROM: WINDOW6.5???
Manila: It's the MMI developed by HTC, the "SENSE"???
Radio it's the drivers dor the radio chipset in my phone??
Protocol version i don't have a clue of what is it??
And is it for example the same radio wich are used for android and window?
Thanks again for your help.

I am still learning about all of this myself and someone else here may be able to give you a more in depth answer. But I will share what I do know with you.
To find if you have a T-Mobile T8585 just look at your HD2. If it has T-Mobile at the top of the front of the phone and it has a green send button and a red end button then it is a T8585. If it does not have this it is a International/Eroupean model. I am not 100% sure about this but you can either go to Settings>About Phone>Hardware information to get the model number or look under your battery. As I said I am not 100 % sure about that as I am on my HD2 right now and can not pull the battery and I am runningvAndroid and not Windows Mobile
As for your limitations question the T8585 better known as the TMOUS has more ROM and RAM than the regular HD2s. Therefore it has a little different internals then regular HD2s. The ROMs made for the TMOUS are made to to take advantage of it's extra ROM and RAM. Just as the SPL 2.08.0000 and SPL 3.03.0000 were made to work with it also. (It is also a SPL 3.10.0000 out for the TMOUS now) Being that the HSPL versions are made from the SPL versions then this is why you only want to flash HSPL 2.08 or HSPL 3.03 to the TMOUS. If you don't you may uncounted problems as these vesionscare made to work with the ROMs for the TMOUS. Now this does not mean that the ROMs for the TMOUS can not be flashed to a regular HD2 it just means you do not want to flash a ROM for the international HD2s to the TMOUS. For one they are not made for it's ROM and RAM, two they have radio versions that contain 51's in them and they will brick a TMOUS. Once you have flashed HSPL to your TMOUS you can flash any custom ROM that is based of of a stock TMOUS ROM but Nome other because like I said if it was not meant for the TMOUS itcwill not operate correctly on the TMOUS
The only compatibility board is the maim board/mother board of the HD2. But I think you can not put a TMOUS main board in a international HD2, bit I do think you can put a international main board in a TMOUS. My question is though why would you want to? Lol
You are correct when you brick a HD2 you have screwed up the IPL hence a brick HD2 will not even turn on. I am not exactly sure why flashing the wrong radio will brick a TMOUS but it THECIPL and the radio must have some kind of direst corolation to each other. Yes when you flash a ROM that has a different SPL version included in the image than it chang the SPL. Unless you have HSPL, but this only hold true when you flash via RUU not via SD card. When you flash via SD card the Bootloader is what actually does the flash and it is only programed to flash the intiror image not just the ROM and Radio if HSPL is present.
A full ROM image contains a SPL version, a splash screen, a radio version, and a ROM version. You can flash any of of these seperate from one another via RUU or SD card but it has to just be the item you want to flash in the .nbh file.
You are spot on with your understanding of whthe the system version, the mantilla version, and the radio version is. I am still not quit sure what the protocol version is myselfcso if you find out let me know.
Yes the same radios that you use in Windows Mobile are used for Android on THE HD2 as radio software is device spacific and can only be used on the device it was made for.
T8585 doesn't mean tmous, all regular hd2 are t8585. Telstra are t9193, and I'm not sure the tmous even HAS a Tcode...., im sure it must, and it could be t8585, but just letting you know.
Also, regular hd2 3.14 roms come with 3.03.0000, so spl 3.x is not tmous specific, and indeed if you flash a 3.14 rom onto a regular hd2 without having spl 3.x it will not work. (Well it will, but badly) But you already knew this from your guide!

Once again thanks for the info Sam. This is how a forum should work everyone contributing knowledge to help one another. And if someone says you are wrong learn from them and not get made and lash back at them for only trying to help you out. I want to say thanks to all the members that are regularly on here trying to help and inform people as you all have taught me so much sense I have been here and have all been more than gracious. I recently started venturing to other HD2 forums here on XDA and have been greatly offended by some members that are there. Thankscagain to onecand all.
you are most welcome, and im glad you dont take offence, cos none is intended. Knowledge is power, and all that, hehe.

HTC HD2 T-Mobile Help Needed!

Dear Developers, I am a noob and want to install Android on my device, have done a lot of research on this topic but can't find any suitable ROM.
I am having HD2 with the following Configuration:-
ROM Version- 1.43.110.2 (70315) WWE
ROM Date- 10/28/09
Radio Version- 2.04.50.22_2
Protocol Version- 15.26.50.07U
Manilla Version- 2.5.19202525.0
OS Version- 5.2.21864 (21864.5.0.81)
Can anybody tell me how can I port Android 4.0(In SD CARD) with HTC Sense into it. Which ROM will be suited and how can i put that ROM. Or is there any method like- getting Original HD2 ROM and then after that all ROMs support the device?
Every time I search on internet I get confused and sometimes scared about DEAD HD2s. I really love my phone, the only problem is that it doesn't support .NET3.5 Framework and because of that there are very less apps available. Once I get android, my phone will shine like a diamond.
I am really not that concerned of HTC Sense what I want is Android 4.0 or 2.3 with all functions properly working.
Regards,
Arun Wadhwa

If you want to install SD Android there is no chance of bricking your phone. Just download the ROM from the thread (check the SD Development section) place the 'Android' folder on the root of your SD card then run CLRCAD and HARET. As for choosing a ROM, there is no Sense 4 ROM, but aside from that there's basically anything else you could possibly want. People can't tell you the 'best' ROM because different people like different things. Try some out, and decide for yourself.
In future please search properly, everything there ^ could be found with a forum search.
But Still?
You are saying right, but how will I find the right version? I am having a TMOBILE 1.43.110.2 (70315) WWE ROM.

What do you mean by 'right version'? WinMo doesn't affect SD Android, the right version is the one you like best. As long as you have a .50 radio (which you do) you're fine.
@Nigel, 2.04.50 radio doesn't count as a 50 radio, (at least as far as unlocking ram and not bricking tmouses) 2.05.50 and below (and perhaps 2.06.50, I forget without checking) are not tmous compatible.
@op, don't confuse your t mobile issued REGULAR hd2 with all the talk about the tmous, or t mobile USA hd2. You have a regular hd2. (Proven by the rom version)

I thought something was fishy with the ROM version, thanks for clearing that up. Either way, @OP just update your ROM to the latest version or flash a newer radio then do as above for Android.
I replied in your other post....you need latest rom with radio 2.15..(radio above 2.08 is compulsory for Android) ....install hspl4..and then put SD build on card and enjoy...I recommend trying the new native SD way...fastest rom just like nand install
Please go through stickies in the Android forum or search in xda not Google
Samsamuel has enough experience in this forums with guiding and preventing people from bricking their tmous hd2 with flashing. 51 radios...so if he says it's not tmous...it is not...happy flashing

Radio?
You mean if I update my ROM my radio will be automatically updated? If yes, then i only have to put an android rom in sd card and then install it? I hope there is no risk of bricking my phone. Is the latest ROM (WM) available on HTC website(INDIA) suitable for this? Please reply guys! If its really that simple, my phone will shine like a diamond. Please answer while keeping my ROM in mind! Your help will be appreciated.
If it's to be done manually(Radio), then how to do it and what are the risks?
correct, stock roms include spl and radio.
get hspl4
use it to set 3.03.hspl (NOT 3.03.0000, thats stock)
run the 3.14 rom you wanna flash over usb
radio will now be 2.15.50 and rom will be 3.14
go ahead and put sd android on sd
spl?
Okay, so let's make it clear. First, I've to download a ROM from htc India's website, then I've to install it by connecting it through USB, after that I've to download any one ROM from xda developers' website(of android). Then what? What was that 'spl' thing you were saying? How to change that spl, etc... Can you please elaborate. Your help would be appreciated.
no
1/ bootloader
2/ hspl4.exe --> 3.03.hspl (this is a hacked spl, , spl = secondary program loader, , ,it starts the phone, teh hacked one allows the wrong rom to be flashed without failing, , you do NOT currently have hspl because you chose 3.03.0000 which is the factory spl)
3/ bootloader
4/ install the indian rom over usb
done.

Why elaborate when everything's already there for you? There's a forum search tool at the top of your page, as I stated earlier - USE IT.
What?
I am currently having SPL- 1.42.0000, I've already listed my ROM and radio. So first I need to get a new rom from HTC with SPL 3.03.0000 and a better radio. Then I've to install HSPL 3.03 via HSPL4, after that I've to put Android ROM in SD CARD formatted in FAT32, then run the CTRLPD(or whatever) and haret.exe, then I am done! Aren't I right?

Thank You!
I read your comments and researched on many websites and found one with easy guides- Addictivetips or something like that. Now I know the whole procedure. Thanks to you and that website. One last thing, do u think their are any chances of getting hd2 bricked with the rom i mentioned, just last question. Is it safe?
No you don't have a tmous, only tmous risks brick from wrong radio.
