How to correctly do a Nandroid backup? - G1 General

I transitioned from Super Ds latest to Test 5 of CM. After trying CM's rom, I wanted to go back. However, when I restoreed my Super D rom, all of my apps are missing. My widgets are gone. Whenever I click on an app, it says "Application is not installed on your phone."
What am I doing wrong?

If you are using a well know recovery like Amon_RA's, it has an option in the "Backup/Restore" submenu to choose Nand +ext backup. If your apps are on your sdcard, then they will be stored on the ext partition and that option will allow you to back them up.
I am pretty sure that all recovery's have some variation of this, if not, I suggest moving to Amon_RA's recovery anyways because it is based heavily on cyanogen's recovery with lots of extras and a great menu.

I am using Amon's recovery. Thank you for your response. But why is it that when I do a Nandroid backup and then restore with CM's test 5, all of my apps are loaded? Does it mean that my apps are loaded in the internal memory then?

Did you do something like switch SD cards or reformat when you reflashed your non CM rom?

[Q] Flashing roms erases data/settings/apps?

I'm new to the android OS and came from windows OS. If i flash a rom that doesn't delete "/data" and don't like that rom and I flash a different rom that doesn't delete "/data", will all my apps, settings, data will be intact?
Reason I'm asking is because I don't want to re-install all my apps and set up my settings/configs with each new rom. Thanks.
Yes. 10 chars
Be sure to make a backup with Clockwork Recovery before you install a ROM. This is for 2 reasons; 1) incase something goes wrong you can restore from your backup and 2) you can go into the advanced restore menu *after* you have installed a new ROM that required you to wipe /data and just restore the /data portion of your last backup and get all of your apps and contacts back.

[Q] Best practices going from CM7.1 to 7.2?

It's been a long while since I flashed a ROM and I am bit rusty on the process.
I downloaded the ROM for vision.
Where do I put it? On the phone or the external SD card?
Boot into CWM and then? Do I need to clear cache, data, anything?
And then I flash the ROM, right?
Put the ROM on the SD card. You can flash it from ROM Manager, or as you say boot into recovery and flash it from there. Make sure you backup your current ROM before you start though.
You should be fine just to wipe cache and flash it over the top.

Thank you. I tried doing that. A couple of issues:
1. Market showed only about 10 apps. I couldn't find all my apps. I thought market synced and downloaded any missing app.
2. More importantly, I could not download any app. I kept getting market error. I tried rebooting and wiping market data, but nothing.
I went back to the backup. Any pointers?
Back up your apps via titanium backup the do a full wipe the flash new rom, the restore apps via titaniumbackup

[Q] Restoring a backup

I'm having trouble restoring a nandroid backup.
I had CM7 running nicely running from internal. But I got bored and wanted to try an ICS ROM. So, I booted into CWM recovery, and did a backup first thing. Then I did the whole wipe and flash thing, and got the new ROM up and running. After a couple days, I decided that ICS is still too flaky for everyday use, so I decided to flash back to my good ol' stable CM7. So I booted back into recovery, wiped, and restored the backup I had made previously. But when I boot up, things are wonky. I have my homescreen and wallpaper back, and many of my other customizations, but none of my apps seem to be installed. My homescreens have placeholder icons, and the widgets all have an error message.
I've tried restoring several times, with different combinations of wiping system, cache, dalvik, etc. But I've yet to hit the right sequence. What's the "correct" way to restore back to what I had? I hate to have to set everything up all over again.
What version of CWM are you using? Some of the older versions do not wipe the newer nooks properly.
If you really want to be sure you have wiped everything, go to my tips thread linked in my signature and get version 5.5.0.4 either for emmc or a bootable SD. Then flash my format partitions 5, 6, and 7 zip. Then restore your backup and see if that does it.

I have version 2.5.0.1 now. Took a quick look at your tips thread - looks like I have some reading to do! I'll get a newer CWM and see how it goes. Thanks!

[Q] TWRP Recovery- How to use?

So I am currently on Paranoid Android and wish to switch to another ROM (most likely AOKP or PACman just to try). In TWRP recovery, what would I select to just back up my app data and NOT my ROM, and after that is possible, what must I restore to get it back and in what order of flashing alon with my new ROM and GAPPS???:silly:
You can go into TWRP and backup and choose what partitions you want to backup. However, I'd suggest you backup everything and don't try to restore the data to another ROM.
I use Titanium to backup all app data as well as MMS history, WiFi networks etc then do a full backup in TWRP. Then wipe everything and flash the new ROM. Then boot up and reconfigure accounts and restore apps + data with titanium.
It may be a little more effort but this way you can always roll back to the previous setup if anything goes wrong and you're less likely to run into any weird issues from moving data around between ROMs.
Or you could try something like app2zip off the play store to make a flashable zip of only selected apps and data which is probably safer than the whole partition. If you do a full backup first you can always rollback if something goes wrong.
When using Titanium Backup, when I hit run backup, where does it go and how do I restore it after I flash my new ROM. Or do I do the update.zip option and flash that when I'm doing my new ROM?

It goes into a folder on /sdcard called TitaniumBackup. When you flash a new rom, you will need to redownload titanium backup. When you redownload it, it will find the backups and you can click on the app to restore it.
Theres no need to use the update.zip method. Do it like this ^

[Q] Change rom question

I have a nexus 4, which unlocked and rooted standard android on it.
I have backed up my apps with titanium and backed up the rom via TWRP.
My question is if I change to a different rom using ROM Toolbox, will I be easily able to restore my apps from the phone or do I need the backed up elsewhere, does all the phone content get wiped?
Related to the above can i restore my existing rom, easily if I want to go back to it?

You do not need to wipe (format) your internal SD card so all your data will still be there (songs, pictures, apps on which you have performed backup on via titanium etc).
You should be able to restore your apps with titanium but sometimes there are apps that cause some problems.
And sure, you can go back to your nandroid backup (your old rom) at any time with TWRP.

Thanks for the advice.
So if I use rom toolbox, I just download and install a rom as zip, but do not wipe anything, is that correct?
