Hey everyone,
I'm sorry my first post couldn't be of much benefit to anyone, but well, I joined these forums so I could learn and then hopefully contribute to the community as well.
My question is,
For a casual multimedia user and a heavy web browser like myself, what would be the better phone? the Leo or the Nokia N900?
I prefer the Leo because of it's larger screen, faster processor, customization ability and plus, WM just feels like home
However, I've heard complaints from many saying that the speaker is too distorted, the keyboard is rubbish and the touchscreen is oversensitive. Now, these are complete dealbreakers for me and even if I can live with the speaker, I need to have a proper, usable keyboard and an intuitive interface, which the N900 already has.
I'm also pretty concerned about the audio sync issue, on EVERY HD2, that occurs on videos making the audio usually lag behind the video about 100-250ms. That, alone, is worth making me not consider the device, despite it's strengths against every other phone.
For this reason, I can't really decide on which to buy and have come to you guys for suggestions.

Well first the leo..
You got a large screen Looking tv is simply amazing. The design of the leo is so slim ok the n900 has keyboard but it could be thinner for a qwerty slider.The second question how long do you use your phone 2 years or more?
The HD2 have very large ram and a fast proccesor. It future proof. If there comes a new version of windows or a cool android port big possibility that the hardware is capable of running the new OS. For the rest there are much more apps for the htc you can choose different navigation software and more. But oke the n900 is growing. In my eyes the hardware (exceptbattery and the glass of the screen wich can break) the device is solid as rock wifi, gps it al works nice and fast. Normally your device will be looking as new. Evrything fits nicely to gether no dust in the device etc... BUT one disadvantage you need to tweak your device flashing a custom rom installing some needed things cookies hometab, Srs wow hd, a better movie player. But ones done your device is perfect fast, the battery hold a long day. And you got a great device. About the touchscreen and keyboard if you practice with you can learn how to type with. But for the rest the touchscreen works good it is sensetive reactes fine in my opnion. Ok this was the LEO.
You can make windows perfect for you.
N900
Good device lots of linux developers. Works good maybe a bit better out of the box then leo. But less apps. The device is thicker. But the opterating system is a bit smarter. The device is in my opnion uglyer than leo.
Conclusion:
If you like a little bit tweaking and not to noob with electronics. And dont gonna cry if you installed a program that make your device unstable. And not the first thing that you are gonna do is calling htc if you got problems. Then you will love your htc hd2.
If you are a customer that not is intrested in the device it self and you hate complicated things etc.. than choose the n900

LEO Ultimate (greatest possibilities of a mobile device).
But in fact of hardware hd2 always powns with any phon
But the N900 is more intuintive.
But if you don't change settings evryday. Sense works simply and intuintive in my opnion.
Only if you are wanna play a XVID (example) you need 3d party apss with are not always intuitnive.
It works fine stable and with cookies hometab perfect.
in my oppinion the leo is the best phone i´ve had, but it all depends on the users needs, interrest and the time u want to spend customizing the phone to your needs and likings... ..
my advice would be try out but phones in a shop and take the one you like the best... ...

ps. NEVER experienced oversensitivity on my leo´s screen, and the keyboard is easy to use when u get used to it, otherwise there are alot of alternatives to the winmobile keyboard..
I'm don't know N900 too much but I have some inputs about the HD2 that you will like!
The touch screen has been a bit sensitive, I love the sensitivity BUT it gets in the way when typing on the keyboard, making it suck big time kick ass hard!
However, I just flashed to the Artemis v14 ROM (which is a custom ROM if you didn't get that far in your research).
To my big surprise, either because I forgot to turn off the vibration feedback, or the keyboard was actally improved, cuz now it's almost impossible to misspress anymore.
I am so satisfied with the keyboard now, so that problem is 100% gone!
Personally, before I got my HD2, I was a bit against it not having a hardware keyboard, but now I'd rather get raped than have a HD2 twice or tripple its thickness just to get a hw-keyboard.
Summary: The keyboard on HD2 is great now.
With time, I got either used to the little distortion the speakers has, or the quality got a little bit better (I think it actually did! I always have the lowest volume though).
So, the speaker might not be what u expect when u pay so much money, but the sens of the screen is good and the keyboard works flawlessly!

You cannot beat the HD2 for web browsing Opera 9.7 is the best mobile browser ever made and in landscape it's simply huge, you can read pretty much a whole web page width as it was designed.
The default keyboard is very good in my opinion however I use SlideIT which I think cannot be beaten, it's a Swype variant but better.
However you must take battery life into consideration, and I don't care what people say, the HD2 has a poor battery life. I carry a spare as a matter of course and rarely burn through one a day, but just in case it's an essential thing to have.
I wouldn't swap my HD2 for the world with a custom ROM, and a few tweaks nothing can beat it.
what site do you open when you are browsing the web?
if it's full of flash then go to the n900 or android phone
if it's just the regular web pages just go with the hd2.
as the hd2 won't get the flash 10.1 from the adobe
the hd2 will be perfect if it got the flash 10.
huge screen, the pretty htc sense, best web browser (if the web without flash), very fast snapdragon, beautiful design, and many more

I am the tweaking, modding sort of person and frankly I do browse a LOT of webpages.
From your feedback @jan-willem3 I have to agree with you, the Leo is better looking and more modder friendly, it is also much more powerful than the N900.
From everybody elses, I see the keyboard has some issues and since I'm coming from an E90 communicator I presume I'd just have to get used to touchscreens. Go figure.
Anyhow, you guys have convinced me, I'm springing for the HD2 since here it is a little bit cheaper than the N900. I will miss the TV-out but I think the screen is big enough for movie watching.
Just a few more questions, does an Apple Wireless Keyboard work properly with it? and does it have any problems handling 16GB microSD cards?
un fair to compare these two devices . leo leads by million miles ( multitouch capastive screen, the on screen keyboare is bigger than the hardware keyboard on n 900 , more power processor , more than twice ram (576 vs 256 ). bigger screen ,and finally (windows os ,means push email ,revolutionary office ,and allot for business needs0
I had an N900 which is good but the battery life is rubbish. I tried two different phones and three batteries incase I had a duff phone. In the end I exchanged the N900 for the HD2. On the N900 the battery would last three hours and using the same amount of web browsing, phone calls and playing with the phone I can get one and a bit days from the HD2.
Some of the features of the N900 are better than the HD2, uploading to facebook, and I could get my location uploaded to facebook and twitter.
I also liked the cover to protect the camera lens on the N900, what I did not like was the lack of apps and the general feel taht the N900 was a work in progress.
I have the used both phones.

The films seem to run a lot smoother too than on the HD2 despite the HD2's superior spec.
A nice touch of the N900 is the built in stand to stand the phone at an angle while watching films.
The HD2 runs really nice in WIFI router mode though and my laptop runs great and fast online off the HD2, so if you're going to use a laptop with for browsing while out then the HD2 is better suited.
However, the HD2 is much better looking & more customisable.
The N900 is actually very chunky though. But it has the bonus of a 32gb Storage on board which is very nice.
For me the N900 has a much better battery life while browsing & film watching. I guess it's due to the slightly smaller screen & processor.
Id love to say the HD2 as this is what I use daily, but for what you need the N900 is probably better.

I agree with you, except that the battery life is better because of the lesser backlighting and the smaller processor. Both screens (HD2 and N900) have the same resolution, as you know.
Tbh, the only reason I'm not buying the N900 is because of the screen, which I'm downgrading on. My current E90 communicator has a screen with slightly lower resolution (i.e. 800x352) than the N900 and the HD2 but it measures 4.0 inches. Losing screen real-estate is not something I'm willing to do.
The N900 has an amazing browser but the HD2 has more screen space to offset that. Both can play multimedia but I'm holding off on the HD2 because of this. No escape since this seems to affect the HTC Desire too.
In the end, I do think the N900 is better for me, but it's size and small screen put me off. What do you guys think I should go for, then, as an alternative?

I would not recommend you get this.
Browsing is very painful and it only plays MP4 out the box, no avi!!!!!
It just doesn't run nice IMO but does have a nice screen & camera.

there are so many other amazing keyboard for winmo out there. i hate the standard htc keyboard too, i really hate it. the first app i installed was the fingerkeyboard 2.1 ^.^ i just love it.
and yes, some ppl say the screen is oversensetive.. it truly is if u compare it to older winmo devices or another capacitive device BUT this problem is already solved ^.^ there are some cabs on this forum to decrase the screen sensetivity. im using this since 2 months now or so, and its really better

and hey, for me, the speakers are okay, well i only use them for utube or when my phone rings, for what else should i? why should i watch movies on my hd2 without earplugs? i mean, we got so amazing sound quality with WOW SRS

I'm pretty convinced about these problems being easy to solve, but I just saw this. Personally, this is a major flaw that will seriously affect my movie-watching.

Yeah but I dooo want to watch movies on my HD2 when it comes, that's what the big screen is for, no?
The thing is, I'm just letting a sync issue change me over to Maemo, a smaller, resistive screen and a whole lot of included bulk. But to me, movie watching on the go is CRUCIAL.
For the guys with this issue, is it really that bad? Even with TCPMP and CorePlayer? What if we lower the bitrate a bit?

Actually, does the screen "feel" small? As in do you ever squint at the screen to watch videos or struggle to read text? Or is there not enough room to see things properly? If it doesn't I might just go for it over the HD2, the main reason being the audio sync issue on the HD2. Have you tried playing videos on the HD2 and noticed any discernable lag in the audio and video?
Yeah, mine has terrile lag unless I use TCPMP then it's fine, doesn't work for everyone though.
The N900s screen is fine for me, no squinting, it just looks a bit small in appearance as the phone is quite chunky so it just doesn't look so big compared to the chunky phone it's on.

I would have agreed about SlideIt until the 2.13 ROM update was released. Now, the top performer is Swype for me, once again. I just bought SlideIt too, darn it!

I had a Tytn II then a Touch Pro before switching to the Touch HD. I was VERY worried after reading all the negative issues raised on this forum:
1. poor screen brightness
2. unable to play movies well
3. GPS lag in tomtom
4. poor battery performance
5. on screen keyboard not great
All I can say is I've had the Touch HD for a week now and its FANTASTIC.
1. Screen brightness is very good. At least as good as the iThingy (the wife has one of those). Out the box the HD comes with brightness on auto so itsn't that bright.
2. I took 5 movies from my PC, all mpeg4 AVIs (no 720p or course) ,24fps,around 660x360 in resolution, bitrate around 1000kbps....not converted for a phone in anyway, as they were when I downloaded them. All but one played absolutely perfectly. Only one is very slightly jumpy but perfectly watchable (bitrate too high).
3. I use GPSGate so maybe that helps but I have zero lag on the GPS in tomtom. With the big screen it looks amazing. so much easier to read than on the Touch Pro.
4. For me, battery is better than the Touch Pro. I haven't tried watching endless videos yet but I get 2 days out of a battery using phone, a bit of GPS, some wifi, some mp3s.
5. keyboard isn't perfect but its ok. there are plenty of other better keyboards you can download.
So lets try and be a bit more positive guys
I accept its not the perfect phone but until the tegra chips and wm7 appear, its as good as it gets and I love it!
Yes i agree, this is the best (in my opinion) windows mobile out there.
I love the screen,
only problem i have is that alot of applications/games are not compatable with the display, but im sure there will be updates to run these apps soon
marcel where do you have the screen brightness set to?
Today I changed the brightness to maximum when on battery. I'll see how that goes over the weekend to see what effect it has on battery.
But I found the auto brightness fine. I'm in the UK so don't get a lot of chance to test it in bright sunshine

Love the brightness and resolution, hate the viewing angle... Slightly off angle and it's very yellowish and unsharp, hence the IPhone and such look better in video's... Facing the screen however, it's awesome, a contender for any screen.

I never compared with the Pro, only the Diamond (yes much longer battery life, both bigger battery and good software optimization), but my power usage still drains the device pretty fast Regular usage easily gets me a couple of days though.

Just got TouchPal... The only non-hardware keyboard ever that really blew me away. I can type AT LEAST as fast on that as on my Blackberry Pearl, and that is a big statement.
TouchPal is 100% compatible with WVGA/Touch HD and even has a Diamond/HD/Pro skin.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The only thing that I got left on my wishlist (after having had Nokia, Samsung, Blackberry, several HTC's and an iPhone) as Windows Mobile 7 and the Tegra platform. WM7 looks very, very promising though. I hope it will be compatible with the HD, it's really totally different from the current WinMo interface.

According to the working programs post the list of apps that works is ten times longer than the apps that don't. Those few odd apps will be ported or upgraded quickly as this device is quite popular, IMHO.
+1 for enjoying an awesome device and not ragging on tiny little features.. no device is perfect and they will never make a perfect one, there's just so much more money in making nearly-perfect things

This is the best touch phone on the market all things considered, and the best thing is with time it'll get better due to the nature of HTC and WM. I've had this phone for 4 days now and still can't put it down, not opnly does it run smooth but looks sooooo sleek and stylie. I've already posted this statement in another post but

best mobile out there right now love it. I've had tytn11, iphone, diamond, blackberry storm but HD is simply the best. I did have my reservations, especially after reading alot of negative reviews including some opinions here but after few days playing around with it I'm very pleased.
Ok guys just trying to get opinions out there. Currently using the Touch HD. Came from a Nokia device so I love the speed of symbian compared to Windows. It seems like the time has come for me to figure out if I want to keep the Touch HD or not.
Pro:
I love the big screen.
It looks sleek.
Easy to flashfirmware and tweaking performance is fun.
Con:
Incoming calls is a little laggy. Sometimes calls come in as unknown.
Phone feels a slower than ones I've used before.
No TV-Out.
*Having a keyboard would be a plus. But without it is not a Con*
I'm actually debating getting rid of the Touch HD for either the Xperia X1i/X1a so I would gain a keyboard and overall use would stay the same.
Or I thought about getting the Nokia 5800 tube, so that I gain the TV-Out feature to display gps on my indash and have the feel of symbian again.
Or ultimate would be to get the new n97 which has a large screen and keyboard.
What do you guys think? I think the biggest thing bothering me is the phone feelings a bit laggy compared to my previous nokia phones.

I dunno, going to the X1 isn't going to do much for you other than the physical keyboard. It sounds like love Symbian so maybe just wait for the N97.
I have both Nokia n95 an htc HD, HD is much better! 1 thing above all: HD is fully customizable, and you can improve it with new official roms or with a lot of cooked roms.......

I have the HD and the Nokia Tube.
The Nokia Tube is crap.
Slow as hell, and the worst GUI i have ever seen.
Flash a few cooked roms first... see if that makes your HD the device you always wanted...

I also own a n95 and the hd, and the nokia is no match for the hd in any aspect. Once you get used to the hd big screen and lots of features, you wonder how you could waste your money in the nokia set.
The hd is fairly fast for me, the gps works much better than the n95's. It fully customizable, the battery lasts longer, the rds radio of the hd is much better that the visual radio of the n95 (in Spain the rds system is spread all around the country while the visual radio is scarcely used), there's a lot of sotware available for the hd... in summary, i would't change it.
But each user asks for different features so...that's just my opinion.

You could try SPB Full Keyboard
Symbian UI sux the biggest time ever!!!!
There is no Symbian or Nokia I have ever tried that is nice or fast, the N96 is a piece of s..t! I stompted on the damn thing into pieces, seriously, kept freezing and the menu's are a nightmare, menu's within menus within more menus.... The "cons" you mentioned are nothing compared to any Symbian.
"TV Out" its a gimic function of Samsung and Nokia, the quality of TV Out function is way way below VHS quality making it a whole waste of time IMHO, anyway just my 2 cents in a useless topic.
Perhaps Symbian seems more suited to your needs
I went shopping for a new HTC device yesterday.
I looked at the Diamond, Touch Pro, Xperia X1, G1 and the Touch HD.
I found the Diamond's screen size to adequate, but the lack of storage card baffles me.
The Touch Pro was just to heavy but the keyboard was very useable + storage card.
The Xperia's keyboard felt better, but the weight killed it for me. The screen is also far too small to handle WVGA.
The G1's 16million colurs makes the same difference with the screen as an iPod. HTC really should move to 16M colours asap. The interface was great, but you can tell it is in its infancy. I will be watching Android keenly over the next year.
Then we have the HD :
The screen size makes a huge difference - 3.8" WVGA is the perfect size for this res (2.8" is borderline too small).
The device is the exact same size as the iPhone (I think the box matches Apple's packaging as well...) This fits nicely in the hand and feels very light.
The screen size also helps with finger inputs, even on the standard keyboard!
The device is fast. I found no lag running through the programs, even while leaving 10 open. The 512Mb RAM certainly helps there.
A hardware keyboard for me is a con. When I moved to one (XDA Mini S), I found it strange to get used, but percivered, when I moved back to an onscreen keyboard, I certainly did not miss the physical kb.
After playing with all 5 devices, I have payed up for the HD.
It'll be delivered on Tuesday.

I do like the ability to flash new roms as I am trying to keep up with Laurentius26 and the L26 roms. It seems the V7 seems to be pretty responsive. As far as the tube VS touch HD Speed comparison, thanks for the info.
On the TV-Out feature, I would only use it to display GPS on my indash so I can easily get around by getting a decent car mount I guess. I've been keeping up with that thead and haven't found one I liked yet.
Bringing up the point that symbian isn't as customizable friendly I guess it would advantage me to stay with the touch so that I can always flash different roms and see which I like better. And between the Xperia and the Touch HD, thats going to be a hard button keyboard VS big screen.
Now to go read up on some more interesting apps/games to install. Thanks again guys! Keep the input coming if you like! I appreciate it.

the touch hd is quite impressive as allrounder. i'm more than a little jealous of the screen compared to my own omnia.
but omnia is till my personal choise of today; huge internal memore (i currently use 16 gig + 16 gig sdhc) although it's 3.5mm jack is indirect, if does come as adapter in the sales box. it is a bit fatter than the hd though but not too much- 12.5mm. and it has the tv out u mentioned. anyway it is to my taste right now.

this one is a pure wm platform wich seems to leave even hd trailiang in the dust. but remember that with a screen as big as 4.1 inches u may need to resow your pockets in all shirts and pants. still size matters when using gui's and you hd is already a good example there.
none of them packs a built-in thumpboard though. for that u may need to to go n97, touch pro, xperia, HTC dream or G1. i've no experience with android yet. but as for wm's i hear experia is annoyingly slow, and if u already have trouble with the speed of the HD u may need to stay far away from this one. all of them packs better screenresolutions than omnia, but the benefits of higher resolution without bigger screen on these devices is argueable. on 3.2 inches i don't miss the extra pixels on windows mobile.
a good thing might be if others told about their experiences with various models. my dad for one would never trade in his HD for my omnia. but if i had to buy a new one today i'd still choose it over the others out there.

X1 will have the same problem in terms of the lag.
keyboards are good, but you dont need them as much, you need to get use to the touch screen... give it more time...
If you want something just as good as the HD with no Lag, go iphone, but then you drop alot of good things with the HD.
i did at first contemplate selling off the HD and going in for the iphone, but i have used the iphone, and liked it for the whole 2 months i had it before i went to a smaller phone... and then to the HD...
the iphone was basic to what i needed it for, the hd works perfectly...
let me tell you, after 3 months, you will be fine with the hd, but the lag will increase... especially in calls... and if you are like me.. with an ever increaseing phone book addess list.. it doesnt help... due to work, my phone book is now at 500+, and that was after cutting it down due to the financial crises...
in all likelyhood i will go back to the iphone depending on what the next update is in July.. then in august will truely decide....
I to went from the HD to the iphone. I do miss the big screen and badass resolution but after a few weeks and jail breaking i dont even think about the hd or windows mobile for that matter.
Im currently looking to move from my Nokia E90 to The HD. I have never used a HD before so i cannot comment on it, but the Symbian email system is awful which is one of the reasons that im looking to move away from Symbian.
I have looked at the 5800 but it will be a "downgrade" from my E90. Also the N97 does look good but it only has 3 rows with the numbers intergrated into the top "qwerty" row.

hi all, im relativly new to all this having had an n95 for the last year or so.
I have the choice of the samsung omnia white 8gb or the htc touch hd. With the omnia ill be on a 12 month contract, with the hd an 18.
Anywya, its driving me insane trying to decide, so id appreciate any advice you could offer.
the way im looking at it at th emoment, i like the fact that the omnia has a flash, built in memory and seems to be faster (reading on here there seems to be a driver issue with the hd).
The worrys i have about the hd are the driver situation(reading on here people seem to have delay issues with tomtom and i use gps quite alot, and weather without the device will be powerfull enough to run heavier apps and the lack of a flash and inbuilt memory.
However, what i love about the hd are the community you guys have. Looking at the forum (i may be totally wrong) but itlooks like you guys are not far away from getting android working on it, which would be cool as. Also, i like the way you can use the features from the other phones such as touchwiz and the xperia squares thingy.
Anywya, i dont know much atall having used symbian for the last 6 years or so , so please give me your honest advice.

Only you know what you are looking for in a phone. Look at both specs, read up on both of them and evaluate which one is best for you.
Both have pros & cons, but you are right, xda developers is an awesome community to be part of and the tweaking & roms available are of great use!!

But then if i go for the omnia, its only 12 months i have to stay and i get the flash camera.
The omnia techinically looks just as powerfull as the hd touch, but with a lesser community of devs.

Camera on the Omnia is superior to the HD's, but I don't really use the camera function as I have a 10MP camera anyhow. I stated before, it all depends on your usage. If your looking for an Android phone, there is other options out there as Android on the HD appears to still be a long way off!

What you could do, which is a bit risky, is trial them both, i.e. get the HD and try it out for a couple days then return it saying you aren't happy, then get the Omnia and do the same thing. If you prefer the Omnia, just keep it etc
I had an Omnia for a few days and returned it as soon as possible for a Touch Pro (now have HD).
Omnia was rubbish, screen is poor, especially in sun light. The Op/sys was extremely unreliable - they've probably fixed this by now. There is no stylus except on a string and the interface is just a simple overlay on top of windows (bit like TF3D) so you need a stylus. Sound was excellent, camera was OK but I'm not a big photo maker with PDA.
The sensitivity of the Omnia acceleration detector is either too sensitive or not enough, I was not able to get it right. The touch screen sensitivity is poor - it needs a hard tap to make things happen.
What else? memory was not so big as on HD, screen resolution is not as good as HD, HD is just way way better.
BUT, it's a personal choice. However, I would highly recommend waiting for the new Omnia now and not buying the old one.

I got the touch HD , as I fell in love with the Orginal Touch .. I use PC's alott and starsted getting thumb strain with Nokia phone .. so went to the Touch .. loved this .. then went to the HD ... bigger screen etc.. I love it .. what It cant do .. is not worth it ..
i had the same dilema myself and i ended with the HD
if you want a brilliant display, cool factor and xda community go with the HD
if you want a decent camera, snappy interface, huge memory and avi movies with no conversion go with omnia
all other things are more or less the same and more or less acceptable

I got the HD, my wife the omnia.
The HD has a much, much!, better screen. I don't see much difference between the camera's (except for the flash I suppose, but I don't think she ever used it).
As for GPS:
We tried it, driving with both telephones running Garmin software.
I didn't see any difference, the voice directions came mostly simultanious or at most within tenth of seconds from each other and to be honest, I have no idea if the omnia or the HD was the echo
No way I would ever want to swap my HD for her omnia

I don't use videos much but I do use the youtube application and it's fine, I never get a stutter.
It probably depends on the coding/format being used.

Agreed, don't use videos, but I do find it annoying that when playing music you get an occasional stutter/blip with no apparent fix yet!!

As to data charges for YouTube, I use this over wifi and not GPRS so I use it for free!
I get no noticeable GPS lag in either TomTom or Google Maps.
I currently have a touch HD/Blackstone and I love it to bits, but the prospect of having a capacitive multitouch screen and much faster responses when navigating round the phone/opening/running apps etc is starting to tempt me very strongly to the HD2/Leo.
Have any of you Leo owners upgraded from the Blackstone? If so, please can you let me know your thoughts on whether it was a good move, what the pros & cons are etc, and whether the new phone really is super fast and slick like the reviews I've read say it is.
If I get one I'd probably want to be running SPB shell on it, which from looking through here I assume it works, but will most apps for the blackstone also work on the Leo?
I know there's no stylus with the Leo for instance, but for fiddly stuff does the screen accept the use of a fingernail for 'precision' (ish!) stuff like checkboxes & small menus, or does it have to be skin contact or a real capacitive stylus etc?
Regardless of whether you upgraded from a Blackstone, are you very pleased with the way the phone works in terms of performance and 'slickness'?
Last questions are - what's the video performance like on the Leo, ie does it have all the problems the HD has in terms of poor out of the box performance with video playback?
And is the bluetooth stuff still hardcoded for the HTC music player (like the blackstone), or would I be able to properly use my sony bluetooth headset to control the likes of coreplayer?
Sorry for all the questions - I really want to upgrade to the Leo, but it will cost me a lot and I don't want to make a mistake.

After having the Touch HD for 2 month I really loved it. Everything was running as I wanted it to be ... But then HTC announced the HD2 and I decided to switch to it after watching lots of videos in youtube an other sites. I would do it again ...
I don't have any problems using the OS without a stylus. In fact I wasn't using the stylus or my fingernails on my Touch HD either. I only needed to adapt to the higher screen responsiveness, but that was it.
HD2 pros compared to the Touch HD:
+ MUCH higher build quality. The Touch HD always felt somehow cheap, except it actually wasn't ...
+ Everything is just faster. I wasn't too thrilled with TouchFLO 3D on the Touch HD, as it slowed down the device too much. No problems on the HD2, although the new version of TouchFLO 3D (Sense ...) grew in so many aspects and is now pretty well integrated into the OS.
+ The bigger screen. Didn't thing its a big deal, but the screen-difference between the two devices is astonishing. Its much more fun to use multimediacontent on the HD2.
+ Pinch to Zoom.
I had a HD for nearly a year now and loved it - yes, TF3D ran slowly but it also was more "form than function" and I stopped using it in favour of simple SPB Diary with multiple tabs.
Now having a HD2 for over a month I do love the high speed and slick operation and I even stick with TF3D (or HTC Sense, whatever it's called).
But, there are apps from HD that don't run well on the screen as they expect the precision of a stylus. One example is SPB Finance that I used to record all my expenditures on an almost daily business. This just does not work with a big fat finger !
But, but others work great - CoPilot works really nicely. I tried Route66 on the HD2 as this was a fully legal working purchase on the HD but on the new HD2 it's not good. Nice surprise is the new CoPilot works really well and super fast. Even indoors near a window I can get enough satellites for a 3D fix and moving next to the window gets 7 or 8 sats. HD never achieved that.
My build quality on the HD was fine. On the HD2 you get a real solid feel from the metal battery cover where you naturally hold the device.
HD2 is super quick but the capacitive screen is a weakness. However, this is because most applications have not yet caught up. Many exist that are great with fingers like Resco explorer but others expect a stylus and are hard to use.
As a year long HD user I doubt very much that I won't move back after having got the HD2. My old HD is sitting in a box and I have not been tempted to get it out !

Can you clarify a couple of things I'm still not sure about though?
Dave - you said you can't use certain apps from the HD because of the capacitive screen as you don't have a stylus with it (and can't use a normal one I believe), but is it possible to use these apps with a finger nail if you really need to?
I know it might be awkward or not very practical, but I want to know whether it's actually possible at all, ie if the screen will physically work like that, or if it's literally impossible to do?
Secondly (don't get me wrong here) whilst I don't want an iphone, is the responsiveness of the HD2 screen the same kind of thing? Local shops here don't have one I can try so I have to go by what others tell me, and I'd like it to work as smooth as the iphone screen, ie no actual pressure etc.
I know it's capacitive so it should be like that but I don't know if there are differences aside from that to how the screen responds. Hope that makes sense!
Last question - I believe the screen is glass on it? Is it toughened in any way? Presume the fact that it's glass will mean that it's much harder to scratch than the HD screen and also means a clearer, brighter display by not having a resistive layer?

I upgraded from the Blackstone and for me, it was definitely worth it.
First thing you notice is the amazing speed if the device. I just saw that I had TomTom (among a couple of other programs) running in the background for several days and I didn't even notice it.
The HD2 is really insanely fast. I sometimes take my old Blackstone in order to try new WM builds, but its slowness makes me sick after some minutes of using it.
Next big thing, for me, is the camera. The light sensitivity has been greatly improved and the flash works stunningly good for an LED flash.
It takes really great pictures for a smartphone, much much better than the HD, finally I have a phone that lets me capture the important moments
(btw. the 'red tint bug' is present but not noticeable on most pictures)
Third thing is the screen. It''s capacitive, that means you can NOT use your fingernail, and no stylus. But I really like the sensitivity, it's much more comfortable to use. And it feels a lot better, it's not the 'cheap' feel of the resistive panel's plastic layers anymore.
And this brings me to the fourth and last point: Build quality. I've never ever seen such a high build quality and high quality materials on a phone. It looks and feels just amazing, even the iPhone feels like a cheap toy in comparison.
Video playback is of course a lot better and it plays high quality video without stuttering.
Well actualy you can use stylus without problems, you just have to buy a special one (whitch buy the way also works on the iPhone)

Like they other says there are applications who can be a bit of a hassel with using with the finger...
But I suspect you would love it... I could newer go back to my HD after being used to the buitiful racer the HD2 is, and i absolutely love the screen to.

I've spent 1 week with the HD2 after a year on the HD. Mobile Shell 3.5 on both.
The main difference is speed. HD2 is soooo much faster. Didn't notice the HD was particularly slow whilst I was using it, but going back to it now is PAINFUL.
I struggled a bit initially with the capacitive screen, found it a bit hit and miss. In particular I found the HTC keyboard a nightmare, way too sensitive. Installing the .cab that decreases screen sensitivity has improved things greatly, and installing Spb Keyboard has also helped. It's improving with practice, there are still times when I do something and it doesn't register, but overall I'm starting to like it. There's a definite knack to it: much lighter touch, smoother motions. So there's a learning curve here + a need to tweak. And I'm sure the experience will continue to improve as third party software is adapted for it.
Mobile Shell has a few minor compatability issues but nothing to worry about (screen brightness control doesn't work, voicemail indicator widget doesn't work, a few other minor things). Spb are generally good at updating for significant new hardware releases, same thing happened with the HD when it was first released and they fixed everything quickly. I tried the Sense interface for a day or two to see if I could get used to it, it IS very pretty. But went back to Mobile Shell, I find it much more functional.
The HD2 build quality is excellent vs good for HD. And the additional screen size is a significant plus too. I was initially worried it would be a step too far in terms of the overall size of the device, but no. As soon as I laid eyes on the actual device + picked it up I knew it wouldn't be a problem.
Browsing in Opera is fantastic. Fast and the big screen helps. Still not comparable to a desktop browsing experience but very usable and way better than the HD due to the speed.
Overall it's a big step forward from the HD and highly recommended. Like I said, I find going back to the HD to dig out a few files I need to be surprisingly painful...

I tested the HD2 besides both, an 3G and 3GS, and really couldn't find any real difference in the screens responsiveness. You don't have to do any pressure on the HD2's screen ... I have to say, that I had a problem with the high sensitivity at first, but when playing around with an Nokia N900 last week, I noticed how fast I adapted to the capacitive screen of the HD2. The N900's screen was a pain in the ass (although its actually quite good for a resistive screen), because slight fingerswipes and tips didn't to anything ...
When browsing the forums you will notice, that most ppl here have/had a problem with the keyboard of the HD2. Besides the bugreporting here (I don't have any of these problems), I imagine that most of the problems with the keyboard just come from the unfamiliar sensitivity. By lifting the fingers a little higher when typing, I managed to type pretty accurate.
I don't have a Touch HD to compare side by side, but had the possibility to compare the HD2 to an iPhone 3G ... the 3G was very slow compared to the HD2 ... So wouldn't really go back to a last-gen phone ...
Had a Touch HD for a year until i bought my HD2 last month.
I Had Dutty's Leo rom running since he started releasing those, so I felt completely at home with my HD2 when i had it in my hand. (For those not knowing : Leo rom for Touch HD is just that. Winmo 6.5 running HTC Sense, just like the HD2)
A few things felt wonderfully different tho :
Screen is beautifull. The glas type used is almost impossible to scratch. I have my phone in my pocket unprotected. Even accedently slipped my keys in with it a few times. Not a mark on it! What is this screen made of ? Diamond ??
Speed. Wow! This phone is fast. I ran the weather demo simultaniously, side by side with the Touch HD. And the difference makes the Touch HD look like a joke. (it's not, but compared, its sloooow)
Pinch zoom. OMG now i know why Iphone has been the king of mobile browsing. HAS been! HD2 is now the new king! Opera + capacitive screen with multi touch AND a 1 ghz processor ? It is a match made in heaven. Mobile browsing is EASY and fun now. Thank god i have an internet sub on my simcard...
Camera. Remember how a big hazzel it was to take a pic with Touch HD ? I mean, the moment is GONE, before the camera is ready to take the picture!
With HD2 and a shortcut on the Sense start screen , it takes around 1 second(!!) from press on camera icon till your ready to take the picture!. The flash LED (Which can blind a man btw) makes it possible to shoot in the dark, FINALLY!
Well those things was EXACTLY why I upgraded, and I have not been dissapointed.
Some had a huge problem with the sensitive screen. Not me, I adapted quickly, and the keyboard I was used to from leo rom on the Touch HD, so i guess it's a matter of taste, or fat fingers .

There are a LOT of the tweaks and programs for Dutty's leo rom that works great with the HD2, like BG4all etc.

yep, fortgot to mention the LEDs. I love them. Not to take pictures, but for everydays things. Really missed a LED on the Touch HD.
I got my HD2 a week ago, and I'm loving it, other than the rather short battery life (may be a temporary issue, some people do not have this issue).
It's definitely faster than the HD. Going through the Windows folder in File Explorer takes 2 seconds, rather than 6-8 seconds on the HD. Going through tabs in TouchFlo 3D (Sense) is fast, and tab contents are displayed lightning fast.
TomTom works great on the HD2, haven't tried CoPilot because they do not have maps that I could purchase for my region yet (which is funny, since I can download the map while trialling the software). TomTom is rather smooth on the HD2, the position cursor does not jerk forward when moving. With valid QuickGPS data, getting a GPS fix is faster than on the HD.
The speaker is a little worse than the HD in my opinion, although it's somewhat louder than the HD.
Moving from Resistive (HD) to the Capacitive screen in the HD2 may take some time to get used to it. Drawing/scribbling notes can be hard, so is selecting the directory/folder you want to go to in File Explorer. Maybe it's me, I have large fingers.
Reception compared to the HD, Nokia N82, N95 8GB.
The 3G network I'm on is rather bad in my room.
Nokia N82 and N95 8GB - 4 of 7 bars (estimated equivalent on the HD2 would be 3 of 4 bars)
HTC Touch HD - 1 of 4 bars
HTC Touch HD2 - 3 of 4 bars, sometimes full signal.
The signal bars on the HD2 tend to fluctuate at times, while holding the phone in landscape mode and browsing the internet, the signal may drop to no bars, disconnect from the network, then come back on with 1 or 2 bars.
Camera is great. Autofocus seems to be 'continuous', focusing when the camera is moved or after a few seconds. Shutter lag is much shorter than on the HD, but taking moving subjects may still result in a blurr (cranking up the ISO setting doesn't help much). Sharper than on the HD, and the automatic white balance is definitely better than on the HD under certain lighting conditions. LED Flash works OK for objects further than 30cm most of the time, using it for close ups may sometimes result in a bright, white mess.
I'm using the 1.43 ROM, so some of these issues may be fixed in the updated ROM. There are some issues in TouchFlo/Sense, but they are easily corrected by taking a trip down the Tips & Tricks Post in the Leo Forum.

I'd used Blackstone for some monthes, and overall I was satisfied. (I'd used Xanny Grid Leo rom)
I've a Leo for a week, and now I'm not simply satisfied but I'm happy with it. The speed, the huge screen and the build quality are fantastic. It's very rear, when I have to fight with small old-fashioned windows controls, but with some patience and practice it is also manageable. Nail-touching definitely doesn't work. Althogh, you can buy capacitive-compatible stylus on ebay.
Only disadvantage for me: fring doesn't work, but I hope it will be fixed soon. Temporarily I use Nimbuzz for chatting.
Overall I can highly recommend the upgrade. If you can do, DO IT!

I want one for sure now. The only thing is the cost - I can't renew my contract and there are very few Leos on Ebay and around £500, but only maybe £250 sale proceeds from my HD, so it's quite a hit to take.
If I can get a few quid together to help ease the difference then I'll definitely get one.

Same here, had the HD for about a year and liked it in many respects, the HD2 is a much nicer experience though and if you can afford it at some point I highly recommend to get it.
Well I've made my mind up to get one for sure. The only question really is when.
I'll have to buy an unlocked one on Ebay I think and there are very few on there at the moment because the phone is so new. This is obviously therefore keeping the prices really high.
I'm dying to say 'sod it' and get the credit card out but I know I ought to wait a month or two to see if they get a bit cheaper once more are being sold.
I've read reviews on it and most things I see say that this is basically the best piece of hardware on the market in terms of phones, but that it's "let down/ruined" etc by having winmo on it. I like winmo and have used it for years, so for me, that's a plus!

Yep. Those reviews are nonsense.
Powerful hardware like this needs a powerful OS, and WinMo really is by far the most powerful OS you can get.
It doesn't ruin anything. It's the perfect OS for a phone like this.
WinMo bashing is a current trend that you can't do anything against when sites like Gizmodo or Engadget spread the FUD. It's really sad.
I wouldn't want any other OS on the HD2.

Last phones I've had have been Touch HD, Omnia, XDA Orbit etc - loved them all.

Congrats to get this lovely phone. I'd wager you will like it .
I really wanted to go for an Android device, but since none of them is GSM and has a screen this big, I'm going for the HD2.
Just a few questions:
1. Is the glass screen prone to cracking? Even on gentle drops?
2. How oversensitive is the touchscreen? Can I type as fast as I do on my Nokia E90?
3. Does it have a tendency to corrupt 16GB microSD cards? I've seen some threads around it.
4. How stable is it for daily life usage?
5. Does it work with a bluetooth keyboard?
6. Can you hook up a PS3 bluetooth controller and play FPSce on it?
Edit, some more questions:
7. Does it have audio/video lag while playing reasonable quality videos? REALLY worried about this one...
8. How's the camera and video recording?

1. There have been different reports. Some say they've broken theirs on gentle drops, others have had some big drops with no damage. I find the HD2 to be a good solid build. Best advice is get a good case and be careful.
2. There are tweaks if you find the screen to be oversensitive and a variety of good keyboard solutions and other suggestions right in these forums. I was using a hardware keyboard on my previous device so it took me a little time to adjust. Now, I'm quite happy with my typing speed even with the stock keyboard.
3. I formatted a 16mb card and inserted it into my HD2 on day one. I have absolutely no problems to report.
4. My HD2 is very stable. I rarely have to do a soft reset even with heavy use. Again, there are utilities like CleanRam that help keep you stable without soft resetting.
5. Yes, but check the accessories threads, I don't which ones work best.
6. I'll leave that one for someone else as I'm not much of a gamer.
hd2 is a very good hardware(big screen, cute looking etc) but has WM OS (worst on the planet). in my opinion go to android phone. HTC EVO4g or Desire dunno but i can say only that the WM sux badly.
and yes its stable if u dont do anything except carrying the phone in pocket and just talk a bit....otherwise will wake up in a nightmare !

1. No more than any other screen imo, mine's ben dropped a couple of times onto hard surfaces and it's absolutely fine
2. Can't compare it to the Nokia, but certain aspects are more sensitive than the iphone, but you get used to it after about 30s. You can always change the sensitivity if you're daring enough to tweak the registry
3. I've got a 16GB MicroSD card and touchwood it's been fine. I've got a San Disk one, so maybe if you buy cheaper alternatives it won't like them?
4. It will crash on you/freeze on you fairly regularly, which can be a little frustrating at times.
5 Don't know
6. Don't know, doubt it.
For reason 4, and for the lack of apps I have been contemplating swapping my HD2. It's a shame really, as it's almost worth keeping for the home screen alone. It still amazes me when I switch the phone on and there's this gorgeous home screen with weather animation. I don't think there's a phone that comes close (maybe the EVO 4 but that's not available in the UK). The desire has the same idea, but imo doesn't pull it off anywhere near as well.
My choices at the moment are, stick with the HD2 and put up with the frustrations of it crashing, and generally not being as 'polished' as other phones (eg iphone, desire), get the HTC desire and try not to think about the home screen of the HD2, wait to see what the iphone 4G is going to be like, which is likely to be announced in 3 days time (7th June).
If you want something that works straight out of the box and has plenty of apps, consider the iphone or HTC Desire (although this is android and might not support GSM, which I didn't realise). IF you want a phone that works well with a few tweaks, and has a home screen to die for and you can live without apps (there are some, but really not that great compared to the other markets) then get the HD2. Apparantly though the Desire has a much more vibrant screen which makes photos etc much better than the HD2, and if that's true it must look great as I think the screen on the HD2 is amazing, and much better than the iphone 3G(s). I'm sure the screen on the iphone 4G will be pretty impressive though

a typical answer of a WM hater. Sorry i do not agree
the stock roms are not the best, but when you use one of the cooked roms, there are many around, the phone is a pleasure to use, stable and does what it should do. even under heavy usage. A lot of people here on the forum are heavy users and if it was as bad as you describe they would not stay on WM.

I've dropped mine 3 times, twice off the end of the bed onto hardwood floor and once from chest hight onto a shop floor. No dents, no marks, no cracks. But of course with it having such a large glass screen you'd do well to try your best not to drop it.

Using something like SlideIT or Swype I dare say you could type a lot faster, and there are lots of tweaks to change the sensitivity of the screen to suit your needs.

I've pulled mine in and out numerous times and it's been fine and dandy. If you buy a cheap non branded card you might be looking for trouble, I'm not too sure on it though.

I use my Mini Dinovo from time to time so that's a big ten-four.

1 - Ive dropped mine, only a small drop though but its fine, I also managed to smash it into a fridge screen first and it didnt break, i was very lucky though! I dont advise smashing your phone against a fridge.
2 -The screen is very sensitive but bsb tweaks will solve that problem straight away....
3 - I dont use a 16gb card but the number of threads compared to the amount of people that must use these cards suggests its not a big issue....
4 - I've found it too be pretty damn stable, few hiccups here and there....
5 - Yes
6 - Yes (just dont ask me how) it can be done though.....

I totally disagree with this. I'm using the phone let's say on nearly heavy usage and using for a week and never had to do a softreset. I'm using many apps and games and no problem with them, just remember to use task manager when finishing with apps.
Many know the fact that for example on your pc by using clean windows your pc is fast and stable, but after installing third party apps it becomes messy. so try to use good apps and your safe from freezing.
Ps. I'm previous user of android and I had many force closes with apps.

For keypad/typing sensitvity use tweak #91 from the hints and tips and change the number to what suits you best (tiral and error)

For overall sensitivity use BSB tweaks.
One of the best tweaks for me was #35 from the link above regarding the clickable links in opera without having to zoom in. I actually changed the value to 2 though

You must be one of the lucky ones. I have to use soft reset at least once/week, and I have very few apps/games on my phone, and the ones I do have are very reputable. I even had problems before I installed these. I have done a few tweaks that have stabilised it quite a bit, but it's still not great.
Initially after coming from Android, I found this phone limiting in terms of apps. Also the Google environment is pretty slick.
However, there is nothing that I've wanted to do with this phone that I haven't been able to do: streaming music, gtalk, facebook integration, the list is long.
Some apps are not quite as elegant, but overall I've been pleased with this phone. Sometimes it needs a reset to get back up to speed, but so did my android device. This phone boots so fast, its not an issue for me.
The battery life is awesome. Lasts longer than my Magic did. Everything is so fast with the 1ghz processor. All I have to do is play around with my old phone for a bit to appreciate just how much faster everything is.
One of the pleasant surprises I've had is just how seamlessly it works with my Windows 7 PC. It's like they were made for each other. I forgot about that with Android. The Sense overlay is nice, and once you get to playing with other ROMs, it's hard to get bored.
Now that the EVO is out and the reviews, I'm still happy I bit the bullet with the HD2 and don't feel the need to trade it.
P.S. This thing has mobile hotspot too, and it works great!
first let me start by saying durability is no problem. the guys at tmobile hooked me up with a gel skin included so that soaks up a lot of jarring and dropping. second i have literally taken knives razors and screwdrivers to my screen trying to scratch it and the closest i get is friction smudging that justwipes away. like i said durability no issue. I've had my hd2 since march and I'm in love. it made me drop Verizon. some hd2 downfalls? its a big smudge magnet carry some windex and a rag lol or spend at bucks on smudge covers. i think the coolest feature of hd2 is the auto light detection when i step outside my phone auto adjusts so i can see

Windows Mobile is a lot more homely device for me and I love experimenting with the amazing hardware the HD2 would provide...

Seems pretty study, have dropped mine a couple of times on a hard floor with no problem (only had it a week as well )

Stock ROM might be awful, if you are used to a resistive screen you may get a shock initially but you soon get used to it, get the screen sensitivity fix and the zoomer app and all your troubles will dissipate.

Haven t got one but I haven't seen much about this, I cannot see why it would.

Stick to the more popular ROMS and you will have very few problems, I found the stock very stable, perfectly so to be honest but I wanted more icandy, cookie tab for instance.

aha, there has been a lot of talk about this. I came form a Touch HD and the video performace was dreadful. I mainly play hdtv rips of around 700 meg and dvd rips of the same size, none of these played well with my touch Hd but theu play beautifully with my HD2. I am using coreplayer for most video and TCPMP for my Ac3 encoded stuff (if direct drawer doesnt work try GDI with full zoom enabled, leave everything else be, works a treat.

Slow, all phones are slow at web browsing, we are a long way from getting decent web performance on a phone, that being said with the huge screen it is much better than just about any other phone I have tried.

Surprisingly good I think, then again I am again comparing this to my Touch HD which wasn't great. The Flash is a little harsh at times but daylight pic and vids are really pretty decent for a sub 720p camera.
It should be noted though that this is a tweakers phone, you may find yourself twiddling and tweaking for a long while before you have it how you want it. For me this is exactly what I want from a gadget though, a reason why I would touch a symbian or Iphone with me cats knob.

2. You should try SlideIT and the new Resco beta 6 keyboard; they both work great.
4. Nothing wrong with the stock ROM I use (1.66), but no annoying add ons by my phone company, just a plain 1.66 ROM.
