the Dream is available in South Africa on a really cheap mobile contract.
Do you guys that already have the Dream recommend that I go for it (since it will be really cheap), or rather form out (lots) more for the Hero?
I am still happy with my dream, but it is showing its age a bit.
If you can afford it I would go for one of the newer models, but if its really cheap and does everything you want, you can get a lot worse than the dream.
But as I say it is showing its age, so its not cutting edge.
Still cant beat the keyboard on it though

I had left the G1 in favor for the Cliq because of the better hardware, but motorola is STILL running the Cliq with 1.5. So, when Cyanogen released 2.1 I put away my Cliq and brought out the G1 and with the mods, its running better than the Cliq. I prefer phones with a keyboard, the HERO does not have one. But it does have the Sense UI. But you can put a Sense UI rom on the G1 and have both, then OC the processor and it may be better than the Hero . Also, new phones come out all the time, dunno whats available in SA currently, but try and see whats coming out in the future and maybe wait. the G1 may be inexpensive but if it locks you into a 2 year contract, you'll be stuck with it and sorry if something better comes out in 3 months. I'd get one off of Craig's list (if available there) or Ebay. U can find them for like 50$US now and NOT lock yourself into a contract.
htcsensecrippleui is a waste of energy.
The SINGLE advantage of the hero vs dream is that it has more RAM. The second difference is that it also has more nand, but this is not particularly important since we are still nowhere near using up the entire nand on DREAM for the system, and the sdcard can take up whatever you can throw at it.
The SERIOUS DISADVANTAGE of the hero is that it doesn't have a KEYBOARD.
The rest is pretty much the same.
DREAM is still an excellent device. The fact that it isn't the newest/biggest/fastest thing out there does NOT suddenly make it junk. Dream is able to run Android 2.1 with excellent performance.

I agree with lbcoder 100%
I have had the G1/Dream since T-Mobile launched it in Oct 2008 and it has provided me with a sturdy platform for Android, a solid QWERTY keyboard, rugged design to take every day abuse, and an overall great experience. Sure, the device is considered "outdated" and sure I would love to get the latest Android device like an Evo or an Incredible, but I have definitely gotten my money's worth out of the G1 and it continues to be a great device that I rely on.
I will take my G1 over most Android phones any day!
dream
if you like having a full keyboard, touch screen and scroll bar all in one then this is your phone. it might be a bit slower on memory compared to the 1gz phones and 8.0 mpzl cameras now but you can still root!
I have a Dream from MTN and its R133 per month which is nothing compared to the hero contracts ive seen. to me, if you love hacks and will be going the root route (LOL), and are a more experienced user, get the Dream. the Keyboard for me kills the hero hands down. I have 3 friends with Heros and i have to say that typing with them is crap.
or get the Moto Droid from an importer
EDIT: checkout leaf's site... the Desire is coming to SA. but can you imagine the cost

I was looking at the MTN contract (R133/month = $20 on average, so pretty cheap). I read that the Dream doesn't support multi-touch unless one upgrades to Android 2.0. Is this the case?
Another thing I wanted to check is whether the Dream can run divX video.
This is going to be my personal phone (office is providing another phone for work), and I would like a device that can play all my movie / series...

Nobody's going to be putting 2.0 on dream. That was a very short lived version of android which was really only applicable to a single device sold by motorola. One could almost consider 2.0 to be DOA. 2.1 is the current thing, but is about to be replaced (within a few days hopefully) by 2.2.

OK... any version beyond > 2.1
Will the Dream support multi-touch once a newer OS is installed?
And does anyone use their Dream for viewing DivX/XviD media?

Dream *does* multitouch.
It isn't particularly useful though.
divx and xvid are just de/encoders of H.263. As long as the video you want to watch is packaged in a recognized container, and the fourcc is set to h263 (note: both divx and xvid will set the fourcc to divx or xvid, which is invalid), the audio is encoded in something compatible, and the bitrate/resolution is within the decoder chip's bounds, then it'll work just fine.
If my G1 ever tried to leave me, I'd throw myself off a building.

Hi,
im in need of a new smartphone, and i have been thinking of buying the Hero since it costs somewhat cheap and almost all the reviews said that its a really good phone, moreover, it looks good.
but some say that its a bit old, and that new phones are really close to get released so i better wait a bit more and get the new ones.
is it a bad/late time to buy a Hero? what do u think of the phone in general? are there enough apps (compared to the iphone)?
or should i want more time and get the new ones? if yes, then is tehre an idea of how much they gonna cost? cuz im not willing to spend much on a phone.
or should i forget all this and just get an IPhone 3G (not the 3gs cuz it costs a lot)?!?!
any help would be very appreciated.
Thanks.
about the iphone... that really is up to u and your personal comfort in a little tinkering with the OS. If you are scared and want things set for u and comfined to what they think it good for u.. then iphone is a good device.
I love my hero and it is great! The Android OS is GREAT and lets the owner more control of what he wants his phone to do.
Yes, it is old tech, but it can handles itself very well. It's OS is scheduled to be upgraded from 1.5 to 2.1 in Q2 (maybe at end of March). This new OS will refresh its abililties.
If you can wait a few months for a new phone...
I would! New phones are scheduled to drop, and what carrier you use will depend on which phone u can get. My guess on the new prices will be $180 -$250. But on the flip side, currently the Hero is $80 with new 2 yr contract.
Again, I love my hero/android...best phone I have ever owned. Most users should be fine with the Hero's abilities.
but I will be looking to upgrade in fall, to new android phone, because I love tech toys.
Hoped i helped.. a little
I got my Hero about 3 weeks ago. Cost me £10 on a 2 year contract with Orange UK.
I considered waiting for the new phones to drop, but after reading about all the problems the Nexus One seems to be having, I decided that a more "mature" handset would be best. Also, any new phone would cost considerably more at launch. If I decide to upgrade the handset in 12 months (although I don't think I will), I can just buy a new one knowing that I haven't spent much on the Hero.
As for the Hero itself I love it! Sure, it could be a little faster or have more RAM, but I'd say that about whatever device I had. I can honestly say that the Hero has changed the way I do many things... from emails, Facebook & Twitter to ebook reading & geo-logging. The Android Market is great, with many great free apps (e.g. Astrid, Listen, etc)
Obviously the choice is yours, but for cost & functionality, I'd recommend the Hero to anyone!
Cheers.
htc hero
I got my HTC Hero yesterday on contract with three uk for £28 per month for 750 mins, unlimited text and internet .... the phone is superb .. it is very easy to set up .. emails come straight to your phone (I was told that 3 email push was available but its not as its not supported but the inbuilt email client is superb) the market place has loads of stuff and the phone is fast and doesnt lag even though ive loads on the screens ....
i looked at the iphone also but pound for pound the hero is best for money and to be honest you will get most apps on the hero ..... and good thing is 90% are free unlike iphone
I had debated to wait for the next htc that 3 uk are getting however the chaps told me its like a brick and thats one thing the hero isnt
highly recomend it !!!
The Hero has a great amount of RAM compared to other android smartphones, I sold my iPhone, and purchased a used (practically new) hero from two chinese foreign exchange students for only $250!
Honestly, with MrBang's proformance ROM, I am a witness to speeds which I thought were't possible on anything but a Nexus One. My phone is snappy and it's speed is comparable to that of an iPhone 3GS.
Not to mention how easy it is to overclock it to 528Mhz (iPhone 3GS runs at 600Mhz)
Just download the widget from the market!
I hope that whatever decision you make, you're happy with what you choose
If you want a phone that will be taken care of, updated timely and frequently, and so forth, get a Nexus One.
If you want a phone that has already been all but abandoned by HTC, with bugs still looming from when it was released, then get a Hero.
It's a nice phone and I have one myself, but really, I think the best phone right now is the Nexus One, since it is supported directly by Google, as opposed to just another phone that HTC is tweaking slightly and throwing down the assembly line.

Iphone 3GS runs at 800mhz AND it's using a far more powerful cpu/gpu, not sure what you're trying to compare.
Hero is kinda outdated, I'd wait for the Legend.
Haha, funny you mention it cause Legend will also be rather outdated hardware wise. Rather go for the Desire.
That's what I'm trying to say. HTC is throwing slightly different hardware into slightly different cases and selling it. They don't appear to be trying to innovate at all. Both of these claims are supported by the fact that their LATEST AND GREATEST is just a Hero redux.
Honestly, the Android phone to have right now is the Nexus One/Desire. Even though the N1 is manufactured by HTC, it is supported by Google. That means it will likely be the first device to get every upgrade until Google decides otherwise. It also has significantly better hardware than the HTC branded LATEST AND GREATEST (i.e. HTC Legend).
I would not go the Hero route at all if I was buying now.
I have a Hero and HTC are not doing the current users (mugs) any favours by cynically stalling the 2.1 roll out.
Nexus One is the best choice for a new Androider. For me though, I will avoid HTC where possible as a result of this Hero 2.1 debacle. I have owned HTC mobiles for many years but this current level of customer contempt is the Kaiser 3D qualcomm issue all over again

Errhhh - the latest and greatest HTC branded Android phone is the Desire, which is essentially the same as the N1.
Whilst Hero was HTC's top of the range Android phone when it was released, the Legend never will be.

I love this phone regardless of how old it is. I just got myself a new contract with T-mobile on one of these. Brilliant.

You're right. I edited my post but forgot to get everything. I still think it is safe to assume that the N1 will still be updated more frequently (depending on how the hierarchy is setup now between Google and HTC for the N1).
I have my HTC Hero since 1 week and a half ago. I must say that it hasn't dissappointed me even though i expected A LOT from it. I came from an HTC Touch and the change is incredible. I bought it "2d hand", i say it between quotes because the seller had open it just to see how it was. I spent 130€ + 11€ for network unlocking. The advantage? I'm not tied to any company. I don't have the last technology, neither the best phone, but i'm pretty happy with what I have. The relation between the money I spent, and the company freedom, doesn't have price
But I have to say aswell, that if you have money for a Nexus One, go for it. If not, i highly recommend you the Hero.
I suggest going with either Nexus 1, or any of the new HTC phones coming out excluding Legend. I'm not dissing HTC or anything, but their delayed response to any updates on the HTC Hero, just...Dissapoints me. If you can't afford the newer models, then HTC Hero is still a good choice, all because of XDA you can still test out Android 2.1.
We need to know your budget really before saying "yes you should buy" or "no you shoudn't", if you could pick up a cheap hero, and don't mind getting your hands a little dirty, then by all means go for it and put a hacked 2.1 ROM on, or wait for the HTC release.
Failing that, and if you are a little more flush, then get an N1.
SO.. as the title says... is the Hero worth buying now?
Also, I`ve read here about some problems with the touch screen that suddenly appear... is that a general issue or just some isolated incidents?
The phone is over a year old now, the CPU is a generation older than the other Android devices with the 1GHz Snapdragon processor. I'm sure the phone manufacturers are preparing the next generation devices for later in the year - making those phones obsolete.
If you're after a cheap device then you should be able to get a Hero second hand for a decent price. If you're willing to root and try new ROMs then there is still a decent community for the Hero - otherwise you'll be stuck on Android 2.1 if you stick with the official updates. The Hero is highly unlikely to get any more updates from HTC.
If your budget allows for a newer phone, then you'd be better off getting a more powerful Android device.
Thanks, I too think that it`s a little old, but it has a fairly good price, almost the same as Wildfire here, where I live, but that qvga screen on the Wildfire is a let down for me.
Alex~ is bang on, it is cheap, and the community on here is great, so if your gona be using custom roms then go for it. But I wouldn't like to say how many devs will still bother with us after Xmas.
If you can put up ur budget, do that.

Tru, there are better phones available if buying new, but it's more than competent if second hand.
I'll be about till May 2011 with my hero anyway, as my contract expires then. And even then, the hero is popular enough to merit continued support i reckin.
Hi I just bought one off eBay about a month old for £150 took a bit time to root and get used to Android, but worth it and its ok for price with lots of features. Although I think I now should have gone for HTC Legend?

Not to mention that there is no other Android phone with as cool appearance as that of a black Hero (the european version, not the US Sprint's ugly cousin). I held the Desire in my hands and played with it a bit, but although it was blazingly fast, it didn't strike me as something I'd want.
What I will want next year is a Hero-shaped phone with modern hardware.
Would not recommend ebay.
Three are selling reconditioned £159.99 with £10 credit and can be unlocked from ebay for £6.50. Also £12 cashback if you go through Quidco.
Hope this helps.
Well the community for it is quite huge. Ofc it will slim when others move to newer phones, but I guess there are folks who got a 2 year contract (me being one of them, hehe )

I agree completely, imo the only other phone that looks as good or better than the Hero is the Legend. A Hero-shaped super phone would be amazing

they've released the htc wildfire which is very much just a repackaged hero... i have no idea why they did it. it lacks all the style and class of the hero and only has an fm radio to make up for it.
Well if you root your Hero and overclock it, it pretty much becomes a Legend. Without the better screen and slimer profile. I want the Desire but got the HTC Hero this year because it just looked awesome (unfortunately Canadian carriers screw you over with 3 year contracts instead of two ) but I do love my Hero as it is my first smart phone and I love the 'chin'.
It is a matter of preference so the choice in the end is yours, but we do have Feeyo .
The design really stands out yea. People are always like "hey, what kind of phone is that?" while my brother gets none and has a desire
I think there are too many phones who are desire-like look at first look. Hero really stands out

I get that a bit. Although the only smartphone that really has any recognition here in NZ is the iPhone. I imported my phone as we don't even have a decent range of Android phones (at reasonable prices). I mean... we JUST got the Nexus One which Google just stopped selling? lol.
But I only recently got my hero (a month ago now?) and i'm happy with my purchase. I mean... there's other purchases that could be had. I almost got a Milestone but the keyboard really put me off (played with my mates', it was a terrible keyboard.. the buttons are so stiff it isn't funny). I mean... I noticed a price drop of the Milestone shortly after I purchased my Hero but.. Eh, I can't complain. Bigger screen/higher res would've been nice though. Specs aren't really much more to write home about though.
Hero was reasonably priced, looks good, performs well enough. My only real annoyances about it are: No official Froyo, smaller screen/lower-resolution than others, can't run some newer games which i probably wouldn't play much anyway.
I'll probably upgrade next year when I have lots of money
So what do people think now? I am personally swayed to buy the Desire Z, but I would like to see what other people think.
Having watched http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly4C0TXmnlQ, I am pretty impressed by htcsense.com (for the off days that I forget my phone!). The maps app isn't really that smooth...the demo showed it being quite laggy on the Desire HD.
Build quality is great, performance seems smooth, keyboard looks fantastic (no numbers row though =[ ) and the screen looks crisp.
edit: maybe I should have also posted on the Desire HD forum! =P

i've been fed up with windows mobile for about a year now with my HTC Blackstone...it's simply too old and dated an OS. And WinPho & is simply too locked down and not as flexible as I'd like it to be (I'm so sick of those tiles!).
Android looks like the way to me...and *if* I do want to load up my phone with something bloated and pretty, then I will use the HTC Sense bundled in with that phone...which is tons better than the HTC Sense on Windows Mobile.
The Desire Z looked great to me. Perfect size, build quality is on point, gorgeous keyboard, and very fast. I hope the G2 is the same color as the Desire Z, the G2 looks a bit lighter from the renders on T-Mobile's site.
The Desire HD was a bit of a let down to me. First off, it's not HD. A 4.3 inch screen needs a better resolution than 800x480. The colors on the screen look incredibly washed out compared to the Desire Z. Also is it true that the HD only has a 1250mAh battery?!
Can't wait to get the G2. Goodbye Vibrant.

Looks like HTC have pulled that video off their Youtube account. I wonder why
I am eager to see how the MSM7230 800MHz performs compared to the 1GHz Snapdragon that sits in my Nexus currently. But I already know I will be pre-ordering the Desire Z ASAP. I have been waiting for a high-end qwerty Android phone from HTC for so long. Cant believe its finally here, and its *almost* everything I wanted..
I am a bit annoyed at HTC though, because they have a tendency to do this. The Desire HD has a great unibody construction which gives the phone that extreme high-end feel to it, while the Desire Z is left with a combination of aluminium and plastic finish. Why, I don't know. Also wish they would have put some aluminium love on the keyboard as well, but at least the keyboard looks good otherwise.
Those are probably my only concerns regarding the Desire Z (that, and the lame name). I hope the Z mechanism lasts as well though and wont get sluggish over time.
Anyway, its as close to perfect for me as any other phone has ever been so Im picking it up anyways. Just wish HTC would stop holding back when launching new phones. If the MSM7230 800MHz performs well then Im relieved, but if not then I will be mad at HTC for not going for the 1GHz version instead. The MSM7230 has the Adeno 205 GPU, but since Android doesn't support GPU acceleration I guess we wont get much joy from it.
Now Im just waiting for pre-orders here to show up!

is GPU acceleration something that modders can address? also, I'm curious what the GPU does when its not being utilized for acceleration. isn't the very definition of a GPU that its a graphics accelerator? is it that Android uses it for some things like games and video, but not others, like scrolling and webpage rendering?
also, rumor has it that Android 3.0 will implement graphics acceleration, so for a good portion of the time you have your G2 you should enjoy said acceleration (for the record, yes I believe the G2 will be definitely be upgradeable to Gingerbread)

Haha same here. This is the qwerty device I've been waiting for!
After I watched the videos I actually got the impression the Desire Z had better build quality than the Desire HD did. I didn't see any brushed aluminum on the HD but it's all over the Z. Reporters even said that most of the Desire Z is made of metal (aluminum) and looks amazing. The HD looked just like the Evo 4G to me, which feels sturdy in hand, but doesn't have that fancy brushed aluminum finish to it.

Well, regardless of what you think you see, the HD is unibody (meaning its body is made out of one piece of aluminium) and the front is largely made out of glass...
Of course Im basing all this on what Ive heard and seen rather than my personal experience as I havent touched any of these yet. The Desire Z is made out of aluminium and plastic, while the z-hinge is supposedly made out of some sort of metal.. according to a HTC spokesperson, some kind of strong alloy. So at least it seems they have done a good job with that mechanism which is great news, as the Touch Pro and Touch Pro 2 tends to get jerky after a while!
I am basically sold on the G2 at this point. I have been a loyal Verizon customer for over 6 years. A year ago I never would have thought of leaving...but in the last 6 months, I have been running all the Donut/Eclair/Froyo builds on my aging HTC Vogue (KUDOS to DZO, Myn, Incubus26jc and the whole Android Vogue group, their work is amazing) and even an imperfect Donut is better than WinMo. Running their modded ROMS has sold me on stock Android.
Not at all interested in WinPho 7...it looks lame and locked up. I was going to stick with Verizon, but kluging Bing on the Fascinate was the last straw. Any carrier that would do that does not care about Android at all...or their customers. Sense is the only UI I'd consider using...but even Sense is losing steam. Gingerbread is going to blow it away, I think.
At any rate...Tmo seems the only carrier interested in delivering the pure Android experience. They have better plans...and this new phone is going to be amazing, with lots of dev support.
I'm sold...goodbye Verizon.
If you think about it the new sense w/landscape is already developed for Desire Z so it should be a quick port and we would have the new sense and stock. I like to switch back and forth and the keyboard and HSPA+ are very tempting.
My thoughts after the announcement is I want an HTC Desire HD.

Good choice. The G2 is definitely going to bring attention to T-Mobile. I think people are getting tired of all these Touchwiz/Motorblur phones and want Stock android. Like you said it seems that only T-Mobile cares about this. Verizon only cares about money and exploits Android to fill their pockets.

lol well, make no mistake, t-mobile cares just as much about making money as verizon does. they're just trying to carve out a niche in the market for "with google." that's their selling point for the G2. verizon's selling point is their network, which I think we can all agree is the best (in terms of coverage). they don't need to exploit a niche market because they're super mainstream, so they have the luxury of adding even more to their bottom line by making deals with companies like microsoft, i.e. the Bing deal
seems that the Desire Z and HD haven't won over everybody...but it is still quite popular (this is the Desire Z forum afterall)...I was thinking of buying it on the play.com website...but does anyone know if they do free shipping to Australia?

Sucks for them. Those people won't be happy until the first dual-core 1.5Ghz phone with 400ppi and built in toaster gets announced. Even though they could not use that kind of speed...
Why don't you go on their website and see?

don't be to sure of verizon's network being that great - a) the more users on a network, the slower the network and that is the down side to verizon's network - they sell that network too well. But b) as far as coverage, don't underestimate Tmo's network or partnership carriers. Every year i travel with a couple of partner company reps to visit suppliers & clients in upstate Vermont (2 miles south of the canadian border), northwest texas, new mexico & oklahoma. One is with verizon & the other on AT&T (yeah i know AT&T is weak), but whenever we're somewhere rural, the verizon phone drops all bars while my tmo still has 1-2 - leaving Derby, VT and heading south, we're talking a 90 - 100 mile stretch that's pretty desolate going into low foothills - but the last time, my verizon buddy had to use my phone to finish a 20 minute call.
we've gone thru this 3 years running, whether we're in VT, New Mex, Tx or Oklahoma and every year he comments he needs to look at Tmo for his company. While Tmo may not own the entire network, they've been smart in partnering with a lot of the small carriers.
FYI
I have a G2. I love it. I have a Vibrant as well. I hate it. I have exchanged it 5 times for warranty I think. When talking to T-mobile they offered to exchange it for any device of equal retail value, within the next 30 days. I have until November 15 to decide what I want.
Since I already have a G2, what should I do? Should I get the MyTouch? Should I get the HD7? What would you do? Why?
Help me make a hard decision. I am leaning heavily towards the MyTouch. Can you think of any reason for me not too?
I would get another G2, wait a little while, get an unlock code from Tmo and then sell it on Ebay or Craigslist and keep the cash for the holidays
I would get a WP7 phone because this way youll be able to compare the two platforms (if you are a true phone geek)..... and if you dont like it, you can sell it for cold hard cash because it WILL be in demand for the holidays.

LOL you are kidding, right?
I recommend getting the WP7 because the MTHD is just another Android device. Get the WP7 and see if it's a worthy platform. If you hate it, sell it.
I am severely torn actually. The problem I have with the WP7 is that it doesn't support the + network. They say the screen isn't so great.
The reason I can't decide about the MyTouch is because, really how much different will it be from my G2? I don't need a FFC, but I could use WIFI calling. Really the biggest reason I am considering the whole MyTouch is because at school I get 0 signal but I can get on the WIFI. It is to come with WIFI calling out of the box.
I guess I will have to go to the Store and compare before I make up my mind. I don't think anything better will be out before Christmas, so it is one of the two. I have to get rid of the POS Vibrant.
I wanted to love it but it is just way too buggy, laggy, and there is no support.
Any more suggestions?
The screen is pretty good. It's not the one on the HD2. I would definitely take the HD7.
You should have opened a poll.

There were OTA updates rolling out for some G2 owners a few days ago. There are rumors that T-Mobile will make it official soon and have it spread. The OTA included UMA support (what you listed as "wifi calling"; to be fair, the application calls it that too). The biggest reason I returned my G2 was because it doesn't support UMA yet; I didn't realize how much I relied on it with my BB Pearl until I couldn't use the cell radio indoors.

But the processor is the 1GHZ with the adreno 200. That means that the graphics will suffer in 3d games. Since the WP7 is supposed to be a huge gaming platform that worries me.
The reason it's called WiFi calling is that's because that's all it is. It isn't UMA. With UMA the call can be handed off to 3G seemlessly when you leave a WiFi area. The WiFi calling does not hand off the call, so in actuality it's not UMA at all.

id get the htc hd2. its a winmo phone, its got the 1ghz processor, plus you can install android on it anyways if you want.
I appreciate everyone chiming in with an opinion. I have made a choice and it is going to be the teeny clone of my G2.
Basically the hardware of the HD7 just doesn't cut it for me. It has the last generation processor. It has the old GPU and all reports say the screen is much less than impressive.
If it had hardware anywhere close to the G2 or MyTouch(4G) then I would love to give WP7 a shot. As it stands I am not going to take my $500 credit (that is what it is basically) and get last years hardware with this years OS on it. I just cant waste money like that.

While it may have the 1st generation Snapdragon, it's far from outdated. And you miss a key point with the Adreno 200. Microsoft has written drivers for it. Microsoft will also be supporting Xbox mobile with a lot of titles and updates. With Android, which has been out for 2 years, your options are tower defense, angry birds, and fruit ninja. There's also emulation, but that will come to WP7 too. However, the G2's keyboard is superior for emulation.
Here's some gameplay on the older adreno 200..
Need For Speed
Harvest Clip 1
Harvest Clip 2
Engadget - Bottom 3 videos
Rocket Riot from the 360 is also being ported to WP7. There's even talk of a Halo game.
EDIT: I hope these links help. The G2 is an awesome phone, but I wanted to make sure you had the facts about the Adreno 200.
Gingerbread
I wish I could own everyphone that comes out.
Spend it wisely, if you love android... get android!!!
Gingerbread hopefully will put Microsoft into shame.
Well my Hermes is getting a little old and I'm shopping for a new phone. The HD2 seems extremely awesome. I love that I could always fall back to WM6.5 if WP7 and Android don't suit me. It seems this phone is also quite common so with a little patience I should be able to find one at a price I want to pay. The only thing that I'm not crazy about it the lack of a hard keyboard. I see that there is a Toshiba K01/IS02 with a hard keyboard that also has a capacitive screen even though it shipped with WM6.5 but it seems to be a rare and undeveloped phone.
Can anyone tell me if there are any other WM6.5/WP7 phones besides the HD2?
I think no atm,
I too was not keen on no hardware keyboard but ended up getting a T-Mob HD2 because the price was right.
All I can say is typing on screen is far faster than any HTC hardware keyboard I have tried & you can use a mini hardware keyboard via BlueTooth if required.
All in all the lack of hardware keyboard was a step forward for my typing experience ...
For the criteria you are asking HD2 is the best. This is the best dual OS phone out there. And I agree with previous post that screen keyboard is way better. My prevois phone was TyTyn II but I think I like sceen keyboard more than hard keyboard. It just takes a little time to get use to typing on the screen. I am really happy with HD2 and I can not think of the better phone for now that does not cost more than 300 euro and have such features. But the choice is yours. Good luck.

Indeed that was a big mistake from HTC ... The flagship model at the time with no video out ! between that & the selected battery capacity some HTC designers & market researchers should of been shot ...
Well I'm not sure about w7 but the HTC touch pro 2 can run Android & w6.5..(a bit laggy though & very outdated) & also has tv out I believe. It's been sometime since I've owed it so I can't remember. I text (up 2) 4000 texts each month & Im coming from the mytouch slide which has a keyboard....I have 2 say I really dont miss it. I will admit it took me a good few days b4 I could text as fast as any of my old phones that had a keyboard.
Personally I would suggest to buy a phone that has good development that way you won't be left in the dark. Going from the tp2 to the mytouch was horrible bc I had a phone that was well developed & then went 2 a phone that was slim pickins 2 mod it.

The Desire HD is sort of like an upgraded HD2. I hear that a lot of devs are also working on it.
I was just like the OP, really excited that I could fall back on to WM6.5 if I didn't like Android or WP7. Then I moved to Android and never looked back.
I do admit the HD2 is a beastly device, I can't think of any other device that is nearly as hackable... the HD2 runs WM6.5, WP7 and Android all basically as if those were all natively supported.
Still though, it will soon be 2 whole years since the HD2 was announced. I personally had one for 18 months before buying a Galaxy SII. The HD2 looks pretty modern on paper... 4.3" screen, Snapdragon processor... but next to a truly modern phone like the GSII the HD2 looks clearly dated.
I put WP7 on the HD2 but it's not really my cup of tea. I also tried going back to WM6.5 but after a year with Android I found it laughably slow and clunky. So I may end up selling the HD2, though it would be by far the hardest device I've ever parted with.
I don't really know what to tell the OP. The HD2 is a hell of a phone and can run the newest versions of WP7, but when you set it next to a newer, official WP7 device you will see the differences. If you don't already own an HD2 I'd advise getting a WP7 phone, maybe one with a better screen than the HD2 has got... unless you really have a need to still be running WinMo 6.5.
wildfire dipped in honey+chocolate sauce is sweet !!
Love the hd2. Got it for it's support of tzone grandfathered plans on 3g. Wm6.5 is a joke. I could not believe how amazing the phone was after removing that dead weight of an os.

I am too trying to upgrade my HD2. I am thinking of Nexus one. It seems similar in many ways to HD2, but will have a better battery life. My plan is to: sell HD2 + $50 = Brand new Nexus one.
I was also thinking of Moto Defy...

I'd recommend looking at a Nexus S... a bit plastic, but the Nexus One is long in the tooth now, in terms of hardware.
Wow thanks for all the input today, Guys! I discovered a couple more things today that are going to affect my phone purchase. The first thing is that the T-Mobile branded HD2 does not support the 850 band and I am an AT&T user so not only would I not get 3G on it, but AT&T generally sends me angry emails when I use like a gig of data while "roaming" on T-Mobile's towers.
I doubt I'm going to be able to get an HD2 that does HSDPA850 at a bargain price so I checked out my upgrade options through AT&T. I am considering the following phones which I can get practically free, and here's my thoughts on each from most to least likely to be my next phone.
Samsung Focus - I've played with this phone at the store and it has the nicest looking screen by far of the three AT&T branded WP7 phones. Looks nice (except no video out). Everyone posting ITT has given me some faith in on-capacitive-screen keyboards and I must have had to work on my Hermes a million times because of the slide mechanism damaging, or more often just twisting the ribbon cable. I guess the only doubt that I have in my heart about this phone is that it's a WP7 only phone and I don't believe in WP7 largely because it's not backwards compatible with any of my WM6.5 apps. It boggles my mind that someone asked why I would want WM compatibility after I have spent nine years using it.
HTC Inspire - Seems like a pretty solid Android phone, and one of only two Android phones in the price range I want to pay (although still $50 more than the Focus). Video out only through DLNA
iPhone 3g 8gb - I think we all know everything we need to know about this animal. It's solid, spare parts are plentiful, and it's extensively developed. I just hate Apple. I don't want to have to install iTunes on my computer and so forth. Still may be my choice purely for resale value.
LG Quantum - Ditto most of the Samsung Focus opinion. Noticeably poorer screen (smaller and backlit LCD vs OLED), but does have a hardware keyboard and is the form factor I am accustomed to from the last six years with Wizard and Hermes. I guess Focus or HD2 would just feel like Wallaby in my pocket though.
Samsung Solstice II - Basically what the Quantum is to the Focus, the Solstice is to the Inspire in the Android arena. Smaller, poorer screen in exchange for a slide out keyboard. DLNA compatible though.
Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi - Seem like decent phones but a little too cute for me. Plus I have even greater misgivings about Palm's WebOS than I do about WP7.
Sony Ericcson Vivaz - I carried an Ngage for a while switching back and forth with Wallaby. There seemed to be a lot of development for Symbian back then and it was stable. Probably not the thing to discuss on this forum though..
Anyway, hopefully I'm not derailing my own thread too much or getting it off the topic of the section I posted it in but I appreciate all the replies and would love to hear what everyone thinks. Deciding which phone to get can be a real brain drain! And what's up with hardly anything having video out? My friend's Evo has a freakin' HDMI port right on it!
