Hi,
I recently got myself a 16-gig micro-sd card on which I want 3 partitions:
1) 12gb (FAT32): Media
2) 2gb (ext2): Apps2SD
3) 2gb (ext2): Debian
I've been trying to make them with gparted and I can't create 2 ext partitions. Whenever I try to format 3, then 2 gets corrupted. Then I fomat 2 again and 3 gets corrupted.
Everything works OK with just 1 FAT and 1 ext partition. The problem comes when I create the two ext partitions.
Does anyone have an idea about what the issue is?
Thanks in advance.
No one? Has anybody managed to create a similar layout on their sd card? Anyone with two ext partitions?
I'd appreciate some info.
Is there a reason for ext2?
Have you tried ext3 / ext 4? Even if you don't want 3 or 4, might be good to try for troubleshooting purposes.
Any reason for two ext2 partitions?
If no one here knows, a great place guaranteed to have the answer is http://ubuntuforums.org
2gig for applications is WAY overkill, even 1gig is. Just use a ubuntu live cd, if you don't run it already, to format the card.
ext3 supports journalling, which I think may be harmfull to my sd card.
I don't really think the 2 gigs are the issue here. Any size will fail. I'll try a few more things tomorrow and post back.
Thanks for the replies.
BTW I do use Ubuntu as my main OS.

Hello everyone, I got a question. I just got a class 6, 16GB msdhc card in today and when I went to transfer some files onto it it occurred to me that maybe I might need to have a second partition for something in the future, i.e ext4 or maybe a yaffs partition. I see others making a 1 GB partition on theirs and formatting them to EXT.
Is this something I should do to mine and what reasons/benefits are there to doing this? I keep hearing about something called apps2sd. Does that mean I can install apps to my external sd card when I run out of onboard memory or is it something else?
I have Paragon on my Netbook already and just wondering, lol.
Thanks in advance for "friendly only" replies....
anyone please?
I don't see why, the phone has 2 gigs of memory reserved for programs.

Ok so no other reason? Speed, efficiency? I installed it without creating a partition and did a bench on it and its twice as fast as the internal nand according to J Bench.
Thanks for the advice
hi all!
we all know now that you can partionion your SD card, so that you can fit bigger roms on your phone. is it like having 2 sd-cards in one?
whats the differense between ext2, ext3, ext4? when should you use 2, when 3 and when 4?
should you combine them? then why? when is it needed?
woulde be nice if you took the tima and explaned it a little bit!
have a nice day!
Ext refers to the way the data is laid out and indexed. Just like FAT or FAT32 or NTFS. 2,3and4 refer to the version of ext, and it doesn't matter which you use. I use ext3, and id probably go for 3 or 4 over 2.
A lot of custom ROMs out there for the Android utilizes Dark Tremor’s A2SD which of course enables you to store your apps and phone’s dalvik cache in the SD card and saves you more free memory for more apps.
This is good especially if you download lots of games to your phone.
Requirements:
SD card reader – since you need to connect your SD card to the PC.
A partitioning tool. – I suggest Partition Wizard by Mini-tool – http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
How to partition the SD Card:
Connect your SD card to your PC and let Partition Wizard detect it.
Delete all your current partition in the SD card. Make sure to back up your files first.
Using the partition wizard, create a Fat32 filesystem. Make sure that it’s set as primary and has a 32kb cluster. Leave space for the ext4 partition. (if your SDcard’s size is 4gb, then just allocate around 3.4gb for the Fat32 parition.)
Using partition wizard, create a ext4 filesystem on the remaining unallocated parition of the SD card. It is advisable that you allocate 512mb for your ext4 partition.
Once done, you can now flash/install your custom Android ROMs that utilizes Darktremor’s Apps2SD.
PS: I wrote this because I always see people asking everywhere on how to partition their SD cards.
And what about this tutorial..?
Just use Search Button...

I admire you for searching that. I found that too. However, I'm getting tired of newbies asking around the threads and just getting that same answer.
That's why I wrote this. The intention of this is good. Don't spoil it.
Yes you are right...
For people is easier just ask a question than try to search answer by yourself...
Thanks this gonna help once i get the card reader xD

hey bro. maybe you could add some reasons why ext4 is better than ext2 or ext3. thanks!
mine says damaged sd card. format? like that.
help!
do i really need a card reader? Is it not okay to just connect phone to PC with SD card in it?

Nope. Most SD cards will have a problem when flashed that way. So better use a card reader.
How do i know if the script is working? I've started A2SDGUI, but in the tab that should show me used and free space SD-EXT entry is the same as /cache, that is 24mb total (I've created 512mb ext4 partition).
Does the DT: Apps2SD work on gingerbread already? it has been the only thing stopping me from upgrading ever since couldn't stand that out of memory notification
Has anybody tried partioning their 2gb default sd card?

It can be partitioned but not advisable if you use stock samsung 2gb class 2 for a2sd, yes a2sd will run but it may give you a poor phone performance. buy a class 4 atleast sd card.

Yes you can partition ext4 on your 8gb sd card, i recommend 1gb for ext4 if you play heavy games. BTW you can adjust the size of partition using minitool partition home, search the forum for link.

Are you kidding me? its in the first page on this thread mate.
I can't get my phone to see 2 sd card partitions, but to use just the full card for both, im afraid if the card was getting full it would erase irreplaceable files in order to have enough clear space for the ram swap.
Can someone help me either with having experience with doing so with an unpartitioned sd card, or tell me which format my 4.0.4 phone will see as a second or swap partition? My phone does pass the test with the free utility, but I don't want to buy until I know it's worth it...
If someone could help me with this that would be great. As described in my other thread nobody is helping me in, I've tried fat32 with second ext4, ext3, and ext2 partition. None works. Even tried them both as fat32 as I don't plan on using link to SD. Still no dice. If i put what I want as my swap partition first, my pc doesn't see the rest of it as regular storage.
Help?? Pls.....

So I have a Samsung Tab a6 7 T280 wifi and I've inserted a MicroSD card (128GB). I've done this with the stock os first and I just got the message card can be removed safely. and it wouldn't let me mount it.
Now I've installed the Tinker V5.1 Stock Rom over it and it still happens. (wanted a faster os on it).
I can reformat the card with twrp to be ext4 or exFAT and it doesn't change a single thing. if I insert the sd card I get a quick preparing card and then instantly the message card can be safely removed. clicking on mount sd card in storage from settings doesn't do anything except prompt same message.
I'd try a different sdcard.
Okay, so I hope I can help, I have the SM-T280, I do not use Tinker ROM, instead I debloated my stock ROM and use an SPA kernel by @_mone. If you're trying to extend storage to your tablet, you'll need to use a PC to partition the SD card two PRIMARY partitions. I used on Windows MiniTool Partition Wizard (free), and I used a FAT32 partition and an ext2 partition. With the stock ROM/kernel I had problems using ext4 or extFAT which didn't make sense to me but it is what it is, and I used the app Apps2SD to handle all the work.
The main thing, you need to make sure your SD card has TWO (2) PRIMARY partitions.
Good luck.

What about the Sizes? As in one partition 60 GB the other one also 60 GB ? Or the fat32 partition 1 GB and the ext2 the rest?

FAT32 is not for large capacity storage. Use exFat. There isn't much point in having such a large ext2 partition. It's incompatible with media transfer protocols unless you use a Linux system.
This device fully supports exFAT. I use a 64gb sdcard no issues.

I wouldn't think so, I'm sure it supports 128gb cards.
Just partition it into to halves. First partition exfat. Leave the other unformatted and see what happens.

partitioned into a 40 GB exFAT partition and left rest unpartitioned. Didn't change anything. if I pop it in the tablet I get a short preparing sd card notification then immediately an SD card safe to remove notification...
I'm really confused by this. The tablet is new so I doubt that it's broken but I don't know. Do you know if there's a way to check any kind of logs on Android like dmesg on Linux as an example to see what happens with the sd card?

According to Samsung, the T280 will support a 256gb SD card BUT I know from experience that SD cards over 32gb can be VERY touchy. If you use a PC to remove all of the partition and then let the tablet try to do its own formatting and it still doesn't work, I'd say you have an incompatible SD card. That doesn't mean the card is bad but that it just won't work in the T280.
As an example, a Samsung EVO+ card (which can be found on eBay for $30) will probably work while a "no name" card from China, probably won't.

I always use Samsung EVO cards and they always work perfectly. Price per GB they are very reasonable too.
