I would be interested in this as well as I am new to the whole android thing.
So far I have these apps:

Locale (turn off my ringer/other task when I at a certain location)
Tip Calc (because I can't do simple math
My battery by monmonja (to display the the % of battery left on my notification bar)
Tricorder (useful for checking signal strength + I like star trek)
Y5 (Turn on/off my Wifi automatically in certain place, it does a better job than Locale)
Last but not least: Robo Defender (very useful, to kill time)

ShootMe (Screen Grabber)
Task Manager
JuiceDefender - battery saver
Battery use Widget
EasyMoney
Pixelpipe Post & Upload Pro
Ustream Broadcaster
WordPress
Bluff My Call

The last post was like 2 months ago. I agree we should all use the search button before making new topic, but something are acceptable like apps recommendation because apps increase all the time.
If this keeps up, in a few months, we might as well get rid of the ability to create new thread on this forum.

Best Third Party apps

Hello,
Being a newbie to the android community (just moved from my iphone) i wanted to see if there is any best place where we can find best 3rd party apps.
Thanks
Srikanth
ditto. i've been wondering what the best reasons to add third-party apps and to root my Aria. if it's worth risking voiding warranty and all that mess.
i can't seem to find the answer (via Google) except that it gives you all this access you can't get without it being rooted. i'm fine with the factory settings and setup. yeah i'm stuck with ATT's bloatware, but nothing Advanced Task Killer can't kill.
I too would like to hear some recommendations. The only app I've installed was Swype.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
I find Uninstaller a must have app for a rooted Aria with the liberated rom so I do not have to connect to a machine to delete apps. Along with Swype and App Killer are the apps I would consider must haves.
Live wallpapers apk, and the mario live wallpaper apk.

Must Have Apps

So I just picked up a pair of evo's yesterday.
I got my fiance a white one and me a black one.
I'm new to the whole android scene but not to the hacking scene. I came from the palm pre which lets face it sucks if you don't hack it.
But I was wondering what are some must have apps and/or widgets for the evo.
For me and my fiance alike.
I got a task killer and sms popup and some stuff like that. But what else is there that is going to really make this phone shine?
Let me know. OH and I got the xda app so don't worry about suggesting it lol
And I've used xda in the past with my old windows mobile dash/exaclibur. It's a great community.
Please use the Q&A section. It's there for a reason.

If someone would be kind enough to move this for me that would be awesome. I didn't see that question and answers thread at the time of posting this. My bad.
Just do some research.
Task killers are a no no.
There are 70,000 apps to choose from, to each their own. Check out appbrain.com for reviews etc.

[sarcasm] excellent response, junior [/sarcasm]
For one, give up on the task killers now. They are redundant and do more harm than good. Task killers are good for one thing in an android device, closing a problem app. Android does a great job of managing tasks all on its own.
My must haves:
Handcent (be sure to disable notifications in the stock messaging app)
Audio Manager
DocsToGo
Root Explorer
Google Earth
Google Voice (I use it for vvm only)
Dropbox
Pandora
Shazam
System Panel
ShootMe
Wireless Tether for Root Users (now in the market )
What's wrong with task killers? I'll take it off cause I trust you guys but just wondering what is the problem with them?
Barcode Scanner
Apps Organizer - Put apps in folders instead of having one long list
Systray Monitor - See percentage of battery left in toolbar
LED Desire Light - lets you use the flash for your camera as a flash light
Google Sky Map
Dolphin Browser - better browser
Shazam - recognizes songs
Pandora
Music Junk - can find just about any song

Do some searching, you will find plenty of good reading on the subject. You may even start in one of the older device forums, there was a lot of discussion on the subject in the CDMA Hero section.
Android manages it's ram and it does it quite well. A task killer is just another app that is always running, it's completely unnecessary and if you don't set it up right you might be killing stuff that you need.
If you want more detail than that I'm sure it will be VERY easy to find..
@xHausx, fwiw I used to be a huge fan of SysTray Monitor but I learned it runs rampant and uses more juice than it deserves. Unless they have updated it to perform more efficiently I had to drop that one from my must haves list when I had my Hero.
I use a task killer and have had good results with it, I just have it ignore everything except stuff I know is not needed and kill it when I am done. If you kill everything stuff will be constantly restarting and draining your battery
nebenezer got most of the must have apps. However, one app you MUST get is AppBrain. Its also a website. What it does is you go to www.appbrain.com, log in with your gmail account, get the app from the android market and then you can surf the Android market through a web browser and select which apps you want. Then go to your phone, open AppBrain, select Manage my apps, and sync. Then you can install all the apps that you just saw on your PC. Very handy and much easier than surfing the entire market on your phone.
Basically, you will want a file explorer like Root Explorer (only useful if you are rooted (which I recommend you do)), Astro File Manager, ect.
If you dont like the Sense UI that comes with your HTC Evo or if you would like to try something else, some other home applications are available. My fav is LauncherPro but another great one is ADW.Launcher. These apps replace your entire home screen and interface with highly customizable interfaces that can be themed and tailored to your expectations.
The stock music app sucks imo. doubleTwist is a great player to replace it until we get froyo.
Another must is Screebl Lite. This app detects how you are holding your phone and will prevent the screen from sleeping until you set it down so that its resting at a 90* angle or a 180* angle and with this you can have the phone's timer set very low to allow for excellent power savings. Mine's set at 15 sec so when Im reading something on the internet, I dont have to keep tapping my screen so that the screen wont dim, turn off, and lock on me.
Here is the list of Apps I use a lot and are must haves for me:
Barcode Scanner
Torrent-fu
Gmail Unread Count
Screebl Lite
doubleTwist Player
Handcent SMS
Dropbox
AppBrain App Market
Pandora Radio
AudioManager Widget
Engadget
ASTRO FileManager
Gmote 2.0 <~ Very cool app if you like to watch stuff on your PC from your bed or couch.
Places Directory
SwitchPro Widget
LauncherPro Beta
XDA
System
Lastly, the whole speculation on task killers is kinda iffy. Some ppl think that killing tasks hurts the battery cause the apps will just then have to restart and that uses more CPU cycles than just leaving it running in the background, and in theory they are right. With a stock, unrooted, HTC Evo, you are going to have bloatware constantly restarting if you use a taskkiller. I used one anyways cause I multitask like a champ and when I finished my session, I ended it with a task killer and then locked my phone and went about my business. Now, what you need to do is pay for and use a program called 'System'. Its amazing. It will show you all the apps running in the foreground, background, system apps, and user set excluded apps. System shows how much CPU time apps are using and how much of a drain it puts on your battery for a period of time which is set by you, the user. It can monitor and show apps that eat battery like a fat kid at mcdonalds. With System, you can add apps to an "excluded" list so that they arnt killed when you run the taskkiller. Very handy app.
Hope this helps. tl;dr.

Must have/needed apps for our Android HTC HD2?

Now we have some what of a stable build running on our HTC HD2's. I would say it's great enough for everyday use.
What are the apps that we must need/have?
List them here! I'm new to Android so I don't know the apps like that. I would love to know what you guys have or can't go without.
Thanks!

Advanced Task Killer -> Task manager, must have.
Any Cut -> Add any shortcut/action to homescreen
Launcher Pro -> Advanced homescreen options and smoother interface (a few of the Andriod build the devs are putting together already have this cooked in)
Sense Analog Clock Widget -> HTC Sense style homescreen clock (if you're not running sense already, obviously)
XDA-Developers -> Complete forum app, must have!!!
Lots more great ones depending on your needs/interests, these are some apps that pretty much everyone should have, IMO.
Enjoy!
ColorNotes - A colour coded notepad app. Can place individual notes on the home screen.
3 (pronounced "cubed") - nice player, can scroll through music or jump by letter. So far I seem to like it better than the other ones out there.
HistoryEraser - Erases Android Marketplace search history among other things. Great if you don't have a rooted rom or don't feel like mucking about with a file mananger/adb.
Taskpanel - task killer with ignore lists and auto kills when low on memory also has a widget. Not sure how it compares to advanced task killer. I think ATK is more automated/simpler so probably the one to go with.
MailDroid - Email app for hotmail, gmail, yahoo, etc. Couldn't get hotmail added to the default mail app.
Tricorder- Hand-held thing from Star Trek. Displays compass/GPS, microphone sound input, 3g/wifi connectivity data.
Frozen Bubble - fun puzzle-ish game from linux.
I'll second Launcher Pro, although I don't think I've ever been able to install it onto a rom that didn't have it built in (using the eclair desire v5 rom). Theres also Linda file manager (installed by default), not sure how it compares to the ASTRO? one.
EDIT: For a file explorer try Open Mananger instead of Linda. Its open source and free, available from the marketplace. It's pretty good.
Dropbox - for storage off your phones memory and can be used on your pc.
XDA Forums App - A Must have.
Setcpu - CPU overclocking or downclocking(saves some battery)
i have a few of the above, i also like
mp3 downloader(download songs)
ringdroid(make ringtones out of any music on your device)
mobile banking
craigspro
ebay
Advanced task killer
XDA Forums App
Sense, could not find any other way to use contact groups. Can anyone give me alternative, Just sense does not make any sense to use
Mobile Banking? To bad that's only for BoA. Is there one for Chase?
BTW: XDA app is great! Not going to the web anymore unless I need to download something.

Game:
Armored Strike Online
Its a tight game, like Worms, and you can play online using Wi-Fi or your mobile network.
Sent from my HTC HD2 running DarkStone HD2Froyo v1
Do most of the games work well on android on hd2, or is it a bit hit and miss at the moment?
Great android market!
Droidbox for dropbox
Goggles
Layar 3d browser
Network monitor
Officesuite
Post it desk
Shazam
Whereismoney (finance)
System panel (great for task manager, backup, sys monitor)
Google translator
Battery status widget

Haven't found a chase app.
Page Once personal Assistant is awesome! Consolidates bank accounts, credit cards, bills and more in one app and it has push notifications. Must have for financial!
Just Downloaded this free game called Replica Island. I have to say, i'm very impressed. It's like a pseudo-action/RPG type game. You control a little android around.
My must have apps are:
Handcent - SMS
StarContact
SetCPU
Euchre
Cribbage
Wish there was a WobbleHD app...

Beautiful widgets (gets you sense clock and some other handy widgets)
SetCPU (saves tons of battery by underclocking the processor when screen is off (create profile))
juiceplotter (shows you a graph of everything your battery does)
Mabilo Wallpaper (amazing, it changes your wallpaper every X minutes and it lets you go through 10000s of wallpapers and download them straight from the app)
eBuddy (best messenger for msn facebook chat and everythign in one)
Action Potato (quality game. )
SMSPopUp (when you recieve a text it pops up ontop of what youre doing for you to delete or answer it quickly, a-la iphone)
Mario Block (a widget that does nothign but spit mushrooms coins and fireflowers.)

Seeing all of you with a smile on your face, testing so many great apps running perfectly on our Hd2 ... It wasn't imaginable 3 mouths ago.

Suggested apps for Oxygen

Hi guys,
I'm busy working on a repo of all the apps you'd recommend to be used on AdamG's Oxygen rom. I've gone through most of the Oxygen rom thread and got some suggestions already, but I need a lot more.
Hopefully this will be included in a future Oxygen rom and will just make it easier for people to find things to improve their experience with Oxygen.
Apps so far are:
System
Cyanogen mms.apk (Fixes issues with mms functionality in Oxygen)
adblock hosts (Fixes the hosts issue some people have with adblock)
Gallery3D (For those of you who prefer the 3D gallery)
ROM Manager Free (Everyone needs this)
Gingerbread Keyboard with dictionary (The current keyboard in Oxygen does not support dictionary)
Backup and Restore
Titanium Backup Free (Helps with backing up apps and removing apps you don't want)
SMS Backup & Restore (Useful for when we have an update to flash)
Call Logs Backup & Restore (Useful for when we have an update to flash)
SMS Backup + (added functionality of syncing sms/calls with gmail)
LifeSaver2 (1 app that backs up both sms and calls. Handles large amount of data)
Share and Explore
Bluetooth File Transfer (Fixes the bluetooth pairing issues on AOSP)
ES File Explorer (Browse directories on your desire)
Widgets (Weather/Clock)
News & Weather Widget (Widget that displays recent news and weather)
Fancy Widget Free (Displays time and weather on homescreen)
GO! Weather Widget (Displays time and weather on homescreen)
gTabSiMiClock
Launchers
ADWLauncher
LauncherPro
GO! Launcher
Gingerbread Launcher by Modaco
Gingerbread Launcher by Eugene (This one has the 3D app drawer)
Please only suggest free apps.
Please post app name and a download link if one is available.
NO +1 POSTS!!! I only need the suggestion once.
On a side note, the proposed names for this project and app are Oxygen Air and Oxygen Breathe. If you have any suggestions on a name please let me, preferably by pm and then we can have a vote to see what it'll be called.
ok, i'll kick off.
free versions of ROM Manager & Titanium.
I agree bout mms.apk and adhost but for every launcher i dont think adam will agree. He said before that will be his one and only default launcher and he'll stick to that.
And i dont really like this idea thing, i prefer tje rom to be as loghtweight as possible without any apps. That way, more freedom and people can install any of their favoured apps.

The rom will not come with any of these suggested apps. It is just 1 app that will work as a repo, like the Market. The difference is that these are apps that fix or improve certain elements or apps that are suggested by the Oxygen community.
My favorite launcher is Zeam, ADW.Launcher, LauncherPro and Go Launcher
Because of Oxygen, I used Zeam but now thinking of changing to Go Launcher since it has so may improvements. Only thing missing is scrollable widgets.

Hi, nice initiative.
I would suggest:
- Since we are upgrading ROMs and sometime full wiping, something to backup/restore SMS, MMS and call logs (like SMS Backup & Restore and Call Logs Backup & Restore) would be really useful.
- less important because it only affects a few Oxygen users: Bluetooth File Transfer. Since pairing with some carkits does not work for AOSP based roms, it is the only way I've found to successfully pair my phone with my carkit.

I thought to suggest this too but wasnt sure if titanium is able to do that (I dont use it.. prefer to reinstall apps).
For sms/call logs, I use sms backup + which is free and best of all, it syncs sms/calls with gmail
I like LifeSaver2 for Call log/Messages backup, it backs up to your SD card and handles large volumes quite well (I exported and imported 3300+ SMS messages without a hitch).
I also like the News & Weather widget, which wasn't in Oxygen 1.0.4.
- fancy widget (free)
- Es file Explorer
i can see this is going to grow into a big list!
@BendingBetty - perhaps you should make this into a poll so we can vote and then you can package up, say the most popular 10 or so....
just an idea...

Right now I'm just wanting to build the repo. So the more the better. I'll stop between 50 and 100. Hoping to then get a suggest an app button in the app to make it easier to manage.
Clock & Weather :
gTabSiMiClock
The modified dialer by Cytown or Wysie. The blacklist number feature is deeply missed.
led light or something like this to use the flash as torch.
the one used on Defros rom is simple and works even when screen timeout. (I do not remember the name of this app)
Advanced Task Killer (free variant)

Hi guys!
Some days before I flashed oxygen 1.0.4 rom on my desire and i just recognised that i havent got sms menupoint. So i cant write ( i dont know if i can receive sms ) messages. If i try i get this: android.process.acore stopped unexpectedly.
Somebody could help me please?
Thanks!
That's the thing I like about Oxygen.
There's basically nothing included.
Then again; I don't think apps such as "SiMiClock" will be included in a ROM. I see the need for ROM Manager to take an example, but I don't feel that it needs to be included in the ROM itself.

I`m struggling to see the sense here, free apps just put in yourself or are people to lazy. Better to be a minimal rom then each person can customise to suit. FWIW I have over 50% of the apps posted on here.

Warlords n00b apps list

Well after owning my desire for a few weeks i have noticed that i keep coming here to look at the appbrain lists and then having to click the link to see what the apps actually do besides that there are lots and lots of pages to scan through to get the apps you actually need/want. So i thought why not put a page together to help all the n00bs like myself out and have all the apps plus a description in one thread
Post 1! Pure Apps .. applications with a function
Post 2! Games .. something to get those fingers tapping
Post 3! Customization .. apps that will make your homescreen or other apps look like you want them too

Ok so you're going to say "but iv'e already got google maps on my desire" , well you are correct you do have it on your desire but the reason i mention it here is that some versions of google maps don't or won't tell you there is an update out even when logged into the market. This is by no means a complete listing so please feel free to offer up your favourite apps or some that you wish you had found when you first started using your desire and i will add them up.
Please don't post any task killers as they are not needed by the android o/s and more often than not do more harm than good so i'm afraid i won't be adding them up here.
Post 1! Pure Apps .. applications with a function
Post 2! Games .. something to get those fingers tapping
Post 3! Customization .. apps that will make your homescreen or other apps look like you want them too
This post is for the Gamers among you!
Angry Birds
For me the most addictive game since space invaders. Use various birds in a catapult to smash the green pigs that stole their eggs. Lots of increasingly difficult, frustrating and soo adictive levels with differently coloured birds each with their own ability if you tap the screen mid flight.

Angry Birds seasons

Video splash on start is excellent and gameplay although hard to get used to at the start is smooth and well thought out by the devs. Good game but no free version so check out the link before you go an buy it.
From $4.99 (at time of writing occasionally they have offers)

Post 3! Customization .. apps that will make your homescreen or other apps look like you want them too
This post is to make your homescreen a little nicer or behave the way you want it to!
Launcher Pro
Launcher pro at first seems like a stripped down version of sense but as you get more used to it you will notice that it's a completely different thing altogether. It will allow you to customise the amount of homescreens the transition when you move from one to the other and allows you a clean canvas for widgets and icons. It will also allow you a bigger homescreen where you can switch the amount of rows and columns. This launcher gives you so many options it's unreal.

TIP! Download home switcher to switcher to switch between Launcher and sense.
TIP! If you decide to stick with launcher pro ensure your sense home screens are clear - this will reduce battery usage.

Allows you to switch between launchers.Standard and Froyo versions available.

Desktop Visualizer allows you to change icons on your homescreen to add custom icons for things such as apps bookmarks etc.Icons can be downloaded and selected from your sd card to add a bit of class to your icons and your homescreen. Very handy if you are trying to stay with one theme for everything.

SiMi
SiMi is a folder app that allows you to put various different types of folder onto your homescreens. Nothing that Android won't already do for you except this tool has the added bonus of making invisible folders (see attached video link) you can still tap the folders and it will come up with a list of apps within them but when folders are closed you can see all of your wallpaper. Useful for those who want a clean homescreen but still want to be able to open apps from the homescreen.
