problems with my email settings - HD2 General

Hi, I just got my HD2 last week and the email functions on it are bothering me a little bit. I just switched from a blackberry curve and here are some of the problems I am having.
my emails seem to be disappearing after some time (and I have not deleted them) are there auto delete settings somewhere that I am not seeing?
the BB I had always kept my emails until I specifically deleted them.
my BB seemed to get my emails almost immediately, where as on the HD2 it looks like it will only refresh as often as every 5 minutes? Can this be adjusted for a faster refresh?
thanks!

I think you can have only the last 50 emails for view, as for the refreshing you can set it to "As items arrive"

Use Active Sync to set up your email, then you can use Microsoft push email to get your email. Its a little harder to set up but works a lot better.

Imap Gmail Fixed

Looks like gmail have fixed their IMAP problem.
All messages HTML included are now coming through will complete bodies.
Holy crap, macguffin! I'll try it out now too! Thanks for the update -- I'll post one when I find out.
Haha, you know, I didn't even know there was a problem with it, but I did just set up Gmail through IMAP on my phone a couple of days ago and have been getting blank emails. Sometime last night though the emails started coming through properly, so I guess that's what you're talking about, so yeah, I can confirm that it works now.
Wow that took them a long time to fix, but yay! Good news. Thanks for the heads up, I gave up checking on it a month ago.
Wow.. it is a very good news. I can start using the default mail client to check Google Email and as well as check my work email as well.
FYI...
This is working on my Treo700 now...
I did have to delete my account information and re-download. But after that! It worked fine!
Ditto.
I deleted my account settings from my kaiser or vodafone v1615 and then set the system up again so it downloaded a weeks emails and it all works fine.
Thanks Googlemail.
I'm gonna try it for a few days before posting it works... So you'll hear from me again.
Confirmed. It works!
I've been forwarding my email to a hotmail account to get push for awhile now since gmail wasnt working, I think I'm going to just keep doing that.
wow, it actually works. took me a week to figure out what alternative to use instead of my gmail, now a few weeks later they actually fix it, took long enough.. how long was this not working for, a year or so? lol
this the best thing since christmas lol btw also confirm this
I have only had my kaiser for a month so it has not bothered me a lot but now it works it will save on my data costs as i was using 2 devices for my email.
At the moment Flexmail is running, so please could anyone of you check this:
I want to have the last week's mail on my device. Can I do this with the built-in messaging application?
Syncing the whole inbox would be too much on my device and deleting every old mail manually is annoying.

There is an option in the email account's settings to download anything from today's message to last 3/5/7/30 days worth or even all messages.
Also IMAP will keep everything synchronised.
Is that what you meant?
Yes, thanks. That is the feature I meant.
But now i see, that windows mobile's messaging application has no imap idle support.
So, I will continue using Flexmail. It is not that comfortable, but I can adjust the location of saved mails and it has imap idle.
Imap idle is MUCH more flexible than direct push over exchange

Yey! Good news... shame ther is no folder mapping in pocket outlook though. Plus i would want it to not upload sent items as then you would end up getting copies!

Weird email problem?

Hi. I am using an unbranded Hero on Voda in the UK and everything seems to be more or less fine, except... I have a strange email problem.
I have set up my POP3 account to check and deliver mail every five minutes (I don't use Gmail for this) and it works absolutely flawlessly except that every few days it simply stops receiving. The phone seems to poll as usual, but the mail just doesn't arrive, although it is there and later arrives in my Outlook inbox on my PC.
I have made no changes, installed no new apps or really done anything at all before the mail stops arriving. The only way around it is to remove the account and set up a whole new one, which is a pain - the main problem, though, is that I miss emails until such a time as I realise that it has stopped working.
Email is VITAl to me - does anyone have an idea as to what I can do to get around this please?
Many thanks, in advance.
download K-9 mail from the market place.
Try it using this program. If it contniues to fail after a few days, the issue is with the network or the server and we know where to look for issues.
If it works, then it's the HTC Mail program that is at fault, but you now have a program which does not have the fault and you can now receive your emails ok.
Are you killing any tasks, I have found that you need the HTC mail program running for it to poll for the mails.

I am only killing Tweet and Stocks, but otherwise nothing. Can the mail programme turn off itself for any reason? Besides, it is polling - just not actually collecting anything. Many thanks!
Same problem
I know its an old thread but I didn't want to start a new one yet.
I'm having the same problem with my BT email. Its OK for a week or so then just stops fetching the emails from the server. I delete the account, re create it and it works fine again.
Any thoughts?
I've noticed that mine sometimes doesn't alert when it downloads the email, I get an alert but the actual sync time is 10-20 minutes before.

This has got so bad that I have had to 'turn off' the HTC mail function and downloaded the free k9 app, which is actually better, as it automatically deletes messages from the phone when you delete them from the server (or read them on your desktop.) I recommend it...
have you checked whether your trash folder is full? I was getting the same, and then once I went in and delted all the mail from the trash folder, I started getting mails again. There doesn't seem to be a way of automatically deleting mails from the trash folder?

Help with Yahoo Mail! Downloading all my inbox for unknown reason!

Hey guys,
I am having this really weird issue with my email (which is Yahoo mail). I would initially set up my email as usual, i.e. by entering username and password and let it do it's thing.
I had setup my email settings as "download messages for the past 3 days" but for some reason after leaving the phone in sleep mode for several hours (i.e. overnight, while charging or unattended at work), it will then start downloading everything in my inbox under yahoo mail which is around 3,5xx emails without me knowing! and then the phone will start to become very very sloooow... having manila running 90-95% at all times, (my observation) apparently windows mobile email is trying to sync everything from the inbox (after finish downloading) to HTC sense which is causing a Big Slowdown! which is i think the reason why manila runs at 90-95%.
this has been an issue for me since i bought the phone, so i always end up deleting the account on the phone so it'll stop the sync to HTC sense and stop manila from running 90-95%.
It is very annoying and i was wondering if there is anybody over here has experienced the problem and solved it?
i have also tried upgrading my rom to the current european 1.6x but no luck and still acting the same. I just don't want to stop using the email that i've been using for the last 9 years just because of this.
I will greatly appreciate any help.
Anyone>?????? anybody??????? i am sure some of you uses yahoo mail.
just wanted to find out, if anybody is under the same situation when using yahoo mail!
thanks
How did you add your account in the first place? You should just enter your email address and let the HD2 setup automatically.
I guess you setup pop3 instead?
I'm facing the same issue. I went to HD2 email setup, entered the email address, password and used the default yahoo settings which HD2 suggested.
For the first 2 days I kept getting all new emails. However on the 3rd day overnight it downloaded the whole yahoo mailbox with over 2500 emails. Had to delete the account and add it back a couple of times, but the issue keeps recurring.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here. Is there any setting I need to change to prevent this from happening?
Chaps,
Don't know what settings you are using for Yahoo but if you want to restrict how many emails get downloaded to your device then do the following:
On the device go to Inbox>Menu>Tools>Options>Email Account (whatever you have called it). Tap on that and then tap on Send/Receive schedule.
Form here you can set the frequency of updates and how many days worth of emails you want downloaded onto the device.
Hope this is helpful
WB
This issue also exists on my Raphael. Started a few months ago for some reason.
No matter what you set your retention limit to (3 days, 7, etc) it always tries to pull everything and bogs the phone done like crazy. Last time I wiped it, it was set to 7 days and it had email dating back to Jun 09.
Any idea on a resolution? as it seems to be affecting various devices.
up to now, i am still experiencing this problem.
i have tried everything.. i.e. hard reset, flashing to duttys holy grail v.05 rom and after setting up everything, it will still the same issue.
this issue only applies to yahoo mail.. i never had issues with gmail.
i wonder if it's because i am not using mail plus which requires a monthly fee and benefit you to use outlook using forwarding.
i never had this issue wih the iphone, although if you search yahoo, they specifically support iphone and blackberry only and regular mobile phones.
i have this problem too. i think its has something to do with Yahoo POP settings rather than our device. Gmail has a much more advanced mail settings than Yahoo. The gmail (IMAP) which is free is much better than yahoo plus (POP).
delete the accoun and wehn setting up again choose advanced settings you will find what limits this things
Same problem here
Hello, I have this problem in my Touch Pro 2. Haven't found a solution yet but I think the problem is at yahoo mail b/c i have used other imap and pop emails w/o having this behaviour.
It's probably some maintenance yahoo does to their servers that changes each mail datetime and thus, the WM mail client bring all inbox items and the phone gets freezed.
If someone find a solution for this issue please let me know.
regards,
Yasel
Same problem...
I am seeing this for my Yahoo mail on my Imagio also. It doesn't matter what the settings are, every few days, my entire inbox starts downloading (10000+ messages) causing the phone to hang & requires a hard reset.
Has anyone found a fix?
crude workaround
weird, this has started to happen to me on my tp2 in the last couple of weeks, maybe yahoo is doing something to different servers on a rolling basis.
Until it's fixed I've set up a folder within yahoo via my pc where I've dumped all emails over a couple of weeks old. I haven't synced my phone with that folder so myinbox is limited to a couple of hundred mails at the most. Once the issue resolves itself I'll put them back.

Are there any ways to enable or simulate "push" email on POP or IMAP accounts?

Are there any ways to enable or simulate "push" email on POP or IMAP accounts?
I need to get frequent updates from my ISP email box. I currently have my HD2 set to poll for new mail every 5 minutes, but this simply murders the battery: it burns 4 or 5% per hour even in stand-by, let alone when I'm actually using it. I've heard that push email is actually more economical than polling every 5 minutes (as the "heartbeat" signals are sent out more rarely and contain less data). Obviously one can enable push email when talking to an Exchange server or to hotmail, but by default there's no way to do it when communicating with a POP or IMAP server. Is there any way to achieve or simulate email push from one of those?
One possibility that I have heard of but know virtually nothing about is a thing called "IMAP Idle" - if anyone wishes to educate me on how it works and how it can be accessed under Windows Mobile, and whether it can actually help, here, then I'm all ears! But any suggestion is welcome.
There are really no push email for Windows Mobile. Only for Iphone.
I'm looking for the same thing.
I found this other thread here which can be what you are looking for.. (oh, I can't post links as I'm new).
Search for the thread called: SchedHandler 1.74 / Scheduler for PUSH EMAIL+Polling/execute/switch/etc
In the windows mobile apps / games subforum.
Use Gmail with the IMAP service and Activesync - this seems to work reasonably effectively as a push email service.

The built-in Windows Live application does push email very nicely for hotmail - no download needed. But I was asking about POP or IMAP email accounts.
I forward all my POP accounts to gmail and pick them up as they are pushed over ActiveSync. I've tested it by emailing me and my wifes blackberry and its only marginally slower.

I also tried this; and it worked fine for push email part. However, did you solve the problem of any replies you send coming from the gmail account? Despite trying various "reply from" settings within gmail I couldn't get it to reply as if from the original account.

There is apparently a way to make gmail send through another account, I can't get it to work.
Same here, I just took the plunge and configured my gmail account for push, and fetching from my 3 usual POP3s. It seems to work pretty well, but the reply email address is indeed always the gmail one even if I set the address to be "address the message was sent to", or even just set another address as default.
Gmail can be a bit slow as well, it seems it checks the POP3 about every 5 mins. Push can take from 30 seconds to 10 minutes. When replying, the outgoing mail appears in the desktop inbox right after the mail was sent from the device, but there can be a delay until it's actually sent out, I tried twice, and once it took 20 mins and the other 2 mins only.
So you'd better not be too stressed, but it definitely beats having to check manually, sometimes 10 times in a row, times 3 accounts, for nothing as there's no new mail...
Hosted Exchange is very affordable and solves all the problems people have with technologies like IMAP4 and POP3, which really are out-dated, and, in the case of IMAP4, not consistently implemented.

Yes there is, and is provided by a company called Seven, for free. http://www.seven.com/ . Give it a try.
I use it on my Treo Pro and it works fine. Sign up for a Seven account, download the cab file and configure your POP or IMAP accounts.
**NOTE**
If you're using GMAIL (which is IMAP), Google provides free push for GMAIL via Exchange Activesync (Google Sync, you get push GMAIL, contacts, calendar). Go here http://www.google.com/mobile/sync/
OK, when I logged in to gmail this morning I could see that it was now polling my POP3 only every hour or so. It says it decides the polling interval on how often you get messages, and that it's not possible to define one manually. So that can lead to long delays.
So instead of having gmail poll my POP3, I've now set my server to forward everything to gmail. It's a lot better now, I get the mail on my phone within 5 mins max.
It seems a lot of people don't understand what "Push email" actually is...

Can you expand your point?
As far as I am aware Push Email is when the MDA pushes the mail to the MUA at the point of the mail arriving on the MDA as opposed to the MUA polling the MDA for new mail at a predetermined time.
Without going into all your TLA's, Push email is effectively the server saying I have an email for this client and pushing it to the device telling the device, "heh I got an email for you, catch!" like the way Blackberry works.
The majority of people on this thread keep referring to POP3/IMAP4 which is Pull email as the mail program goes to the server (be it every 30 seconds or every hour) and asks "have you got any mail for me please?" to which the server replies yes or no...
The OP from what I saw wanted to know if any Push Email solutions existed, eg. Blackberry style and the majority of replies were to do with Pull Email solutions, eg. POP3/IMAP4, so I just made the comment I did.
Heh ho and all that malarky...
Edit: on re-reading (I am at work so may have skimmed it a bit quickly) maybe my original comment wasn't relevant to the post. Ah well

I think we understand the distinction between pull and push just fine, thanks.
My question was whether there is a way to make an email account based on POP or IMAP behave as if it were push-based. Use of IMAP IDLE should achieve this (if I understand it correctly - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAP_IDLE). I was also inviting other suggestions.
to reiterate my earlier point google mail does free exchange connection to their POP/IMAP service, you can realtime sync mail, contacts and calendar data, its pushnot pull.

Hotmail is ruining my hd2, help

is it just me, or despite every method, setting, tweak humanly possible, Hotmail just basically sucks on this phone?
ive tried using the windows live client, ive tried using the htc email setup. ive set to headers only, text rather than html, sync only today, every 15 minutes. ive tried almost everything i can possibly find and still, it syncs 14000 emails and bogs down my phone whicl searching/connecting etc.
the only thing that works is to set the sync to 'manual" but even then, when i manually sync, total phone destruction (in the form of stuttering/freezing) ensues.
i get 500 exchange emails daily, puyshed in real time, no issues, lighting fast. Hotmail however...the worst.
am i alone ?
thanks
jason
14000
Yes you are alone.
I work in customer service so I'm gonna take a leap and say your frustration has blinded you.
Hotmail or windows live only syncs 50 e-mails by default. Take some time to calm down and explain exactly what is going on.
1) What ROM version do you have
2) What exactly are you trying to do
3) What program do you want to use. i e Windows live
4) What exactly happens i e. Is it immediately you sync via windows live that it freezes or is it when you try to run a program.
5) Have you tried a soft reset; and if you have have you tried a hard reset with only windows live initiated to see if the symptons persist.
We'd all love to help but help us help you.
I use Exchange and Hotmail both through the HTC email interface just fine. I have Hotmail on manual sync. Works like a champ. If you want, try going into the inbox first, then doing a menu-->send/receive and watch the status bar at the bottom.

thanks for the replies. ill try ot be a bit clearer:
there are several ways to go about installing hotmail; i believe i've tried them all, with every possible configuration. they are as follows:
(please note that not only do i have sense disabled, i do nto have sense installed on my rom (see sig.)
windows live msgclient:
-- i constantly recieve the message "windows live is temporarily unavailable, please try again". keep in mind that i have exchange mail pushed in real time and two gmail accounts which sync every 5 minutes, no issues with them whatsoever.
here are my windows live msgclient configurations:
1) today screen options are unchecked
2) sync options: only "sync email" is checked
3) sync schedule: every 15 minutes, although ive tried manual and triead real time, same results.
4) syc status: synchronized
5) roaming: both boxes are checked, but ive also had them unchecked, no difference in results. still get this "windows live is temporarily unavailable, please try again"
6) messenger: unchecked
7) email: preview size is 15k but ive also tried every other setting, no difference. the other two boxes are checked but i have also had trhem unchecked as well, no difference.
8) about: version 10.7.0061.2000
after this failed for the millionth time, i tried using the htc email client setup instead. and uninstalled the windows live client. i get that same message constantly, AAAAAND my phone freezes up all the timne since it is constantly trying to sync 14k emails.
thats what i have thus far. the email works mostly. but the popup is crushing my soul.
any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

You need an option in the setup to only have it pull from the last week or less off the server. Otherwise there is no way that I know of besides deleting all of your old emails on hotmail to keep it from pulling everything on their server, which will crash your phone depending on how many emails you have on there. Window's Mobile setup lets you pick how many days worth you need when setting up Yahoo.
Did you log in to the hotmail website? I know they made some changes recently to an Exchange server format. I know that with my exchange account it doesn't give me the option. It pulls everything off the server. So I move old emails to a folder that I created on my local hard drive and move them every week or so.
Is there an option to move emails to a folder on your local hard drive in Hotmail? OR maybe you can set it up on the website so that it only pulls a few days worth?

Yep. I bet you can set it up in that program. Either a local hard drive folder to move your old emails to or set it up to pull from a certain number of days. Now you are cooking with grease...
