Here's the scenario: My 5 year old daughter wants to watch a movie on my Hero. I bring up Madagascar 2 and hand her the phone. 2 minutes later she says the movie stopped because she accidentally touched or swiped the screen.
Is there a way to disable the touchscreen so that whatever program is active doesn't get interrupted? Maybe something like Proximity Sensor, but without having to use the sensor. Or some type of key button combination like Home+Search+Volume Down.
is this a serious question? no you cannot disable the touchscreen.

Yes, it's a serious question. I saw this posted in a WinMo forum:
"If it's a custom app you could get the app to set the sensitivity of the screen in the registry to zero. That should do it. I've not been able to find anything existing though. Not even on Codeproject, which usually has unusual stuff like that. I suspect the Compact Framework doesn't support it so the registry is your best bet."
I'm sure it's possible...just out of my realm. Hell, if someone can make the End Call button disappear to avoid Face Hang Ups, I'm sure someone else could make this happen.

android doesn't have a registry like winmo, ive never heard of anybody being able to disable the touchscreen, nor want to do it in the first place. sorry....
Good idea, but would probably be most practical to have built into a video player app. An Android VLC player would make my year...maybe after DIVX starts hitting more Android handsets this year more versatile players will show up.
the problem with media players is the have to run in a java VM instead of nativley.

Android has a Native development kit available so you can run native C++ code. There is a topic over at the VLC site talking about getting someone to do this - but its REALLY difficult to do it. I thought about it, but I have 0 experience with Media software.
It's my understanding the NDK is a joke a this point. The guys at Coreplayer have been trying to get a full functioning media player for months.

Probably going to have to end up doing what I did with my kid: Tell her if she touches the phone the movie will end...then take it away for the day. Try again the next day. After a day or two she'll get the point. We also found a good spot on a table and in the car to set the phone and told the rugrat not to touch it if he wanted to see the movie. My kid's 8, so that worked. Not sure if you'll have the same results.
Not quite what you're looking I know, but...probably the best you'll get: Train the kid to leave it alone

That is the only way I see it as possible. Android has several running levels for programs. I don't think it is possible for a backgrounded app to take over any functionality of the touchscreen.
Someone would have to write a custom player that doesn't respond to the screen.
For example there is a toddler game app (can't remember the name) that you can only exit by touching a combination of points on the screen. Writing this idea into a kid's player would be a cool app idea.

Hi Guys, just thought id post my thoughts on the Leo.
Ive been using mine now for over 2 weeks having come from an N95(and several failed attempts at finding something I liked inbetween including various iphones, N97 etc etc) so to the thoughts.,
The screen for me was a bit tricky as many have said before, I have huge hands, but decided to persevere.
Has to be said that after about a 10 day period typing messages etc became much easier, after 2 weeks it was brilliant, but then came the eureka moment, which it has to be said was'nt good for me, but telling all the same.
After flashing the ROM, the typing experience became similar to a fair proportion of others on here, infuriating!
Now thinking logicly about it, I decided it couldn't be the screen as was fine before, only thing changed was the ROM, so was software, tried a screen align, hmmm, worse still, did it again, slightly better, but still no cigar, went and checked settings and set to how id had it before, no vibrate(seems to fubar typing), keyboard click on, screen click on, correct as you type on, complete words in both XT9 and ABC both on and did screen align again, now zoila, its better than before(after another screen align) no more false inputs although xt9 has to learn my vocab again(annoying) but it really is a revelation.
Now the only thing annoying me is the long sms list issue (although partialy sorted by selecting all messages and going in through WM)
Can I just add, absolutely epic site guys and thanks to all those that spend there own time making the WM experience better for all!!
Noooo! you've got it all wrong. You're supposed to try typing for 5 minutes, throw your toys out the pram and go buy an iPhone.. *then* come on to xda developers and post a nice long rant about how poor the entire phone / windows mobile is (bonus points for expletives and spelling mistakes).
Fixing problems in an intelligent, logical manner? whatever next?!
I just got my HTC HD2 from Royal Mail. Everything seems to be working flawlessly. The screen is just gorgeous and the navigation is really smooth and snappy. The videos online really do not do it justice.
I've just got a few of questions. I heard that Opera does not support flash, is this true? and will this change in the future?
I tried using IE to open youtube but it doesn't seem to play anything. It has the flash 9 logo and that's it. How do I play videos via the web browser?
Also, when I open up IE it says that it connects using my data plan and I may get charged. Does it not work over WiFi?
I'm just uploading files onto it right now but yes, this device has had my jaw on the floor since I opened the packaging. By far the best phone I have ever owned.

Opera doesn't support flash.
Use the You Tube app already on your handset, it works perfectly.
For playing videos within your browser, download the Skyfire browser for free. I don't like the interface and therefore only use it when I have to but it supports flash and you can play videos and surf for porn on it lol.
gamma500. looks like you still need to find the return key (aka as enter key) as this is the only thing missing in your message. Or did you type it on a PC keyboard, and is the return key (aka as enter key) broken?

Opera doesn't support flash and IE only has 'flashlite' which isn't suitable for playing video. You will need to download Skyfire but the You Tube app will be in your start menu - press the icon at the top left of the screen or the windows button in the middle at the bottom - then scroll through the icons.

Fantastic! Disabling the vibrate response was one of the best things I could do! I can actually type for long periods of time with little errors and the XT9 and ABC is working great now, I didn't realise it could learn... so have been typing in all of my Northern Irish phrases that we use over here!
I'm happy once again, I'm really starting to love this phone; was a bit doubtful at the start and was thinking my N95 8gb looked like a good option to go back to but my faith is growing in this device by the day!
Once again to OP, thanks!
It Just gets better with time Rossimac, which only became apparent after having flashed the ROM and thereby losing two weeks of it.
Any devs out there wanna give this a go?
I would love to be able to rotate my phone in any direction and have the screen flip like on my omnia... I know sense doesn't flip to landscape, thats not a prob, what I really want is to be able to flip the phone upside down and still use it as the correct rotation.
Reason I want to be able to do this is so I can use my phone in the cup holder of my car again, and to do this it must be upside down because of the charger placement... (same as on my Omnia)
Seems a pretty simple request, would be nice if it could auto run and run in the background without using up to much resources to.
If anyone is able to do this, would be awesome.
Thanks
Seconded ... but
I too would like to be able to rotate at least the other way; when showing off the Incredible, people rotate to landscape the other way and nothing happens, so they figure it doesn't rotate. I have to say "no turn it the other way" but it would be great to just not have to think about it.
BUT ... regarding the OP ... I simply took a dremel to the dash mount I bought (the beanbag, since California law doesn't allow sticking to the window in the middle). Carved out enough for a charger, and am done with it
I'd also like to see this. Anyone know the reasoning behind only allowing landscape mode by rotating to the left, and not the right? Even my old BB storm could handle rotation in both directions.
Agreed. This would be useful.

I would think it's because the majority of the world is right-handed and by rotating to the left, the optical track button is on the right side. I could complain because I'm left-handed, but hey at least my phone still has a signal when I hold it in my left hand, unlike other phones out there
This is an option in the cyanogen rom available in the rom manager. If you can look past the few bugs in the rom you can enjoy the 360 degree rotation you are looking for.

Then we wouldn't have limits as to which rom we would have to use.

So will this be possible as an App?

Thanks Mikey for re-opening this thread , you can delete the Why thread now if you like...
So anyone know if any of this is possible?
Hello, I am a .NET Web Developer that has become enthralled with the android operating system. I had an idea the other night while me and a friend of mine were discussing his adulterous spouse.
The app would activate the mic and begin streaming audio to a remote server (she's not tech savvy, so as long as it's not obvious she won't notice). He could listen to what was happening in real time, with a slight time lag, and activate/deactivate from the same remote server by having the app check a variable on the remote server that he could change for whether or not it's recording at given point in time.
Would this require root? Is it even possible? I don't see why not.

Once a service is running in the background, it can check whatever internet site it wants whenever it wants. No need for rooting the phone. You just need to install the app.
And you might as well suck up GPS data while you're at it... though some folks (Evo!) disable GPS to prolong their battery life. There's always "course location" information available.
As long as we're being horrifically intrusive, you might as well log incoming and outgoing phone calls, and make recordings of selected numbers. Heck you could record the first 10 seconds or so of all calls, and the full conversation of specific numbers you flag.
:/
Then all you need to do is install this beast... and give it some innocuous/useful name so if she ever checks the service list she won't kill it.
PS: Services don't show up on the app list.
PPS: I'm starting to feel dirty just typing this stuff. This sort of app would be so easy to abuse. Law enforcement wet dream. Stalker wet dream too. Yow!
Of course lets not forget text and mms forwarding or intercepting. Some similar products out the allow remote control over the phone such as turning on the gps, bluetooth, speaker, and camera. Even if the program did show up in a process or service list on the phone - given the proper name no one would end it in fear the it's an important system process or something similar. (Well that excludes us on XDA )
Oh my, this is nasty... Might you ever release it.. Let me know.

Yep, same problem here but only happens in the browser. No problems typing at all but I always click a link and it seems to click a link or two above my intended selection. This problem was also even more prominent when I tried to use the firefox browser which seems to be the only browser that will allow me access to my schools website..sticking through it for now in hopes that a software update will fix it unless other users aren't having this problem, maybe just need to exchange this particular device.

After reading your post I agree with you. I mostly notice the problem with the browser. I do notice it slightly when typing but this could be do to me coming from an Iphone 4 with the keyboard being slightly different.
I dont know if you tried the browser Skyfire, but this was the only browser that I could make changes and save them when accessing the Google Voice settings from my phone. The standard browser, firefox, and even opera didnt display the full page so I was unable to actually save my changes.
Skyfire has its annoyances as well but its the best I found so far...
Thanks

Well Mine was annoying to type in landscape cause the spacebar was about 1mm higher then it looks. Felt like I was typing a "B" to hit the spacebar.
That was annoying but now, now I have the Nexus screen flip-out! Any time I type or touch the screen the thing flips out. It has a area that is seeing a perminate touch or something.. there is a app on the market that allows you to see where the touch points are. I'll have to down load it and then show someone at ATT to get it replaced... I'm irritated cause at this point I've got a lot of work in it and I cna't just make a nandroid and then restore on my next device..
Sorry about the double post, its not letting me edit my last.

If it is like the Nexus, no software won't fix it, or at least never did. They claimed they were "looking into it" BS for you'll replace it soon enough..
Is anyone else having the touch flip out issue? with multitouch visulizer or multitouch tool see what you get. I ran visulizer on mine and after about 2 min it had a perminate point on the top right corner, eventually it locked up to the point of not being able to use it.
Well hopefully there is a fix for it...I kind of put myself in a tight spot as I installed adeo rom prematurely and as far as I know there is no going back to stock yet. On top of that im pretty sure DG is done done with the atrix so unless someone picks up where he left off and I can getback to stock, ill have to live with the problem. Stupid me...

So it isn't my imagination, or my fat fingers. ONLY IN THE BROWSER. I'll touch something, and something a good 1/4" below it gets selected.
I'd say calibration also, but that doesn't explain why only in the browser. (I miss my Palm stylus!)
Are any of you facing this same problem?

I haven't even figured out how to get the app to come up when I have a game loaded. The 3 button command list seems to need you to have already brought it up once in that app.
If someone can explain how to do that I'd gladly spend some time messing with it.

yeah thats where i'm having my issue
Dev told me I could create a custom command using OUYA buttons, but I couldn't figure it out. He is working really hard on the app and has frequent updates, but no tutorials or help pages. He needs to take a break and show people how to use it a little more clearly. I spent an afternoon working with it and gave up.
I think it would probably work best to do the button mapping on a touch screen device and export it. It will probably still need to be tweaked on OUYA though. I have seen people take interest in the app on other forums only to be frustrated and give up.

I am trying to figure it out too. I want to put games like subway suffers and temple on the Ouya for my daughter. Tried setting up a profile on my galaxy tab, and it works, sometimes. I can get left to go left once, but then the other buttons, like going right or jumping/sliding doesn't work for a few seconds. Makes it very hard to use.
I had to watch a few YouTube videos before figuring out that you have to name the profile first, then hit refresh a few times, then press a button on your controller to make it appear on the screen. After that you can select what you want it to do. Can't figure out how to make it do a store command though.
I tried making a profile for final fantasy iii as well, but once I hit a fiction, it stayed pursuing that direction after I let go. I think maybe I just haven't found the right option yet.
I see it has an update in the play store, so maybe I will try again.

I have spent a few hours :crying: on this and I seem to be having some success. I have found when configuring stick 0 or stick 1 on the ouya controller, I have to check the box that swaps the X and Y axis along with checking the box to invert the x axis. I have attached a profile for minecraft that seems to be working. Feel free to give it a try (remove the .txt extension when importing).
The developer is flying blind developing for OUYA. He doesn't think he'll recoup his cost in sales to OUYA users. I'm at a loss for why anyone would buy the app right now.
Another thing I'm remembering that really aggravated me when trying the app. It took me quite some time to learn that when configuring the controls you have to click the check mark to register every change.
If someone could create a default controller scheme for the sticks and d-pad, and the home, menu, and back buttons it would be great so we all could build on that. If everyone maps those most basic buttons the same, it will make sharing profiles easier. Then there is the matter of enabling keymapper in game.
If this thread starts generating enough interest the dev will probably pop in for a visit. Then perhaps he can code in a shortcut combo for the controller to open the app in game.

The app was free in the play store when I downloaded it. There is an option to support the dev though a donation which unlocks a couple of features, but the free version supports the features I need. I have been able to map games from the play store once I found out how to use the keymapper. The auto load profile is pretty sweet when it works... I may end up with a profile for every non ouya game and launcher that I installed from the play store ((Netfix and WatchESPN). IMHO using any non ouya app with the ouya controller sucks.

The important feature that is, or was, locked in the free version is analog stick support. For whatever reason in games that natively support the analog stick but nothing else ,Tincore overrides that and then you need to pay to enable it within Tincore in order to map the buttons and use the stick. Since I'm primarily interested in driving and racing game support, that makes it a no go for me until I have a clear understanding of how to map the controls and enable it on OUYA without spending a lot of time and doing workarounds.

Do i just load this up in load profile and then go into minecraft and it will work? I don't play minecraft but I'm wondering if it's that easy.
Almost forgot as for the dev saying that he won't be able to recoup his losses I don't get that. I'm all about supporting a dev but if I supported every dev that had a half working app that I would like to play then I'd be broke. As others have said, one of the major difficulties with Tincore on OUYA is that you need to launch it within game. The apps shortcuts are created for phones our tablets.

Launch the app and import the profile. Once it loads you should see the button layout on the screen and the minecore profile name at the top of the tincore options. From there just click the check mark beside the profile name and the app should be sent to the background. If you close the app with the "X" at the top, the tincore app will not be running and your controller will default back to the standard ouya layout. Next open minecraft and use the touch pad to click play and to create a world. Once the game loads up, you use the control sticks to move/look around.
At first I had a USB keyboard connected to the ouya and to launch keymapper when in a game I would use the vol down/vol up/vol down shortcut to bring up the tincore app. After getting a couple of games working and building a profile for Nova Launcher, I went into tincore settings and changed the shortcut to lunch the app from the default vol keys on the keyboard to buttons o/u/y on the ouya controller and I am able to make changes to the tincore app without the keyboard being connected.
It is late and I rambled on long enough... let me know if you get stuck. Once I figured out the basics of the app it has been easy to configure new button layouts.
besides tincore, anyone try using any other touch to gamepad app like gamekeyboard (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fishstix.gameboard&hl=en) and sixaxis? Tincore is a pain to use with the vague instructions & videos. I'd like to know what kind of success people have had mapping touch controls to a gamepad and on what app.
Hi,
It is soo difficult to find threads lost in different forums.
If people gather in one place we could organize a wiki or something.
I would like to know what do you find difficult to understand. Once you understand the pattern it is all the same I think.
To invoke the app without notification you need to set "Open mapper on sequence". It is a sequence of 3 keys (the 3 can be the same).
select -> select -> select for instance because Ouya does not have volume buttons. If you have a spare button you can set execute function and then on Key you select MAPPER.

Cheers!
The idea is to add answers to the wiki on demand and preferrably in a collaborative way. If you miss something please ask!

Hi,
It is soo difficult to find threads lost in different forums.

Your Wiki appears to be down. When I set the sequence while running from the home screen, I can bring it up from the home screen, however the key sequence does not work once I open any app other than the home screen. What's the trick?

Here are a few hints I have found... Make sure auto profile is disabled. Also, when you launch the app from the home screen, use the key sequence that is setup to minimize the app (don't click the check mark or the X to minimize tincore. Once you launch another app you should be able to use the key sequence again to bring tincore back up.
