anyone elses nexus turn off while charging with 0 percent battery? - Nexus One General

when my battery dies, i plug the phone in the charger, and continue to use it.. after a while itll just turn off, is this normal? any thoughts?

I would imagine that even though it's plugged in the phone still uses the battery, which would cause the phone to turn off. Plus, I don't think that is very good for the battery. You should look into getting a spare and an external charger.

I'm always paranoid about overheating my batteries so I completely turn off my N1 while I am charging it since it charges quicker and doesn't get as hot.

I find that if I go all the way down to zero it won't turn on when you charge it for about a minute. I think it just makes sure it has enough power to do a safe shutdown before it lets you turn it back on.

turns off showing you 0% battery?
In this case you're overheating the battery and probably caused some damage to it by now, reducing its capacity and lifespan.
turns off when you leave it unused? Just check your "screen timeout when plugged" setting.

battery draining when I charge phone. Alerts me to change it

For some reason, every couple of days when I plug my phone in to charge the battery overnight I end up getting an alert (about 4 in the morning!) to change the battery because mine is dead, along with the back up battery, and then the phone shuts off within about a minute. Luckily I have another battery, which I then put in, and then put the dead battery in the "back up battery" slot in the cradle to charge, which it does. I don't know why this happens but it is very frustrating. I am afraid of this happening on a trip out of town where I won't have the ability to use my cradle, unless I bring it which is a big hassle. I don't know what to do.
This IS vexing. By the fact that it charges the extra battery - we know that the power transformer is connected. Since the device does not seem to be charging (possibly even discharging?) - it seems that either the connector on the charging base or the connector on the device itself are bad.
Have you used the power dongle connected to the power transformer to attempt to charge the device? This would tell you if it's the charging base or the device. If it charges outside of the base, it's the base - if not, it's the device.
Best of luck!
How are you charging the battery - from mains power or through the USB?
I had a situation where I was only using USB power to the cradle and although this worked most of the time, I noticed that if the battery was already low (<50%) then the battery seemed to discharge rather than charge.
So the trigger in your case may be the amount of charge left in the battery before you start re-charging it.
I think other people have reported similar discharging situations, so some other ideas might emerge from a search of other threads.

Weird battery behaviour + device gets hot

So my battery is at 56%, I hook it upto the charger it's been on the charger for a good 2 hours now. I unhook it and my battery suddenly is at 30%...
Also I've noticed that my device gets hot, not burn your hands hot but noticably warm hot.
Should I be worried? Could there be a short somewhere, the device is just 3 days old.
was your wfi turned on during charging?
Yes it was
that sounds really bad especially since it didn't charge
did the light come on? you might want to consider getting an exchange
Yes the light did come on and the charging symbol did apear on the screen.
If wifi is turned on and set to best performance, and if you have backlight set to remain on when connected to external power, your device will drain more power that charge.
that will explain your battery/charge/heat issue
Actually I can confirm this shouldn't be true. I turned WiFi on, turned my brightness to maximum and always on. In about 10 minutes I went from 52% to 54%.
I was using the wall adapter to charge it. USB charging might be too slow to replenish that kind of drain.
definately exchange
you don't want it to blow up

Says fully charged... Then 98%?

Plugged into the supplied wall charger, my phone will give the message that it's fully charged. I unplug it and it immediately goes to 98% and then if I plug it back in it goes back to 100%.
Has anyone else seen this? Is it a bad battery?
After it says full turn off your phone and let it charge for an additional hour, then turn it back on.
I would not encourage charging your phone while it is in.
I have not noticed this, but on my g1 it would take a bigger hit, but that phone got like 3 hours battery life, so it may have been accurate.
Does anyone know if it stops charging the battery when it gives that message that it's fully charged? If I unplug it and plug it back in it will top off the battery and I get 100%.
This occurs when the OS is not calibrated to the battery.

The OS is reading what is called a surface charge,
After you take the charger off the surface charges last from a few seconds on up to 2 mins. to get a full charge you have to let it sit for another hour or so with the phone off.

Ever have trouble with your nexus charging after completely dying?

I'm on the latest cm nightly,
I always let my tablet die before charging but this time something odd happened. When I would plug it in the white battery that shows its charging would come on then turn off. If I unplugged and plugged in again the exact same thing would happen.
While plugged in I would try booting up. It would get to the lock screen then power down because it had zero percent charge.
I figured out if I just kept unplugging it and plugging it in again and again after the the screen turned off while the white battery was showing it would charge some, boot and stay on charging correctly.
This is the first time this has happened....

Sort of reading between the lines here, and I've only had my N7 for about a month now...
... but mine has never shown the battery display continuously when it is shut off but chanrging on the AC adapter. It comes on for a little while, and then shuts off - but the unit is still charging so far as I know.
Mine was sitting at 59% right now, so I shut it down, waited 30 seconds, and plugged it into the charger. The black and white screen shows up, changes once or twice, and the screen goes dark after about 13 seconds.
I don't take that to mean that it is not charging - it takes some juice to keep the screen lit, so the battery will charge faster if the screen is not lit.
I guess I usually leave it booted while charging, but I can certainly shut it off and verify that it is indeed charging without showing something on the display.
I think it is a bad idea to run your battery all the way down. Li-Polymer batteries do not exhibit memory from partial charging... but they DO have a safety circuit that disables charging if the battery voltage goes too low. You are not gaining anything by running it all the way down, but are risking the possibility that the safety circuit will flip and permanently prevent the battery from charging. (The low-voltage trip circuit is there to prevent chargers from attempting to charge a battery that has a short - that would be a fire hazard).
cheers
[ Edit ] I powered my N7 off at 50% battery, plugged it in & let it sit for 40min, and then booted it - charge now at 74%. The charging indication on the screen was only on for the first 15 sec. Dunno if you are saying something different - but I don't think the charging indication is supposed to stay continuously on while charging. Too bad the N7 doesn't have a small LED for this purpose.

Hm. I remember the screen always staying on when charging when powered off. But that could be just bad memory.
I still don't understand why it would power down after it booted up connected to my charger. (this is after leaving it plugged in for about 5 minutes turned off)

All about charging Li-ion batteries. Li-ions are different than 'regular' batteries. Full changes and discharges is not the best for your battery.

pretty much all modern electronics don't allow a full charge or discharge.

Battery charging issue

Hello XDA community,
THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS ONLY WHEN MY PHONE IS TURNED OFF.
Recently, I have had a problem with charging my Nokia 5 when it is turned off. Once it reaches 84%, It stops getting charged but the battery health value on the charging screen remains increasing until it reaches 100%. So when I turn it ON, I find that the battery is only at 84%. I have tried to deplug the charger and plug it again, and It seems that the phone shows up the right value of the battery this time and continue charging until it reaches the true 100% value.
So to summarize, un order to fully charge my phone while it is turned off, I need to re-plug the charger after the first charge phase.
Does anyone suffer from this issue?
